1. INTRODUCTION TO THE SKIN

The skin is one of the largest organs and constitutes 16% of the human body weight. It weighs around 5kgs and covers an area of about 2 square meters. It is one of the tissues in our body that duplicates the most and the fastest. The skin has three main functions: protection, regulation and sensation. The primary function of the skin is to act as a barrier. The skin provides protection from mechanical impacts, pressure, micro-organisms, radiation and chemicals. Skin also regulates several aspects of the body such as temperature via sweat and hair, changes in peripheral circulation and fluid balance. Finally, the skin contains an extensive network of nerve cells that detect and relay changes in the environment. There are separate receptors for heat, cold, touch, and pain.

2. ANATOMY OF THE SKIN The skin is comprised of three main layers: The epidermis: Its main job is to protect the body acting as a barrier and help control body temperature. It is made up of four types of cells: keratinocytes (which comprised the 90% of the epidermis), melanocytes, Langerhans cells and Merkel cells. The dermis is much thicker than the epidermis. It contains hair roots, blood vessels, lymph vessels, glands, and nerve endings. Blood and lymph vessels in the dermis bring nutrients to the dermis and epidermis. Glands make fluids the body needs, and the connective tissue (which builds an extracellular matrix) holds all these structures in place and allows the skin to stretch. The hypodermis is the subcutaneous tissue, which means “below the skin”. It is mostly made of fat and connective tissue. It connects the skin to muscles and bones and it also saves body heat, stores energy, and absorbs shock to protect the body from injury.

THE DIFFERENT SKIN TYPES, THEIR PECULIARITIES, HOW TO IDENTIFY AND CARE FOR THEM

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

There are five basic skin types. They are normal, oily, dry, combination and sensitive. Let’s take a look at how to determine your skin type.

A. Normal Skin

B. Oily Skin

C. Dry Skin

D. Combination Skin

E. Sensitive Skin

If your skin flushes with spicy food and adversely reacts to new products, you may have sensitive skin. Try this, take a sheet of blotting paper and gently pat it on your face. Hold it against a bright light. If you see little to no oil, you likely have dry skin. If the sheet picks up some oil from the T-zone, you have combination or normal skin. If it picks up oil from all parts of your face, you likely have oily skin.

NORMAL SKIN

Normal skin is also called eudermic. This means it is well-balanced. It is neither too oily nor too dry. It has balanced sebum production, good blood circulation and balanced pH levels and sebum production. How Can You Identify Normal Skin? Smooth texture Fine pores No sensitivity No blemishes Few or no breakouts AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

How To Take Care Of Normal Skin If you have normal skin, you don’t have to go all out with a skincare routine. However, you should make it a point to stay healthy, hydrated and follow a basic skincare regimen. These tips below will help Maintain Normal Skin. A. Stay Hydrated If you don’t drink enough water throughout the day, your skin may dry up and start getting flaky. It can also lead to excess sebum production. B. Wear Sunscreen Sunscreen is a must for overall skin health maintenance. Direct sun exposure can dry up your skin, cause wrinkles and dark patches. An oil-free sunscreen is recommended to avoid clogging skin pores. C. Moisturize Moisturizers are a must for any skin type. They keep the skin moist and prevent it from overproducing sebum. D. Remove Your Makeup Before Sleeping Makeup can clog pores and lead to breakouts. You want to avoid that by taking it off after a long day. E. Wash/Cleanse Your Face Before Sleeping Even if you don’t wear makeup, wash your face every night before you sleep. Dirt and bacteria from outside can clog pores.

OILY SKIN

Oily is used to describe a skin type with heightened sebum production. This over production is known as seborrhea. Oily skin is characterized by a greasy appearance. This skin type is prone to acne breakouts. Oily skin is the result of excess sebum production. How Can You Identify Oily Skin? Greasy appearance

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Open/Big pores Prone to breakouts What Causes Oily Skin? Hormonal Changes Hormonal imbalances during puberty or pregnancy can result in oily skin. Climate Where you live and the time of the year can contribute to oily skin. If you live in a humid or hot environment, it is likely to result in oily skin. Genetics Look around you. Do your immediate family members have oily skin? If the answer is yes, you most likely have it too! Large Pores Large pores tend to produce more sebum. Exfoliating Too Much/Using Harsh Soaps Sometimes, what you think is contributing to glowing skin may actually be the cause of diminishing skin health. Exfoliating too much or too hard can stimulate sebum production. Using harsh chemicals, not suitable for your skin type can also contribute to oily skin. TIPS FOR OILY SKIN: A. Moisturize Regularly Moisturizing regularly will keep your skin hydrated and prevent it from overproducing sebum. B. Stay Hydrated Drink enough water to keep your skin moist. This will prevent your skin from producing excess oil. C. Wash Your Face Twice A Day

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Wash your face two times a day to remove dirt and bacteria that may clog your pores. Don’t over wash because over washing can remove necessary oils from your skin. This can result in sensitive skin and make it more oil-prone.

DRY SKIN

Dry is used to describe a skin type that produces less sebum than normal skin. Dry skin is determined by flaky and rough texture. It can at times feel tight and cause irritation. As a result of the lack of sebum, Dry skin lacks the lipids that it needs to retain moisture and build a protective shield against external influences. This results in theflaky and rough appearance. How Can You Identify Dry Skin? Flaky and rough skin Uneven texture Itching Skin feels tight What Causes Dry Skin? A. Genetics If most of your family members have dry skin, you are likely to have it too. B. Season Dry skin is more common in dry climates and in the winter season due to lack of humidity. C. Long showers If you spend long hours in the shower, it can rip your skin of its necessary oils. This contributes to dry skin. D. Age As you grow older, sebum production in your skin reduces. This can result in flaky skin. Tips For Dry Skin Moisturize your skin regularly to keep it soft and hydrated AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Don’t spend too much time in the shower Pat your skin gently while drying yourself up Drink lots of water Use a humidifier to retain your skin’s natural moisture Use sunscreen to prevent your skin from getting dehydrated

COMBINATION SKIN

Combination skin is a mixture of two skin types - dry skin and oily skin. Usually in combination skin types, the T-zone is oily and the cheeks are dry.

How Can You Identify Combination Skin? Oily T-zone and dry cheeks Breakouts only on forehead, chin and nose Sensitive cheeks What Causes Combination Skin? A. Genetics If any of your parents and other family members have combination skin, you may have it too. B. Products Sometimes, harsh products can cause a change in skin type and contribute to excess sebum production in the T-zone. C. Climate You may see a change in your skin type depending on the change in the climate. For example, summers may make your skin oily. Your skin may feel dry during the winter months.

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Tips For Combination Skin A. Use Cleansers If you have combination skin, the pores in your T-zone are larger than the rest of your face. Harsh products may clog your pores. Using a gentle cleanser is recommended. B. Exfoliate Gently And Once in A While Exfoliating every day isn’t recommended for any skin type. It can remove necessary oils from your skin. When you exfoliate, don’t scrub your T-zone too much. Scrubbing too hard can damage your skin. C. Wear Sunscreen Sunscreen is a must-have skincare product. Choose an oil-free sunscreen if you have combination skin. D. Maintain Two Separate Skin Care Routines Products that work for dry skin may be harsh on oily skin. Follow a separate skincare regimen for your T-zone. Don’t use the same products for your T-zone and the rest of your face. E. Buy Oil-Free Products Whether it's a sunscreen or makeup, buy oil-free products to avoid clogged pores.

SENSITIVE SKIN

How Can You Identify Sensitive Skin? Skin feels itchy and tight Parts of your body have uneven texture Becomes oily in summers Gets dry in winters Reacts to skincare Becomes red after a hot water bath AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Feels itchy while wearing tight clothes Flushes easily after eating spicy food Are Allergies The Same As Skin Sensitivity? Allergies are more severe and can sometimes cause difficulty in breathing and nausea. If you are allergic to dust, it doesn’t necessarily mean your skin is sensitive. In skin care, you may be allergic to a particular ingredient but your skin may not be sensitive. It may be able to adapt to other products that don’t contain that ingredient. However, if you have sensitive skin, your skin will most likely react to harsh chemicals and skin products. Tips For Sensitive Skin A. Conduct A Patch Test This is mandatory if you want to avoid your skin from reacting. Don’t use a product without testing it on your hand. Wait for 24 hours after the patch test. If your skin doesn’t react to it, go ahead and apply it to your face. B. Don’t Overdo Your Skincare Routine Buy a mild cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen. Don’t apply too many products to your face. C. Don’t Blindly Believe the “Hypoallergenic” Label Products claiming to be “hypoallergenic” may not necessarily suit you. Conduct a patch test before applying these products as well.

3. COMMON SKIN AILMENTS/SKIN TREATMENTS

Skin Ailments:  

Rash: Nearly any change in the skin’s appearance can be called a rash. Most rashes are from simple skin irritation; others result from medical conditions. Dermatitis: A general term for inflammation of the skin. Atopic dermatitis (a type of eczema) is the most common form.

