1 Overview Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) is designed to record and store in a secure and retrievable form, information of the ship’s position, movements, physical status, control commands and responses for the period leading up to and following an incident. It enables accident investigators to review procedures and instructions leading up to the moments of an incident and help to identify the cause of the accident. The data recorded by VDR can also be used for vessel management, such as equipment status reports, ship position reports, safety and preventive training for crew. HLD‐VDR600 is the latest generation of Highlander VDR product, offering an unmatched flexibility, easy to install and maintain solution. The product design offers high reliability and stability for operation in maritime environment while meeting IEC 61996‐1 Ed.2 and latest IMO Maritime Safety Circular, MSC.333(90)coming to effect on 1st July 2014. HLD‐VDR600 comprises of 9 components units:

2.1 Main Unit(MU)
Figure 2: Main unit Long‐term Data Recording Unit (LRU), network switch, main board, and audio board are located in the Main Unit. The Long‐term Data Recording Unit (LRU) records the last 720 hours data and is accessible by Ethernet. The LRU is protected against any unauthorized access of the data by seals. Please note that the data must be used with caution if the seals are broken without authorization. The acquired data is transferred to the Fixed Protected Data Unit (PDU) and Float‐free Data Recording Capsule (FFC) via LAN. Power Supply for the PDU and FFC is supplied via a separate 24VDC line. 2 input channels for VHF radio audio is provided. VHF audio channel are mixed for recording. 8 input channels for microphones, 2 LAN input channels for ECDIS, a LAN input channel for Video Acquisition Unit, a LAN input channel for Non Standard Data Acquisition Unit with separate 24VDC power supply line, a LAN input channel for Serial Data Acquisition Unit with separate 24VDC power supply line, System Failure output and External Alarm Acknowledge input are provided. The VDR System is powered through the Main Unit's power supply which accepts AC and DC mains. An internal uninterruptible power supply driven by internal battery bank supports the VDR system after the external powers are disrupted.

2.2 Operation Unit (OPU)
Figure 3: HLD‐OPU600 HLD‐OPU600 Operation Unit comprises of a800x480pixels high definition LCD with touch screen operation and dedicated function buttons in an enclosure adaptable for wall or bulkhead mounting. Caution and alarm alerts are display in user friendly graphic display. The HLD‐OPU600 Operation Unit is the Human Machine Interface for the VDR system. System functions, alarms messages, alerts and reset are displayed and operations are carried through the unit.
2.3 Microphones (MIC)
Figure 4: Microphone The VDR system comes with indoor microphones and outdoor microphones. Outdoor microphones are protected against water ingression and are suitable for usage under such environments. Proper installation of microphones as the installation location will ensure that the proper capturing of whole bridge communication.

2.4 Fixed Protective Data Recording Capsule (PDC)

HLD‐PDU600 Protective Data Recording Capsule is equipped with memory capacity of 32GB or 64GB and provides data recording time of more than 48hours. The capsule is built to withstand extreme environmental conditions in accordance to IMO requirements such as temperatures up to 1100°C, penetration, high pressure and deep water immersion while maintaining the data integrity.
2.5 Float‐free Data Recording Capsule (FFC)
Figure 6: HLD‐FFC600 HLD‐FFC600 Float‐free Data Recording Capsule comply with IMO ResA.810(19), ITU‐RM.633‐3:2004 , IEC61097‐2 and IEC61096‐7regulations and requirements. The name of the vessel, Mobile Maritime Service Identification (MMSI), Callsign and Nationality is programmed into the Float‐Free Capsule for search & rescue recovery. 2.6 Serial Data Acquisition Unit (DAU)
Figure 7: HLD‐DAU600 The Serial Data Acquisition Unit, HLD‐DAU600 has24 serial input channels in accordance to IEC61162 format. Channels are galvanically isolated to ensure isolation of input signals. Data from the unit is transferred to the recording units via LAN through the main unit. The unit is powered by 24VDC supplied via the main unit.
2.7 Non‐Standard Data Acquisition Unit (NAU)
Figure 8:HLD‐NAU600 Non‐Standard Data Acquisition Unit, HLD‐NAU600 has 64 input channels with volt‐free dry contact, 8input channels with potential contact and 8 input channels for ±10V or 4‐20mA analog signal. Each channel is galvanically isolated. Data from the unit is transferred to the recording units via LAN through the main unit. The unit is powered by 24VDC supplied via the main unit.

1 Generral

EElectronic componentts' lifespan n generally decreasess with increased am mbient t temperatur re and hum midity. It is advisable to install su uch units in n air‐conditiioned r rooms.
Proper venttilation shou P uld be provided for the e units to en nsure dissip pation of intternal h heat. It is r ecommend ded that thee units shou uld not be installed in confined aareas. U Units shoulld not be installed at distance of o not less than500 m mm beneath h the c ceiling or ov verhead structures.

LED display panels should be suitably shielded from reflections of lamps or other illuminations.
Foundations, bulkhead mountings or brackets should be installed on flat surfaces to ensure that the units can be properly secured and deformation of the casings or supports is avoided. Such deformation may cause malfunctions in the equipment. Should uneven surfaces are unavoidable; spacers should be used to even out the mounting.
Grounding points of the units shall be secured to the ship's body via proper ground points. The size of grounding cable shall not be less than 3mm cross sectional diameter. Care must be taken for non‐metallic vessels to ensure that proper grounding network is available.
After installation and termination, the equipment should not be turn on until a factory authorized service engineer is present to inspect the system.
Installation report shall be duly filled and endorsed by the vessel's crew after completion of installation and commissioning of the equipment. The completed Installation Report shall be submitted to Highlander Service Department for warranty registration. Non‐submission of Installation report shall void warranty. Programming report of Float‐Free Recording Capsule with details of the vessel's particulars must be attached with the installation report. Registration of the Float‐Free Recording Capsule with the relevant authorities is the responsibility of the owners.

