Introduction In here you'll find patterns and instructions for a Hybrid Tea Rose flower, inspired by the Blue Moon cultivar. This Rose is large and lush, an ideal centerpiece for a bouquet or flower arrangement, and can easily hold its own as a sole blossom in a vase. This document have patterns and diagrams for the Rose in 3 shapes, and includes patterns for the sepals and leaves as well - enough to make a beautiful Blue Moon Rose flower arrangement :)

Materials

- Cotton Thread size #40 in your primary color & in green. - Crochet Hooks Size 0.6mm. - Scissors, Tweezer, Hot glue, Floral tape. - Metal Wires in Gauges 0.3mm or 0.38mm (aka Stringing Wire) - Metal Wire in gauge 16, used for main stems.

Pattern & material notes In this e-book I first show a pattern diagram, and then the instructions in American Standard Terms (You can see conversion table for British terms at the end of the e-book). After that you’ll find photo guides for how to build the flowers. Please note that in the images in the 'how to crochet...' photo guides I'm using larger thread than the one required for the pattern (easier to understand). I’ve created a page in my Blog where I updated a list of recommended tested threads - see here. * If you have problem finding the material needed, don’t hesitate to contact me and I’ll do my best to help.

The Blue Moon This document includes patterns and instructions for a Hybrid Tea rose, inspired by the popular Blue Moon cultivar, in three stages - Open, Half open and Close. Each flower includes sepals and 2 types of leaves.

Half open Blossom

Closed blossom

Open Blossom

Finished blossoms final measurements (Depends on how open you assemble it) : - Open: ~3.5-4” (9-10cm) x ~1.8” (4.5cm). - Half Open: ~2-2.3” (5-6cm) x ~1.6” (4cm). - Closed: ~1.2” (3cm) x ~1.4” (3.5cm). Please note: Leave a long wire tail for each element you crochet, this would allow you to ensure that everything it attached firmly, and you can later cut the wire. Moreover - it is highly recommended to iron and starch all elements prior to assembly. This document will first cover crocheting the petals, then the sepals, leaves, and finally the assembly of all elements to make the different flowers.  Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Rose Petals

To make a Blue Moon arrangement, we need to crochet 4 different shapes of petals. The technique for crocheting the petals is the same with all petals (please see photo guide before you start crocheting).

Petal #4

Petal #3

Petal #2

Petal #1

Each Flower shape needs the following petals: - Closed Rose: 4 x Petal #4, 4 x Petal #3. - Half open Rose: 4 x Petal #4, 4 x Petal #3, 5 x Petal #2. - Open Rose: 4 x Petal #4, 4 x Petal #3, 5 x Petal #2, 5 x Petal #1. Crocheting the petals is done in 3 stages: - Stage #1 - Crocheting the core The core of the petal is crocheted in rows (up & down). Each row of this stage is crocheted in the other side of its relative previous row - which means that before you start a row (after row #2), flip the element and crochet that row. - Stage #2 - Crocheting the bottom The bottom of the petal is crocheted in rows as well, in this case the rows are horizontal (left & right), and each row is worked in the opposite side of the previous row as well. - Stage #3 - Crocheting the Edge The edge of the petal is a single long round, crocheted around the element. This stage is being crocheted around a metal wire as well. Please Note - Petal #2 has 2 variations and Petal #1 has 3 variations. The variations of each petal are different from each other only in their Edge, you can crochet different variations or just crochet one version of each petal. The variation's only purpose is to make the open and half-open flowers a bit more complex/natural.  Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Crocheting a Petal As explained above, crocheting the petal is made in 3 stages: (1) Crocheting the core, (2) crocheting the bottom, and (3) crocheting the edge. All done in one continuous work. In the first stage we will work in rows, heading up and down, and make the core part of the petal, we’ll then continue working in rows, heading left and right, crocheting the bottom section, and finally - we’ll crochet one round, that will be the edge of the petal. In the last stage we will work in the available outer loops/stitches while include a metal wire. The photo guide below shows the process of crocheting the small petal (#4).

