MOTIVATION LETTER First of all, I am very grateful to the Almighty God Allah SWT for the opportunity to explore and participate in this great event. My name is Ramlan Zuhair Pulungan, a medical student at Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sumatera Utara. I have long been aware of this program that has been running successfully over the years, thus sprouting a great interest in me to join in this opportunity. Along with this letter, I have enclosed my curriculum vitae as requested. As a medical student, I have gone through three a half years of pre-clinical years that taught us what we thought as everything we need to know to be an agile and intelligent doctor. However, this is not the case, as the best learning experience as a future physician is through interaction with the patient themselves. Personally speaking, the short time that I have been in clinical clerkship emphasizes on the importance of expanding our knowledge as much as possible for the sake of the patients and giving back to community. Indonesia is a developing country with increasing prevalence of double burden diseases. Therefore, I look forward to learning in other country, especially a developed one with different epidemiology, so that I can open my mind about what health problems the destination country is facing and how the health system works there. The reason I put so much thoughts in this event is because it is an opportunity to learn something that able to update my medical knowledge that I couldn’t gain in Indonesia. There are numerous interesting and amazing things happening around this wonderful world. Therefore, when I am finished with the exchange, I can bring home a different perspective and new insights that can hopefully be adapted and improve clinical care in Indonesia. . I want to reach out this big step to explore many different historical places, learn the unique culture, and make some good friends there. Currently I am doing my final clinical year and I believe it would be great if I can exchanges to foreign hospital. For me, the moment of sharing tears and sweats together will be the most precious moment. In the meantime, I would like to share my clinical experience in tropical country that they never experienced. This exchange of thoughts and minds will inspire us to work wiser in our future.
As an extrovert, I am very enjoyed making new friends and seeking new experiences. I enjoy observing the people around me and meeting others with understanding and respect. Making friends is one of my greatest abilities also I have passion for involving in activities abroad, Iikes joining International Conferences, seminars, trainings and exchanges. All of this simply because it help me to improve myself better and help me to understand more about the world as well as diversity. Fortunately SCOPE Exchanges hits me right in the spot for giving me the stage to spread out my friendship. My plans regarding the exchange is that I would study the field of work of the departments that I am being accepted in before I leave and I would also like to discuss the skills and objectives that I have to do with one of the doctor in my university. I will do my obligations as exchange student and also introduce my culture to other incomings in the same country as me. Thirdly, I would like to make an article or any written work of my exchange and get it published. Lastly, This IFMSA exchange experience will be taken as my elective clinical module. Therefore, when I return I would have develop new skills to become a better doctor who strives to improve the health of our community. I strongly believe that there is always room for improvements in our healthcare system, and it would be a good opportunity to learn from another country that has established an effective and patient-centered healthcare program. I believe that I am a good candidate for the IFMSA program. If I were given the opportunity to take part in the exchange, I would use the highest amount of my time and effort to contribute as much as possible to the assigned department. I am eager to meet new colleagues with similar interest as I am, to brainstorm ideas and exchange knowledge. Speaking English is not an issue for me since I learnt English since a very young age. However, this exchange would be great opportunity to practice it. I believe this exchange program would be a highly valuable opportunity for me, not only learn from physicians who are finest in their field, but also apply the experience to my future career. After all, we, doctors, are life-long learners.
Sincerely,
Ramlan Zuhair Pulungan
