I’m going to tell you the story of when I studied at university. It was way back(1) in 2011. I had taken a gap year(2) after high school and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’d ever made. I found my true passion in(3) banking and financing. Then I attended RMIT university(4), which is one of the top schools in Vietnam with competitive admission(5). I majored in(6) Finance because I wanted to fulfil my dream of(7) working in a bank. You know, being a finance major meant that I had to work with numbers and meet deadlines(8) on a regular basis. The environment was what I liked most in my university – I mean, the facilities were top-notch(9) with air conditioners and Apple iMac computers. On top of that, teachers were very supportive and friendly, and I always turned to them for advice(10)

I wish I could somehow relive my time there once more.

1. Do you work or are you a student? I am currently studying at the University of Finance and Marketing, which is one of the most famous universities in Vietnam and majoring in International Business administration. 2. Why did you choose that school? I didn’t actually choose it. You know, this school was actually one of the top-notch universities that my parents believed would suit me the most. That’s why they told me to apply for it, and so I did. 3. What do you like most about your school? There’s a lot to like about my school. It’s hard to pick the one thing that stands out. Maybe it’s the supportive teachers here. I mean they are someone that I will always turn to for advice when I have to make an important decision. 4. What do you dislike about your school? I would say it is the workload. I mean there are so many assignments that students have to study very hard for, in order to meet deadlines. 5. Is there anything you want to improve in your school? Despite its top-notch facilities and beautifully designed buildings, my school really needs to provide more green space for students on campus as well as in classrooms. You know, more trees will provide more shade and cool air for us to study more efficiently.

1. What is your major? I major in International economics and businesses, which has the most competitive admission requirements in my school. Every year, there are many thousands of people who want to study this major but only 150 are accepted. 2. Why did you choose this major? I am currently studying in the University of Finance and Marketing and majoring in International Business administration. Well, I am a sophomore. 3. Do you enjoy what you study? I major in International economics and businesses. Actually I chose this major because my brother talked me into it. He said majoring in economics was going to help me a lot in my future career. 4. What is your favorite subject at school? Not really. I don’t think what I am learning is practical and students have to meet a lot of deadlines on a regular basis. But my friends at school are really nice. They are the main reason for me to go to class. 5. What do you plan to do after graduation? Well I haven’t thought about it yet. My aim is to run a business of my own but I haven’t figured out what the business model would be. So I think after graduation, I will get a job in a small startup to get more experience first. Ok, so a hard time that I had during my studies was when I was in my final year of high school. At that time my academic performance was not as good as I had hoped and I was trying extra hard to prepare for the university entrance examination. The university that I was hoping to apply for was one of the top-ranking universities in my country and had a very competitive admission. students for their future careers. So, as I was saying, I was having quite a difficult time trying to prepare for my end of year high school exams and the university entrance examination, and I was beginning to feel a lot of pressure to perform well, in order to secure my place at university, and follow the path to a rewarding and satisfying career. I guess the main reason that I found this time so difficult was because I had to study for so many different exams in such a short period of time. You know, I wasn’t naturally talented in any subject at school so I really had to study extra hard in order to attain my desired academic results. But, after about three months of a really hectic study schedule I managed to exceed my expectations and I just about aced all of my exams. I got the results that I wanted and was admitted into my chosen university. So, although it was an extremely stressful time that I would prefer to forget about, my hard work all paid off in the end.

Alright let me tell you about the time that I helped my girlfriend learn IELTS. So it was way back in 2018 when she was about to retake her IELTS test after an unsuccessful attempt earlier. She failed at speaking (only 6.5), so she asked me to communicate in English for a week to practice before she sat for the exam. I thought it was silly at first, but went along anyway. I struggled a lot during our first conversations as talking in another language makes me feel distant, even though I was majoring in English at that time. How ironic! Finally, I came to my senses and decided to treat her as one of my students. Things started to get better and I was able to detect her biggest issue in speaking: her fluency. Similar to other Vietnamese English teachers, she focuses too much on perfecting her speech: adding “big” words and avoiding grammatical mistakes, which eventually leads to a loss of fluency. I gave her few tips, one of which was to stop worrying about speaking the first thing that comes off the top of her head because speaking is a test of your communication skills, not your vocabulary bank. Fortunately, she began to speak more fluently and achieved 8.5 in her next speaking test. I feel pretty proud of myself as a teacher and also pretty happy for my girlfriend as she was able to speak her mind and got the score she deserved!

Let me tell you about chemistry, which is a subject I used to hate but have now found my true passion for. It was way back during my 8th grade when we were first introduced to the subject, most of the students, including me, were really excited at the chance to make stuff explode or at least change color. However, our hopes and dreams were quickly crushed since during our first chemistry class, our teacher gave each of us the periodic table and laid down a thick stack of paper full of theoretical exercises. Looking at the table, my mind automatically shut down at the giant amount of knowledge we must learn, including 118 elements and their molar masses, densities and boiling points. The first semester was miserable as chemistry required a lot of memorization. Even though it took us ages to learn all the materials by heart, I finally managed to memorize most of the periodic table after a while. Interestingly enough, I soon realized that there was not much logical thinking involved in chemistry like in math or physics. Chemistry exercises started to become much easier. Plus, our teacher finally allowed us to do the flashy experiments we’ve always wanted. That’s how chemistry was transformed from one of the most boring subjects to one of my favorites for the rest of my high school years. I am now attending the Science and Technology University to fulfil my dream of becoming a chemist.

