INTRODUCTION Let start by knowing some meaning of the short-forms/words: Tbs means tablespoon, which is used for measurement. Tsp means teaspoon also used in measuring. Shelf life means period in which your products can survive i.e. expired date. SPF means sun protecting factor, which is used to protect ourselves from the harmful ultra-violet rays. Preservative: This is added to cream to prolong its life shelf. Double boiler: This is a set of two fitted saucepans or pots that are stacked together with space between them. The bottom saucepan is filled with water, and then the second saucepan is stacked on top. The steam from the bottom pot rises and heats the upper pot. In other words, place a wide pot on fire with water and put a thick glass bowl in it to melt your products. This means you are not heating or melting your products directly from stove or gas but from the pot. Measurements cups: They comes in different sizes and used for measuring. Mixer: This comes in different forms e.g. hand mixer, standing mixer or use a wooden spoon. INGREDIENTS USED IN CREAMS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Base oils and herbal infused oils – Base oils are usually vegetable oils, pressed from nuts, seeds, kernels and other fatty parts of fruits and vegetables. Things to be aware of when choosing base oils include the consistency & smell. Some oils are rich and moisturizing and good for drier skins like avocado, hemp, macadamia, argan and rosehip. Often you would only use these in a smaller percentage along with lighter oil like almond or apricot. Oils like rosehip, hemp and macadamia can have quite a strong aroma, especially if they’re high quality and unrefined so factor this into your recipe and don’t use too much. Lighter oils that are good for 2

oiler skins include hazelnut, grape seed and jojoba. Sensitive skins respond well to apricot oil. As this topic is something of a vast one, I will dedicate a post to exploring some different base oils in further detail soon. Be aware that some wonderfully nutritious skin oils like borage and evening primrose have a very short shelf life, around 6 months, so ensure you get them from a good supplier and store them in the fridge. Never buy oils that smell rancid and be aware of using nut oils on those with allergies. Herbal infused oils are simply vegetable oils infused with herbs. Solid oils and butters – These include cacao butter, coconut oil, avocado butter, mango butter and Shea butter and they are rich and moisturizing as well as adding body to a cream. For a lighter effect which sinks in to the skin easily use coconut, or for a rich, nourishing hand cream opt for Shea. Cacao is nice in both body and face creams and, if you get it food grade, it lends a delicious chocolaty aroma to your finished product. Somewhere between liquid oil and beeswax or plant waxes in consistency, fats will partly absorb into the skin but will leave something of a protective film behind. Beeswax and plant waxes – These thicken and add body to creams and also help a little with emulsification. They are not well absorbed into the skin creating a protective barrier that helps it maintain its own moisture and keeps it hydrated, especially during these wintery months with their high winds. Waters – These include spring water, floral waters, herbal teas and aloe vera. You can vary them endlessly to suit your purpose. If you are making a plain base cream try using just spring water or if it’s a luxury face cream then use Rose floral water. If you want a soothing cream with anti-inflammatory properties then try a strong tea of chamomile and calendula Vegetable Glycerin – Glycerin is a sweet, syrupy, clear liquid that helps draw moisture to the surface of the skin. In very dry climates it can apparently take the moisture from deeper layers of skin so best to avoid using it, but if you live in the damp UK, it can be a nice addition and improve the consistency of your creams. Tinctures – A small proportion of a suitable herbal tincture will add therapeutic value as well as helping to preserve your cream. Try calendula in a soothing

