Preface About This Guide

Welcome to the Labthink PARAM® HST-H3 Heat Seal Tester. This manual contains a description of the operation and maintenance of your Heat Seal Tester.

Safety Precautions

Observe the following safety precautions when you operate or perform service on the HST-H3 Heat Seal Tester: Do not touch the area around heat sealing jaws during testing process and DO NOT replace the sealing jaws until they are cooled down. Power supply MUST be AC 220V 50/60Hz, and well grounded. DO NOT operate the instrument with other high-power electrical appliances. DO NOT place anything other than the test material in the sealing area.

This instrument SHOULD NOT be operated in intensely corrosive, combustible, explosive, or similar environment, or under intensive vibration or strong electromagnetic interference. DO NOT start the test until the desired temperature is reached and steady, or without the gas supply. Lock and DO NOT adjust the pressure knob when the desired pressure is set. The compressed gas should be clean and without any visible liquid drop or solid substances which may cause damage to the instrument.

DO NOT touch any region that labeled “Danger”

1. Introduction In accordance with ASTM F 2029, YBB 00122003, and QB/T 2358 (ZBY 28004) standards, HST-H3 Heat Seal Tester is designed to optimize the sealing temperature, pressure, and dwell time of plastic films and composite materials for packaging in order to determine the heatsealability of such substances. The sealing pressure is controlled by adjusting the pressure gauge of the gas cylinder. The micro-computer regulates the up-and-down movement of the sealing jaw in order to seal the test materials under certain temperature, pressure and dwell time, from which the appropriate sealing conditions are generated to assist industrial production.

HST-H3 Installation Environmental Requirements:     

The instrument should be kept in an environment of 23±2 ℃ and 50% RH. The power supply should be AC 220 V 50/60 Hz and well grounded. Do not operate this instrument with other high-power equipments. The working environment should be clean and free of corrosive gas and electro-magnetic interference. Place the instrument on a working table which is stable and kept away from heat source.

Installation Procedures:     

Take the instruments out of the packing box and check all the items according to packing list. Before installing the instrument, please read this instruction manual carefully to understand all requirements for installation and operations. Place the instrument on a stable worktable carefully and leave at least 0.5m space for operation. Connect all the power cables of the instrument. Remove the φ6 PU tubing (100mm) connected with the gas inlet, then connect the instrument with the gas supply with the suppliedφ6 PU tubing.

Note: Please keep the shipping carton in case the instrument is returned for repair.

Calibration Pressure: 281 KPa Zero End 000

Calibration can be achieved from this screen. Due to the complexity of the calibration 12

Heat Sea l Te s ter

HST-H3 process, recalibration is not recommended for the user. For this purpose, a password is applied, which shows in the last line as “000”. The default password is “555”. The calibration procedure is followed:  

Connect the pressure sensor of the instrument with a pressure gauge featured with accuracy of 0.25% of reading value and resolution of 1kPa. Check zero point. Move the cursor to “Zero”. When the gas cylinder holds the upper sealing jaw in the upper position, the output pressure should be 0. Set it to 0 if not and press “SETUP” key to confirm. Check end point. Move the cursor to “End” and press “TEST” key. The upper sealing jaw moves down to meet the lower sealing jaw by the control of the gas cylinder. The displayed pressure should agree with the value on the pressure calibrator. Set to the correct value if not and press “SETUP” key to confirm.

Note: The instrument has been calibrated before shipment. If recalibration is required, please contact us for technical support. DO NOT change the calibration parameters or calibrate without instruction. 6. Return to the “Main” screen, and choose “Contact Us” to view contacting information.

Temperature Control The temperature is controlled via P.I.D technology to achieve a precision of ±0.5℃. The parameters have been optimized by the manufacturer and customers have no need to adjust for any purposes. 

Operation panel. The operation panel of the temperature control meter is shown in Figure 4. 13

Heat Sea l Te s ter

HST-H3

The “PV” window displays the present value of temperature; “SV” shows preset value of temperature. Under the “SV” window, there are six signal lights: MAN has no function; PRG indicates the status of the meter; COM turns on when instrument is connected with the computer; OP1, AU1, and AU2 correspond to respective input/output operation. The four function keys in the lower line are “Setup”, “Decimal Shift”, “Value Decrease” (incorporated with Run/Pause function), and “Value Increase” (incorporated with Stop function), respectively. Temperature setup. You can adjust the temperature with the “Value Increase” and “Value Decrease” keys. For your convenience, you can adjust the position of the decimal by the “Decimal Shift” key to set the value of corresponding digit. For example, if the desired temperature is 250℃ and current temperature is only 25℃, you can move the decimal to the hundred digit and change it from 0 to 2. Then set the rest digits.

Figure 4 Temperature Control Meter 

Parameter setup. You can perform temperature calibration and self-calibration by adjusting the corresponding parameters. Hold the “Setup” key for about 2 seconds to enter the parameter setup status. Employ “Value Increase” and “Value Decrease” to adjust parameters and press “Setup” one more time to move to the next parameter. Hold “Decimal Shift” key for 2 seconds to return the previous parameter. To exit the parameter setup 14

Heat Sea l Te s ter

HST-H3

status, hold the “Decimal Shift” key and press “Setup”. The system will automatically exit this status if no operation for 25 seconds. Self-calibration. Self-calibration is usually not active unless the temperature accuracy has been compromised after long time use. To activate it, hold “Decimal Shift” for 2 seconds, “AT” displays and blinks and the system enters self-calibration status. When “AT” stops blinking, the process finishes and the CTRL parameter will be set to 3 or 4 (default value 1). Temperature calibration. Place the instrument in an environment with ±2℃ temperature fluctuation for more than 2 hours. The current temperature is T1, where the temperature displayed on the meter is T2. Set the Sc parameter to be the difference between T1 and T2 (ΔT) and make sure the sign of ΔT is correct.

Pressure Control The pressure control knob is located on the upper right side of the front panel of the instrument. To set the pressure, pull out the knob and adjust it to the desired pressure. Then push in to lock it when setup is finished.

Heat Sealing Jaws HST-H3 employs two heat sealing jaws of which the upper one is the main sealing jaw providing accurate heat sealing of specimen and the lower one is an auxiliary sealing jaw whose main function is to lessen the temperature difference between the upper sealing jaw and lower sealing jaw to protect the accuracy of the upper sealing jaw. The shape of the sealing jaw surface can be customized based on the need of customers. Standard Material of Sealing Jaws: Upper Sealing Jaw: smooth metal surface Lower Sealing Jaw: silicon rubber surface