I’ve been working as an English teacher at ABC University, which is one of the top schools in Vietnam. Ok, so I’d like to describe a time when I quit my job and started a new career, this was about 10 years ago. So at the time I was working as an engineer for a large construction company but I had started to become a little bit sick and tired of the way I was treated by my superiors. You know, although I got along great with most of my colleagues, I felt that my boss didn’t value all of my hard work and dedication to the company, and in addition to this, because it was a construction company, I had to spend a lot of time in various workplaces where the conditions were sometimes quite harsh. Another factor that contributed to my decision to quit was because I knew that there was very little chance to get promoted in this company. So after quite some time deciding whether to quit my job or not, I decided to throw chance to the wind and have faith that I would find another, better job. Something that I had thought about every now and then was having a go at teaching English. So I immediately enrolled in an English teaching course so that I could familiarize myself with the knowledge necessary to be a good teacher. I then emailed an English Language center in Vietnam that I knew about through a contact of mine and we discussed the details of a teaching position that I would go on to start a couple of months later. You know, initially I was really nervous about quitting my job and pursuing a new career in teaching, but after the first few months of living in a foreign country and gaining some valuable teaching experience, I never looked back. This was a great opportunity for me to broaden my horizons and I feel that this was a life changing experience.

Ok, so when I was young, I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to be when I got older, but every now and then I did think about having a go at working in business, or becoming a businessman. And, eventually, when I left school and went to university to broaden my horizons, I realised that being a businessman was actually my dream job. Actually, there aren’t any qualifications that are necessary to become a successful businessman, take a look at Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates for example, but I think it is a good idea to get a degree and an MBA from a reputable university to give you a solid foundation for your career. however, starting your own business requires a lot of dedication and faith in such a harsh and competitive business environment like in most countries today. But if you want some experience working for someone else before starting your own business, then there are always many jobs available for people with business qualifications, though the job market can be quite competitive so a contact in a company where you want to apply for a job is always of great value. So there are a couple of reasons why this is my ideal job, but the first reason is because I’ve always loved the idea of working in a professional workplace, and the idea of being able to get promoted and climb the ladder within a company. And the second reason is because, eventually I really want to start my own business so that I can be my own boss, and have a more flexible work-life balance. Also, I have a few really great business ideas that I think could be a real goldmine in the future!

Alhough dealing with codes and computer technology all day long can be a challenging line of work, she really has a knack for science subjects and enjoys what she is doing right now. Back in our days in school, she excelled in math and physics since she usually came up with solutions to problems in just minutes. Quynh Anh is not only smart and also very sensible in social issues. She has the ability to think things through and always gives others a hand when they need, so I always turn to her for advice whenever I’m in trouble. I am going to share with you my dream house. Two years ago, during the winter break of my college sophomore year, I spent three weeks with my uncle’s family in Philadelphia. On New Year’s Eve, my uncle took me to a party hosted by Mr. Thompson, one of his friends who, according to my uncle, is ridiculously rich. And he was not joking. Anyway, not until halfway through the trip did I realize I was in the middle of nowhere and when I questioned my uncle, he replied: “yeah we’re going to Atlantic city, it’s a beach house”. But it was not a house. It was a mansion! The enormous construction, which had an idyllic view over the Atlantic Ocean, looked like a palace on the outside. Inside the house was just an architectural masterpiece. You see, all the decorations had a beach theme ranging from the blue shell-shaped toothbrush holder to the white sand carpet. Although there were four guest bedrooms on the ground floor, I chose to spend that night on the carpet. On the second floor was a massive balcony looking towards the beautiful sea where we welcomed the New Year together with a glass of champagne. At that moment of luxury, I made a promise to myself: “this will be my house in the future.”

Today I’d like to tell you about a park that I frequently visit. It’s not too far from my house which is located in a so-called up-and-coming neighborhood. Perhaps about a 5-minute bike ride away, if the roads are clear. As for the last time I visited it, if I remember correctly, it was last week. I had to get in a quick workout, so I rode my motorbike to the park at around 2pm. When I arrived, I met a couple of friends who are kind of like my workout partners. This park is just perfect for working out because it has all the exercise equipment I need like bars and parallel bars. It’s also surrounded by lots of green and a wide variety of flowers that bloom in the summer months. The main reason I absolutely love visiting this park is of course because I can do my workouts here. But actually, it’s not only that. I’ve also met some fantastic people here and we’ve even made our own ‘’team’’. I believe we’ll teach people how to do street workouts in the future and I certainly hope we’ll be doing that at this particular park.

Today I’m going to talk about a place I think is really quiet, which is the elevator. I know library or cafe will more likely to pop up in our mind when we are asked to name a quiet place, but have you ever thought about the fact that people rarely talk to each other in the elevator? Indeed, when three to four people are cramped into a confined area, human interactions are reduced to almost none and the awkward silence will continue until you exit. And that’s why I believe the elevator is one of the quietest places on Earth. Speaking of why I think of the elevator, it was all thanks to a security guard. As I was walking my bike out of the basement of my apartment building last week, I couldn’t find that security guard, who never left his spot, until the elevator bell rang “ding” and there he was. He walked out of the elevator with his guitar in his hands, grinning to me: “Yeah, sorry I went in to record some of my new songs. It’s so quiet and fully soundproof”. He has a thing for music so that did not surprise me one bit, yet I still hope that he pays more attention to our bikes next time. But I guess I have to thank him and his mini studio for helping me coming up with this idea. That’s all I got.

every day after school I would usually go swimming before going for a cup of coffee(3) with my friends. Well … One of the favorite films of mine that I would like to talk about is called About time. I saw it on the big screen about 7 years ago, back when I was a university student. I honestly was never a big fan of cheesy romance movies, which is what this movie appeared to be when you first watch the trailer, but I was wrong, there was more to it than what it seemed like, I guess we should never judge a book by its cover Anyway, the story was set in England, in a small town called Cornwall. Rachel McAdams, an actress I really like, was in the leading role, she is so pretty and charismatic, a sight for sore eyes you may say, but in a simple and classy way. The other actors and actresses I didn’t know very well, but their performance really blew me away after I saw the film. The movie tells the story of how a man named Tim, meets the woman of his dream. But the special thing about him is that he possesses the ability to travel back in time. However, time travelling can get messy so he has to be really careful about it. He meets Mary when he comes to London for work, they fall in love and finally get married and have kids. At first, Tim uses his power to travel back quite a lot, but later on he realizes that he doesn’t need to cling on to the past to live a happy and fulfilled life, he just needs to live in the moment and pay attention to all the little things, enjoy them while they last, which to me is such an inspirational lesson.

