Making the Column

A Cattleya’s Orchid Column texture is smooth, and its structure is quite detailed - it will require us to leave the crochet world and step into the kitchen. We’ll make the column from, basically, play dough :) There are plenty of Play Dough tutorials online, here I’ll include mine - which I used for this blossom. You’ll need (enough for ~4 blossoms) : - Corn starch (corn flour), ~2 table spoons. - Baby oil, ~2 table spoon. - PVA glue (White glue), ~2 table spoons.

Moreover, you’ll need Acrylic Colors in White and Soft greens. First, we’ll mix & knead the corn starch, baby oil and the white glue together - until the mixture will become a soft, non-sticky, non-crumbly smooth dough. Next, we’ll apply a bit of color and continue kneading until the dough will fully absorb the color. Finally, we’ll use the dough to make the head. Follow the photo guide below for a complete tutorial :

Step 1 - Add 2 Spoons of Corn starch to a small bowl.  Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Step 2 - Make a hole in the middle of the starch, and add the oil and glue to it.

Step 3 - Add a table spoon of Baby Oil.

Step 4 - And a flat table spoon of white glue.

Step 5 - Mix and apply pressure with the spoon, do not knead yet, as the dough is too sticky at the beginning.

Step 6 - Occasionally feel the dough, and once it is not too sticky, start kneading it (clean your hands!)

Step 7 - If the dough is too crumbly, or too sticky. add more oil.  Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Step 8 - And, if its breaking, add more glue (don’t add big amounts, only a little bit).

Page 19

Making the Column (#3)

Step 9 - Your hands will become dirty - that’s a good sign!

Step 10 - Keep kneading, until the dough feels soft, none sticky and very smooth.

Once the dough is ready. It’s time to add the white color - this will make the dough brighter and shinier, and the color white will be more emphasized. So, once we’ll add the baby oil layer later, it would look cleaner and smoother.

Step 11 - Add about a tea spoon of white color, and continue kneading.

Step 12 - Until the dough is white and shiny - maintaining the same texture.

Now, we’re ready to move on and make the actual column.

The amount of dough that we’ve just made (roughly the size photographed here), is enough for plenty of blossoms. You can keep the dough for a long time as long and its in a sealed environment (preferably in a plastic bag, to prevent it from sticking). Step 13 - Keep the dough in a plastic bag to protect is from drying up and loosing its texture.  Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Finishing the Column

To complete the column you’ll need : 1 - The dough we just made. 2 - Yellow & Green (or blue) Acrylic colors. 3 - Scissors and Tweezers. 4 - Stem (Gauge 16/18). 5 - White Glue (Not in photo). See photo guide below :

Step 14 - Slightly fold the tip of the Stem.

Step 15 - Roughly yo this angle.

Step 16 - Take a small amount of dough (see photo).

Step 17 - Dip the tip of the Stem in white glue around 1.5” (4cm)).

Step 18 - Wrap the dough around the glued section.

Step 19 - Make sure its wrapping the stem completely.

Step 20 - Smoothen it with your fingers, be gentle.

Step 21 - Tighten the bottom tip. This will make the element hold better.

Step 22 - Measuring tape for reference (its in centimetres).  Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Step 23 - Next, we’ll make the outer layer. Lets prepare the dough by taking another small chunk ...

Step 24 - Give it a drop shape.

Step 25 - And flatten it - in this case I placed the dough between two flat plastic bags.

Step 26 - Gently rub and press against the dough to make it flat.

Step 27 - Try to keep the shape oval, or egg-shape, or, well - alien-face shape :)

Step 28 - Once the dough is flat, gently take it out of the plastic.

Step 29 - It should be roughly this size (same length as the dough that’s attached to the stem).

Step 30 - Place the layer on top of the first dough element, with the thin end pointing up (the top)

Step 31 - Do not press it too strong - be gentle.

Step 32 - At this stage, it should wrap the element, but be more like a “cape”.

Step 33 - Slightly press the tip of the layer, make it a bit pointy.

Step 34 - At this stage, It should look roughly like this.

Step 35 - Use a knife or scissors, to cut the side of the layers, you’d want it to only slightly extend beyond the dough below (See photos in next page).

Finishing the Column (#5)

Step 36 - Don’t cut too short, we’ll cut again later - if needed.

Step 37 - Use your preferred cake shaping tool to create a bit of a gutter between the outer layer and the inner dough.

Step 38 - Gently flatten the side edges of the layer with your fingers.

Step 38 - Cut the edges, if needed (see if the column seems unbalanced).

Step 39 - Next, apply some baby oil to your fingers and rub gently against the outer layer to smoothen it.  Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Step 40 - Use the shaping tool to create thin and subtly grooves at the outer layer, this will give the column a more natural look.

Step 41 - Lastly (and optionally), use a bit of yellow paint.

Step 41 - Next, use a bit of soft green (or your choice of green).

Step 42 - And apply to the tip of the column (only slightly, and only on the outer layer).

Step 42 - And apply to the bottom section of the layer. You can also spread it around with your fingers.

Finishing the Blossom

To finish the flower you’ll need : 1 - 2 Petals. 2 - All Sepals. 3 - 1 Lip. 4 - 1 Column. 5 - Floral Tape.

Follow the photo guide bellow to see how to build the blossom.

Step 1 - Fold the Column section to, roughly 90 degrees angle.

Step 2 - Slightly fold (inwards) the bottom edge of the Lip. Create a “nook” for the column

Step 3 - Place/Slide the column into the nook.