Step 1 - Start with a row of 16 chains

Step 3 - Start with a 2 double crochets in the same stitch, and continue following in the instructions

 Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Step 2 - Skip 3, and start heading back, crocheting in each stitch of the row ...

Step 4 - Once row 2 is finished.

Step 5 - Flip the element, and work the next row in the wrong side (the opposite of the previous row)

Step 7 - Once you reach the end of Row #3.

Step 9 - Start the next row with Chain 2 ... and follow the instructions. Continue to complete the entire core section.

Step 6 - Follow the instructions ...

Step 8 - Again, before you start crocheting the next row, flip the element, this row will be worked in the rights side. Repeat this in each row, each row is worked in the opposite side of the previous one.

Step 10 - Core part, once done.

Step 11 - Next, we start crocheting the bottom part (stage 2)

Step 12 - Start with a single chain

Step 13 - Crochet this row in the loops/holes available under the last single crochets of the core's rows (see red arrows). You are basically working between the first and second stitches of the rows.

Step 14 - Another example of where to work the stitches

Step 15 - ... under the last stitch of the core's row ...

Step 17 - Once row #1 of the bottom part is done.

Step 18 - Flip the element, and start row #2

Step 19 - Start the row with a chain, and continue by following the instruction, working in each stitch of the previous row.

Step 20 - Once Row #2 is finished.

Step 21 - Again, flip the element and do the last row.

Step 23 - YO

Step 23 - And pull through all loops to finish the decrease

Step 24 - Add a sl-st to complete the bottom part

Step 26 - Now we begin Stage #3, this stage will be crocheted around the element, and around a metal wire as well. A ~16" / 40cm wire is enough for all petals. its edge next to hook, leaving a 2-3" / 5-7cm tail.

Step 25 - And the bottom part is finished (Stage #2)

Step 27 - Start the stage with a single chain, crochet this chain around the wire.

Crocheting a Petal (#6)

Step 28 - Once first chain is finished. Please note that the metal wire is inside the stitch.

Step 29 - Work the next stitch in the hole pointed by the hook and red arrow, would be the tip of the decrease.

Step 30 - Doing the first single crochet, work the next stitch between the 1st and second stitches of the decrease (see red arrow)

Step 31 - Once second single crochet is done. Crochet the next one under the first single crochet of the bottom part's first row, see red arrow.

Step 32 - After the third single crochet. Next, continue following the pattern working in each chain of the core's chain row.

Step 33 - Once all single crochets are done.

Petal #2 Instructions Petal #2 comes in 2 variations - instructions-wise the differences between the variations are quite minute, and you'll only find them in Stage #3. The core and bottom part are exactly the same for both variations. The top part of the edge is where you'd find the difference, how many petals from each variations is up to your preference, I made the variations to add some complexity to the petals, so it won't appear like all petals are the same shape, and make the blossom appear more natural. Sepals Instructions The Sepals element has 5 sepals - each sepal is done separately. We first crochet the core, which is done in the round, and then we follow crocheting the sepals one after the other. Cutting the thread after each one. The sepals are done in rows (zig-zag), and include a non-standard motion borrowed from Tunisian crochet - one row, we crochet the stitches, adding loops to the hook, and in the next row we release loops from the hook. See a detailed photo guide of a single sepal that will show you how to crochet a sepal. It is recommended to go through the instructions and then head to the photo guide before crocheting the element. Step #1 : Crochet the element’s core Rnd 1 : Magic ring, and work in ring - ch, sc 15 times, join with sl-st to beg ch. Do not close the ring tightly, leaves small hole - make sure the hole is large enough that you can pass the stem through. Rnd 2-3 : Ch, sc 15 times, join with sl-st to beg ch. Once you finished the third row, you are going to have an element similar to the photo to the right. Next, we’ll move the thread from the current stitch to the adjacent one, by sl-st to the adjacent stitch (keeping the original crocheting direction) see photos in the next page.