I’m going to tell you about a skill that takes a long time to learn, and that is playing a musical instrument, or more specifically, playing the guitar. There are many ways you can learn to play the guitar but I guess the most common way is to get guitar lessons from a guitar teacher. I think you can find a guitar teacher in just about any town or city because it’s probably one of the most popular musical instruments to learn. Personally, I think learning with a teacher in a face to face lesson is probably the most effective but expensive method. But if you can’t afford private lessons, there are many cheap or even free websites to learn from. Learning to play the guitar is something that takes a long time because there are many aspects involved. Playing the guitar involves both your hands doing different things at the same time, which can be very difficult to become good at and takes a lot of practise. Actually, at first it is very difficult to play something on the guitar that actually sounds good, and many people give up quickly because they lose motivation when they can’t see any improvement in a short period of time. But, like any skill worth knowing, you must understand that practice makes perfect. I guess some people would say that this skill isn’t really beneficial for the future, but I would say that music is an important part of most people’s lives. So, whether you can play the guitar, or if you simply love to listen to music, then probably sometime in the future, your guitar or someone else’s guitar is going to have some kind of positive affect on your and other people’s mood or emotions.

I am a bookworm so when it comes to describing a book I read, I am really confused since I don’t know which one to choose, but I will tell you about the book that I have just finished most recently – Angels and Demons – a bestselling mystery-thriller novel written by Dan Brown. The whole story revolves around the protagonist named Robert Langdon who is on a quest to rescue the Pope and discover the underlying mysteries of the Catholic Church. Though the book involves a lot of religious issues, it can cater to all kinds of readers as there aren’t many technical terms. From my point of view, it is a true masterpiece, enchanting and captivating, filled with conspiracies and plot twists that really send shivers down my spine. I was so fascinated by the book that I had to find the film adaptation online to watch afterwards, and it did not let me down at all. The movie was so action-packed that it kept me on the edge of my seat. What I especially like about the book is that it is very thought provoking and it kept me thinking for a very long time after I had already finished reading. I appreciate the moral lessons of the book. The story, though may sound distant to our lives, conveys meanings that are relatable to readers, and I am grateful that I learnt something from the book. So, the product that I purchased that I’m quite satisfied with is my laptop computer. I bought this laptop about one year ago from a computer store here in Hanoi with some money that I had saved up. There’re a few reasons why I bought this laptop but the main reasons are for work and for entertainment. These days it’s almost impossible to get by without a computer or a smartphone because of the advancement of the Internet. Although I could go to an Internet café to access the Internet and use a computer, it is much more convenient to just own my own laptop so that I can use it whenever and wherever I want. As I was saying, I do need to use my laptop to create documents for my work and also I like to use it to keep myself updated to the latest news and keep in touch with my friends through social media. Although sometimes an immense amount of information on the Internet stresses me out, I still think it is very handy to own a laptop. So there are a couple of reasons why I’m happy with this product, and the first reason is because of its size. I like to travel a lot so I bought a small 11.6-inch screen laptop that would is very portable, easy to carry, it doesn’t weigh much and takes up such little space in my luggage, and since owning it I have taken it with me to a lot of places and it’s never been a hassle, unlike my old laptop which was big and bulky and weighed a ton. The other reason I’m happy with this product is because even though I have only owned it for about a year, I have never had any problems with it. I use it every day for many hours and it’s never missed a beat, and I’ve never had to take it back to be repaired or fixed in any way. It still works as perfectly as the day I bought it.

Today I would like to tell you about a time I used online banking to pay the bills for coach tickets. It was last summer when my roommate and I decided to go on a trip to Dalat after having finished our final semester examination. We were so up to our ears in preparing for the exam, as well as finishing tasks given at the part-time workplace, that we forgot to book the coach tickets. Only 10 days before the trip did we realize this and hurriedly go on the website of booking tickets online. It was midnight when we logged on to the website to check the availability of tickets and quickly noticed that there were only 2 seats left on the coach. Without any hesitation, I filled in all the required information to finish the booking procedure. But if we could not manage to pay for the tickets in time, the booking procedure would be cancelled and there might be someone else taking those 2 tickets before us. Luckily, there was another kind of payment, which was via online banking. I quickly logged on to my internet-banking account and succeeded in transferring the money within about 1 minute. We both breathed a sigh of relief after receiving the email of confirmation for the booking. Thanks to the advancement of the Internet, everything turns out to be so fast and convenient.

One of the most effective ways to teach the elderly to use new technology is to leave alone more complicated issues and just teach them the ABC’s of technology. If you try to teach them something complicated, all of your words could be forgotten after a day. 4. What can people use the Internet for? Well, I know many youngsters just simply spend hours surfing online out of curiosity, which would definitely be a waste of time. However, there are also people making use of it wisely for learning, working or even entertaining. 5. What is the most popular technological product in your country? I guess it is the computer, simply because this technological device serves as a very helpful tool for us to seek information without having to go to the library and spend hours with a pile of books. I would like to tell you the story about the time I had some technical problems with my mother’s phone. I cannot remember exactly when it happened, probably a couple of years back when I was still a high-school student. Anyway, back in the day, smart phones were not as popular as they are now, and owning one was actually something to be jealous of. On my mom’s birthday that year, my dad surprised her with a brand-new iPhone 4, which was one of the most advanced technological devices on the market at the time. Although I knew it was mom’s, I just loved it so much, all I wanted to do was bring it to school to show my friends. Then one day, I made up an excuse that I needed her phone for some project at school and she actually believed me. I remember the next morning; I couldn’t help smiling all the way to school with the phone in my pocket. Needless to say how much my friends adored it, and for me, I just loved being the center of attention. As we were playing with the phone, testing all of its functions out of curiosity, my teacher walked in, which took me by surprise. Next thing I know, my mom’s phone slipped out of my hand and fell onto the hard floor. My heart missed a beat as I picked it up, there was no screen crack but the flash-light just kept flashing non-stop. I even tried to dismantle the phone to repair it, but I definitely didn’t succeed. I thought to myself: “That’s it, this is the end of the world for me.” Later that day, I brought the phone home and confessed with my mom. She was furious with me. But it turned out that all I had to do was hit the reset button! This is one of the memories that I could never forget.

