Many inner-city areas are run down because of unemployment, poor housing and an ever-changing world. So what is being done to regenerate them? Urban regeneration is becoming ever more important, with many areas of large cities being abandoned due to a lack of opportunities. With the decline of manufacturing and industry in inner-city areas, the levels of unemployment have risen, and only low-paid manual jobs and poor housing remain. Urban regeneration aims to improve an area physically and economically, through help from both local councils and the local community itself. For governments, this means investing public money into housing or social programmes and focusing on the four key areas: unemployment, lack of quality healthcare, crime and education. For locals, it means

cleaning up their area to encourage people to move back and providing something interesting to make people want to visit and work there. Birmingham is one such place, known in the twentieth century as the hub of the UK’s manufacturing and automotive industries. Now, it is slowly being regenerated by the council and locals alike, with more than a billion pounds of recent investment in affordable housing, office space and leisure areas in its city centre. Now, you’ll find street tours and re-enactments set in the city, water bus trips on its many canals and even rooftop yoga lessons.