   

Eczema: Skin inflammation (dermatitis) causing an itchy rash. Most often, it’s due to an overactive immune system. Psoriasis: An autoimmune condition that can cause a variety of skin rashes. Silver, scaly plaques on the skin are the most common form. Dandruff: A scaly condition of the scalp may be caused by seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, or eczema. Acne: The most common skin condition, acne affects over 85% of people at some time in life. Cellulites: Inflammation of the dermis and subcutaneous tissues, usually due to an infection. A red, warm, often painful skin rash generally results. Skin abscess (boil or furuncle): A localized skin infection creates a collection of pus under the skin. Some abscesses must be opened and drained by a doctor in order to be cured. Rosacea: A chronic skin condition causing a red rash on the face. Rosacea may look like acne, and is poorly understood. Warts: A virus infects the skin and causes the skin to grow excessively, creating a wart. Warts may be treated at home with chemicals, duct tape, or freezing, or removed by a physician. Melanoma: The most dangerous type of skin cancer, melanoma results from sun damage and other causes. A skin biopsy can identify melanoma. Basal cell carcinoma: The most common type of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma is less dangerous than melanoma because it grows and spreads more slowly. Seborrheic keratosis: A benign, often itchy growth that appears like a “stuck-on” wart. Seborrheic keratoses may be removed by a physician, if bothersome. Actinic keratosis: A crusty or scaly bump that forms on sun-exposed skin. Actinic keratoses can sometimes progress to cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma: A common form of skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma may begin as an ulcer that won’t heal, or an abnormal growth. It usually develops in sun-exposed areas. Herpes: The herpes viruses HSV-1 and HSV-2 can cause periodic blisters or skin irritation around the lips or the genitals. Hives: Raised, red, itchy patches on the skin that arise suddenly. Hives usually result from an allergic reaction. Tinea versicolor: A benign fungal skin infection creates pale areas of low pigmentation on the skin. Viral exantham: Many viral infections can cause a red rash affecting large areas of the skin. This is especially common in children.

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

  

Shingles (herpes zoster): Caused by the chickenpox virus, shingles is a painful rash on one side of the body. A new adult vaccine can prevent shingles in most people. Scabies: Tiny mites that burrow into the skin cause scabies. An intensely itchy rash in the webs of fingers, wrists, elbows, and buttocks is typical of scabies. Ringworm: A fungal skin infection (also called tinea). The characteristic rings it creates are not due to worms.

Skin Tests

  

Skin biopsy: A piece of skin is removed and examined under a microscope to identify a skin condition. Skin testing (allergy testing): Extracts of common substances (such as pollen) are applied to the skin, and any allergic reactions are observed. Tuberculosis skin test (purified protein derivative or PPD): Proteins from the tuberculosis (TB) bacteria are injected under the skin. In someone who’s had TB, the skin becomes firm. Skin Treatments

       

Corticosteroids (steroids): Medicines that reduce immune system activity may improve dermatitis. Topical steroids are most often used. Antibiotics: Medicines that can kill the bacteria causing cellulitis and other skin infections. Antiviral drugs: Medicines can suppress the activity of the herpes virus, reducing symptoms. Antifungal drugs: Topical creams can cure most fungal skin infections. Occasionally, oral medicines may be needed. Antihistamines: Oral or topical medicines can block histamine, a substance that causes itching. Skin surgery: Most skin cancers must be removed by surgery. Immune modulators: Various drugs can modify the activity of the immune system, improving psoriasis or other forms of dermatitis. Skin moisturizers (emollients): Dry skin is more likely to become irritated and itchy. Moisturizers can reduce symptoms of many skin conditions.

4. SKINCARE DOS AND DONTS: BASIC SKINCARE ROUTINE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Building A Daily Skin Care Routine

No matter what your skin type is, a daily skin care routine can help you maintain overall skin health and improve specific concerns like acne, scarring, and dark spots. A daily skin care routine has four basic steps you can do once in the morning and once before you sleep.

Sequence Matters, Here’s Why Applying your skin care products in the proper order ensures that your skin receives the full benefits of each product. The order of application is incredibly important. The skin’s job is to keep things out, but many of the skin care products we use have ingredients we want to get in. Only a very small amount of these key ingredients can penetrate the skin, even when perfectly formulated and perfectly applied. If you don’t apply products in the correct order, you will not see the best results from your skin care regimen.

How to Layer Your Skin Care Products: A Step-by-Step Guide So which product goes on top of what, you ask? An easy rule of thumb to follow is to apply your products with the thinnest consistency to thickest, or from liquid to cream. In general, think thin-to-thick, but you also want to first use the products with the ingredients that are most important to penetrate into the skin like antioxidants in serums and finish with the products that need to sit on top of the skin like emollients and humectants in moisturizers.

Basic Regimen Step 1: Cleanser In the morning, start by splashing your face with warm water or, if you must, wash with a gentle face cleanser designed for your skin type.

Step 2: Toner Most people choose to skip toners, partly because there’s a lingering assumption that most toners are harsh and irritate the skin. Fortunately, that’s not the case anymore. While they don’t physically “shrink” pores, the new breed of toners can serve multiple purposes, like act as AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

a delivery system for antioxidants, vitamin B derivatives and even toning acids. Additionally, each type of toner is intended for a different skin issue, so it’s important to use the right kind for your skin concern. However, if you have lived all your life without using a toner and your skin looks healthy the there is no need to start using one. Toners were created to help return the skin’s pH after it became too basic from harsh soaps. Face cleansers are now so much better balanced that toners are not a required step anymore. That said, if you have a toner that you like using, there’s no harm in sticking with it.

Step 3: Antioxidant Serums Serums are super-concentrated, nutrient-dense treatments that address specific concerns, so it’s better to keep them as close to the skin as possible. There are various serums available on the market today, but it is recommended to use antioxidant serums, which provide a variety of benefits—from blunting your skin’s inflammatory response to neutralizing damage from UV rays and environmental pollutants.

Step 4: Eye Creams It’s vital to apply an eye cream at least every night—if not twice a day—starting in your 20s. It’s about maintaining the health and thickness of the eyelid skin. Improving the skin quality in this area early on ensures that the eyelid skin does not easily lose laxity and its smooth appearance later on. For best results, consistency is key. Regular use of eye cream over time will keep the eyelid skin elastic and can improve or prevent against some fine lines or collagen loss. Remember: Nothing is magic. Results don’t occur overnight. You can further protect the delicate skin around your eyes by choosing an eye cream with SPF or applying sunscreen every day. It’s also recommended to remember to wear sunglasses when outside to protect against UV-light damage and lines that can creep up around the corners of your eyes from squinting.

Step 5: Spot Treatment

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Prescription medications and acne spot treatments need to be applied as close to the skin as possible to maximize their benefits. As acne spot treatments differ in active ingredients, check your product packaging or consult your dermatologist for the best way to apply it. Prescriptionstrength benzoyl peroxide, a common acne spot treatment ingredient, has a one- to three-hour working time. Any cream that comes in contact with it before it has completed its work will likely inhibit the active ingredient from working properly. Remember that acne spot treatments can dry out your skin, so always apply only on spots where you need it.

Step 6: Moisturizer Yes, everyone needs a moisturizer, even if you have oily skin. Even though your body has its own natural lubricating system consisting of glands that secrete oil (or sebum) to maintain a protective coating against harsh outside conditions and infections, most of us do need extra hydration after the havoc that sun, weather and harsh chemicals wreak on our skin. Most experts recommend that the best time to apply a moisturizer is while the skin is still damp, so the sooner you go through applying your serum and treatment, the sooner you’re able to lock in much-needed hydration with your moisturizer. If you’re using an acne spot treatment, you may want to skip those areas when applying your moisturizer to make sure the ingredients in it won’t interfere with the active ingredients in your spot treatment.

Step 7: Sun Screen Sunscreen should be the last step in your daytime skin care routine if you’re using a physical or mineral sunscreen, which works by physically blocking UV rays. This step becomes tricky when you’re using a chemical sunscreen.Chemical sunscreens have to be absorbed into the skin to be effective, so applying after your moisturizer will delay and hinder that. However, if you apply your chemical sunscreen before your moisturizer, your moisturizer will not work as well either because the skin is coated with chemical sunscreen. To get around this, it is recommended to use physical sunscreen with zinc and to apply it after your moisturizer. Zinc is safe, effective and provides the broadest protection against UVA and UVB rays. As for those who like using chemical sunscreens, try to look for a formula that offers moisturizing benefits, so you can get your daily hydration needs while protecting your skin.