3

cream, comfrey in a bruise healing cream or yarrow in an anti-inflammatory cream. Do beware though that alcohol can irritate sensitive skins. Essential Oils – The volatile oil content of the plant is distilled, pressed or extracted with solvents leaving a highly concentrated and powerfully aromatic liquid that can be used for strong therapeutic benefits or simply to make the product smell delicious. Emulsifiers – These help the water and oil parts of a cream to mix and leave a homogenous finish. Common ones include emulsifying wax, vegetal and VE/MF emulsifiers all derived from vegetable sources, albeit after some intense processing! Another commonly used and readily available emulsifier is borax Vitamins and minerals – These can be added to creams and usually come as a powder or in liquid form. Vitamins A, C and E are the ones most commonly used as they are good anti-oxidants and can help prevent oils going rancid. Sometimes minerals like zinc are added to sun creams to create a barrier against the sun’s rays. Natural preservatives – These include rosemary extract and grape seed extract. Both are powerful anti-oxidants that can increase the shelf life of creams. They have some anti-bacterial action but most agree it is not powerful enough for products sold commercially. Grapefruit seed extract is more powerfully antimicrobial but there is much evidence out there that suggests it is harmful so I suggest reading the research yourself before using it. Synthetic preservatives – Creams are much like food. If you plan to use them quickly (how quickly will depend on the recipe) and keep them cool then you have no need to go down this route but if you are planning to keep them for longer than a few weeks or if you wish to sell them you will need to add a synthetic preservative which will protect against moulds, yeasts, bacteria etc. Though there is conflicting evidence as to whether all types of parabens are carcinogenic, I personally avoid them altogether. Some of the safest ones seem to be Preservative 12 and Preservative Eco, both sold by Aromatic. I often avoid using these where possible but for creams with high water content they are always necessary.

WHAT ARE CARRIER OILS? Carrier oils are naturally derived from vegetarian sources and have a neutral smell. They aren’t volatile like essential oils, which makes them an excellent medium for dilution and application. How are carrier oils used? Essential oils are volatile, which means they evaporate rapidly and contain the natural smell and characteristics of the plant. This can make them too strong to apply undiluted. Carrier oils do not evaporate or have a strong aroma, making them the perfect pair for diluting especially strong essential oils, reducing the concentration of the essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities. When you dilute an essential oil with carrier oil, you can also control its concentration before applying. Like other substances that are high in fat, carrier oils have a limited shelf life, meaning that eventually they can go bad. Depending on the type, oils with a short shelf life should typically be used within six months, while oils with a longer shelf life may stay good for up to a year. It’s important to store oils in their original airtight containers in a cool, dark place, such as the pantry, to maximize shelf life. Carrier oils can vary widely in their consistency, absorption, aroma, shelf life, and other characteristics. Carrier oils can be blended to change or combine their properties, so you can mix and match until you find the blend that’s just right for you! Get to know some of the more popular carrier oils! SKIN TYPES AND CARE Here's what you need to know about what skin type you have and how to take better care of your skin. Normal skin type If you have a normal skin type, you're lucky to have skin that has a good balance and the right amount of water and lipids. Normal skin has: No or few imperfections No severe sensitivity Barely visible pores A radiant complexion Combination skin type 7

A combination skin type can be dry or normal in some areas, and oily in others, such as the T-zone. The T- zone is the nose, forehead, and chin area. A common skin type, combination skin may benefit from slightly different types of skin care in different areas. Combination skin can produce: Overly dilated pores Blackheads Shiny skin This type of skin results from genetic or hormonal factors that cause an imbalance in how much and where lipids are produced. It can also vary, depending on the weather. Dry skin type Dry skin can produce: Almost invisible pores Dull, rough complexion Red patches Less elasticity More visible lines When exposed to drying factors, skin can flake, crack, peel or become itchy, irritated or inflamed. If your skin is very dry, it can become rough and scaly, especially on the backs of your hands, arms, and legs. Dry skin may be caused or worsened by: Genetics Ageing or changes in hormones Weather such as wind, sun, or cold or ultraviolet (UV) radiation Indoor heating Long hot baths and showers Ingredients in soaps, cosmetics or cleaning agents Medications Here are some tips for taking better care of dry skin: Take shorter showers and baths, no more than once daily. Use mild, gentle soaps or cleansers. Avoid deodorant soaps. Don't scrub while bathing or drying.