Step 4 - Tightly wrap floral tape around the stem and the metal wires of the lip to keep them together.

Step 5 - Make sure the weight of the Lip don’t pull it down, if it does - wrap another layer of tape.

Step 6 - A front view - we’ll arrange and shape the lip at the end.

Step 7 - Take on of the petals and fold it outwards do create an elevated line at the middle.

Step 8 - Open the petal again, you should see the line in the middle.

Step 9 - Attach the Petal to the side of the Lip, make their bases slightly overlap.

Other Arrangement Elements

To complete a Cattleya arrangement, or a small potted Cattleya, the 2 major elements you’ll need to add are Leafs and Pseudobulbs. In this section, I’ll include patterns and instructions for 2 sizes of leafs and a variable size pseudobulb, and a short guide on how to bring them together.

Small Leaf Large Pseudobulb Small Pseudobulb Large Leaf

To finish the Pot/Arrangement, once all the elements have been crocheted - you can either use foam or some paper towels (like in my case :)), and arrange the elements in the Pot to achieve your desired look.

You can play with this size of this element - making it larger by crocheting more chains in the first row, and increasing the amount of HDC in each of the other rows accordingly.

Pseudobulb Instructions

The Pseudobulb is being crocheted in the rows, in a zig-zag motion. The odd Rows’ stitches (apart from the first row) are being crocheted either in the Back Posts (for single crochets) or in the Back Loops for the hdcs), See Appendix B. To crochet different sizes of pseudobulbs, simply crochet the first row in a different number of chains (any number between 20-60), and adjust the next rows by crocheting less or more half double crochets to match the first row.

Please note that the smaller the element is, you’d want to crochet less rows (make sure your total row count is odd all the time). Row 1 : Ch 50 times. Row 2 : Ch 1, sc 5 times, hdc 40 times, sc 5 times. Row 3 : Continue by changing direction - Ch 1, BPSc (Back Post Single Crochet) 5 times, BLHDc 40 times (Back Loop Half Double Crochet), BPSc 5 times. Repeat rows 2 & 3 six more times (ie, make Rows 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 as Row 2, and Rows 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 as Row 3). Once you’ve finished crocheting the element you’ll have a rectangular shaped element (see photo to the right, which is of a 20 chain element). Next, we’ll close it by either sewing the edges together, or crocheting them together (see photos).  Facebook Etsy Ravelry

Finishing the Leaf Stem

Cattleya’s leaf stems structure is made of a leaf connected to pseudobulb at the bottom, and both are connected to a single stem. Once you’ve crocheted a leaf and a pseudobulb, you can move on to make a leaf stem. You’ll need a stem (gauge 16/18) and floral tape.

Step 1 - Connect the Leaf to the stem, by first wrapping the metal wire to the stem.

Step 2 - Next, tightly wrap floral tape around the base of the petal and the top section of the stem to keep them firmly together.

Step 3 - Slide the pseudobulb from the bottom of the stem up.

Step 4 - Until it meets the leaf. Push the leaf into the pseudobulb until they are nicely and firmly attached.

Crocheting the Pseudobulb (BPSc & BLHDc)

This is the technique to achieve the shape of the pseudobulb. This photo guide does not show how to crochet the element, but only the method of achieving the shape. The special stitches used are Back Post Single Crochet (BPSc) and Back Loop Double Crochet (BLHDc). Because we will be working in the Back Posts, we’ll flip the element on certain rows for easy access. I’ve used a much thicker thread in this guide, so it would be easier to follow the steps - for the pseudobulb you’ll have to use thread in size #20.

Step 1 - We start with two rows of chains and half double crochets (second row starts with a sc).

Step 2 - Next, flip the element - we’ll work the next row on the back (wrong) side.

Step 3 - Start the next row with a chain, and follow with a sc - work the sc in the hole (Back Post) pointed by the red arrow.

Step 4 - Through the back loop ...

Crocheting the Leaf (Between the Posts)

This is the technique that’s used in the leafs. All the stitches (apart from the first round) are being worked between the posts of the stitches of their previous rounds (respectively). In the photo guide here, I’m using a much thicker yarn (just to make it easier to follow). Working between the posts simply means that we work each stitch between the posts of the stitches “below” it.

Step 1 - Start with a simple element (for example purposes).

Step 2 - Next row is being worked between the posts, starting with two chains.

Step 3 - Yo and insert the hook between the posts (red arrow) of the stitches below, yarn over again and pull.

Step 4 - Complete the Double crochet. You’ll see an opening - that’s the hole between the posts (red arrow). Repeat the same with the rest of the stitches to complete the leaves.

Appendix D

Crocheting the Petals (Rnds on top of the other)

This is the technique that’s used in the petals. The first 2 rounds of the petals are being worked in the stitches of the foundation row. This makes both rows appear as their are one on top of the other. The technique is easy, but I decided to include a short photo guide in case it still might be a bit confusing. Again, as with the previous appendices, the thread is thicker than the thread that is used in the elements.

Step 1 - Start with a simple element made of foundation row of chains, and another round of single crochets.

Step 2 - Next row is being worked in the chains of the foundation row - starting with a chain.

Step 3 - Followed by a single crochet, worked in a chain of the foundation row.

Step 4 - Yarn over, and pull through the loop. Red arrow points to the Chain we worked in.

Step 6 - Once second single crochet is done.