7. THE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES OF ORGANIC SKINCARE INGREDIENTS, THEIR FUNCTIONS AND EXAMPLES  Base Solvents Just as the name resonates, Base Solvents are Liquid ingredients that serve as foundational base ingredient in the formulation. They usually make up to 50% or more when they are used in making Natural/Organic skincare products. Common examples of Base Solvents are: Distilled/ Deionized Water, Aloe-vera Juice, and Rose Water etc

 Hydrosols Hydrosols are produced during the process of making Essential oils by steam distillation. Hydrosols are like water but are richer in nutrients than ordinary or deionized/ distilled water. Examples of Hydrosols are Lavender Water, Rose water etc.

 Emulsifiers Another class of ingredients are Emulsifiers.Emulsifiers are class of Ingredients that make two immiscible liquids miscible through the process of emulsification. E.g. Water and oil do not mix together butan emulsifier will help to mix water and oil together. In soap making, Emulsifiers are referred to as SURFACTANTS. When making soap Surfactants primarily make Water and Oil mix together. Example of Surfactant is Lye (sodium hydroxide). Common examples of Emulsifiers are: E-wax, Xyliance, ECOMulse, Olivem 1000 etc

 Co-Emulsifier This class or category of ingredients may also be called Stabilizers or Thickeners. Stabilizer or Thickener help to increase the consistency, volume and viscosity of cosmetic products, thereby AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

providing more stability and better product performance. Common examples of Co-emulsifier are Stearic Acid, Cetyl alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Beeswax, Xanthan Gum, Candelilla Wax etc. They support the function of Emulsifier so they are called Co-emulsifier. Please note that when mixing water and oil together; adding a co-emulsifier alone won't mix the water and oil together. Emulsifier is the main class of ingredient that helps to perfectly mix water and oil together.

 Emollients Emollients are plant oils that contain essential (important) fatty acids.Emollients serve major functions such as soothing, smoothing and softening of the skin texture. Sub categories of Emollient include Carrier oils and Butters. Carrier oils are essential fatty oils that appear as liquid at room temperature while butters are solid at room temperature. Common examples of Carrier oils are: Jojoba oil, Argan oil, Rosehip seed oil, Pomegranate, Olive Squalene, Macadamia, Grape seed oil.Common examples of plant Butters include: Shea butter, Mango butter, Coffee butter.Carrier oils are oils derived from the Fatty part of a plant. The fatty part of a plant is usually the seeds, fruits, kernels or nuts. Carrier oils are also called Vegetable oils or *Base oils*.We refer to *Vegetable oils as *Carrier Oils* because of their ability to *penetrate through the skin*. Since Carrier oils have ability to penetrate into the skin, we use them to ‘ *carry* ' and ' *dilute* ' *Essential Oils* *Essential Oils* are really *harsh* when applied directly on the skin (*they can burn the skin if applied directly on the skin*).More so, *Essential Oils* really dry fast when applied on the skin, they cannot penetrate into the skin by themselves. So, Carrier Oils help in *diluting* and *carrying* *essential oils* into the skinthus, the name *Carrier* oils. Like I mentioned earlier, *Carrier oils* are oils that are pressed from the *seeds, fruits, kernels or nuts* of plants.

HOW ARE *VEGETABLE/ CARRIER OILS* MADE?

*Carrier oils* can be made through any of the four (4) different methods 1. *Mechanical Extraction* 2. *Solvent Extraction and Distillation* AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE 3. *Refined Process* 4. *Oil Infusion Or Maceration Of Oil*

 *Humectants* This category of ingredients are ingredients that have *the ability to attract water to the skin and draw water into the skin*. Common Examples of ingredients in this category are: *Glycerin, Honey, Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5), Hyaluronic Acid, Sodium Lactate*

 *Occulsives* When *humectants* attract water to the skin, *Occulsive* are ingredients that *help to keep the attracted moisture from escaping too quickly from the skin cells*. That is, *Occlusive help retain water* in the skin cells. Common example of ingredient that perform *Occulsive* function are *Waxes*: *Beeswax*, *Candelilla wax* are common examples of occulsive ingredient

 *Aromatherapy Or Essential Oils* These class of ingredients give *Aroma, healing or therapeutic properties* to the skin. Some of them are used as Fragrance, due to their intense smell. Common examples of Aromatherapy ingredients are: *Lavender essential oil, Lemon essential oil, Tea tree essential oil*

 *Antioxidants* These are ingredients that *help improve shelf life of oils, so they won't go rancid on time*.Common Examples of Antioxidants Are: *Vitamin E Oil, Rosemary Oil and Grape Seed Oil*

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

 *High Performance/ Active Ingredients* These are ingredients that help *boost the efficiency of a skin care product*.Common examples of this category of ingredients are: *Vitamins* such as Vitamin B, Vitamin C, *Acids* Such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxyl Acids *Whitening/Lightening Powders* such as Kojic acid, Alpha arbutin, Sepiwhite, Sym white, Giga white powder, Glutathione powder, *Botanical Extracts*Camwood powder, Sandalwood powder, Mulberry powder, Licorice powder etc

 *Aesthetics* These are ingredients that *do not provide any function* in the product but *only add* to the *attractiveness, beauty or outlook* of a skin care product.Common examples of *Aesthetic Ingredients* are: 1. *Natural flavors such as vanilla pod*. *Vanilla pod* give the *scent of vanilla when used to make a product*. 2. *Rose petals* adds beauty and makes customers believe that manufacturers used natural ingredients to make the product 3. *Mica* - they add high pigmentation colors to skincare products.

 *Preservatives* *Preservatives* are added to skincare products *that contain water*, in order *to kill or stop growth of microbes in a product*.This way, preservatives help to extend the product life cycle.Common examples of *Preservatives* used in natural skincare products are *Optiphen, Germall plus, Optiphen plus, MethylParaben*

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

 *Chelating Agents* *Chelating Ingredients/ agents* are ingredients that *help prevent heavy (toxic) metals* from entering into our body/ bloodstream.Toxic metals are usually deposited in the water we use in bathing or through *the old (rusty) pipes* that bring water to our bathrooms/ toilets. The term *Chelate* means that this class of ingredient *react with toxic metals to reduce their potency* on our skin. Chelating agents provide similar function to *Preservatives* in that they *help preserve products from becoming too harsh on the skin by also reacting with trace of toxic metals in the skincare products*. Popular example of *Chelating agents* are *Sodium EDTA, Tetrasodium EDTA*... if you try to read the list of ingredients of your *soaps or hand wash*, you will normally see this ingredient listed.

 *ph Adjusters* What are *pH Adjusters*? Just as the name sound, they are ingredients that help increase or reduce the pH of a product. Common examples are*Citric acid, lactic acid, sodium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate*.

8. EMULSIONS What are emulsions? These are products made of *Water* and *Oils* (including butters) and blended by *Emulsifier* and Co-emulsifier (optional).Common examples of Emulsion are: *creams* and *lotions* 

*Creams*

Creams contain *lesser water when compared to lotions but contain more oils than lotion*. Hence they are thicker than Lotions. 

*Lotions*

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Lotions have same ingredients with cream but *have more water content than creams*. As a result, lotions are *lighter, and easier to apply*. Lotions have *lower amount of oils and butter* in them. They are better recommended for use during the *sunny or hot climate*. This is because lotions hydrates well and are easily absorbed into the body.

9. AROMATHERAPY Aromatherapy is the method of employing essential oils to protect, heal and beautify. Essential oils can help the body mitigate everyday ailments; strengthen your immune system, organs, and glands, fight bacteria, fungi and viruses; lower your stress levels; and tone, relax and strengthen your muscles. They can assist in healing the body itself; help to keep your skin and hair in tiptop condition and your home fragrant and clean.

10.

ESSENTIAL OILS

An essential oil is that aromatic, volatile liquid that comes from inside flowers, shrubs, trees, roots, bushes, and other aromatic parts of plants. Many people call essential oils the lifeblood of plants because they carry oxygen and nutrients within the plant and are part of the regenerative process of the plant. Essential oils play many roles including infection control, humidity control, hormonal effects, wound healing, and attracting or repelling insects, birds, and animals. Essential oils, contrary to the use of the word “oil” are not really oily, and they are clear and volatile. There are seemingly endless choices when it comes to buying essential oils and for every oil there are at least a dozen uses. There are many ways to use essential oils:      

Incorporate with carrier oils to make massage oils Add in minute quantities to bath, along with a carrier such as milk Incorporate with a carrier oil to make insect repellent Incorporate in cosmetic, lotion and healing ointments Use in shampoos, conditioners and hair products Use to add antibacterial and antiviral qualities to room-fresher sprays

Essential oils are volatile, which means they evaporate rapidly and contain the natural smell and characteristics of the plant. This can make them too strong to apply undiluted. Carrier oils AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

do not evaporate, making them perfect for diluting especially strong essential oils — reducing the concentration of the essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities.

