Stupid red and Ted were not very smart. They were always getting things wrong. The only work they could get was digging holes and painting. They were easy jobs but Fred and Ted still made mistakes. They dug holes
in the wrong places, or painted things the wrong color. Once they painted a floor and then walked on it while the paint was still wet. One day their boss asked them to paint a flagpole outside the office building. "This shouldn't be too difficult for them to do," their boss thought. "A11 they need is paint and brushes." Their boss told them where the paint and brushes were and went away. An hour later he came back. Fred and Ted were not painting the flagpole. They didn't even have the paint and brushes. Fred was standing against the flagpole and Ted was standing on his shoulders, trying to reach the top of it with a ruler. "What are you two men doing?" their boss asked. "We have to find out how much paint we need," Ted said, "so we're measuring the flagpole." "That's not the way to do it," their boss said. "Pull the flagpole out of the ground, and lay it down. "Ha!" Fred said, "We're not stupid. We can't measure how high it is that way. We can only measure how long it is."

When I Was Your Age ome parents are always comparing their children with themselves when they were
young. or with other people when they were children.
"When I was your age," a father said to his sixteen-year-old son one day,
"I
was at the top of my class
every year. And I knew what I wanted to do when I left school.I had goals. You are always at the bottom
of your class, and you have no goals." The man's son said nothing. He had heard this from his father many times.
"And when your mother was your age," the young man's father went on, "she had a good job and she was earning money. You don't even have a part-time job. You earn nothing." The man's son still said nothing. He had heard this before, too.
"And when your older brother was your age," the young man's father went on, "he studied hard. You just waste your time." And the man's son still said nothing. Finally, the young man's father said, "And when Abraham Lincoln was your age, he worked all day and studied at night."
This time the son could not stay silent. "And when Abraham Lincoln was your age, father," he said. "He was the President of the United States. What are vou?"
His father had no answer to this.

; lttot My Fault here was once a
small boy who always had an excuse whenever he did
something wrong. Nothing was ever his fault.
If he spilt
some milk, his
mother would scold him for being careless. He would say,
"It wasn't my fault,
Mom. The milk jumped out of my glass." If he walked into a pole as he was walking along the street, his mother would say,
"Look where you are going!" He would say, "It wasn't my fault, Mommy, the pole moved." If he got up late in the morning, his mother would say, "You're late!" He would say, "It wasn't my fault, Mom. The sun was late." Sometimes his excuses were funny because what he did was not important. Sometimes, however, they were not funny because what he did was bad.
One day, his mother heard a crash. She ran to find out what the problem was and found her best vase lying in tiny pieces at the bottom of the stairs. The little boy was standing at the top of the stairs. "Did you push my vase down the stairs?" she shouted at him.
"It wasn't my fault,"
the boy said.
"It
was the vase's fault.
only pushed it down one step. It fell the rest of the way."
