Plans obtained from cable/ pipe owners, local authorities or private landowners. However, it should not be assumed that these are accurate. Located services identified, i.e. gas, electricity etc, and indicated clearly by using waterproof paint on roads, or wooden pegs on open ground Before digging by the services identified, the safe digging distance from existing pipe work should be confirmed with the relevant service owner, especially in the case of gas. Mechanic digging prohibited within 0.5m of any buried service. Manual digging to be performed within 0,5m of any buried service. Spades/shovels to be used, not picks or power tools, and horizontal digging used to locate the exact position of a cable to avoid fracturing it Assume that all services are "live" until proved otherwise When it is necessary to work outside of daylight hours, tower lights or other means to ensure proper vision for operators and banks men must be in place.

All excavations over 1.25 meters in depth needs to be sloped/battered back. Spoil needs to be kept at least 1 meter back from the excavation edge. All excavations should have a temporary walkway cut into the bank itself. Where this does not exist, a ladder should be used for access and egress.