Oils that are gentle and natural will not irritate your skin. Using oils on oily skin can help to regulate sebum production; you just have to ensure using oil that will not clog your pores. The comedogenic scale is a five-point scale that tells you how comedogenic that ingredient is. An oil that has a comedogenic rating of 0 is widely believed to be non-comedogenic and will not clog your pores and oils that have a rating of 4 – 5 should be avoided as is basically a guaranteed chance of breaking out.

12.

*COMEDOGENIC RATING OF OILS*

Comedogenic rating is the ability for the oil to clog your pores. It starts at 0 and goes through 5. The higher the number the higher chances you have to the oil clogging your pores. Using a noncomedogenic oil means that oil will not clog your pores. Acne and oily prone skin types should be using oils that have a 0-1 rating, anything higher you are running the risk of clogged pores AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

and more breakouts. Normal/Combo skin type should be able to use oils with ratings up to a 2 and dry/mature skin type should be able to use oils with ratings up to a 3. Always keep in mind your skin is yours, you know it best so always listen to your skin. Don't use products just because they are popular or you got them for free, stick to products that your skin likes. 0 – Does not clog pores 1 – Low risk of clogging pores 2 – Moderately low (May clog pores for some but be fine for most) 3 – Moderate (Will most like clog acne prone/oily skin type, but may not clog dry skin types. It all depends on the skin type) 4 – Fairly high (Clogs pores for most people) 5 – High probability your pores will become clogged Take note that Linoleic Acid is non clogging, while Oleic Acid is clogging Name

HOW TO TURN COSMETIC FORMULAR INTO A RECIPE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Professional cosmetic formulas are written in percentages. So how do you convert a formula written in percentages into a weight based recipe you can make? Let’s make an example with a Converting a formula into a 100g test batch size How to calculate different batch sizes. The examples used are for a simple skincare product; however the same calculations apply to any type of cosmetic product such as hair care or body care. Converting a formula into a 100g test batch size One of the benefits of writing a formula in percentages is that it’s very easy to make different batch sizes, and when we talk about a batch, we simply mean a quantity of your product. That could be large or small depending on how many individual products you want to make. So let’s start with an easy example. Here is a simple formula for facial oil which uses 50% jojoba, 30% rosehip, 18.4% macadamia, 1% lavender, 0.5% frankincense, 0.1% Vitamin E Formula

100g batch

50% jojoba oil

50g jojoba oil

30% rosehip oil

30g rosehip oil

18.4% macadamia oil

18.4g macadamia oil

1% lavender essential oil

1g lavender essential oil

0.5% frankincense essential oil 0.5g frankincense essential oil 0.1 % Vitamin E

0.1g Vitamin E

If I wanted to start by making a 100 gram batch, this is a very easy calculation to make. So to change a formula into a 100 gram batch, all you need to do is replace the percentage symbol with grams symbol; you can do a straight swap. Fifty percent jojoba oil would be 50 grams of jojoba oil, 30% rosehip oil would be 30 grams of rosehip oil, etc. So as you can see, this is very easy to do.

If you want to make a test batch of something like a cream or a lotion or body butter, then a 100-gram batch is a good size to start with. For those of you familiar with ounces, 100 grams is about three-and-a-half ounces.

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

How To Calculate Different Batch Sizes When you’re confident that you like your product, and you don’t want to make any more adjustments to your formula, then you’ll most likely at some point want to make a larger batch size. To do this, you firstly need to decide how much product you want to make – the total size of your batch. You then need to work out how much of each ingredient to use, and there is an easy calculation to make. This calculation is the percentage of the ingredient divided by 100, multiplied by the batch size. percentage / 100 x batch size In this example, we’ve chosen to make a 250-gram batch. So in the example of jojoba, this would be 50 divided by 100, multiplied by 250, equals 125 grams. Formula

250g batch

50% jojoba oil

125g jojoba oil

30% rosehip oil

75g rosehip oil

18.4% macadamia oil

46g macadamia oil

1% lavender essential oil

2.5g lavender essential oil

0.5% frankincense essential oil 1.25g frankincense essential oil 0.1 % Vitamin E

0.25g Vitamin E

You simply need to do this calculation for every ingredient, and write down the corresponding weight of that ingredient that you would need to include in that batch. Once you’ve calculated all of the individual ingredient weights, total them up to check that the total weight equals the total batch size that you want to make, and then you’ll know that you’ve done all the calculations correctly.. So as you can see calculating different batch sizes is a necessary skill to make larger batches of your product. It’s an easy calculation to do but care must be taken to ensure it is correct.

*When calculating the amount of ingredients to put in your formulation, there is something we call the base ingredients. This is the major ingredients that are the ingredients that will be more in a formulation* *If you notice black soap has the highest percentage there because it is the main ingredient. You need to make sure that when you add everything up it has to be up to 100 no more or less because we are calculating in % ( percentage)* *Since we will be calculating in percentage everything has to be 100%*. *Now let's say we are making it in a 200gram cup and we want to make 12 cups of the 200 gram cup.* *This is how it is calculated* You will first multiply 200 times 12 that is ➡➡ 200× 12 = 2,400 grams Which means that 2,400grams is the total grams for twelve cups of black soaps.

Now let’s calculate

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

HOW TO MAKE HERBAL INFUSED OILS

A herbal infused oil (also known as a macerated oil) is carrier oil that has been ‘infused’ with the goodness of a herb or a flower. By letting herbs and flowers infuse in oil for a certain period of time we are able to extract many of the powerful and healing properties of the plant into a usable form. Many herbs are suitable for infusing, both those with high levels of volatile oils and those with fat-soluble components. You can try infusing herbs such as rosemary, lavender, peppermint, plantain, calendula and comfrey, which lend themselves well to making herbal infused oils. The basic idea is that the plant is immersed into a good-quality carrier/fixed oil such as almond oil, sunflower oil, jojoba or olive oil and either left naturally to heat in the sun over a period of few weeks, or heated in a bain-marie over a couple of hours. The oil absorbs many of the plant’s properties and the leached plant material is then strained out of the oil.

The oil that has been infused can then be used to make skincare formulations, balms, salves, creams, hair treatments, soaps and more. There are so many blending options to choose from and they are such fun to make and use. Using dried herbs will ensure the longest shelf life of your oil. Using fresh herbs may introduce moisture into your infused oil, which will spoil it.

22.

HOW TO MAKE ORANGE/LEMON OIL

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

There are two ways to make your oils. *The first method is with heat while the second method is without heat.* For The First Method:    

Get your Oranges or lemons and wash them thoroughly to remove any pesticide or dirt. You can use any number as long as the oil covers the peels in the jar completely. Use knife or a grater to get the peels of the fruit. Be careful while doing this so as not to add the pits else it will make the oil bitter. After getting all the peels, you may want to dry them in order not to add moisture to the oil and bring about spoilage. After drying them, pour the peels into a jar and cover them up completely with olive oil making sure to give them a vigorous shake every day. Allow them stay in a place with warm sunlight for 2 to 4 days and sieve the oils out of the peel.

That’s your orange or lemon oil. For The Second Method:   

23.

Wash thoroughly like the first method. Get the peels off the fruits like before too and dry. After drying your orange peels, pour them into a jar and cover with olive oil and heat at low heat in a double boiler for 30 mins. Make sure the oil does not boil over so as not to destroy its properties. After this, take the jar off the heat and sieve out the oil. That’s your Orange Oil or lemon.

HOW TO MAKE CARROT OIL

Making carrot Oil is pretty much the same method as stated above. The only difference is you grate the actual carrot this time. Or you can still use the other method that involves heating. It also applies for carrots.