8

Apply a rich moisturizer right after bathing. Ointments and creams may work better than lotions for dry skin. Re-apply as needed throughout the day. Use a humidifier and don't let indoor temperatures get too hot. Buy natural cleaning products. Wear gloves when using cleaning agents, solvents or household detergents. Oily skin type Oily skin is more common in youth. It occurs when glands in the skin secrete too much oil (lipids). Oily skin can produce: Enlarged pores Dull or shiny, thick complexion Blackheads, spots or other blemishes Oiliness can change, depending upon the time of year or the weather. Oily skin can be caused or worsened by: Puberty or other hormonal imbalances Stress Antibiotics Exposure to heat or too much humidity Here are some tips for taking better care of oily skin: Wash your skin no more than twice a day and after you perspire heavily. Use a gentle cleanser and don't scrub. Don't pick, pop or squeeze spots. This prolongs healing time. Use products labeled as 'noncomedogenic'. They don't tend to clog pores. Sensitive skin type If your skin is sensitive, it's helpful to find out why so you can stay away from things that make it react. You may have sensitive skin for a variety of reasons, but often in response to particular skin care products. Sensitive skin can show up as: Redness Itching Burning Dryness These are a few of the most common reasons for sensitive skin: 9

Acne is from oil in the skin that clogs pores and allows for the overgrowth of skin bacteria. Treatment may include: Tea tree oil Antibiotics Benzoyl peroxide Salicylic acid Retinoids HOT CHOCOLATE BODY BUTTER 1/2 cup of organic cocoa butter 1/2 cup organic mango or Shea butter. You can also substitute another 1/2 cup cocoa butter. , 1/2 cup coconut oil 1/2 cup of jojoba or a mild olive oil. The inside bowl needs to be able to hold at least 4-5 cups of liquid. Using a double boiler or a pot of boiling water with a smaller pot fitted inside, melt cocoa butter and mango butter over a low simmer. Add coconut oil and melt until completely liquid. Remove cocoa butter/coconut oil mixture from heat. Measure 5 teaspoons of cocoa powder into a small bowl and gradually add several tablespoons of jojoba/almond/olive oil. Mix thoroughly and then add to cocoa butter/coconut oil mixture along with remaining jojoba/almond/olive oil. Place mixture in chilled bowl (which should still be resting above the ice bowl) and allow to cool for 10 minutes. Remove mixture from ice bath and whip until stiff peaks form. If after a few minutes it does not seem to be thickening return the bowl to the ice bath and whip there. Store in an airtight jar keep out of direct sunlight (which promotes oxidation). 10

SOAP SECTION INTRODUCTION Black soap hails from West Africa and is quite popular due to its powerful effects on the skin. It is known by many names, including "ose dudu," a name used by the 21

Yoruba people of western Nigeria that literally means "black soap." The color of black soap can range from light brown to deep black, depending on the method of production. Black soap contains ingredients that are beneficial for the skin. HOW BLACK SOAP IS MADE FROM SCRATCH Black soap is generally made from locally harvested African plants such as plantain, cocoa pods, palm tree leaves and shea tree bark. The ingredients are sun-dried and roasted, which is how it gets its deep color. Water and oils such as coconut, palm and shea butter are then added. The soap is then left to sit and “cure.” BLACK SOAP COMMON INGREDIENTS INCLUDE:PALM OIL Palm oil is an ingredient in black soap that is rich in antioxidants. It contains tocopherols and tocotrienol, both forms of vitamin E, which is used in the treatment of acne and eczema. Palm oil also contains carotene. Carotene, tocopherols and tocotrienol all help reduce cell damage caused by toxic substances and environmental pollution. PALM KERNEL OIL Palm kernel oil is another ingredient in black soap and is extracted from the fruit seeds of the African palm tree. It is used to increase the lather and hardness of soap and is high in lauric acid, which helps to destroy organisms like fungus, bacteria and viruses. Palm kernel oil is similar in nature and properties to coconut oil. COCOA BUTTER Black soap also contains cocoa butter, a natural fat extracted from the cacao bean. Cocoa butter is a very good moisturizer and readily absorbed by the skin. It is often recommended for the treatment of eczema and dermatitis.

