Today we’re listening to Kitty and Nathan talking about their friendship. Kitty You’re definitely my best friend, Nathan. You always have been! Nathan Yes, we’ve been friends since before we were born – almost [laugh]. Kitty That’s right. You see, our mums were friends. In fact, they still are friends. You could say that our families are friends. Nathan True. Our families often do things together, like celebrating birthdays, going out and that sort of thing. Kitty And sometimes holidays too. Do you remember that holiday we had in Spain? Nathan Yes, that was really good fun. We had a great time! Kitty Anyway, we’ve grown up together, more or less. Nathan We’ve always been to the same schools, but we’re in different classes now. Kitty I don’t think we really have the same interests, though. I’m really into sport – swimming, netball, athletics. You don’t like sport much, right? Nathan No, I don’t. Music’s my thing. Music lessons and playing with my band. So, when people say you need to share the same interests as your friends, that’s just not true. Kitty No, it isn’t. We haven’t got the same personalities, either. You’re easy-going and patient whereas I’m very energetic but a bit impatient and sometimes moody. So why are we best friends? Nathan Good question. I think it’s because we understand each other. I can talk to you about lots of different things, good and bad, and I think you know how I’m feeling. Kitty Definitely. We always spend our time talking about things, right? I always discuss my problems and worries with you and you always give me good advice. I know I’m very talkative … Nathan That’s true! He’s the car mechanic and he repairs things. He’s also the cook. Mum’s the person who plans the journeys and chooses the places to go. She writes our blog and she also helps Daniel and me with our projects. Pres. What’s your job, Daniel? Daniel I’m the official photographer and artist. I’m keeping a photo diary. Pres. Have you kept the photo diary since the beginning of the trip? Daniel No, I was too young then! I’ve been doing it for about four years. Every day, I take photos of all the things that we’ve done and seen. Pres. And what about you, Kate? Kate I’m the scientist! I’m interested in nature and I’ve been taking photos of all the trees, foliage and fungus we find. Then I do the research and tell the others. Pres. That’s really interesting, but have you been to school since the start of your trip? Daniel That’s the question people always ask us! We’ve been to school in some of the countries we’ve visited. When we stop in one place for a few months, we go to the local school. Pres. Has language ever been a problem? Kate Not really. We’ve met lots of people who speak English, luckily. Pres. What have you learnt from your travels? Daniel I think we’ve learnt more from visiting different countries than from lessons at school! Kate Our parents want us to see how other cultures live. They think that this is the best way of learning about the world. We haven’t passed a lot of exams but we’ve learnt so much from our experiences.

4 1 D 2 A 3 F 4 B 5 E C is not used. SCRIPT [1.06] Tess I’ve always loved reading. When I was little, my mum and dad used to read us stories a lot. Mum would take my brother and me to the library once a week. I can remember it really well. We would choose our books and then we’d join some other children to listen to a story. Now I read mostly fiction – all types of novels. I read at any time of the day but my favourite time is reading in bed before I go to sleep. Sanjay I read a lot but I don’t usually read fiction. The only novels I read are for English lessons at school. Some of the books we read are OK but I don’t enjoy them much. I’m really into science and technology. I like finding out how things work, so those are the sort of books I read. At the moment, I’m reading about the invention of the first aeroplanes. I’ve also read some biographies about famous scientists and their discoveries. There’s loads of stuff on the internet about science and technology, so I read blogs and articles, too. Alissa Reading isn’t really my thing. I never sit down and read a novel. Obviously, I have to read for school, but I don’t like the classics and the sorts of books the teachers give us to read. They’re boring. I mean, I like stories but I prefer watching films. In fact, I watch lots of films. I used to buy magazines but I was spending too much money on them, so I stopped. Now, I read online: social media, blogs and all that sort of thing. Rowan I enjoy a good fantasy novel, but I can’t say I spend a lot of time reading books. I used to read more when I was a child because my parents were always encouraging me to read. They used to buy me books and take me to the local library. In the holidays, when I’ve got some time, I really enjoy a good fantasy story and I sometimes download an ebook and read it. To be honest, I now spend more time playing fantasy video games. Abby I love reading and most of last weekend I was reading – but not the books of my choice! I’m studying English Literature, French and History, so there’s a lot of reading to do. I have to read novels in English and French and books about history too. One of the reasons that I chose these subjects is because I like reading, so I mustn’t complain! This means I don’t have much time for the books I want to read at the moment. I’m making a list of novels to read when I’ve got time – but I’ve no idea when that will be!