Sepals Instructions (#2) At this point we start making the first sepal. Please note that you can make an "open" sepals element, in which the sepals are bent outwards, or a "close" sepals element, in which the sepals are not. To make an open element, you crochet the Sepals in the same direction you crocheted the rounds of the core element (top photo). To make the closed element, you crochet the sepals in the other direction (bottom photo). Step #2 : Crochet a Sepal As mentioned above, the sepals are being crocheted in horizontal rows, where in one row we crochet the stitches and collect loops on the hook, and in the next row, we release loops from the hook while we head back (See photo guide). Row 1: Ch 2, 2-st hdc inc 3 times (7 loops on hook). Row 2: Heading back. yo and pull through one loop 7 times. Row 3: Ch 2, hdc 6 times (7 loops on hook). Row 4: Heading back. yo and pull through one loop 7 times. Row 5: Ch 2, hdc 6 times (7 loops on hook). Row 6: Heading back. yo and pull through one loop 5 times, yo and pull through two loops. Row 7: Ch 2, hdc in same stitch as chains, hdc 5 more times, one in each stitch (7 loops on hook).  Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Row 12: Heading back. yo and pull through two loops 2 times. Row 13: Ch 2, hdc (2 loops on hook). Row 14: Heading back. yo and pull through all loops. Row 15: Last row. Ch 2, tighten with a knot and cut thread leaving around 2" / 5cm tail. First sepal is finished. Next, add thread in stitch you worked 3rd 2-st hdc inc in (see photos below), sl-st to adjacent stitch and repeat steps 1-15 to crochet the next petal. Repeat 5 times to crochet 5 sepals.

Crocheting a Sepal This photo guide will show you how to crochet a single sepal of the sepals element, stitch by stitch (almost). The Sepal is being done in a row by row motion, and incorporates a technique similar to Tunisian Crochet. I’ve used a larger thread in the photos to make them clearer and easier to follow.

Step 1 - Start the first row with 2 chains

Step 3 - Another 2-st hdc inc Step 2 - Followed with a 2-st hdc inc (2 half double crochets in the same stitch)

Step 4 - And the last 2-st hdc inc - not that we have 7 loops on hook. Now we'll start heading back releasing loops from the hook, one by one.

Step 5 - We start with yo (Yarn over)

Step 6 - And pull through one loop, notice that we have 6 loops on hook now.

Step 8 - And pull through one loop, 5 loops left on hook.

Step 10 - Continue to do the next row, starting with chain 2.

 Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Step 7 - We do the same, yo ...

Step 9 - Repeat this motion 5 more time, until you are left with one loop on hook.

Step 11 - And continue to follow the row's instructions. All the stitches are worked between the stitches (see photo above)

Step 13 - Now, we start heading back, again, pull through a single loop with each motion. Starting with yo ...

Step 30 - To move on to the next petal, add new thread through the stitch we worked the last 2-st hdc inc of the first row of the previous sepal

Step 31 - Pull thread through the stitch, sl-st to tighten.

Step 32 - And we add another sl-st to the adjacent stitch, where we'll start the next sepal.

Step 33 - We start the next sepal with chain 2, just like the first sepal.

Step 34 - And continue with 2-st hdc inc, exactly repeating the first sepal's instructions

Step 35 - Once the first row of the second petal is finished ... continue to finish the second sepal, and repeating to complete the element.

Large Leaf Instructions * Before you start crocheting the leaf, I recommend to take a look at the photo guide first. Measurement : ~2” (5cm) x ~1.4" (3.5cm)

Core Part Base Row: 25 Chains. Rnd 1: Crochet this round around a metal wire. Place the wire as its middle is where the hook is. a ~16" / 40cm wire should be long enough. Working around the metal wire, start with Ch 1, and continue to work in the stitch of the base row, working around the row - 25 sc, another sc at the tip, and 25 sc. Finish the round with a slst to beg ch. Next, we move on to crochet the body of the leaf. Starting with the first half. The body is worked in rows, in an inward/outward motion. First row will be worked in the stitches of rnd 1, and then we are going to flip the element, work in the wrong side in a direction that is away from the element (outward), in the stitches of the first row.