22

SHEA BUTTER Shea butter, also known as karite butter because it is made from the nuts of the karite tree, is another ingredient in black soap. Shea butter is used to heal burns, scars, dermatitis, psoriasis and sores, as well as dandruff and stretch marks. It can diminish wrinkles by moisturizing the skin while increasing circulation and promoting cell renewal. It contains cinnamic acid, which helps to protect the skin from harmful UV rays. STEP BY STEP IN MAKING ORGANIC BLACK SOAP The active ingredients of African Black soap come from the ash of local plants including: Cocoa pods Palm kernels Shea bark Palm leaves Coconut Plantain leaves Potash produced from plantain leaves Virgin olive oil Naturally-occurring glycerin The plantain skin and potash are excellent sources of Vitamin A and E, while glycerin helps the skin retain moisture throughout the day. Palm kernel oil has lubricating properties, which makes it suitable as a moisturizer. Palm oil and shea butter also serve as the base oils. All the ingredients combined give the soap its light brown to black color. Traditional African black soap has a rough, earthy texture and smell. Despite the ingredients, the soap is not oily. The grainy texture helps exfoliate dead skin cells off your skin to reveal healthier and smoother skin. APPARATUS NEEDED INCLUDE Mortar and pestle Big bowl 23

Pot Small bowl or bucket Hand glove Double boiler USES FOR AFRICAN BLACK SOAP Africans use black soap for a number of reasons. Africans have used it to clear acne, oily skin, as well as to maintain the natural moisture and elasticity of the skin. Modern African women also use this soap to remove make up. Since traditional black soap contains natural ingredients without any perfumes, it is suitable for use for women who have sensitive skin. African black soap can also be used to clean hair. You simply dissolve the soap in water in order to transfer the liquid soap into a pump dispenser. The emollient properties of the ingredients are suitable for dry hair. STEPS FOR MAKING AFRICAN BLACK SOAP The procedure for making African black soap is actually very easy. You simply need to gather all the ingredients together including coconut husks for coconut palm oil, as well as the plantain skin, cocoa pods, and other ingredients. The first step is gathering the ingredients. You will need Coconut husks Plantain skins Shea bark Cocoa pods Hand press Bowl or any other container Strainer Double broiler Molds Lighter

Create the base oil by extracting oil from coconut husks using the palm press. You can also extract oil from the shea tree bark using the press. If you can find bottled natural palm oil or shea butter extracts, you can use these as substitutes. It is important to remember that your oil should not be more than half the capacity of the broiler. Burn the plantain skins and cocoa pods together. Collect the ashes and place them into a bowl. Add distilled water while continuously stirring the mixture. Add ashes and water until you reach your desired consistency. Heat the oil in the broiler until it reaches a liquid and smooth consistency. Add the ash mixture and continue stirring until the entire mixture turns into a deep dark brown. Keep the burner in low heat and continue stirring. If you want to add a little bit of fragrance to the mix, you can add one or two drops of lavender oil. You can also add dried plant parts to add to the scent and texture. Aside from adding scent, this is also a great way to personalize your bars of African black soap. You will see films of the liquid soap forming on the sides of the broiler. Scoop them up and transfer them into molds. Pack the soaps into the molds and leave it to harden in the molds for up to 2 weeks. HOW TO MAKE ALMOND OIL AT HOME Reasons Why Almond Oil Is Good For Your Skin #1 Promotes Flawless Skin #2 Deep Cleanses Skin & Prevents Acne #3 Almond Oil is good for Dark Circles #4 Almond Oil also Removes Tan #5 Relieves Psoriasis and Eczema #6 Treats Skin Rashes #7 Reduces Signs of Ageing FOR MAKING ALMOND OIL You will need: ⚪ A blender ⚪ Two cups of raw almonds ⚪ 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil

40

Instructions: Step 1. Put the almonds in a blender. For best results use fresh dry nuts and leave the skins on. Step 2. Start blending the almonds at slow speed. Gradually increase the speed once they are thoroughly crushed. Pause every now and again to scrape the almonds off the inside of the blender. Step 3. Once the crushed almonds start to gather up into a ball, add some olive oil and continue blending. If you think that the paste is still too thick, add the rest of the olive oil. Step 4. After the blending is complete, and the mixture is of the right consistency, get it out of the blender and put it in a plastic container or a glass jar. Step 5. Leave the container with the almond mixture to sit for two weeks at room temperature. During this time, the actual almond oil will separate from the rest of the mixture. Step 6. Take a strainer or a piece of gauzy fabric and drain the oil through it into another container. You should leave it for some time to get all the oil out. Step 7. Your homemade almond oil is ready to use! You can use it to moisturize your skin or for hair care purposes. The leftovers are actually edible, so you don’t have to throw them away. HOW TO MAKE COCONUT OIL AT HOME 1.Remove your coconut flesh from the shell 41