SCRIPT [1.07] Girl Oh no. There’s PE this afternoon and we’re playing hockey this week. Boy What’s the problem? Hockey’s good fun. Girl Maybe for you, but I hate it. Actually, it’s not just hockey, I hate all team sports. Boy What?! You can’t be serious! Team sports are the best. Girl You say that because you enjoy them but there are lots of students, boys as well as girls, who don’t like team sports. And I’m one of them. I don’t understand why we always have to play team sports in PE lessons. I know it’s important to keep fit and do physical exercise, but there are lots of other types of exercise – dance, yoga and gym workouts, for example. Boy OK, but team sports are good outdoor exercise and they’re a good way to learn teamwork skills. You get a great feeling of friendship when you belong to a team and when you win, it’s such a brilliant feeling! Girl That’s another thing, team sports are very competitive and I don’t think that’s a good thing. I think competition can become very negative because you are always trying to be better than other people. In individual sports, you try to improve all the time and make your own personal progress. I think that’s more positive. Boy Actually, the team works together to improve and get better results. In training sessions, we work on our own personal fitness too, you know. TALENT 2 ■ Test book
Girl Team sports are dangerous. Players fall over; they get hit by the ball. Look at our class, Max broke his arm playing rugby and Jenna’s hurt her foot playing volleyball. Boy You’ve got a point there, but you have to take risks in team sports and occasionally people get hurt. Actually, you learn to take risks because you know your team mates will support and help you. Everybody says that’s an important life skill and team sports are a really useful way of teaching it. You don’t learn about risk-taking in a gym! Girl That’s true. In a gym, you learn to take care of your body and not get injuries. Boy But where’s the fun in a gym? Repeating the same boring exercise by yourself. Girl Not true! You can go with your mates and a good workout to music is real fun and it makes you feel really good! Anyway, I understand that people like you love team sports but what I’m saying is that there should be more variety in PE lessons. Boy Well, perhaps they could let students choose between team sports and alternative exercise. Then people don’t have to do sports they don’t enjoy. Girl Exactly. Boy It could be an idea – but I’ll never change my mind. I’ll always choose team sports!

KEYS AND SCRIPTS 2 Policew. Can you tell us exactly what you saw, Mr Tanner? Man Yes, I certainly can! I was in the park with my dog yesterday evening. We were walking past the children’s play area when we saw this gang of vandals! Policew. Vandals, Mr Tanner? Man Yes. There were four teenagers in the children’s playground. Policew. Were there any children there? Man No, there weren’t – fortunately. The teenagers were running around and shouting. Policew. Well, that’s not exactly a crime, Mr Tanner. Man (indignant sniff) Just wait, then they went over to the snack machine. They tried to break the glass with stones and then they used something to try to get the money out. They damaged the machine. Policew. Thank you, Mr Tanner. 3 Pres. Thieves stole 10 million pounds’ worth of rings, watches and diamonds from a shop in the Mayfair district of London this morning. The two thieves arrived at the shop dressed as workmen and said they’d come to replace a window. They started work immediately. The shop owner was busy with a customer and he hadn’t seen the workmen putting all the jewellery in the window display into their bag. The workmen left the shop to get something from their van, so they said, but they didn’t return. When the customer left the shop, the owner discovered the theft and called the police. 4 Boy Policew. Good morning. I want to report a crime. Right. What’s happened? Someone has stolen my bike. Are you sure your bike’s gone? You didn’t leave it somewhere else? No, no. I’m absolutely certain. Where exactly did you leave the bike? Outside the library in Park Street. What time was this? I went into the library at about a quarter to eleven and I came out about half an hour later. So this has only just happened? Yes. I looked around to see if I could find my bike and then I came straight here. There have been a lot of bike thefts recently. The bridge over the river in the nearby village of Appleby is closed, so traffic has to go along the alternative route, which is causing delays. Strong winds have blown down trees in the central park but Wesley Road is now open again. A fallen tree had blocked the road earlier this morning but workmen have now removed it. The major problem in the city centre is flooding. The roads around the main square are all closed. Police are directing all traffic away from the area. Please don’t go to this area of the city unless it’s absolutely necessary. 2 Girl Look at the weather! We can’t go to the beach today, it’s too windy. Boy That’s a shame! It isn’t very warm either. Girl The weather forecast says it’s going to stay like this all day. So, what shall we do? Boy How about a bike ride? Girl What? In this weather? If we go out on our bikes, it’ll be really hard work in this wind. Boy That’s true. Girl But I don’t want to stay at home all day. Boy I know … we could go to that new swimming pool. It’s indoors and it’s got a leisure pool with a waterfall! Girl Cool. Perhaps we can go to the beach tomorrow! 3 Pres. Now I’ll hand you over to Steve for the weather. Steve Hello, there. Well, we’ve all had a little bit of rain today but tomorrow looks as if it’ll be better. In all regions, the day will start cloudy with low temperatures of about seven or eight degrees Celsius. The sun will come out in the south and west by midday, but areas in the north and east might have to wait until the afternoon to see the sunshine. The afternoon will be dry and sunny everywhere with a light wind at the coasts. Maximum temperatures will probably reach sixteen to seventeen degrees Celsius. The evening will be fine, but there’s a possibility of rain on the north coast. 4 Woman Did you hear the storm last night? Man I certainly did. The thunder woke me up. Woman And all that heavy rain too. We haven’t had a storm like that for years! Man Apparently, the village shop is flooded.

