2 System Composition

2.1. System Architecture

Figure 1 Block Diagram of ECDIS

As shown in Figure 1, ECDIS 600 contains two independent workstations, one is working as Planning Application, and the other is working as Monitoring Application. Two workstations are connected by a fixed wired interface based on IEC 61162-450. The main purpose of the ECDIS 600 task is to:  display on the electronic charts;  display the ship position on the electronic chart;  monitoring of approach to the dangers to navigation plotted on electronic vector charts or on map created by navigator;  route planning and drawing up the schedule of proceeding along this route;  solution of various kinds of navigational tasks (NAVTEX database, Tide & Currents database, SAR routes).

2.2. System Hardware The system is composed of the following hardware: Part name Main Unit Display Unit

Following applications run in each workstation:  Decider –is responsible for handling the incoming navigational data, targets, alerts and the Common Distributed Database (Redis DB)  INS Client –represents Conning Display and ECDIS in one module. The functionality of referenced modules must be compliant with specific regulations  SNGF (Serial to Network Gateway Function) - convert the serial NMEA data to the Ethernet representation and backward.  Redis DB,  Couch DB. The colors used in Figure 2 have following meaning:  Green – the applications and services needed for the ECDIS data distribution (not visible to navigator). In the current system architecture these are the Decider application and Redis database. Light green means Master mode. Master Decider makes all decisions about navigational data selection

12 / 75

HLD3400AZ Rev1.0

HLD-ECDIS 600 Installation Manual

and puts all values into Redis DB. The slave Decider applications only monitor the system and check if they need to become Master instead of disappeared one. The Master Redis DB is the only DB, where all applications can write the data. It distributes then the data to all slave Redis DBs in the LAN. So far, all applications can read the data locally, but write only to the Master Redis, at the same computer, where the Master Decider is running. Dark green is related to slave Decider applications and slave Redis DB instances.  White – applications, functions and services able to run at any workstation of INS, but (currently) not visible to navigator.  Yellow – functions currently represented to navigator. Could be changed by navigator's selection. Handling of Navigational data Initially the navigational data are coming to SNGF modules through serial line. The SNGF modules convert the data to Ethernet based protocol. One of Decider applications, selected as MASTER collects all navigational data from the LAN, provides their complete verification and puts the result into Redis database in RAM, which is automatically replicated to all other computers in the LAN. The Client application could access the actual navigational data and history through the database. Handling of AIS targets The information from AIS receiver is first delivered to SNGF module and then transferred to Ethernet. The MASTER Decider application captures the messages from the LAN and puts the AIS targets into Common Distributed Database. The Client application retrieves the AIS targets from database and draws them on Radar or ECDIS working area if the referenced function is currently active. The active AIS targets are regularly reported out by Decider. Handling of Alerts Alerts could be generated by any of INS applications, except the SNGF. MASTER Decider application captures all alert messages from the LAN and puts the alert information into Actual Alert Table in Common Distributed database. Client represents the currently active alerts in alert list of ECDIS or CAM accordingly to currently active function. The Alert History table is stored for 24 hours at least in the Couch DB. The out of date alerts are automatically removed from the database. Handling of Statuses and commands All commands and statuses are represented in Redis DB. The applications responsible for handling the commands must be subscribed on changes by referenced keys. Also, the client applications representing the status need to follow the changes in the Redis DB.

3 Installation Recommendations

3.1 General Recommendations Dimensions, weights, spaces required by service and mounting and special installation instructions are stated in the outline drawings and installation drawings of corresponding unit. In general, the following instructions should be applied: • The useful life of the components of all Electronics Units generally decreases with increasing ambient temperature, therefore, it is advisable to install such units in air-conditioned rooms. • For most Electronics Units, cooling takes place via the surface of the casing. The cooling must not be installed in a confined cabinet. Furthermore, the distance from the ceiling to a unit situated underneath must be at least 500 mm. • In the area of the wheel house, the distance of each Electronics Unit from the magnetic standard compass or the magnetic steering compass must not be less than the permitted magnetic protection distance. This distance is measured from the centre of the magnetic system of the compass to the nearest point on the corresponding unit concerned. • Units which are to be used on the bridge wing must be installed inside the "wing control console" -- protected against the weather. • When selecting the site of a unit, the maximum cable lengths have to be considered according to the notes in Maximum Cable Length of 3.2. •

The accessibility for maintenance and service must be considered.

• Disturbing reflections on the screen of a display caused by pilot lamps and illuminated signs must be prevented by suitable measures (screening or relocating). • When a unit is being installed, the base, floor or bulkhead must be checked to ensure that it is flat in order to avoid twisting of the unit when the fixing screws are tightened, because such twisting would impair mechanical functions. Any unevenness should be compensated for by means of spacing-washers. • The grounding screws of the units must be connected to the body of the ship (ground); the wire used should have a cross sectional area of at least 3 mm. Aboard fiberglass (GRP) vessels, a "grounding network" with a high conductance must be provided in order to achieve satisfactory EMC (electromagnetic compatibility).

HLD3400AZ Rev1.0

HLD-ECDIS 600 Installation Manual

• The equipment should never be switched on by the electricians who did the installation work -not even just for a moment! This is a job for the authorized Highlander Electronics service engineer. • After handing over of the equipment in good operating condition to the customer, the Installation Report (Annex of the Warranty Certificate) should be filled in completely and then forwarded to Highlander as proof of such fulfilment. It is important that these requirements be fulfilled in order to avoid the risk of losing the warranty.

3.2 Cables Cable types, cable data, special instructions for cable laying and connection details are defined in the Connection Diagram. For each project, the Connection Diagram is customized, so customers need to fill in the questionnaire and send to Highlander with the order. The interface connections should be discussed and agreed by Highlander, and then Highlander will give the connection diagrams. The cable type and the connection need to be according to the Connection Diagram. In general, the following points must be taken into account: •

Cables for navigational equipment should never run through the radio transmitter room.

• The cables must be marked by the electrician at both ends with the cable numbers corresponding to the Connection Diagram. Where necessary, particular cable glands - marked with letters and/or numbers - are assigned to the cables. • It must be ensured that all cables - including their screens - are passed into the units in continuous lengths and are not terminated before reaching the destination unit. • With the use of cable glands without grounding inserts, the screen braiding need to place outside the unit and plaited to form a "pigtail", terminated by a cable terminal, and connected to the prescribed grounding terminal. It must be ensured that the grounding lead is kept as short as possible. • In the case of a unit whose cable inlet consists of a hole with brackets attached on the outside, the cable must be dressed as shown in Figure 3. 100

Crimp Connector 40.00

Shielding layer Power cable from distribution board

Corrosion proof jacket

Figure 3Cable inlet consisting of a hole with brackets

• All cable connections must be carefully checked after completion of the cable work and all cable screens must be grounded via the shortest possible connections - if not stated otherwise in the Connection Diagram. •

All cables must be secured by means of suitable clamps (wire tie) before entering the units.

HLD3400AZ Rev1.0

It must be ensured that cables do not block any moving parts within a unit.

Power leads must be protected by "slow-blow" fuses according to their cross section.

Maximum Cable Length The wire cabling between LAN Switch and other units must not exceed a length of 100 m.