This topic reminds me of an experience when I taught my grandma how to use her newly-bought smartphone. More or less 3 months ago, after my nerve-racking exam season, I was in desperate need of a short break. That’s why I decided to go back to my hometown to visit my granny, who is around 80 years old now, and she’s also my best friend. The day I arrived at her house, I saw her struggling with her brand new Iphone. She’s been long known as a technophobe, so I doubt that she could know how to use such a sophisticated gadget. You know, the elderly didn’t have any exposure to technological devices when they were young like us, so this was a big challenge for her. Therefore, I set aside complicated things and patiently taught my granny The ABC’s of technology. I told her to jot down every single thing I taught her, such as how to swipe the screen to find her favorite applications, or how to zoom in on an image with two fingers. She wasn’t a very quick learner, though. It’s quite obvious, as I believe the aging process is doing its job, so I keep repeating everything to her and try not to lose my temper. Well I am also proud to say that I am a self-possessed individual, so after 2 months, she nailed it. In my opinion, Tay Ninh is the most interesting part of my country. This is also my hometown, located in the southeast of Vietnam which is a mountainous area with lots fascinating things to mention. You know, the landscape in Tay Ninh is dominated by mountains, with the most popular being Black Virgin Mount which attracts thousands of people annually. On the summit of this mountain lies a pagoda where visitors come to seek inner peace and make wishes. My parents and I also come here at the time of Lunar New Year as this is a family tradition. There are also nice valleys which are quite off the beaten track and also famous among local people like us. I used to have an overnight picnic here. It’s fantastic to put up a tent and build a campfire to enjoy a night in wildlife, which is a great way to kick back and get closer to nature. We can see fireflies and other beautiful animals which can hardly be seen in HCMC as they seem to have died out in cities. Another interesting feature of this city is the specialties. Whenever tourists set foot in Tay Ninh, they always insist to taste rice paper, a delicious dish made from rice and served in daily meals to the locals. There are many variations of rice paper, it can be eaten like a snack, an appetizer or a side dish. Overall, despite being poor and underdeveloped, Tay Ninh is a mesmerizing part of my country.

The sad thing was that we could easily see there weren’t many trees on the side of the mountain. I guess people tried to develop tourism at the expense of the environment. Trees were felled to build cable cars for tourists to reach the pagoda. After 3 hours’ in the car, we made it. That was the first time I set foot in this city. It was very clean and tranquil, unlike my hometown where streets are littered with garbage. So, after we got out of the car, we put up a tent and built a campfire at the foot of the mountain. Luckily, I wasn’t carsick, so I felt quite good during that 2-day trip.

There was a trip in the past when I actually got completely bored. It was a vacation a year ago, after my stressful probationary period at my current company. At that time, I really needed to break the wheel of monotony in my everyday life and rejuvenate myself. So my buddies and I decided to take a trip to Dalat city to kick back. We made a lot of plans, most of which, unfortunately didn’t go as expected. As soon as I set foot in Dalat city, it started pouring rain outside. The weather was freezing, while dark clouds covered up the morning sky. Lightning flashed and thunder roared continually near the horizon, discouraging every holidaymaker from doing anything outdoors. So, we resorted to staying indoors and sitting by the window, watching the raindrops falling outside. It was a terrible moment for me. All of my companions were falling asleep after the 5 hours’ journey in the car. I was the only one awake in the room then, waiting for the rain to stop and having nobody at all to talk with. I felt terribly bored because I expected to visit many mesmerizing destinations and try the local cuisine, but the rain didn’t let up until 1PM that day. I lost half of the day due to the storm, so in the future, I will avoid the rainy season when travelling, or at least, have a look at the weather forecast before embarking on a trip somewhere.

I am going to talk about an interesting place in my home city of Leeds, England. The place has a huge secluded garden, hundreds of years old, nestled in the heart of a busy city. I often go there alone in the evening, or at the weekend with my friends. The garden is surrounded by a large stone wall that prevents entry to the grounds. There are two gaps in this wall where you can enter or exit. Once inside you will become immersed in the feeling of being somewhere else, as if you have entered another world entirely away from the city. This is a great way for those who have itchy feet to briefly satisfy their thirst for travel in a way that doesn’t cost any money. Most of the garden consists of a small valley with well-trodden paths carved into the terrain. Most visitors spend their time walking along these winding paths, admiring the ancient trees, colorful flower blossoms and breathtaking scenery. There are also tennis courts that people can play on, when the weather is suitable. I think that the main reason very few people go here is because it is not a well-known destination. It is mostly visited by locals or long-term residents of the city. I like this because it creates an atmosphere of peace and tranquility.