SCRIPT [1.10] Pres. Now that spring’s here, we’re all thinking about getting out there and getting fit for the summer. Ellie That’s right. When we see the sunshine, we all want to get outside. Pres. So, would you recommend outdoor activities and not indoor ones, like the gym? Ellie Yes, I would. But the important thing is to do some exercise, and if the gym is the only option you have, do that! Pres. What’s the advantage of being outdoors? Ellie The fresh air! Then the outdoor environment – grass, trees, sky, birds – make us feel more relaxed and calmer. The general health benefits of exercising outside are greater – and a few drops of rain won’t hurt you! Pres. Fine. So, we’re outdoors. What exercise can we do? Ellie There are two activities I’d like to recommend. They’re both open to everyone of all ages and levels of fitness. Pres. Great – that’s what we want! Ellie First, organised runs in your local park every Saturday morning. It’s outdoor exercise; it’s free and it’s all organised by volunteers. Go along with a group of friends or by yourself and run five kilometres round the park. All you need are a good pair of trainers. Pres. Is it a race?
TALENT 2 ■ Test book
Ellie No, that’s the great thing … everyone runs at their own speed. Volunteers time each runner and put the times on the website. Pres. So, you can see your progress. Ellie Yes, that’s right. It’s great fun – you get to meet people and there’s always a happy atmosphere. Pres. Are there any disadvantages? Ellie Only the weather! There are runs throughout the year, so in the winter you might get a bit wet or cold. Pres. Right ... now what’s the other activity? Ellie Group training. Once again, you’re in your local park but this time with a group of people and an instructor. Pres. So, you’re running, stretching and doing exercises, and that kind of thing? Ellie That’s right. A good instructor will do a variety of exercises and make it fun. Pres. Do you need any special equipment? Ellie No, only comfortable clothes and trainers. Some instructors include cycling, so you might need to take your bike, but that’s all. Group training is great fun and it’s very motivating. If you do it regularly, you’ll certainly get fit. Pres. Are there any disadvantages apart from the weather? Ellie The only negative I can think of is the fact that you don’t get any individual attention. Pres. Great, thanks Ellie ...

