Foreword
Firstly, if you’re reading this I’d like to say a huge thank you for downloading this lesson. It means a lot to me that you have shown your support by purchasing the lesson as it allows me to spend more of my time producing more guitar instruction material, which is something that I am extremely passionate about. Secondly, I’d like to say a huge thank you to my fans on my facebook fan page, who have given me their valuable feedback on the lesson content, which, as a consequence, has helped make the content that I work on even better. I personally very much enjoy interacting with my fans from all over the world and the fact that they can get involved in the material that I put out there is just so cool! Thanks to everyone for your help, it’s very much appreciated!
Welcome to the 2 n d lesson in the ‘Rick’s Quick but Slick Licks Series’! The lesson is based upon a video I put together for my Youtube channel. The video showed me warming up before doing a filming shoot in London, UK and so far has received a ton of views, likes and comments. I have had countless messages from people all over the world asking for transcriptions of some of the licks for the video, so it made complete sense to put this lesson together. The main aim of this lesson is to show you how I combine techniques to form lines. The techniques under the spotlight are: Sweep Picking, Speed Picking and Legato. I’ve had messages from lots of players asking how I use these techniques together as lots of guys seem to struggle to be able to change from one technique to the other in a natural fashion. This lesson will prove to be invaluable when it comes to combining the aforementioned techniques.
When Sweep Picking, Speed Picking and Legato are used in conjunction with one another, the results can be deadly! There are 21 killer shred licks in total, however the first 9 are preliminary licks that will give you a solid foundation for the licks, which follow. The preliminary exercises, particularly exercises 1-4 should be given special attention as they form the basis for a lot of the rapid-fire picking lines that I play. The licks are quite demanding but are extremely good fun to play, once the technique has been firmly grasped. The transcription of the licks may be ever so slightly different to the ones that appear in the video mainly because during the video solo, the licks form part of a larger line, so I had to bring each lick to some sort of logical conclusion. I have decided not to include any backing tracks with this video lesson as I think these licks are meant to be taken apart, so that you can get to the underlying technique and understand why they sound the way that they do. This may take some time. I think that the most effective way that you can incorporate them into your playing is to take small fragments of them to start with. Once you have integrated those, you can then look at extending them.
OK, I’ll let you get on and practice these sequences in peace now but please keep your eyes peeled on my website and facebook fan page for updates as I plan to add many more lessons in the ‘Rick’s Quick but Slick Lick Series’ very soon. Have fun and I’ll catch up with you all next time. Cheers! Rick Graham August 2013