Row 1

The next row (#3) will be worked in the stitches of the previous row (#2), in the right side, and in the direction towards the element (inwards). Row 2

All outward rows are worked in the wrong side, and all the inward rows are worked in the right side. Each row worked in the stitches of the previous row. All inward rows will be joined with a stitch of Rnd 1 with a single slip stitch (see photo guide if this description is confusing). Row 3

Crocheting a Leaf A Leaf is made of 3 parts. The Core, and 2 body halves. When we crochet the leaf, we start with the core, continue to crochet one half of the body, and then crochet the other half. Both halves are exactly the same, as the leaf is symmetric in its shape. The photo guide below shows how to crochet the large leaf, the small leaf is no different in terms of technique used. So keep this photo guide in mind when you crochet the small leaf. (Because its difficult to get a clear photo of a size #40 thread, the thread used in this guide is larger then the required thread)

Step 1 - Start with the base chain row, crochet X chains (depending on the leaf you are crocheting)

Step 2 - Crochet the next round around a metal wire (and the base row), positioning the metal wire that its middle is where you are now.

Step 3 - Start the next round with a single chain, crochet is around the metal wire.

Step 4 - Continue this round following the pattern, crocheting single crochets around the base row.

Crocheting a Leaf (#4) Once we finished the first round of the leaf (step 16), we move on to crochet the body of the leaf. The body section is made of two halves, both are the same (in the photo below you see one half). Each half is made of rows that are worked in an up (outward, orange color in the photo below) & down (inward, blue color) motions. All outward rows are worked in the wrong side of the element (we flip the leaf and work the row), and the inward rows are worked in the right side (the normal side).

Once we finish one half of the leaf, we'll bring our thread to the tip of the element (red arrow) by crocheting a row of single crochet, and crochet the second half of the leaf by repeating the pattern of the first half.

Step 25 - Crochet the last half double crochet of this row in the single crochet you worked the last stitch of the first row of the body (see blue arrow).

Step 26 - Finish the row with a slip stitch to the second stitch counting from the stitch we worked the last half double crochet in (pointed with the hook)

Step 27 - Yarn over

Step 28 - And pull through the complete the row

Step 36 - Flip the element back to the right side and crochet the next inward row

Step 37 - Similar to the previous inward rows, finish the row with a sl-st to the second stitch counting from the last stitch you worked the previous inward row's sl-st in.

Step 38 - Repeat steps 35-37 to complete the first half of the leaf, all rows are being crocheted in the same fashion, just need to follow the pattern (photo above is midway)

Step 39 - Similar to the previous inward rows, finish the last row with a sl-st to the second stitch, from the last stitch you worked the previous inward row's sl-st in (would be the last stitch in that side of the element)

Step 40 - First half is finished

Step 41 - Crochet a single crochet at the bottom tip of the element

Crocheting a Leaf (#9)

Step 42 - Next, we'll crochet a row of single crochets, working between the stitches of round one, each single crochet is worked between 2 single crochets of round 1.

Step 44 - Once the row of single crochets is finished, before the last sl-st.

Step 46 - Next, we'll simply repeat steps 17-40 to crochet the second half - which is exactly the same as the first half.

Assembling a Leaves Element This is my favourite kind of leaves element --- you could use the leaves separately or group them in any other way. To make this leaves element, you'll need 3 leaves, I prefer one large and two small. Wrap their stems with floral tape and follow this photo guide :

Step 1 - 3 Leaves with their stem wrapped with floral tape

Step 2 - Please all three one on top of the other, with the leaf you intend to be in the middle behind the other two.

Step 3 - Wrap floral tape around all stems

Step 4 - You'll have this element once floral tape stage is done

Step 5 - Now simply open the two front leaves to the sides, and you got the element :)

Page 58

Blue Moon Rose

Assembling a Closed Blossom Once all the elements of the closed rose have been crocheted, we move on to the assembly stage. For this stage, you'll need : - 4 x Petal #4, 4 x Petal #3, 1 x Sepals element. - Tweezers, Floral tape, Hot Glue & Gauge 16 wire (this metal wire will be the stem, so cut it at the length you want the stem to be) We'll start by making the core of the of the flower by applying a good amount (see photos) of hot glue to the tip of the metal wire, once the glue dried and cooled, we'll add the petals, starting with the smaller petals (#4), and finishing with the larger petals (#3). Finally, we'll add the sepals element, and apply floral tape to the stem.