SCRIPT [1.11] Speaker 1 English or British? Good question. When it comes to sports, like rugby and football, I definitely support England. When it’s Team GB – that’s when England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all play together in one team, there’s no problem! I think I feel British first. I recognise the Union Jack as my flag more than the red cross of Saint George and my family is a bit of a mix. One of my grandfathers was born in Scotland and my mum’s family came from Wales originally. I like the idea of being part of the United Kingdom – you know, it’s England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all together. Some people talk about it breaking up, but I hope that doesn’t happen.
Listening Skills Tests
KEYS AND SCRIPTS Speaker 2 I was born here in Wales and when people ask my nationality, I say I’m Welsh, no question! My family has lived in Wales for centuries and we speak Welsh at home. I’m very proud of my Welsh culture – the food, the poetry and the festivals. When my class went on an exchange trip to France, the French would call us ‘English’ all the time. We didn’t like that and we explained the difference between Wales and England! The trouble is, Wales is a small country with a small population and I think people outside the UK don’t really know very much about it. Speaker 3 I live in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. My dad’s Scottish but my mum’s English, so I think I feel British first. But I also feel Scottish because Scotland is my country and I’ve spent most of my life here – except for four years when we lived in Manchester. I love everything about Scotland but I don’t want Scotland to be independent from the rest of the United Kingdom. If I had been old enough to vote in the referendum, I wouldn’t have voted for an independent Scotland. I know Scotland was an independent country until 1707 but I hope it stays in the UK now. Speaker 4 I come from Northern Ireland. My country is separated from the rest of the United Kingdom by the sea but you don’t need to show your passport when you travel between Northern Ireland and the rest of Britain. Do I feel British or Irish? Well, both! My Irish culture is very important to me. I’ve chosen Irish as one of my subjects at school and I’m proud that I can now speak the language a bit. But I also feel British. We use the same money as the rest of Britain here in Northern Ireland and lots of other things are the same here too. I want to go to university in England or Scotland because I’d love to have the opportunity to find out about the rest of the United Kingdom. Speaker 5 I live in the Republic of Ireland, or Eire, which is its Irish name. My country isn’t in the United Kingdom but often people from other countries don’t seem to know that the island of Ireland is actually divided into two different countries. I’m Irish so I haven’t got British nationality. Next year, I’m going to study in France on the Erasmus programme and I’m really excited about that. Irish culture is famous all over the world because of our history of emigration. When I tell people I’m from Ireland, they’re always very interested and ask me lots of questions about my country, the music and the culture.

SCRIPT [1.12] Pres. Now it’s time for The Gadget Inspector. What weird and wonderful kitchen gadgets have you found for us this week, Rajiv? Rajiv Well, it’s been a good week in the kitchen shops so I’m going to talk about two gadgets today. Pres. Great. So what are they? Rajiv This is a diet plate. Pres. A what? Rajiv A diet plate. You use it if you’re on a diet. It helps you to control the quantity of food you eat. Pres. Mmm, I see. And what’s this? Rajiv Can’t you see? It’s a coconut grater! Pres. Of course it is! We’ll start with the diet plate, I think. Rajiv Right, well, it’s a white plate and it’s made of plastic. It looks like an ordinary plate but in the centre, there’s a section that is the same shape and size as a stomach. Pres. A stomach! That’s revolting! Rajiv Look, there are even two canals where the food goes in and out of the stomach! Pres. So far, so disgusting! Right, so I’m on a diet and I can only eat the food that I can put in this stomach? Rajiv Right! Pres. Have you tried it? Rajiv Yes, I have, unfortunately. I used this plate for all my meals on one day and the result was … I felt extremely hungry all day. Only a very small portion can be put on the plate. Pres. I think it’s horrible! It looks disgusting! I wouldn’t want to eat anything from this plate. Rajiv So you’d lose weight quickly! Success! Pres. I think we’d better move on to the coconut grater. Rajiv Now the biggest problem with coconuts isn’t grating them. It’s opening them. They are incredibly hard and they’re full of water – my kitchen was covered in water and bits of coconut when I did it. The coconut has to be cut in half before you can use the grater. Pres. Now this grater is about the size of a coffee pot. In fact, it looks like a coffee pot with a long handle.

Hey, you’re home early. What’s up with you? You look a bit down. Yeah. I am a bit. It’s the school orchestra. Mr Stevens spoke to me after the practice today. That’s not like you! You used to be really keen on your music. Come to think of it, I haven’t heard you playing your violin round the house much recently … To be honest, I’m a bit fed up with the school orchestra. I mean, I still like music and playing the violin, but it’s the school orchestra … I don’t know … I’d like to stop, but I can’t decide what to do. Is there a concert coming up? Yeah, worst luck. That’s the problem. It’s quite soon – in about three weeks, I think. Have you been going to practices? Sometimes, when I’ve felt like it, but I’ve missed a lot and I haven’t learnt my pieces very well. That’s why Mr Stevens spoke to me. I said I’d work really hard to catch up with the others. He even said I could do extra practice at lunch break – huh, no way! Well, cheer up! You’ve got to do the concert. I mean, the others are relying on you, and so is the teacher. But when that’s over, you can decide if you want to stop playing in the orchestra or not. It’s no big deal. Except Mum and Dad don’t know what’s been happening … That’s another thing. They’re going to be really disappointed if I say I want to leave the school orchestra. Don’t worry about that. Mum and Dad were OK with me when I stopped piano lessons. I suppose so.