HOW TO MAKE COLD PRESSED COCONUT OIL Mature Coconuts (3 coconuts makes just over 1/2 cup solid oil) A screwdriver/drill A hammer

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE            

A tea towel One large bowl and 2 medium size bowls Small Sharp knife Vegetable peeler High speed blender 1 cup of non-chlorinated water for each coconut (leave water to stand for 24 hours for chlorine to evaporate) Natural Unbleached Cheesecloth Sieve Ladle Sterilized Pyrex dish Mesh strainer Empty sterilized glass jar to store your oil in

1) Begin by removing the water from your coconuts. The easiest way is to drill two holes at the top, slightly pointy end. Pour the coconut water into a bowl, but don’t discard, as we will use it later. 2) Once the water has been collected from all the coconuts, it’s time to crack open the shell. The safest way is to wrap the coconut in a tea towel. Then, using the hammer, strike the coconut with a heavy blow. It may take a few attempts, but eventually the coconut shell should crack, exposing the white mature meat. Repeat this process with all the coconuts. 3) Now you need to extract the flesh from the shell. You can use the tip of a clean sharp knife to run around the edges of the shell to free the meat. Once all the meat has been collected, using a vegetable peeler, peel the brown hard skin away. You will be left with the coconut water, the peelings and the coconut. Discard the peelings. They’re great for your compost! 4) Rinse your coconut using purified water. Now we need the blender. Blend the coconut water and coconut meat together, on very high speed, for a couple of minutes. We want the coconut pieces to be of very fine texture. 5) Remove the coconut from the blender and place in the large bowl. Add the non-chlorinated water to this bowl too. Using our hands, we need to squeeze the coconut flakes and water together, until the mixture looks very white and creamy. Continue mixing and squeezing for about 30 times. Then, leave to stand at room temperature for 3 hours. 6) After three hours, you’ll see that the cream has risen to the top. We need the cheesecloth, sieve and two bowls. Place a sieve on the larger bowl, and then the cheesecloth on top. We need ladle the coconut liquid mixture on to the cheesecloth, and squeeze to extract the liquid from the coconut. Once the liquid has been extracted, we empty the coconut flakes into our AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

other bowl. Repeat this process until all the liquid is one bowl and the coconut flakes are in another bowl. 7) We no longer require the coconut flakes; you can use it to make coconut macaroons or coconut flour. You can compost it too; it is highly nutritious for your soil. 8) Now we are left with just the liquid which we extracted from the coconut flakes. Place the water in a clean shallow container, such as a Pyrex dish. Cover this with some cling film. 9) If you live in a cool environment, where room temperature is below 70F or 21C, leave to stand at room temperature for 48 hours. Then put it in the fridge for three hours to overnight to solidify. But if you leave in a Hot Environment, you will have to do things a bit differently. Leave the dish at room temperature for 24 hours, and then put it in the fridge for the remaining 24 hours. 11) After it has been in the fridge, there will be a layer of solid white mass at the top. This is the oil. We need to carefully extract this from the remaining liquid. 12) You can use a mesh strainer to separate the solid oil from the liquid. Please view the above video to see how I extracted it. (There’s no speech in the video, so don’t worry if you can’t hear any audio) 13) You can discard the liquid, or you can continue the fermentation process to make your own coconut vinegar. Voila! Now you have your own virgin cold pressed coconut oil. You should keep it in the fridge. You can use the oil for cooking, just like you would normally use store brought VCO, or as a conditioning treatment for your hair.

25.

HOW TO MAKE MACERATED TURMERIC OIL

Peel a thumb-size chunk of turmeric and cut into small slices. Using a few drops of water, grind the chunk of turmeric to create a paste. On low heat, add the coconut oil to the pan. Add the turmeric paste and stir to combine for 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Squeeze oil through a piece of cheesecloth to eliminate any chunks. Using a funnel, pour the oil into your bottle.

CONCEPT OF EXFOLIATION

Exfoliation is a natural process of healthy skin, where the body sheds dead skin cells, allowing brand-new, fresh skin to be revealed beneath. Surface layers of skin naturally go through a near-constant process of shedding and renewal, but sometimes this can result in unevenness or may happen slower than we'd like. Skincare products can help speed up that process up, but what are the benefits of exfoliation for skin? Essentially, as we age, that process, often called cell-turnover, can sometimes start to slow down, allowing dead skin cells to build up, and eventually resulting in dullness, more visible wrinkles, and clogged and/or enlarged pores. When we speed up the process of cellturnover, we can help skin look younger, smoother, and brighter!

27.

TYPES OF EXFOLIATION: CHEMICAL AND MECHANICAL

There are two types of exfoliation used in skincare: chemical and mechanical. The goal of both types of exfoliation is to reveal new, fresh skin cells beneath the upper surface of the skin. The difference is in how they accomplish that goal. Chemical exfoliators are solutions that are slightly more acidic than the skin, allowing them to gently loosen dead skin cells from living ones. You can think of them as ingredients that loosen the “glue” between skin cells. Mechanical exfoliation, on the other hand, involves utilizing a slightly rough surface (like a washcloth, a face scrub, or a cleansing brush) or exfoliating substances (such as granules of salt, sugar, or even ground coffee) to slough off the top layer of skin.

Chemical Exfoliation: All About Acids

There are two major types of chemical exfoliators: alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). Oily, acne-prone skin often responds best to BHAs like salicylic acid. AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

For combination skin, AHAs like glycolic or mandelic acid can be extremely effective, as their moisture-binding properties allow them to keep skin from becoming dehydrated. For sensitive skin, lactic acid - the gentlest AHA, is a good starting point.

Chemical Exfoliants For Blackheads And Acne

The battle against blackheads and acne can be a difficult one, particularly if your skin is prone to over-producing oil. Acid exfoliants can dive deeply into pores, loosening clogs and leaving behind a clearer, fresher appearance, while simultaneously helping to fight the bacteria that can cause acne. BHAs, in particular, can help reduce closed comedones - small bumps under the skin that haven’t yet erupted into inflamed acne. AHAs can also help fight acne, as they help increase cell turnover and healing rates. They can also exfoliate a little more gently than manual scrubs, which can abrade skin's surface and make it more vulnerable to breakouts.

Beta Hydroxy Acids: Benefits For Acne-Prone Skin

Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are a great place to start for treating oily, congested skin, and the most common one is salicylic acid. All BHAs work as chemical exfoliates, increase cell turnover and healing rates, and can help kill bad bacteria. They also have the ability to travel deeply into pores, helping to purge excess “gunk” and preventing acne at its source. Studies have shown that salicylic acid use greatly reduces the number and severity of acne blemishes. One major benefit of salicylic acid is its lipid-solubility, allowing it to cut through sebum and oil in the skin, unlike glycolic and lactic acids, which are water soluble. BHAs can be a bit drying, but the benefits can be immense for oily, clogged skin - just be sure to use a moisturizer.

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Alpha Hydroxy Acids: Benefits For Aging Skin Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) also operate as exfoliants; the most common ones are glycolic acid, mandelic acid, and lactic acid. All work to speed cell turnover (thus allowing skin to heal itself faster and reveal fresh, brand new skin beneath), while also having the added benefit of being moisturizing for drier and/or combination skin types due to their water-binding properties. Lactic acid is the gentlest AHA (due to its large molecular size, which doesn’t allow it to penetrate skin quite as deeply as some other acids), which makes it ideal for sensitive skin. Glycolic acid is perhaps the most common AHA, and has the ability to travel the most deeply into the layers of skin due to its small molecular size. AHAs have even been shown to help boost collagen production. leaving skin firmer and plumper. All can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving users with a more youthful, revitalized appearance!

Mechanical Exfoliation: Benefits Of Scrubs & Tools Mechanical exfoliation involves the use of scrubs to physically dislodge and bough away dead skin cells and stimulate new cell turnover. This is usually achieved by the presence of the tiny abrasive materials called exfoliants present in the scrubs. While mechanical exfoliation can have many of the benefits for skin that chemical exfoliation does, you have to be careful about the tools you may choose to use. A gentle rotating brush or washcloth can be excellent choices, but many facial scrubs, especially those containing microbeads or particles with jagged edges, can cause tiny, invisible cuts in the skin, causing increased inflammation and a higher chance for infection. Make sure any scrubs you choose to use are gentle, and don’t contain sharp ingredients like ground nut shells or microbeads. When rubbing a scrub onto your face, use light pressure and go slowly. Where the skin is concerned, the gentler the tool the better!

*PH AND SKINCARE*

Potential hydrogen, or pH, refers to the acid-alkaline ratio of a substance, including the food you eat, the skincare products you use, or your skin itself. The pH scale ranges from 1 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline), with 7 is neutral. Our skin’s normal pH range is between 4.0 to 6.5, with 5.5 being the most optimum. Our skin is naturally a bit acidic as it serves as the body’s first defense mechanism against foreign elements. Acidity serves to keep allergens, bacteria, wind, and pollutants out while keeping moisture in. However, when our skin is at a high pH, our skin will not be happy in an alkaline environment as its barrier function is impaired, so it becomes dehydrated and lets irritants dive in to create inflammation. And also enzymes that break down collagen are activated at higher pH levels, so you age faster. To help keep skin’s pH from getting out of whack, you need to pay attention to the pH level of your skincare products.

*The Ph Of Skincare Product*

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

It is best to formulate products with a pH that falls in the range of normal, healthy skin. This range is most often cited as being between pH 4 and pH 7.Certain products have pH numbers outside this range such as from using an AHA or BHA exfoliant with a pH of 3.6. Acidic products cause mild disruption in the skin’s pH, and this stimulates the skin to produce key substances that make the skin to look smooth, supple, and hydrated. On the other hand, using highly acidic (pH 2.5 or lower) or alkaline (pH 8 or higher) products cause a more significant disruption in skin’s pH, so it takes skin longer to get back to normal.

