3.0 Insulation Coordination for 380 kV System 3.1 Insulation Level The possible overvoltages in the system may be classified as follows : a) Temporary Power Frequency Overvoltages. These may occur due to the voltage rise in unfaulted phases during Sngle Line to Ground fault, Sudden Load Rejection or due to Ferroresonence effects. b) Switching Overvoltages. These may occur during normal line switching, high speed auto reclosing, out of phase switching of cable circuits, capacitor banks, reactors, circuit breaker restriking, current chopping etc. These over voltages are predominant in long transmission lines of 230 kV and 380 kV.

b) Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage ( MCOV) As per guideline of item 4.1 of SES-P-119.06, the MCOV is selected as 80% of Arrestor Voltage Rating, i.e., i.e., MCOV = 360 x 0.8 = 288 kV

As per item no. 4.18 of Data Schedule for SF6 Gas Insulated Switchgear, MCOV of Surge Arrestor, considered by manufacturer, is 288 kV.

As per recommendation of SES-P-119.06, Nominal Discharge Current for Surge Arrestors shall be 10 kA or 20 kA. As per recommendation of Table 06-1 of SES-P-119.06, Typical Arrestor Rating for 115 kV System is 108 kV. As per item no. 4.18 of Data Schedule for 115 kV SF6 Gas Insulated Switchgear, Rated Voltage of Surge Arrestor, considered by manufacturer, is 108 kV – which is in order b)

Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage ( MCOV)

Arrestors are further classified from class – 1 to 5 with ascending number indication higher energy absorption capability. As per item no. 4.18 of Data Schedule for 115 kV SF6 Gas Insulated Switchgear, Line Discharge Class considered by the manufacturer is 3 - with Maximum Energy Absorption Capability of 7.2 kJ / kV of Arrestor Rating and 8.9 kJ / kV of MCOV . The recommended Minimum Energy Absorption Capability of 108 kV Surge Arrestor, as per recommendation of Table – II of 35-SMSS-3 is 7.2 kJ/kV of Arrestor Rating.

DESCRIPTION

Since the offered figure is in line with the recommendation of SEC, hence this is in order.

The above study shows that the insulation levels selected for 380 kV and 115 kV GIS equipment and 380/115 kV Power Transformer are in order. Protection Level offered fofor the surge arrestors were reviewed and protection ratios were calculated for Lightning Impulse and Switching Impulse Surges. It shows that sufficient protection margin exists between protection levels of the Surge Arrestors and Insulation Levels of the equipment, thereby implying that the GIS equipments are well protected.