Ok, so the place that I would recommend any foreign tourist to visit in Vietnam is Hoi An. Hoi An is located right on the coast in central Vietnam, about a 45-minute drive south of Da Nang. There are a few different ways that you can travel there but I think the most convenient way is to fly to Da Nang airport and then catch a taxi to Hoi An. So, there’s a bunch of things to do in and around Hoi An. For example, you can take a stroll through the ancient town, which is situated along the river, and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or take a nice leisurely bicycle ride through the surrounding tranquil countryside and admire the breathtaking scenery. And if you’ve got a thirst for shopping, then the old town is just the place for you. Here you can find just about anything you want, from wonderful handicraft souvenirs, to clothing, books, gifts and more. So, I think there’s a number of reasons as to why it’s a good place for foreign tourists. Hoi An was once a busy trading port in the 15th to 19th centuries, so it has quite a unique culture and history. Secondly, the food in Hoi An is also quite unique and also very delicious, and I think most foreign travelers would find it very appealing. And even though Hoi An can get quite busy during the peak tourist seasons, if you’re looking for a more secluded place, then you can take a short drive out to one of the nearby beaches, like An Bang beach. There’s also a good range of accommodation options to choose from, including many 4- and 5-star resorts stretching along the coast from Da Nang to Hoi An. But if your budget doesn’t quite stretch that far, then there are many other good quality, low-cost guesthouses to choose from. And lastly, I think Hoi An is the perfect escape for anyone on a business trip in Da Nang.

Let me tell you about the time I visited Namsan Tower, a famous tourist attraction in Seoul, Korea, and I took something really important home with me. I visited Seoul for a fortnight during the winter last year, with my mom and brother. Although we tried a lot of mouthwatering food and saw a lot of beautiful scenery, I was looking forward to the Namsan trip the most, in order to accomplish a secret mission. Namsan tower is famous for the ‘tree of love”, a designated area around the base of the tower where couples can publicly declare their eternal love by placing love locks. My girlfriend, who is a hopeless romantic and a huge K-drama fan, left there a pink, heart-shaped lovelock with our names on it a couple of months ago. My mission was to retrieve it and bring it back to her as a proof that we were meant to be. However, thousands of lovelocks of different shapes and sizes scattered around the “Tree of love” totally blew me away. My brother and I spent hours searching but there wasn’t a sliver of hope. We even had to video call my girlfriend to ask for more directions, but all of our effort was in vain. I gave up two hours later since the tower was closing and I ended up buying a new lock back home for my girl, unreluctantly bursting her bubble of a fairy tale love story. So the lovelock was really special to me just because of the funny story behind it.

Well, my family usually enjoys our dinner at home with simple and traditional dishes, but there was an occasion we had a very special meal together in a fancy restaurant. It was around 3 years ago when I was tied up in revision for my final examination. After that high-pressure time, I passed the exam with flying colors so my dad decided to ease my mind by taking the whole family to a Western restaurant and enjoying a cozy meal together. That kind of dinner was a little unusual to my family because we had never eaten in such a luxurious restaurant before, so my mother and I were very surprised. The French restaurant is located in downtown Ho Chi Minh City. Because it is situated in a well-trodden area, the restaurant welcomes hundreds of guests every night. The food therefore, wasn’t very budget-friendly. Actually, it cost my family an arm and a leg, which made this dinner even more special to me. Even though my dad doesn’t make a killing at work, he was still willing to take my mom and me to such a nice restaurant as a reward for my hard work. So I really appreciated him for that. I really enjoyed the dinner because it helped me to relieve everyday stress and chill out after all the long hard-working days I’d had. Besides, this unusual meal was also a very good chance for us to strengthen our family bond because we have all been so busy for such a long time. So today I’m going to tell you about the time I got up extremely early in the morning, it happened a few months ago when I went on a trip with my family. Well... I’ve got to be honest with you, I’m not an early bird, I always sleep in whenever I have the chance, and my job doesn’t require me to wake up early as well. That’s why I hardly ever get up before 7 AM. Anyway, back in January, when my family and I decided to take a trip to Singapore, I was really excited since I had never been to Singapore before and I had heard so many wonderful things about this country. While my mom took care of the hotel bookings, I was in charge of airplane tickets for the whole family. Unfortunately, all tickets were almost sold-out except for the 7AM flight, which meant we all had to wake up at 4AM in the morning! At first, I thought it was going to be so difficult since I’ve never had to wake up before sunrise. But to my surprise, on the day of the trip, I was the first one to get up, even before the alarm went off and had to wake everybody else up. I guess I was just so excited that even waking up early was not a challenge for a heavy sleeper like me! All in all, our trip went really well, everyone had a blast there. We travelled around the city, visited architectural masterpieces and met wonderful people. I also visited the tower’s obeservation deck and had a chance to marvel at the beautiful night sky of Singapore.

So today I would like to talk about Thanh Ha water park, which is a recently constructed facility and widely considered an architectural masterpiece in Hanoi. The water park used to be my all-time favorite spot as a child. I mean who can resist the fun of playing in the water? Therefore, last year I decided to visit Thanh Ha, a newly built water park located on the outskirts of Hanoi, to relive my childhood and I have to say that I was taken aback when I saw its modern amenities. The most exciting things in this designated area, to me, are definitetly the water slides. The feeling of sliding down from 15 to 20 meters at high speed and getting soaking wet is appealing to a thrill seeker like me. If you are not into physically-demanding activities, you can always choose to relax by letting yourself flow aimlessly on the lazy river. The food at the water park, which is normally great, will taste even better after two hours of water exercise.

The water park, in my opinion, is a great place for parents who have no idea where to take their children on a boiling 38-degree-or-above summers day. I mean, children can spend hours in the park without complaining and playing in the water, which is quite safe. Also, this place is a necessary replacement for the old Ho Tay water park, which is really outdated and in desperate need of renovation.