During this extra time, the skin is vulnerable to factors that can trigger breakouts, signs of eczema, redness, and sensitivity. That is why daily use of products with too high or low pH is causing visibly and progressively damages to the skin As a reference, during your formulation, it is great to achieve the pH ranges for each of these skincare product categories : – : pH 4.5 – 7 –7 – 3.9, with any reading between 3 and 4 considered most effective –7 –6 – 3.2 Ideally, making skincare that has a pH of around 4.5 to 5.5 works well with the skin’s pH. Measuring the pH is measuring the concentration of the hydrogen ions in a solution. The higher the concentration of these hydrogen ions, the lower the pH is and consequently, the lower the concentration of the hydrogen ions, the higher the pH is. Where there is no water, there are no hydrogen ions. You will need to check the pH of any product that contains water, such as toners, emulsions, shampoos, body washes and more. You cannot measure the pH of a nonaqueous product such as an oil blend or a balm. Even if you disperse your balm or oil in water, it is the pH of the water you are measuring and not the pH of the product. *Measuring The Ph*

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

When you measure the pH of your cosmetic products such as creams, lotions, and shampoos, you need to dilute the product in distilled water, blend the mixture well and then measure the pH. Step 1. Take a sample Take a small sample of your product and transfer it into a clean, disinfected beaker. It is a good idea to prepare more products to have some extra for pH measurement. This means if you are planning to have a 50g jar of cream, make 60g as your total batch so you can have the extra for pH control. In the usual case, the sample you use for pH measurement is around 1g-5g only so not to waste your product. Step 2: Make a dilution PH is temperature dependent, wait until your sample reaches the room temperature and use room temperature water for your dilutions. Dilute your sample in distilled water, with a ratio of 1:9, e.g. product to water ratio is 10% and 90%, respectively. For example, if you have a 1g sample (10%), you will need to add 9g distilled water to it. Stir the dilution well. Step 3: Check the pH Although most modern pH-meters are equipped with a temperature sensor, if there are extreme temperature fluctuations in your country (icy cold in winter and hot in summer), you may even need to thermostat your samples for a few minutes before measurement. If you are using paper strips, dip it in the dilution and check the results using the chart on the packaging. If you are using a pH meter, dip it into the solution and keep it there till the reading stabilises. (Please also check the manufacturer’s recommendations.)

*Adjusting The Ph* When you measure the pH of the product, one of these 3 possibilities will be presented: – AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Scenario 1: The pH of the product is exactly in the range that you want and in the range that your preservative system has the highest efficiency. Scenario 2: The pH of the product is higher than your desired range, and you need to reduce it. Scenario 3: The pH of the product is lower than your desired range, and you need to increase it For scenario 1, it is the perfect case, but it rarely happened, and this means you need not do a single thing. For the 2 other scenarios, you will need pH modifiers, ingredients that are added to adjust the pH of the cosmetic product. They are usually used in a very small percentage and added in the final steps of the formulation process. When the pH of the product is higher than your desired range, you will need to decrease the pH: – Citric acid Citric acid is usually sold as a powder (anhydrous or hydrated) or as a solution. Blend 10% citric powder into 90% distilled water. This means that you add 1g of citric acid powder to 9g distilled water. Lactic acid (solution) Although originally a powder, is commercially available as an 80% solution (this is the max. available concentration commercially available). It is much more expensive than citric acid, and in 80% concentration, it could be quite corrosive (handle with care, avoid contact with skin). Lactic acid can generally be purchased at an 80% strength, and you can then dilute it further with distilled water to make 40%, 25% or 10% solutions. Lactic acid is often used for its additional moisturizing benefits. **Do not use vinegar, lemon juice or household cleaners to reduce the pH When the pH of the product is lower than your desired range, you will need to increase the pH: – Sodium bicarbonate (Baking soda) – readily available and use Blend 10% Sodium bicarbonate into 90% distilled water. This means that you add 1g of pH modifier to 9g distilled water. Gentle heating may help with dispersion. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Blend 10% Sodium hydroxide into 90% distilled water. This means that you add 1g of sodium hydroxide to 9g distilled water. ALWAYS add sodium hydroxide to the water not the other way around, or it will create strong fumes. L-Arginine Powder to be added to the water phase. L-Arginine is an essential or semi-essential amino acid necessary for protein synthesis. When you dilute it in water (10%), it has a pH between 10.5-12, and this is a suitable base to increase the pH of your cosmetic products as it is quite easy (and safe) to work with. Compared to NaOH and baking soda, using L-Arginine is the mildest way to increase the pH of your products.

For *300g* of Body Lotion, your *Water content calculation* will be:

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE Remember, you don't just go to the market to say ... " *I want to buy Emulsifier* " because there are different types of Emulsifiers but the most common type of Emulsifier found in the Nigerian beauty market is *E- wax* So you can say *I want to buy E-wax* ... that's the most common type in the Nigerian beauty market. *Next Ingredient Is Co emulsifier*. Apart from the fact that *Co emulsifier* helps to increase the thickness of your product, *Co emulsifier* also helps make your *lotion have a fine-glossy finish* *Co emulsifier*? According to this template, it is not a must to include co-emulsifier in your *lotion* but I usually advise you put at least *0.5 to 1%* So, I decided to use *1 %* of Co emulsifier(e.g. Cetyl Alcohol) Co emulsifier = (*1* /100) X 300 = *3g* *Next ingredient to calculate is:Emollients* i *Butter* (e.g. Shea Butter) = (6/100) X 300 = 18g ii *Carrier oils* = (*11* /100) x 300 = *33g* Your choice of carrier oils depend on what you want your lotion to achieve *Next ingredient is *Essential oils* = (*1* /100) X *300* = *3g* *Preservative* = (*1* /100) X *300* = *3g* Basically, your choice of *butters, carrier oils, essential oils and active ingredients* are influenced by what exactly you want your lotion/ cream or moisturizer to achieve. *Next ingredient is Antioxidant* (e.g. Vitamin E oil) = (*1* /100) X *300* = *3g* So here's the summary of all the percentage calculation of each *basic ingredient* *used to make our 300g body lotion*:

29. *THE CONCEPT OF SKIN BRIGHTENING, LIGHTENING & WHITENING* 

Skin Glow Or Brightening: is not about taking your skin to lighter or whiter shades – instead, it’s all about transforming dull, tired, and sluggish-looking skin into fresh, glowing skin by increasing radiance and restoring vibrancy to the skin.

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Skin lightening;has to do with evening out skin tone by getting rid of dark spots caused by sun damage, acne scars, age spots and skin conditions like melasma.Restoring the skin back to its ‘original,’ pre-sun or light-exposed skin color.Lightening your skin to its original, natural skin color. When people use skin lightening products, the goal is normally to lighten the skin. With consistent use, it helps the skin lighten several shades and returns the dermis to a healthier color. Most of these products are made with chemical called tyrosinase inhibitors. This active ingredient stops an enzyme in the skin from producing melanin.

Skin Whitening involves the use of stronger lightening agents on the skin to produce an intense whitening effect that is several shades lighter than your natural skin tone.

30.

*SKIN LIGHTENING/WHITENING AGENTS*

1. Kojic Acid Usually made as a by-product of malted rice – that’s used to make sake/rice wine, Kojic acid is an all-natural lightening and brightening skincare active. Kojic acid works to lighten and brighten your skin by making an enzyme necessary for melanin production unavailable i.e. the pigment which colors your skin.

2. Vitamin C Vitamin C is a much loved, multi-tasking skincare ingredient. Just look at this list of activities; 

Antioxidant

Collagen builder

Anti-aging active

Lightens skin

Skin brightening

Builds skin’s strength

Helps shield skin against pollution

Bottom line – vitamin C is a necessary skincare antioxidant. Since your skin naturally makes vitamin C it is therefore one of the safest skincare actives you could use. AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

3. Alpha-Arbutin Another natural skin lightening active. Alpha-arbutin’s made by Mother Nature and found in the leaves of the bearberry plant. Used in skincare at a 1 to 2% concentration alpha-arbutin can rival even the most effective skin brighteners. Similarly, to Kojic acid, alpha-arbutin works by inhibiting skin’s tyrosinase enzymes.

4. Niacinamide Enter the world of skincare and you won’t travel far before hearing about the wondrous activity of niacinamide. Also known as pro-vitamin B3, niacinamide is an antioxidant, sebum (oil) balancer, acne fighter, anti-inflammatory, ceramide booster and… a very effective skin lightening active. Niacinamide works even more effectively when paired with N-acetyl glucosamine.

5. Glutathione A potent antioxidant that can even be taken as a food supplement. Glutathione makes a fantastic partner to well-studied skin lightening ingredients like Kojic acid. While studies show glutathione is safe for use on skin, not so much is known about how well or how quickly glutathione can lighten skin. For this reason, be sure your choice of lightening skincare includes glutathione accompanied by one of the other skin lightening ingredients on this list.

