ANTI-LOCK BRAKING 138C SYSTEM Fault finding - Introduction
38C
GENERAL APPROACH TO FAULT FINDING: – Use one of the diagnostic tools to identify the system fitted to the vehicle (to read the computer group, the program number, the Vdiag, etc.). – Locate the Fault finding documents corresponding to the system identified. – Include information contained in the introductory sections. – Read the faults stored in the computer memory and use the Fault interpretation section of the documents. REMINDER: each fault is interpreted for a given type of storage (fault present, fault stored, fault present or stored). The specified checks for dealing with each fault are therefore only to be performed if the fault declared by the diagnostic tool can be identified in the document by its type. The way in which the fault is stored should be considered when using the diagnostic tool after switching the ignition off and on again. If a fault is interpreted when it is recorded as stored, the application conditions for the fault finding procedure appear in the Notes box. When these conditions are not satisfied, use the fault finding procedure to check the circuit of the faulty part, since the fault is no longer present on the vehicle. Perform the same operation when a fault is declared as stored by the diagnostic tool but is only interpreted in the documentation as a present fault. – Perform the conformity check (appearance of possible incorrect operations not yet declared by the system's self-diagnosis procedure) and apply the associated fault finding strategy according to results. – Confirm repair (disappearance of the fault reported by the customer). – Use the fault finding strategy for each Customer complaint if the problem persists. Tools required for work on the ABS system: – Diagnostic tools (CLIP or NXR). – Multimeter.
Reminders: IT IS ESSENTIAL TO KEEP THE BRAKE PEDAL PRESSED DOWN WHEN USING ANY ACTUATOR COMMANDS, OTHERWISE THE TOOL DOES NOT PERFORM THEM. When there is intermittent fault storage, the ABS warning light will light up the next time the vehicle is used until the car reaches 7 mph (12 km/h). When the fault is stored, a counter relating to the fault is set at 40. This value is reduced each time the ignition is turned on if the fault is not present when the vehicle speed exceeds 5 mph (12 km/h). When the counter value equals 1, there is no further reduction and the fault is not cleared. When dialogue is established between the diagnostic tool and the ABS computer, the ABS and EBD (electronic braking distribution) functions are interrupted, which gives rise to the risk of losing control of the vehicle under emergency braking. For safety reasons, the dialogue is cut as soon as the vehicle speed exceeds 6 mph (10 km/h) to re-establish ABS and EBD functioning. The instrument panel carries out fault finding on the ABS and brake warning light connections. Therefore the instrument panel lights up the warning lights when the ABS computer is not connected. In the absence of an entered tyre circumference, a fault is registered in the computer memory and the ABS warning light flashes. The ABS and EBD (Electronic Braking Distribution) functions are ensured but the vehicle speed is calculated with the maximum circumference.

NOTES
Special notes: None.
Try to establish dialogue with a computer on another vehicle to make sure that the diagnostic tool is not faulty. If the tool is not causing the fault and dialogue cannot be established with any other computer on the same car, it may be that a faulty computer is disrupting diagnostic line K. Disconnect the computers one at a time to locate the fault. Check the voltage of the battery and carry out the operations necessary to obtain a voltage which is to specification (9.5 volts < U battery < 17.5 volts).
Check the presence and the condition of the ABS fuse on the passenger compartment fuse board (10A). Check that the computer connector is properly connected and check the condition of its wiring. Check the connection and condition of the connection at the intermediate junctions R107 dashboard / front of engine and R255 front of engine / ABS. Check the ABS earth wires (tighten the two earth screws above the ABS assembly). Check that the computer is correctly supplied: – Earth on track 19 of the 31-track connector, – + after ignition on track 15 of the 31-track connector
Check that the diagnostic socket is correctly supplied: – +before ignition feed on track 16. – Earth on track 5. Check the continuity and the insulation of the lines connecting the diagnostic socket / ABS computer: – Across track 12 of the computer connector and track 15 of the diagnostic socket. – Across track 11 of the computer connector and track 7 of the diagnostic socket.
If dialogue is still not established following these various checks, replace the ABS computer.

Locking of one or more wheels
NOTES
Special notes only refer to this customer complaint after performing a complete check with the diagnostic tool.
Reminder: wheel locking on a vehicle fitted with ABS or tyre squeal, experienced by a customer as locking, may be linked to normal system operation and should not automatically be considered as faults: – Locking is allowed below 3 mph (6 km/h) (the system will not provide regulation). – Braking with ABS regulation on very poor roads (significant grating). – -----------------------------------------------------
However, if the wheel(s) are actually locking, lift the vehicle so that you can turn the wheels and check for: – possible reversal of the speed sensor connection. Use the Wheel speed function in the list of parameters while turning the relevant wheels and check the consistency of the results obtained. If the value measured is zero, turn the other wheels to confirm an electrical reversal of the sensors and repair the wiring. – possible reversal of the pipes on the hydraulic unit. Using the actuator commands, test the solenoid valves by depressing the brake pedal and check the presence of ten unlocking/locking cycles on the wheel affected (refer to the Help section). If the ten cycles do not occur on the wheel tested, (wheel remains locked), see if they occur on another wheel (if a bad connection is confirmed: repair). If the ten cycles cannot be completed on a wheel without inverting the pipes, replace the hydraulic unit. Check the condition of the ABS targets and that they conform. Also check the sensor / target air gap on one rotation of each front wheel (impossible to check on rear axle). 0.1 mm < air gap on one front wheel rotation < 1.9 mm If the fault persists following these checks, replace the hydraulic unit.

NOTES
Special notes only refer to this customer complaint after performing a complete check with the diagnostic tool.
Disconnect one wheel speed sensor. Start the engine and ensure that only the ABS fault warning light comes on. Do not drive the vehicle if the brake fault warning light also lights up, as the brake limiter function is no longer assured. Carry out a road test with the ABS thus out of service. Does the fault persist under these conditions?
yes
If the brake pedal travel is relatively long, bleed the brake circuit. If the travel is normal, check the tyre pressures, the front axle, or for any leaks in the circuit.
no Lift the vehicle so that you can turn the wheels and check: – for possible reversal of the speed sensor connection. – for possible reversal of the pipes on the hydraulic unit. For these two tests, refer to and apply the methods described in CHART 7. Check the condition of the ABS targets and that they conform. Also check the sensor/target air gap by rotating each front wheel one revolution. If the fault persists, replace the hydraulic unit.

Unexpected ABS operation at low speed and with light pedal pressure
NOTES
Special notes only refer to this customer complaint after performing a complete check with the diagnostic tool.
Brake pedal vibrations may be felt which are connected to the reactions of the system in particular situations: – Crossing rumble strips. – Tight cornering with lifting of the inside rear wheel. These vibrations may be associated with the simple activation of the brake limiter when pressure on the rear axle is limited. If the problem is different, check the speed sensor connectors (micro-breaks) as well as the air gaps.

No communication with the ABS computer
NOTES
Special notes only refer to this customer complaint after performing a complete check with the diagnostic tool.
Try to establish dialogue with a computer on another vehicle to make sure that the diagnostic tool is not faulty. If the tool is not faulty and dialogue cannot be established with any other computer from the same vehicle, it is possible that a faulty computer is interfering with diagnostic bus K and L.
Check that the computer is correctly supplied: – Earth on track 19 of the 31-track connector. – + after ignition on track 15 of the 31-track connector
Check that the diagnostic socket is correctly supplied: – + before ignition feed on track 16.