Step 1 - Add hot glue to the tip of the wire, this glue will act as the core of our blossom.

Step 2 - Let it cool down a bit (its going to be hot!)

Step 3 - And once its manageable, shape it with your fingers, try to make it even and slightly pointy towards the top.

Step 4 - Use scissors, if it dries too quickly and its difficult to shape...

Assembling a Closed Blossom (#2)

Step 5 - That's, roughly, the end shape you are looking for.

Step 6 - Next, take 3 of petal #4, hold them as shown in the photo (slightly overlapping, but positioned the same vertically)

Step 7 - And apply a drop of hot glue to each of this petals bottom tip.

Step 8 - Continue to apply hot glue to each petal's left edge (in the middle), as shown in the photo.

Step 9 - Place the core roughly in the middle of the 3 petals

Step 10 - And roll the petals, starting with the outer petal's side (left side).

Assembling a Closed Blossom (#3)

Step 11 - Roll the entire element

Step 12 - And tightly twist it

Step 13 -This is, roughly, how it should look from the top.

Step 14 - Next, we'll ensure the inner part will not open and remain tight by gluing the outer edge of the what used to be the inner petal.

Step 15 - Apply glue to the outer edge of the petal (bottom to the mid section, not all the way to the top)

Step 16 - You can continue to tighten the element by twisting it inwards using the tweezers, this is optional, do it only if you feel the element is too loose.

Step 18 - Once you feel the element is tight enough, we'll glue the last petal that's loose.

Step 19 - Apply glue to the outer edge of the petal

Step 20 - And press is against the body of the element.

Step 21 - Again, if needed - tweezer twist the element to tighten it.

Step 23 - If you have some extra thread tails, apply a bit of hot glue to the base of the element, and wrap the tails tightly around the base.

Step 25 - Next, we add the 4th Petals #4, fold it as its hugging the element.

Step 27 - Apply glue to both edges. Left edge ...

Step 30 - A top view of our element ...

Step 31 - Next, we start adding the outer layer of petals (petals #3) - one by one, we'll apply a drop of glue to each petal's bottom tip, and add it to the element, next, we'll glue the edges of the petals.

Step 32 - Add a drop of glue, and place the petal around the element.

Step 33 - Place it as one side of it overlaps the first petal (see petal numbers in red for reference)

Step 34 - Do the same for the next (2) petal. Place it where it overlaps both previous petal's edges.

Step 35- Lastly, for this layer, add the next petal (3), and place it as it overlaps both petals.

Step 37 - Go petal by petal, and glue the edges to the element, apply only a small amount of hot glue to the edges, and don't glue all the way to the top of the petal, leave some space at the top to shape the petals edges.

Step 39 - Make sure its consistent and balanced, and if there is a loose part, apply a bit of glue and flatten it.

Step 36 - Next, we glue the edges of the petals to the element, Start by gluing the edges that should be glued to the element (Both edges of petal 1 should be glued to the element, and one edge of petal 2)

Step 38 - Continue to cover all petals.

Step 40 - Once you're done, it should look roughly like this.

Assembling a Closed Blossom (#8)

Step 41 - Next, we'll add the last petal (4), it will be added in a way that it overlaps petal 1 completely, and overlaps the edges of petals 3 and 2.

Step 42 - See that Petal 4's middle is roughly over petal 3's edge, and it completely overlaps petal 1 and petal 2's edge

Step 43 - Glue the petal to the element by applying a bit of glue on both edges of the petal Step 44 - ... applying glue on the edges of the petal ...

Assembling a Closed Blossom (#9)

Step 47 - (Optional, you can also do it at the end) shape the edges of the petals to your preference.

Step 48 - This is how I chose to shape the petals in this blossom - it is up to how open or close you want it to be.

Step 49 - If you end up with a lot of metal wire tails, now is the time to get rid of them and smoothen our stem. Apply glue to the base of the element / top section of the stem.

Step 50 - While the glue dries, press the tails together.

Step 51 - And cut all the wires that are loose.