6. Azelaic Acid Don’t let acid scare you, azelaic acid is the same pH level as your skin, 5.5pH which is also slightly acidic. Azelaic acid is most commonly known for its abilities to help calm rosacea – a chronic redness accompanied by irritation and scaling. However, azelaic acid is also an effective skin lightening ingredient. Used in skincare azelaic acid will not only help even your skin tone, it will also help keep your skin clear.

7. Liquorice Extract As a mixture of actives, liquorice extract contains many ingredients with skin lightening benefits. Some of these work traditionally by inhibiting tyrosinase activity whereas others also

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

lighten skin but by other mechanisms. This make liquorice extract an attractive and very effective skincare ingredient for lightening and brightening.

8. Glycolic Acid Most people know glycolic acid works as a leave on exfoliant, most people don’t know glycolic acid can also help lighten skin. While many of the ingredients on this list work to inhibit melanin synthesis, glycolic acid works to lighten skin by removing melanin pigment faster. Glycolic acid skincare speeds up the natural turn-over of your skin cells aka the rate at which they exfoliate. Uneven exfoliation can cause an uneven skin tone, therefore glycolic acid can powerfully boost the results of direct acting skin lighteners like Kojic acid.

9. Linoleic Acid While you might not have heard about linoleic acid, you’ll have surely heard about natural plant oils which contain linoleic acid – rosehip oil, grapeseed oil and evening primrose oil. Linoleic acid can help speed up your skin cell turnover in the same way as glycolic acid with recent studies suggesting linoleic acid can also directly suppress melanin production. Another natural skincare active with noteworthy lightening and brightening abilities.

10. Kojic Dipalmitate Kojic Dipalmitate is an ester of Kojic acid offering superior stability. Kojic acid itself can be prone to instability with color changes occurring over time whereas Kojic dipalmitate retains its stability for longer. It is used as a skin whitening ingredient and to reduce the appearance of age spots.

11. Paper Mulberry Mulberry extract is an up and coming skin lightening active. Sources boast mulberry extract may even have better efficacy than the very controversial Hydroquinone. Named a superoxide scavenger, paper mulberry extract can also help protect skin against damaging free radicals i.e. pollution induced age spots

*ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS*

Alpha-Hydroxy Acids are water-soluble acids derived from fruits and plants. They’re considered a chemical exfoliant, which means that they use chemicals aka acids or enzymes to buff away dead skin cells. AHAs cause controlled trauma to the skin, leading to quicker cell turnover. That process will result in less hyperpigmentation and more even-toned skin AHAs offer almost instant gratification and they're suitable for someone who wants to "refresh" their skin. However, as with most skincare ingredients and especially exfoliants, AHAs have their downsides, including possible sun sensitivity, peeling and itching. Overall, this means that you'll need to use Sunscreen no matter the season or whether you're insideand working or Going out.

AZELAIC ACID

Those with redness often fear harsh skin care ingredients like acids. There’s no need to be scared of azelaic acid. Imahiyerobo-Ip says that the acid can benefit those with redness, rosacea and acne. It’s also suitable for treating hyperpigmentation and melasma. 

CITRIC ACID

Citric acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that is derived from citrus fruits, hence the name. It’s an antioxidant-rich acid that is good for preventing premature aging. Imahiyerobo-Ip adds that it’s also suitable for acne-prone or sun-damaged skin because it exfoliates to brighten brown spots. Concerned about it being harsh? Verallo-Rowell says that it’s mild and less acidic than the other AHAs. 

FERULIC ACID

Ferulic acid is an antioxidant that helps fight free radicals and the signs of aging. It’s typically used in combination with other actives like ascorbic acid, vitamin C or vitamin E. Those with sensitive skin should use it with caution. Ferulic acid is found in the seeds of oranges and apples and in the cell walls of plants like apples and oranges. When purchasing a product with the ingredient, try to see how much processing it has been through as too much can make the acid less effective.

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE 

GLYCOLIC ACID

Glycolic acid is a versatile AHA that can help improve the appearance of spots, scars and wrinkles while making skin more radiant. Plus, it will shrink pores. Imahiyerobo-Ip says that it’s one of the best acids for aging skin. 

HYALURONIC ACID

Most people have probably heard of hyaluronic acid used in moisturizers. That’s because it’s a superb water-retaining hydrater, according to Verallo-Rowell. It’s ideal for aging skin as it improves the appearance of fine lines and softens and plumps skin. Imahiyerobo-Ip suggests looking for products that contain hyaluronic acid and vitamin C to help the product penetrate skin. 

LACTIC ACID

Lactic acid is a key ingredient to remember for sensitive skin types. The acid exfoliates and softens fine lines and wrinkles, but in a less irritating way than other acids says Imahiyerobo-Ip. 

MANDELIC ACID

Mandelic acid is ideal for brightening and lightening skin. According to Verallo-Rowell, the acid comes from grapes and has a fairly high acidity, but it’s less irritating than glycolic acid. It’s a common peel ingredient, so look for it in at-home and professional peels. 

OLEIC ACID

Those with dry skin will want oleic acid on their radar. It’s a moisturizing essential fatty acid that is found in animal and vegetable sources, such as olive oil. The acid has antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties that can help psoriasis, eczema and even seborrheic dermatitis (excessive scalp dandruff), according to Imahiyerobo-Ip.

32.

BETA HYDROXY ACIDS

Beta hydroxy acid works mainly as an exfoliant. It causes the cells of the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin) to become "unglued," allowing the dead skin cells to slough off, making room for the regrowth of new skin. Beta hydroxy acid is reported to improve wrinkling, roughness, and mottled pigmentation of photodamaged skin after at least six months of daily application. Beta hydroxy acid that's found in skincare products works best in a concentration of 1% to 2% and at a pH of 3 to 4 AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

SALICYLIC ACID

Even those new to acids will probably have heard of salicylic acid. It’s a Beta hydroxy acid and the hero acid for those with acne-prone skin because it penetrates pores to reduce sebum. What’s more, it can remove discoloration and improve skin tone over time and can also be effective for treating rosacea. Verallo-Rowell points out that it’s the only beta hydroxy acid (BHA) and it’s not for those who are pregnant, breastfeeding or allergic to aspirin. Those with darker complexions should also watch out because it can sometimes cause irregular lightening or darkening of skin.

33.

ANTI OXIDANTS

Antioxidants are substances that help protect the skin’s surface from oxidative damage caused by free radicals and environmental aggressors like UV and pollution. Antioxidants are often found in skin care product formulas because of their powerful anti-aging benefits.

VITAMIN C

A favorite among dermatologists, vitamin C is one of the most studied antioxidants available on the market. Other than being a free radical scavenger, vitamin C has other skin benefits, like boosting collagen production and fading dark spots. But beware, vitamin C is inherently unstable and can lose its potency when exposed to light or air.

RETINOL (VITAMIN A)

If there’s one anti-aging ingredient that’s been proven time and time again to help turn back the clock on aging skin, it’s retinol. A derivative of vitamin A, this ingredient is particularly effective due to its small molecular structure, giving it the ability to penetrate deep enough into the skin that it can effectively stimulate collagen production and accelerate cell renewal and repair, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles and improving skin tone in the process.

VITAMIN E

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

Vitamin E is an important vitamin required for the proper function of many organs in the body, including the skin. Aside from being a powerful antioxidant, vitamin E is widely recognized for its ability to accelerate the skin’s healing process. No wonder it is often found in moisturizers, creams and lotions formulated to treat dry skin as well as products designed to reduce stretch marks.

COENZYMEQ10

Ever wondered how you used to pull an all-nighter with no hint of fatigue on your skin the next day? Well, thanks to the abundant supply of coenzymeQ10 or coQ10 in your body, those late nights didn’t take a toll on your skin—back then that is. But as we age, the presence of coenzymeQ10, also known as ubiquinone, in our body slowly diminishes, making us more susceptible to wrinkles and photo-aging.

NIACINAMIDE (VITAMIN B3)

A well-functioning epidermis is essential to protect us from free radicals. The more our epidermal lipid barrier is stabilized, the more it can fully absorb the vitamins and nutrients from our skin care products and achieve optimal results. However, as we age, our skin’s ability to heal and retain moisture weakens, leaving us prone to wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and dullness.

GLUTATHIONE

Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that aids in cell repair and protection of vital organs like liver, kidney, brain and the skin. One of its wide-known side effects is its antimelanogenic property that causes skin whitening. This “mother of all antioxidants” helps detoxify the skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles, giving you smoother, suppler skin. Research also shows that when taken orally, glutathione can help combat liver disease.

