Laboratory Activity 3

“Sihay – Ang Silid ng Buhay”

(In celebration of Buwan ng Wika & Nat’l Heroes Day, we are using the word ‘sihay’ - the Filipino term for cell)

I.

Unang bahagi.

Organulo (Organelle) 1. Plasma Membrane

2. Nucleus 3. Ribosome

Taan/Tungkulin (Functions) Functions as the outer boundary of the cell; controls the entry and exit of substances; receptor proteins function in intercellular communication; marker molecules enable cells to recognize one another. Is the control center of the cell; DNA within the nucleus regulates protein (e.g., enzyme) synthesis and therefore the chemical reactions of the cell. Serves as site of protein synthesis.

4. Rough endoplasmic reticulum

Synthesizes proteins and transports them to Golgi Apparatus.

5. Smooth endoplasmic reticulum

Manufactures lipids and carbohydrates; detoxifies harmful chemicals; stores calcium.

6. Golgi apparatus

Modifies, packages, and distributes proteins and lipids for secretion or internal use.

7. Lysosome

Contains digestive enzymes.

8. Peroxisome

Serves as one site of lipid and amino acid degradation; breaks down hydrogen peroxide.

9. Proteasomes

Break down proteins in the cytoplasm.

10. Mitochondria

Are major sites of ATP synthesis when oxygen is available.

11. Centrioles

Serve as centers for microtubule formation; determine cell polarity during cell division; form the basal bodies of cilia and flagella.

12. Cilia

Move materials over the surface of cells.

13. Microvilli

Increase surface area of the plasma membrane for absorption and secretion; modified to form sensory receptors.

14. Cytoplasm

Acts as a buffer and protects the genetic material of the cell and also the cellular organelles from damage caused due to movement and collision with other cells.

15. Chromatin

Compresses the DNA into a compact unit that will be less voluminous and can fit within the nucleus.

16. Cytoskeleton

Helps cells maintain their shape and internal organization, and it also provides mechanical support that enables cells to carry out essential functions like division and movement. Mediates the vesicular transport of cargo: hormones or neurotransmitters - from an organelle to specific sites at the cell membrane, where it docks and fuses to release its content.

17. Secretory Vesicles

Anong organulo ang makikita sa loob ng isa pang organulo na mitochondria? Ano ang taan nito? Sagot: The inner membrane of the mitochondria folds over many times and creates layered structures called cristae. The fluid contained in the mitochondria is called the matrix. III. Ikatatlong bahagi. 1. Cardiac Muscle Cell

1. Red Blood Cell 2. Erythrocytes, Platelets 3. Blood

IV. Ika-apat na bahagi. Na diskobre ito taong 2018, anong organulo ito? Isulat ang taan o tungkulin nito

Sagot: The image above is the TIGER domain. A minor membrane less organelle in which messenger RNA encodes certain types of proteins to find the appropriate environment for growth. It is closely allied with the endoplasmic reticulum where proteins are made. According to Christine Mayr, one of the two cell biologists who discovered it, it is a sorting mechanism since it admits specific messenger RNAs according to certain rules and excludes. Then it shapes how the proteins made from those messenger RNAs will function.

― Bob Ong, ABNKKBSNPLAKo?!
