1. ONE EXCEPTIONAL CARD -q^irect and effective as an interactive trick, this can be performed for one person, or many people at the «^same time. The spectator only needs five playing cards in her hand—any cards.
I wantyou to take those cards inyour hand. Five playing cards. Turn themface-up, and shuffle them by moving twofrom theface to the back, and then another two, or three, and then another two or three, cutting themfrom thefront to the back. Just keep mixing them that way... And in a second, I’m going to haveyou ... Stop! Stop right there! Look down atyour hands and
notice the card that’s staring back atyou. You may think thatyou arrived at that card at random. But in almost any group ofcards, there’s one exceptional card who
uses every opportunity to elbow his wayforward, to make himselfprominent. You probably know people like that. Somehow, that card managed to exert a slight influence, asyou shuffled. You see the card who managed to make it to the top. Ofcourse, ifyou make an effort, you can always shuffle it away again. Beforeyou do that, I wantyou to think ofa number
less than five. Do you have it? Don’t tell me, but I wantyou to remember that number. I wantyou to take the cards, and
just push off that number of cards, from the top, and cut that number of cards to the back of the packet. That will hide the
exceptional card, and I have no idea whereyou put him. Have you done that? Good. Remember that number. Because now I’m going to have you turn that packetface-down, so
you can’t see any of the cards. And I wantyou to cut three cards off the top, just push them off the top, and cut them to the bottom. Good. And then make another cut, with just one card. Push it offfrom the top and cut it to the bottom. And now, so thatyou get to have the last move, I wantyou to cut off the same number of cards thatyou did before. Just slide them off the top and cut them to the bottom.
Square up the cards, face-down. I toldyou that card was probably exceptional. That means it takes every opportunity to
get to the top. Although the cards areface-down, turn over the top card andyou’ll see exactly what that card can do.