2. Shred/Grate into small pieces with a food processor/knife/grater 3. Blend into paste as you would for coconut rice but use warm water 4. Squeeze out first milk in a bowl. Soak the chaff in warm water and leave for say 10 min then squeeze into your bowl. Repeat this step about 3 times or until the chaff is tasteless. Careful not to use too much water 5. Pour the liquid in a bowl and put in a freezer for saying 2hours or fridge for a few hours or overnight as you wish/time permits you. If you don't have a fridge, cover and leave overnight in a dark place. The cream will separate from the water in the morning After this time, if your bowl is transparent you'll clearly see the milk separate itself from the water(i.e the cream will float on top of the water in the bowl). 6. Scoop out your cream (not with the water) into a pot and on low heat, begin to cook and constantly stir with a spoon or spatula. After few minutes(say 3-4) the oil becomes visible while your cream begins to form tiny tiny crumbs. Keep turning until you are sure all you have in there is dried crumbs and oil. 7. Allow to cool and strain. The aroma of a homemade coconut oil cannot be over emphasized plus the crumbs too can be used to eat rice( so sweet). You might want to keep that separated water to cook your coconut rice or to mix with more coconut coz it'll still have a relatively sweet taste. Tip: dark shell coconuts tends to yield more oil. Also, make sure you use warm water HOW TO MAKE AVOCADO OIL Overall Benefits Of Avocado Oil 42

Prevents sun damage Heals skin diseases and wounds Helps hair regrowth Fights dandruff Fights inflammation Improves eye health Aids in weight loss We have two methods of extracting the oil. This is itemized below.. METHOD 1 HOW TO EXTRACT OIL FROM AVOCADO THROUGH DRYING If you want to extract oil from the avocado itself, you will need a large amount of avocados. We will start with twelve avocados. 1. Slice the avocados around the pit in half. Then separate the halves and get out the pit. Use a spoon to take out the fruit of the avocados and put them into a blender or a food processor. Pit is the seed. 2. Use the blender to make a puree out of those avocados! It has to be like a paste, with no chunks. You can also mash the avocados with your hands if you don’t have a blender. You can also use a plastic bag and a mallet. 3. When you have your thick paste, spread the avocado on a baking tray. The layer has to be even, but don’t make it too thick or thin – about 1 – 1.5 centimeters is ideal. 4. Take the tray and put it in the sun to dry. It may take up to two days. If you don’t want to wait, then put the tray in the oven and set the temperature to more than 50 degrees C. 43

Note: It may take up to 5 hours to dry the avocado in the oven. You also have to check it every hour and make sure that it is drying, not baking. If the avocado is turning black, it is time to take it out. 5. Take the avocado out of the oven. Use a flat spoon to get the avocado out of the tray and put it into a thin cotton cloth. 6. Take the cloth and pitch the corners together making a sack. Squeeze the avocado oil into a bowl. 7. Pour the avocado into a bottle. Let it sit for a few days to settle and remove any impurities. METHOD 2 HOW TO EXTRACT OIL FROM AVOCADO (HOT PROCESS) You will need twelve avocados again. Peel them the same way as we did in the previous option. Use the blender or your food processor to make the avocado puree. 1. When you’ve done all the mentioned steps, it is time to start some cooking. Take your blended puree and put it into a pot. Put the pot on a stove and turn the heat on “medium”. 2. Don’t forget to stir the avocados. You should do this every five minutes. Note: The avocado will start to boil. You will notice that there will be oils on the top of the mixture. Don’t worry and don’t try to get the oils right away. 3. Cook and stir the mixture until it’s dark green or brown. You will also notice that the water has evaporated. 4. The next steps are the same as in the previous option – take a clean, thin cloth and put the avocado mix into the cloth. Make it like a sack, put a bowl under it and squeeze the oils into the bowl. Then pour into a bottle. Your oil is ready. 44