Today I would like to tell you about my ride last weekend when my bike broke down half the way home. It was such a bright and sunny day that I decided to take my 3-year-old bike out for a ride to enjoy the sights in the street. Unlike other scorching hot days, it was one of those rare summer days when the temperature was about 26 degrees Celsius, which was perfect for a nice ride around the city. I was fairly confident that my beloved bike would take me home safely as it still looked rather new and had been running flawlessly ever since. Following some of my favorite routes, I made my way to Ton Duc Thang Street, enjoying the picturesque views of the Sai Gon River and architectural masterpieces along the bank. The idyllic view completetly cheered me up and it is definitely one of the scenes I’ll never forget. The ride went well and smoothly until I set out to return home. While riding along a secondary road, I noticed that the chain of my bike suddenly fell off. I panicked for a while, before deciding to pull over in a park nearby. At that time, I got so sweaty as the temperature began to rise. Luckily enough, I came across a bike-repair shop on the pavement after just 10 minutes of walking. The repair was quick, so I did not have to wait for long under the harsh sun. It was a bit disappointing that the trip turned out to be a weary one, not as perfect as I expected. Another reason I was let me down was that my lovely bike broke down after only three years. I guess it needs to be maintained more frequently from now on. That’s all I want to say. Okay, I am going to talk about a part of my personality that I think is a positive thing about me. When I was a child, I was painfully shy and always stayed at home instead of going out and playing with other kids in the neighborhood. I didn’t go to school until I was 6 years old. Even then I wouldn’t have gone to school if my parents hadn’t encouraged me every single day. They said that it’d be a lot of fun making new friends and learning new things. The first few years of primary school didn’t quite pique my interest. I still kept things to myself and hardly talked to anybody else in my class. Then I met Gwen, who was a new student from a nearby school and had arranged to sit next to me. She’s new so it’s understandable why she didn’t communicate with other people, except me. At first, I didn’t care much, but after a few days, I felt like I could talk to her in a way that friends were supposed to talk to each other, something that I hadn’t experienced before. Then I became more open and started to communicate with my classmates and helped Gwen get to know the new school. She said that because I was a good listener, she found it safe and comfortable talking to me. I considered that a compliment and also an encouragement. I think being a good listener is a key to any relationships, not just friendship. If you are not willing to listen to other people, you can’t expect them to listen to and respect you. That’s all I want to say.

Today, I’ll tell you about my best friend, Tom, who encouraged and helped me a lot to achieve my goal. Talking about Tom, I first met this guy when I was in secondary school and we became best friends since then, because we share many things in common. Tom is a smart cookie and also has a good sense of humour. Since the day I got the result of the exam, I gradually became painfully shy and kept to myself. In those tough days, Tom was always beside me and encouraged me to see the bright side of the problem. He said that I was a real individual and there was no point in comparing myself with other people. That did motivate me a lot in achieving my goal. The following year, I took the exam again and this time, I managed to pass it with an impressive result. If it had not been for Tom, I probably couldn’t have achieved such a goal. That’s all I want to say.

The old person that I find interesting that I would like to tell you about is my grandma. Actually, she died a few years ago but she is still an inspiration for me. My grandma lived with our family under the same roof since I was born. There are many reasons why I think she was very interesting. Firstly, she grew up in Australia during a time when men and women did not have equal rights, especially in terms of salary, and she used to work in a leather factory and she knew that she was good at her job, better than a lot of the men in the factory. So one day, she demanded that her boss pay her the same wage as her male colleagues because she was better than a lot of them. This was a brave thing to do and her boss gave her a raise. I think this is a good example of her personality actually. She was an honest and fair person, she worked hard and she expected to be paid fairly. She always really loved to live in old houses in the countryside and filled them with all sorts of antiques and lots of interesting gadgets, so it was quite fascinating for me and my brothers to visit her house when we were young. Secondly, my grandmother was a real individual. She loved to play video games even when she was 60 years old, and she used to ride a big motorcycle and she had some tattoos on her arms, which was very uncommon for a woman of her age. But my brothers and I thought she was really cool. She was a very good listener as well. She always knew the right thing to say when people turned to her for advice. And because of these things, my grandmother is someone I really admired.

I consider my relationships with my friends and family to be one of the most important things in my life. They are the people that I spend so much of my time with, so I really value and cherish all of those moments because you never know what might happen in the future. Well, the person I’d like to talk to you about is a very good friend of mine, Mai. She must be one of the nicest and most down-to-earth individuals I know. We have been friends for a really long time. If I were to describe how she looks I would say Mai is a very gorgeous and charming girl who always attracts a lot of attention from men. She is much taller than me so it’s kind of embarrassing standing next to her to be honest. Mai also has straight brown hair and deep, dark brown eyes. Like most teenagers, she pays a lot of attention to her appearance and likes dressing in the latest and most snazzy fashion. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her in a plain old T- shirt or jeans. Anyway, we’ve basically known each other since forever because we were in the same class from high school through to college. You know, the first time I met her, she left a deep impression on me because on the first day at school, I got lost while trying to find my classroom and she was my saviour. Coincidently, we were arranged by the teacher to become desk-mates. And with regards to why she became my bestie, well, I guess the main reason is that we really got on well right from the start, and we also see eye to eye on a lot of things such as fashion, sport and even video games. She is my closest friend so I feel like we can share everything together, from schoolwork to our love lives. The thing I admire most about Mai is that she is really protective and likes to look after people. As any normal human being, however, Mai also has her shortcomings. She’s never on time, and is sometimes quite absent-minded and inconsiderate and that makes people think she never takes things seriously. But I don’t think this is true. She has a strong sense of responsibility and I know that I can always rely on her. I truly enjoy her company and I am proud to say that I have such a loyal and helpful friend – she’s really one in a million.

I got to know him when we were at high school. We got on quite well with each other as we had a lot in common. Even though sometimes I fell out with him, we could soon kiss and make up and everything would be back to normal again. While I was doing really badly at Physics, he was considered as the most intelligent student in this subject at my school. He always stood first in all of the exams and no other student could come close to him. Every time the teacher asked us to solve a Physics question, it never took him more than 3 minutes to do the task. Not only did he perform well in Physics but he also did brilliantly at other science subjects. This was why he could get a scholarship to study at a University of Science in America. We have still kept in touch with each other and I’m sure we will never drift apart. I am so proud to have such an intelligent friend like Hoang. That is all I want to share.