2 Cables 2.1 Maximum Cable Length The VDR utilized four types of cables. When installing, the suitable distance between units must be ensure that the maximum allowable cable length of not more than 300m is not exceeded unless otherwise stated. 1) Network cable This cable connects the Main Unit to the other units or signal source in the system. 2) Potential Free / Potential contact connection cable This cable connects the Main Unit to the signal sources. 3) Serial Signal cable This cable connects the Main Unit to the serial signal source. 4) CAN bus cable This cable connects the Main Unit to the Operation Unit.
2.2 Wiring The interconnection for each project differs depending on the configuration. A standard wiring configuration is shown in Annex B for reference purposes. General cabling procedures and precautions must be closely adhered.
Signal cables for navigational equipment should not be laid close to RF transmitting equipment.
Cables must be properly marked at both ends with the cable identification corresponding to the project connection diagram. Where necessary, cable glands should be marked with identification assigned to the cables.
Screen shields must be terminated inside the units or signal source. Cables should full length and not joined to extend its length.
For cable glands without grounding inserts, the screen braiding must be

terminated outside the unit with the screen shield plaited into a pigtail with a cable terminal for connection to proper grounding terminal. The screen shield lead should be kept as short as possible.
For units with holding bars at the cable inlet attached on the outside, the cable must be stripped and prepared as shown in figure 1. 100

Cable connections must be checked after the completion of the cabling works. Screens must be grounded via the shortest possible path unless stated in the connection diagram.
Cables must be properly secured by means of suitable cable fasting clamps or cable ties at the entrance of the units.
Cables must not come into the path of any moving parts inside the unit.
Power Inlets must be protected by slow‐blow fuses with rating depending on the cable size.

1 Mounting Procedures 1.1 Tools for installation: There are no special tools required for the installation of the VDR. Proper tools must be used to ensure that there are no damages to the cable connectors and inlets are securely fastened.
1.2 Location Mounting clearance distances are shown in the mounting diagram. Installation must comply strictly to the mounting drawing. The unit must be securely mounted on the bulkhead and care is taken to prevent or minimize excessive body vibrations. Cable entrances should be clear for cable entry, cable mounting and securing, interconnection between units. Distance between each component unit of the VDR should be as close as possible to ensure that the interconnect cables are kept to the shortest possible length. There are no special tools required for the installation of the Serial Data
Acquisition Unit. Proper tools must be used to ensure that there are no damages
to the cable connectors and inlets are securely fastened.
1.2 Location Drill the holes for mounting the Serial Data Acquisition Unit according to the drilling template. .Installation must comply strictly to the mounting drawing. Location of installation should allow easy laying and access of interconnect cablings between the Serial Data Acquisition Unit and Main Unit. Distance between Main Unit and Serial Data Acquisition Unit should be as close as possible to ensure that the interconnect cables are kept to the shortest possible length. The unit must be securely mounted on the bulkhead and care is taken to prevent excessive body vibrations. When choosing the location for installation, note that the unit is rated as IP 22.

1 Mounting Procedures 1.1 Tools for installation: There are no special tools required for the installation of the Operation Unit. Proper tools must be used to ensure that there are no damages to the cable connectors and inlets are securely fastened.
1.2 Location There are two ways of mounting the Operation Unit: Bulkhead or Flush mounting. Hole drilling schematic templates are given for positioning. Location of installation should allow easy laying and access of interconnect cablings between the Operation Unit and Main Unit. Distance between Main Unit and Operation Unit should be as close as possible to ensure that the interconnect cables are kept to the shortest possible length. The unit is preferably to be installed on the bridge for operation purposes. Care to be taken to ensure it is securely mounted and minimize excessive vibrations. F. Gently inserted the antenna into its position with the beacon is firmly in its proper position. G. Connect the interconnection cable at terminal, TB1.
H. Close the lid of the casing and latch the hydrostatic release into position with its safety pin. I. Check that the expiry date of hydrostatic release is marked after installation. Expiry date of the Hydrostatic Release Unit is 24months from date of installation.
2 Encoding the FFC The FFC must be encoded with the Ship's Name, Call sign, MMSI and Nationality prior to delivery from the factory. The information must be provided by the vessel's owners at the point of order confirmation. If the FFC is not programmed, please contact the nearest authorized service agent or Highlander Service Department. Unauthorized access or tempering or disassembly of the FFC may cause unwanted transmission of distress or damage to the equipment and void its warranty.
3 Interconnections The Float‐free Data Recording Capsule is connected to the Main Unit via capsule junction box. Table 1 shows the terminations. Table 1: Terminations Connector

1.2 Location Location of the Microphones is very important criteria for ensuring the ability of VDR to record all bridge audio communications. Microphones should be located as near to the audio communication source as possible. It is recommended to install the microphone at not less than 1.0m away from the source. The number of indoor microphones to be installed depends on the size and layout of the wheelhouse. Additional microphones may be required for the proper recording of the bridge audio communications. Following installation locations are recommended for reference purpose. The exact installation location should depend on the layout of the bridge. Drill the holes for mounting the microphone according to the drilling template. Mount the Microphone with M4 and secure firmly. Microphone must be properly ground to ensure a good audio recording without interferences. Secure a proper grounding point of the ship's body to the microphone with grounding cable.