RESVERATROL

A chemical compound found mostly in the skins of fruits like grapes and berries, peanuts, tea and red wine, resveratrol serves as the plant’s defensive armor. It’s an antimicrobial substance

*THE CONCEPT OF PRESERVATIVES*

*THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVATIVES ARE TO PROTECT YOU* from bacteria, fungus, and yeast. Without a preservative, you run the risk of introducing all sorts of nasty infections to your body.In short, preservatives are a MUST for water-containing products because they are prone to contamination as water provides the ideal conditions for bacterial and fungal growth. Anhydrous products such as body butters (contains no water) are prone to oxidation and usually require an antioxidant, i.e. Vitamin E.Formulations contain water, clay, honey, and fruits, are most likely to spoil very quickly and thus require a strong preservative system to ensure their stability and safety over their desired shelf life. Applying 1-2% preservative helps to prevent contamination, using a preservative is a necessity. A preservative system should be broad spectrum, meaning that it should protect your formula from the microbial growth of both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, yeast and mould. Preservatives are needed in any product that has water in it to prevent bacteria and mould from growing in it. Many people like their products and soaps to be all-natural, but sometimes there just isn’t a way to make everything 100% natural.

*Some Of The Preservatives Are:-*   

Germaben – Germaben is a great preservative to use when you are making lotions, as it helps to keep them nice and creamy. Optiphen – Optiphen is a paraben and formaldehyde-free preservative. It is best to use in your oil-based recipes like shampoos, conditioners, and some lotions. Optiphen ND– Optiphen ND is a water-soluble, broad spectrum preservative. This preservative works best in surfactant based systems, shampoos, conditioners, gels, creams, and lotions. Phenonip – Phenonip is a liquid preservative that helps to suppress the full range of microbial growth in your cremes, lotions, salt scrubs, dusting powders and liquid soap bases. When making products at a higher temperature, this is going to be the preservative you are going to want to use. Optiphen Plus – Optiphen Plus is a water-soluble, paraben- and formaldehyde-free preservative. You can use Optiphen Plus in any recipe you are using water in and it helps to protect against bacteria, mold growth and even yeast!

If they are water soluble, first pre mix in *lukewarm* water or ethanol before mixing in to the base cream. If they are oil soluble (e.g Kojic Dip), first pre-mix with lukewarm oil before mixing in to the base cream. This step is done at a temperature below or around 40 degrees Celsius, so as to keep the potency of your *Active or High Performance Ingredients* AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

9. Package your cream or lotion into a *sanitized airtight* container (*tube, pump bottle or jar*). If you can't make your base cream, there are other ready lotions you can use as base cream. Namely: Abonne lotion, Yuri white lotion, Over white lotion, Make me white lotion, Papaya whitening lotion, Or better still get organic base creams from organic sellers. They have for all types of cream you may need be it *Normal Base Cream, Lightening Base Cream and Whitening Base Cream*

*BODY BUTTERS*

Body butters are skincare moisturizers that have *higher concentration of butters such as shea butter, cocoa butter or mango butter and also contains other vegetable based oils too* Body Butter is most notable for being thicker than body lotions and moisturizers which is why you’re more likely to find body butters in a jar than a bottle so you can easily scoop out your desired amount of body cream. Body butters are also known to be more effective at nourishing and rejuvenating dry skin or problem patches, such as elbows and knees. Shea butter and organic coconut oil are two ingredients known for their hydrating and moisturizing properties making them a must-have component in any body butter. Body butters are basically made up of *oil soluble* ingredients such as:    

*Butters*: 70% *Carrier oils* : 28% *Essential oils* : 1% *Antioxidant*: 1%

38.

*STEPS FOR MAKING BODY BUTTER*

1. Combine Butters and Carrier oils and melt in a double boiler (or using water bathe method).

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

This may damage the property of the butters and oils. Also, to avoid *grainy body butters*, it is important not to *over heat*. You can check with your thermometer, for most butters, heating up to 60 degrees may be too much. 2. After, allow your pre melted butter and oil to cool down to about 35 degrees Celsius, then add *essential oil and antioxidant*. At this point, you may start whipping with an *electric whisk*. Whip for about *10 to 15 minutes* 3. Allow the mixture to cool for about 10 minutes until it starts to solidify; you may put in fridge again to speed up cooling. 4. After it solidifies (a bit) due to cooling in fridge, whip with an electric whisk again. If it gets *too soft or turn liquid* during whipping, cool down some more in fridge. If you're putting in fridge, 2 to 3mins is ok to avoid been too solid 5. Pack into desired packaging. Jars are better for ease of dispense

*Cool down phase (30 degrees Fahrenheit)* Fragrance or Essential Oils 30g You may be confused as to what we mean by heated water phase and cool water phase. Don’t panic because I will explain in beginner Language. Cold process soap making involves the mixing of lye and oils at the same temperature of Say 90 to 110 degree Fahrenheit. It means you have to get your Lye water and oil mixture to the said temperature. They can be 10 degree Fahrenheit different from each other. It’s allowed, as long as it doesn’t exceed this. This is when they can now be combined. Now lye is a very corrosive material. You have to be extremely careful when handling lye. You pour it into the water and not the other way round and you need to do this while facing away because it produces fumes which you should not breathe in. Also mix your lye and water in a stainless material because lye can cause other materials to break.

*Procedure* 1. Pour the water in a stainless bowl. 2. Pour your lye slowly into water (Never the other way round. This is corrosive and can burn skin. Best to be done outside). Stir carefully and allow to cool. 3. Combine and Heat your oils in a microwave or any low heat to about 120 degree fah. 4. Your lye solution too will be about 120 degrees Fah(Use a thermometer to Check). 5. Allow both of them to cool to about 100 Fah 6. Please if you do not have a thermometer, you can also use the hotness from your lye and water solution to melt your oils, instead of heating the oils. Skip step 7 and move to 8 if you're using this method. AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

7. Pour the oil in a bigger bowl and slowly add your lye solution. 8. Stir it for 10mins non-stop. 9. After 10mins, use a stick blender to mix it's thickness. 10. When it has thickened to an extent, add essential oils or fragrance. Then pour into your desired soap mold.11. Cover this soap mold with a plastic wrap, then towel. 12. After 24hrs check your soap. 13. If it's still soft, wait for another 12 hours. 14. When it's hard, remove from the mold and place them on a board or flat surface. 15. Allow the soap to cure for another 4weeks before using or selling.

*Curing is allowing your soap stay for 4 weeks before using. The longer a soap is left to cure the harder the bar becomes and hence the Longer the soap will last. You will store the soap base above and use it to create other soap recipes like the ones below.*

2 stainless steel pot or Crock pot (No aluminum) Spatula Bowl Measuring cups Scale

*Procedure* 1. Pour the potassium hydroxide into the water in a bowl and stir gently. -Set aside to cool down. 2. Pour your oil or oils into a crock pot. If you don't have a Crock-Pot, use a normal pot but not aluminum. Allow the oils heat up in the pot on very low heat. 3. Gently pour the potassium hydroxide solution into the oils. Heat helps to emulsify the caustic solution with oils, so you don't need to let your solution cool down. 4. As soon as the oils are all melted and the solution turns clear, you can mix. 5. Stick blend till you get a pap-like thickness consistency. Keep your pot on high heat after blending well. Heat helps, but do not burn your soap. 6. Come back after 10mins and stick blend again. It would have gotten the pap-like consistency by now. But if you're still not there, leave for 10minutes and come back again to check. You'll get there eventually. Don't stress, because it will all come together. It takes time sometimes. 7. Cover the pot and let it cook for about 30minutes. Don't stir, the soap will get puffy and rise a bit. Some of it will turn translucent.

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

AKWANWA BOTANICS FULL SKINCARE COURSE

8. After 30mins stir very well. Let it cook for another hour or so until most of the soap has turned translucent. This helps to not sit, because then you can see which soap has turned translucent and which hasn't. 9. Boil the cool down phase water in another pot and then Spoon your paste (the lye solution and oil mixture that you were cooking) into your boiling water. 10. Turn off the heat and cover it to dilute. It will take several hours for that. You can stir it occasionally. It takes time for the liquid soap paste to absorb all of the water. Once it's diluted you can add your fragrance or essential oils.

SKIN TAG REMEDY Skin tags are medically known as acrochordon, it is a skin growth caused by running or friction. They appear at on the face, neck, armpits, chest and around the groins. They are harmless most cases but sometimes they need to be checked by a doctor because they makes you feel unpleasant. Here is a simple ingredient you can find in your kitchen to actually treat your skin tags:

 

2tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar Cotton ball

Clean the affected area with water and soap, pat dry with a tower and soak the cotton ball in the Apple Cider Vinegar and squeeze and apply the vinegar on the affected area. Repeat this 23 times a day.

Apple Cider Vinegar is acidic and it might cause burning sensation all you need to do is to dilute it with few drops of water before you apply it. After a while in most cases after a week the skin tag will lighten and fall off.

2. Rub on aloe vera. You can either snip off a piece of an aloe vera plant or squeeze it to get the gel or you can purchase a bottle of aloe vera gel at a store. Get a cotton swab and dip it in the gel. Wipe it on your tag as often as you like.

This method relies on the natural curative properties of aloe vera and its effectiveness is hit or miss
