WRITING PRACTICE B Model answer Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to complain about a tent I bought in one of your shops recently. I took my family camping last weekend. We set up the tent and went to sleep. Then I woke up in the middle of the night to rain dripping onto the sleeping bag from a small hole in the roof. When I took the tent back to the shop, I was told I could exchange the tent for another one. However, I would prefer to have my money back as we will not be going camping again this year. Please can you refund me as soon as possible. Yours faithfully, Vincenzo

WRITING PRACTICE B Model answer Hi Andrew, How are you? I just got back from holiday in Italy. It was good, but a few things went wrong. First, my flight was delayed by six hours. When I finally landed in Rome, the taxi driver took me to the wrong hotel. A few hours later, I managed to find the right one and checked in. The weather was lovely the next day, so I went sightseeing. I also ate some delicious food – pasta, pizza and ice cream. The day after was even hotter though and I got sunburned as I walked around the Colosseum. It was quite painful. I hope I’m not as unlucky on my next holiday. Speak soon! Sam

WRITING PRACTICE B Model answer Dear Ms Ducas, I would like to apply for the city tour guide internship. Please find attached a copy of my CV. I am a hard-working person who can pick up new skills easily. I have previously worked as a waiter in a restaurant at weekends. The knowledge and skills I developed there will be very helpful as I had to be friendly, polite and organised. I study English at university and would love the opportunity to practise it further. I also speak some Italian. Being an intern at your company would be an exciting opportunity. I look forward to your response. Yours sincerely, Juan Santiago

B Model answer Zumba: Fun fitness  My sister highly recommended coming to zumba classes with her and I thought I’d give it a try. The classes weren’t expensive. Only £30 for ten classes, which I think is great value for money. I lost a bit of weight and feel much more energetic. So they are definitely worth the money. The biggest positive was that the instructor was really helpful and gave clear instructions. She also played good music which made the class fun and the time went by quickly. On a negative note, the room it is held in is quite small and warm. The air conditioning often isn’t working so it can get too hot.

WRITING PRACTICE B Model answer The survey asked how 18–30-year-olds in Rochester liked to spend their free time compared to over-31-year-olds. According to the survey, 60% of 18–30-year-olds enjoy socialising compared to only 30% of people over 31. The survey also shows a big difference for watching TV shows, which was the older group’s favourite free time activity with 40% of those questioned choosing this. This was a big contrast with the younger group, of which only 5% chose watching TV. For people over 31, working out was the least popular activity with only 10% of them choosing it, though this was higher than 18–30-year-olds at 5%. Both groups shared a similar preference for using social media, with 30% of the younger group and 20% of the older group saying this was how they enjoyed spending their free time.

WRITING PRACTICE B Model answer Harry Potter is a series of films based on the children’s books by JK Rowling. In the third film, The Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry discovers the man believed to be involved in his parents’ murder has escaped from prison. It stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Gary Oldman as the escaped prisoner – Sirius Black. The acting is quite good, but it is the special effects that are truly magical. For me, the film isn’t as good as the book. A lot of important details are missed out. However, it is a very enjoyable film and is definitely worth seeing.

C Model answer I think you should definitely join a gym rather than buy a fitness tracker, as most gyms offer a personal trainer service. Personal trainers are fitness experts and they’ll be able to show you exercises to get fit quickly. It will also give you the motivation you need as they are very encouraging. Fitness trackers are good for monitoring how much exercise you are doing during the day, but I’m not sure how reliable they are. You can also choose from a variety of exercise classes at the gym, which are fun and can teach you new skills. I started boxing classes last year and I absolutely love it!

WRITING PRACTICE B Model answer Hi Matthew, Sorry to hear you are feeling so nervous about starting your new job. To be honest, though, it is completely normal to feel that way. First of all, try to appear confident and friendly. Make sure you introduce yourself to everyone and try to remember their names. Secondly, if I were you, I’d make sure I arrived at least ten minutes early for the first few weeks. This will give your boss the impression that you are reliable and hard-working. Finally, go to any company networking events. They are a good way to make connections and to find out more about the company. I hope that helps. Good luck! James

WRITING PRACTICE B Model answer Terrified Girl Escapes House Of Bears A young girl known as Goldilocks shares her story of escape. Goldilocks had been walking through the woods on her way home when she saw a cottage with its door wide open. ‘I thought I had better check it hadn’t been burgled,’ she told us. So she went inside. No one was there. On the table were three bowls of delicious porridge. She didn’t want the food to go to waste and she was feeling quite hungry. She tried all three bowls. The first was too hot, the second was too cold, but the third bowl was just right. After eating, she felt tired. She went upstairs and fell asleep. Suddenly she heard a growling noise and woke up to find herself surrounded by three bears. She screamed and pushed past the smallest bear. Then she ran down the stairs and out of the house as fast she could.