These days it seems like there are so many important choices and life changing decisions(1) that we have to make, but one of the toughest choices(2) that I’ve had to make so far was the decision of what career path I should follow. And then, to make matters worse, my second choice, which was Construction Management, was being cancelled the following year, so I then had to rethink my choice again! So, after weighing up the options and turning to my parents and career guidance counsellor at school for advice, I chose to study Civil Engineering, as it just seemed like the wisest decision after my other two choices were not possible. So, the following year I went off to university and began studying Civil Engineering, however, after my first year of studying I began to have second thoughts, so I then decided to change my course, to Electrical Engineering. I then went on to finish that course, however many years later I did feel some regret towards that decision, as ultimately what I wanted to study was related to building design and construction.

You know, as soon as I graduated from high school, I threw a big party to celebrate this significant achievement. That was one of the toughest times I’d been through because I had to pull a bunch of all-nighters over many months to revise for my graduation exams. I looked like a panda with dark circles around my eyes, and my hair went gray. My parents, seeing me like this, were very worried and they never ceased to encourage me to keep moving forward. Besides, I need to choose which university to enroll in. You know, when I was young and freshly graduated from high school, it really wasn’t easy to think about what job I wanted to do for the rest of my life, and I definitely didn’t just want to make a snap decision. However, I felt that I needed to make a wise decision choosing the university I would study at, so I turned to people I trusted for advice and decided to choose FTU – one of the top notch universities in my country. In the end, I did it. I mean, I passed the university entrance exam. Needless to say, my parents were over the moon. They wanted to announce to the world that I finally graduated from FTU, one of the most prestigious universities in my city. Personally, besides feeling happy and proud of myself, I was also grateful for their love and care, so I decided to use my savings to hold a BBQ in my own backyard. The day the party took place, nearly one hundred guests came, many of them showed up early to help me prepare the food and drinks. When I look back on my teenage years, I can distinctly remember many memorable moments that I shared with my friends when we went on our school trip in the summer time. If my memory serves me right, we had experienced a short trip to Vung Tau city which is a coastal area located in the Southern part of Vietnam and kinda close to HCM city. It was such an incredibly exciting time for me and my group of friends, especially when we packed our bags to get ready to go on the road trip. We went shopping together and bought the same parody T-shirt. You know, at that time, we had just finished our final exams and had been through a stressful time. So this trip was the great event that helped us ease our mind and unwind a bit. Talking about what we did during the trip, I have to say that I only had vague memories of being extremely uncomfortable sitting in the back seat of the car for two hours, and I had experienced a roller coaster of emotions as we had so much fun. We also had a full collection of our silly pictures. Another unforgettable experience that I can recall from that trip is when we all gathered up in front of the campfire and shared our feelings about each other. I almost burst into tears when remembering about all of our high school memories. I could remember every single thing we had talked about on that night. That’s why this is one of the most memorable occasions I’ve ever experienced.

Ok, so about three years ago I was travelling in Asia, and at the time I had just spent about two weeks visiting some friends in Hong Kong, and I was preparing to leave to cross the border to China on this particular day. So I was staying in my friend’s apartment in the city and he had gone to work, so I spent the morning packing my luggage. Then I had to travel into the city-center to meet my friend to give him back the key to his apartment before I caught the train to the Chinese border, however on my way into the city-center on the subway, the thought occurred to me to double-check that I had my passport and my money. Normally I didn’t carry large sums of money with me when travelling, however for a particular reason I was carrying more than $1000 in cash with me at that time. But when I checked my bag I couldn’t find the money anywhere. I immediately freaked out because I didn’t want to lose all that money, and I had also just had my iPhone pickpocketed a week before when I had just arrived in Hong Kong, so I thought I was really having a streak of bad-luck! So after getting off the subway and rummaging through all my belongings, I still couldn’t find the cash, so I decided to get back on the subway again and head back to my friend’s apartment as I thought maybe I had left the money there somewhere. So, about an hour later back at his apartment with butterflies in my stomach, I still couldn’t find the money, and my mind was completely blank about what I had done with it, and then the thought struck me. I distinctly remembered that I had hidden it in a small side pocket of my toiletry bag when I was packing late the night before. I was so tired that night when I was packing that I completely forgot that I had hidden it there. So after finding the money my mind was put at ease, and I went back to meet my friend and continued on my way to China, though now I was really cutting it fine to make it there in time to catch the train that I had booked. This was definitely an unforgettable experience; I really experienced a roller coaster of emotions that day.

Today, I’m going to tell you about a time when I bought clothes online and had a good experience. That’s why I hit the mall on a very regular basis. One day, while shopping around the Gucci store in Ho Chi Minh City, I came across a pair of sneakers that looked absolutely chic. Unfortunately, my size was out of stock, so the shop assistant advised me to order online through Gucci’s website. You know, the price of those shoes is exobitantly high, but I really wanted to purchase them as a reward to myself after a long year of hard work. Therefore, I decided to order them online. Firstly, I sent the e-mail to ask for the item’s availability in other chain stores. Then, the customer care officer replied to my e-mail immediately and sent me the very detailed guidance on how to purchase their out-of-stock items. She also helped me through all of the ordering steps and informed me when I would receive the sneakers. Last but not least, I was pleased with fast delivery since it only took 2 days to ship the package to my home. When I opened the box, there was a bunch of vouchers and she explained that those vouchers were their gift because I had spent so much time waiting for them. The things that made me satisfied is not only their way of customer service but also the high quality of the product regardless of online or offline shopping. All in all, that was a time when I did online shopping and had a good experience. Now I always prefer to do shopping through the Gucci website.

