Work in pairs. Discuss the questions. 1 What is your favourite city/town/neighbourhood? Why? 2 Which places in your city/town would you recommend to a visitor? 3 Are there any unusual places or landmarks in your city/town?

2 a Read the text and label the photos with the places it mentions.

Old spaces, new places In many cities across the world, communities are taking over forgotten urban areas and making them into public spaces for the people who live there. One famous example of this is the High Line in New York City, a public park which is built on an old elevated railway line. Trains used to transport goods like meat and dairy products on this line from one side of New York to another, but the railway closed in the 1980s and the structure was going to be demolished. However, some local citizens started a group called Friends of the High Line and successfully campaigned to save it. They were inspired by the wild flowers growing on the unused railway line and decided to transform it into a community park and garden. Today, the mile and a half High Line park has more than 500 types of plants and trees in it, as well as artworks and live performances, and is a popular place for both locals and tourists to visit.

B

In London, there are many community gardens in unused industrial areas. One of these gardens is Nomadic Gardens in the East End which was created on a small wasteland between two railway tracks. There are now a hundred allotments (plots of land that people can rent to grow vegetables), bees and beekeepers, a cafe, a theatre and a bicycle repair shop! There is lots of art to look at in the gardens, including sculptures and other artworks made from recycled materials as well as a huge mural painted by local graffiti artists. A team of volunteers look after the gardens by watering the plants, painting the buildings, cleaning the social areas and making sure the gardens stay a pleasant place for both the local community and visitors.

People could volunteer to teach their skills or things that they know lots about. B: That’s a good idea. And the people who go to the classes can pay as much as they can for the classes and the money can be used for things in the school.