Step 51 - Next, tightly wrap floral tape along the stem.

Step 56 - And press the sepals against the element, and the bottom section of the sepals as well. Press until the glue dries.

Step 53 - We'll finish the blossom by adding the Sepals element - you can choose to either add the element where the sepals are pointing up, or down.

Step 55 - Apply glue to its midsection, and slightly up the sepals

Step 57 - And the closed blossom is finished!

Half Open Flower Assembly (#1) Assembling the Half Open rose is done very similarly to the Closed rose. In fact, the Half Open rose is the closed rose with an additional layer of petals (5 x Petals #2). Follow steps 1-46 from the photo guide of the closed rose, and once you're done, continue assembling the flower with the following steps : Step 1 - Before we start adding the next layer of petals, in some cases, you'll find the bottom of your element a bit loose and not tight enough - in this case, you can sew and pull the bottom edges of the petals (where its loose)

Step 2 - Sew through the element and the bottom edge of a petal.

Step 4 - Sew again ...

Step 3 - And pull downwards

Step 5 - and pull, repeat until you feel the bottom section of the element is tight and smooth enough,

Half Open Flower Assembly (#2)

Step 6 - Now we start adding the petals, one by one. Apply a drop of glue to the bottom tip of each petal (see red arrow), and press the tip against the element. Add the first petal so it overlaps the edges of the 2 current outer petals.

Step 8 - And the next Petal, roughly across the first petal.

Step 10 - Wrap your hand around the element, and gently squeeze it, this will make it easier to work with the element as it will make the petals less loose.

 Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Step 7 - Add the next petal, it needs to slightly overlap the first petal.

Step 9 - And the next (forth), the four petals should be evenly spread around the element.

Step 11 - Finish this layer by adding the last petal so its middle falls evenly over 2 petals.

Half Open Flower Assembly (#3)

Step 12 - Once all petals have been positioned, we can move to gluing them to the element. Similar to the gluing stage of the closed rose, we glue the edges of the petals, starting with the inner edges and moving outwards.

Step 13 - Apple glue to an edge, and press it against the element, try to maintain consistent tightness across petals.

Step 14 - And move outwards ... apply glue ..

Step 15 - And press against the element...

Step 16 - Do the same for the last petal as well, apply glue to both edges of the petal ...

Step 17 - And press the petal against the element.

Half Open Flower Assembly (#4)

Step 18 - Similar to steps 1-5, you can tighten any loose petal, by sewing the bottom of the petals to the element, and pulling downwards.

Step 19 - In case you have a lot of tails of thread and wires (you should :)), apply glue to the bottom of the element / top of the stem, and once it dries, cut the extra tails.

Step 20 - Finish the stem by tightly wrapping floral tape around it

Step 21 - Next, add the sepals, apply glue to the sepals, and press against the bottom part of the element.

Step 22 - In this case, I'm using a sepals element with the sepals pointing downwards (sepals element #2). Gently pull the sepals downwards with your hands

Step 23 - And the Half open rose is finished!

Open Flower Assembly (#1) Similar to the half open flower, that continues where we ended the closed flower - the open flower continues where we ended the half open one. The open rose is the half open rose with an additional layer of petals (5 x petal #1). To make an Open Flower - continue from step 18 of the half open rose :

Step 1 - Position 4 of Petal #1 around the element, spread evenly. Don't forget to apply a drop of glue to the bottom tip of each petal before pressing against the element.

Step 2 - ... And another petal (petal number 5, numbered in the photo) that falls on two petals evenly. Once all petals are positioned, we start gluing them to the element ...

Step 3 - Since this blossom is an open blossom, we don't want to apply glue in the upper sections of these petals as we won't be able to open the petals.

Step 4 - Only apply to the mid-bottom section of the petal's edges.

Step 5 - And press against the element to ensure they stick ...

Step 6 - Similar to the previous petal layers, we can furthermore tighten and smoothen the outer surface of the element but sewing the bottom section of the petals and pulling down

Step 8 - Wrap floral tape around the top area of the stem

Step 10 - (Optional) Shape the sepals, upwards if you want them to go up, or downwards if you want them to go down :)