So, today I’m going to talk about my absolute favorite clothing accessory, which is my scarf. A couple of years ago, while I was doing some window shopping, I saw a scarf with an extremely reasonable price of 60,000 VND. The place I bought it from was a small handicraft shop at a really famous temple in Saigon. In that shop they made lots of different types of clothing by hand and with old fashioned sewing machines. The shop assistant there was really nice and friendly. She didn’t try to give me the hard sell at all. That’s why I bought it without a second thought. As for how often I wear it, I wear this scarf almost everywhere. In winter, it can help keep my neck warm, while in summer it can help protect my neck from the scorching rays of the sun when I’m driving on my motorbike to work. The scarf is red and black with a checkered pattern and is made of 80% cotton and 20% polyester. It’s durable too because I’ve had it for two years now and it still feels soft and comfortable to wear as well. One more thing is that the red and black matches with some of my clothes, so it suits me well. There are obviously a few reasons it becomes my must-have item. 1. Do young people in your country like to save money? To have a comfortable life in the future, probably even after retirement, a lot of young people in my country like to build a nest egg. However, the problem is that most of them do not really know how to save money partly because the education they receive at home or school does not help them with their money management. 2. Do you consider yourself to be good at managing your money? I guess I would say that I am ok at managing my money. I usually try to set aside some money from my salary each month, and I definitely try to avoid squandering it, or buying things that are a waste of money. I’m usually pretty careful with my money. 3. Are street markets common in Vietnam? Yes. Street markets and supermarkets coexist in Vietnam because people prefer to have more than one option for grocery shopping. Street markets offer a variety of products from food to clothing. Most of the goods here are dirt-cheap, which are suitable for people who are on a tight budget. 4. How often do you buy shoes? To be honest, I am broke now so I avoid shopping as much as I can. I guess I shop for new shoes only when my previous ones are torn. 5. What is the latest plan you’re making? A specific plan, you mean? I am making a travel plan for my trip to Thailand. I must calculate living expenses, note down metro numbers and pack food and clothes in advance.

1. Is money important to you? Yes. I mean money is absolutely important not just to me but to anyone. Without money, we can’t buy things that we want, be it for work or personal purposes. 2. Is it important for parents to teach children how to save money? Yes absolutely! In Vietnam particularly, children do not receive any financial education at school so they usually lack finance management skills after they leave school. However, such skills are of paramount importance in their future life; so parents should pay more attention to this subject and spend time teaching their kids how to save money. 3. Do you think parents should give pocket money to their kids? Yes and No. I mean it depends on both the parents and the kids. If the parents are too busy to take their kids out for lunch during school breaks, then they should give their kids some money. However, for young kids, parents should only give them a fairly small amount of pocketmoney. 4. What do people in your country save money for? Some people save money to buy stuff that they want and that helps them with their study or work, for example a laptop or a smart phone. And some other people save money to buy houses or to have a financially comfortable retirement. 5. Why do people care too much about money? I suppose because many people think that money equals power. The more money you have, the more influence you have over people.

I am going to talk about a clock necklace that I gave my best friend, Julie. It was at the end of grade 10 that she left me to continue her study abroad. For fear that I would be forgotten someday, I tried to think of a farewell gift that could make her think of me every time she saw it. It was not an easy task to find the right present; maybe it was because I was being too picky. She was more than a friend to me, she’s more like my sister, or my soul mate. I didn’t want to waste my money on something meaningful but useless, or something useful but emotionally empty. I wanted something that was special, something that would make her say “wow” when she received it. I wandered from shop to shop to look for something, but I didn't know what. One day, I came across something reminding me of her right away - a vintage necklace with a clock pendant. It perfectly suited her style, so she could wear it with any of her clothes. What I liked about the clock was that it was custom-made, I could design the number and write a message on it too. The thing is, when giving her the necklace, I set the clock to the local time in Vietnam, so whenever she needed to tell the time she would feel annoyed because of the difference in time zones, and I hoped that she would think of me right at that moment. The only thing was that it cost an arm and a leg for a student like me to buy. I had to skip breakfast for an entire month to purchase it, but it was totally worth it. She had no clue about how I bought it but she liked it anyway. I felt exhilarated when I could buy my bestie something beautiful that she deserved, and I hoped that this chain would tie us together forever.

When talking about a way to saving money effectively, I have to admit that I have very limited skills in personal money management. I find that saving money is difficult for me as I always tend to buy things without considering carefully, especially on payday. I usually overspend and am out of money at the end of every month. However, being a freshman and majoring in graphic designer, I have to buy a laptop to serve my educational purpose. Honestly, I’ve always dreamed of having a Macbook Pro which is useful for my future career. Besides, I have to be extremely careful before taking the plunge when it comes to shopping for stuff. Sometimes I do ask my mother to keep money for me as she is good at controlling expenses. You know, she is the most financially savvy person in my family. Well, this works wonders with me as my savings goes up significantly every month. Now I always ask myself whether it’s necessary to buy things or if I can save it for a rainy day. After a short time trying to save money like that, I find that I have an amount of money which is enough for me to afford a new Macbook Pro. And I think that I will maintain those saving habits to build a nest egg for the future. That’s all I want to share.

Alright I am going to share with you my dream house. Two years ago, during the winter break of my college sophomore year, I spent three weeks with my uncle’s family in Philadelphia. On New Year’s Eve, my uncle took me to a party hosted by Mr. Thompson, one of his friends who, according to my uncle, is ridiculously rich. And he was not joking. Anyway, not until halfway through the trip did I realize I was far away from urban area and when I questioned my uncle, he replied: “yeah we’re going to Atlantic City, it’s a beach house”. But it was not a house. It was a mansion! The enormous construction, which had a stunning view over the Atlantic Ocean, looked like a palace on the outside. Inside the house was just an architectural masterpiece. You see, all the decorations had a beach theme ranging from the blue shell-shaped toothbrush holder to the white sand carpet. Although there were four guest bedrooms on the ground floor, I chose to spend that night on the carpet. On the second floor lay a massive balcony looking towards the beautiful sea where we welcomed the New Year together with a glass of champagne. At that moment of luxury, I made a promise to myself: “this will be my house in the future.” To achieve this goal, recently I have adopted a method that helps me save money much more effectively, which is setting aside a portion of my earnings and putting the money in my piggy bank.
