The 60th ARD Music Competition 2011 in Munich is open for the following categories:

The 60th ARD International Music Competition in Munich – 2011 – is presented by the Association of Public Broadcasting Corporations in the Federal Republic of Germany (ARD).

Oboe Trumpet Piano Organ The invitation to participate in this competition is extended to young musicians, who are ready to launch an international career. The competition is open to musicians of all nations born between 1982 and 1994, for category organ born between 1979 and 1994. The competition will be conducted during the period from August 29 to September 16, 2011 (including the prize winners’ concerts). The auditions are open to the public.

Special Prizes for the Best Interpretation of a Commissioned Composition Special prizes totaling c 4,000 for the best interpretation of the individual commissioned compositions, made possible by the Alice Rosner Foundation, will be awarded in the category: – Oboe for the composition by Liza Lim in the amount of c 1,000. – Trumpet for the composition by Mark Andre in the amount of c 1,000. – Piano for the composition by Lera Auerbach in the amount of c 1,000. – Organ for the composition by Naji Hakim in the amount of c 1,000. Special Prize from the Munich Chamber Orchestra The Special Prize from the Munich Chamber Orchestra totaling c 1,000 will be awarded by the members of the Munich Chamber Orchestra for an outstanding interpretation by a semi-finalist in the categories oboe, trumpet or piano. Special BR-KLASSIK Prize The BR-KLASSIK program division of Bayerischer Rundfunk will be presenting the Special BR-KLASSIK Prize in the amount of c 1,000 for an outstanding performance. Special Prize U21 The Special Prize U21 totaling c 2,000, underwritten by the Dr. Marianne Kunkel Fund will be awarded by the BR-KLASSIK young people’s program “U21 – Your Program. Your Music” for an outstanding performance by a participant under the age of 21.

4 Alice Rosner Prize The Alice Rosner Foundation awards the Alice Rosner Prize in the amount of c 1,000 for the best interpretation of a 20th century work. Osnabrück Music Prize The Osnabrück Music Prize, made possible by the Werner Egerland Foundation, in the amount of c 7,500 is awarded to a finalist in the categories trumpet or piano. It is linked to a concert with the Osnabrück Symphony in February 2012. Busch Brothers Prize The Busch Brothers Circle awards the Busch Brothers Prize in the amount of c 3,000 – in collaboration with the South Westphalian Philharmonic – to an out­standing finalist in the category oboe or trumpet. It is linked to a concert appearance at the Busch Brothers Circle and potential subsequent concerts with the South West­ phalian Philharmonic. ifp Music Prize The special prize from ifp in Cologne in the amount of c 3,000 is awarded for outstanding achievement in the category Oboe. Special Prize from Freunde Junger Musiker, München e. V. Freunde Junger Musiker, München e. V. will award a ­Special Prize for an outstanding performance by a young soloist, who at least reached the Semifinal. The prize in amount of c 2,500 is linked to a ­chamber concert in Munich. Further engagements can be announced from other Associations of the Freunde ­Junger Musiker in Berlin, Bremen, Frankfurt/Main, Kassel, Köln, Bonn, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Meerbusch and Düsseldorf.

Special Prize from Schwarzwald Musikfestival The Schwarzwald Musikfestival will present a special prize in the amount of c 1,500 to an outstanding finalist in the category piano. It is linked to a concert in the series “Junge Elite” in collaboration with the Hotel Bareiss, in the Christuskirche zu Mitteltal between April and September 2012. Application The following documentation should be enclosed: – application form – for the pre-selection, a personally recorded CD: the CD may not be edited, may not be processed and may not be older than one year (the works required for the pre-selection can be found in the repertoire conditions). – two recommendations from prominent musical personalities – in the case of students, the approval of the teacher – an artistic curriculum vitæ – a portrait photograph of the applicant, which will appear in the competition program, black & white or color (also in TIFF format, minimum 300 dpi, can be sent digitally) Admission Once the selection has been made, the decision of the pre-selection jury, made up of members of the compe­ tition jury along with the artistic director, on admission to the competition will be released by June 15, 2011 at the latest. Its decisions are final and incontestable. No explanations will be provided. The chosen competitors will receive written notifi­ cation of their selection. Competitors from abroad can, if necessary, use this confirmation to apply for an entry visa.

8 Recognition of Conditions By his or her signature on the application form, the ­participant acknowledges acceptance of the participation and competition conditions as well as the decision of the pre-selection jury and the competition jury as binding. There is no right of appeal. Participation is only possible in one of the competition categories. Applications that do not meet the requirements of the competition can be rejected. Submitted documents and sound recordings cannot be returned. Participation Fee Following receipt of the admission confirmation, the ­participation fee of c 100 must be transferred “free of bank charges for the recipient” at the latest by July 30, 2011. Should the competitor be prevented from attending, or should he or she cancel his or her participation, this participation fee cannot be refunded.

Jury The jury will be selected from among personalities with international reputations without regard to ethnic, ideological, political or linguistic considerations. The decisions of the jury cannot be contested.

Competition Rounds Four competition rounds are obligatory in the categories oboe, trumpet and piano, three competition rounds in the category organ. The semi-finals for oboe, trumpet and piano will be accompanied by the Munich Chamber Orchestra without conductor. A maximum of six instrumentalists per ­category will be admitted to the semi-finals. The final round will be accompanied by an orchestra with conductor, the Münchner Rundfunkorchester for the trumpet category and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks for the categories oboe, piano and organ. A maximum of four semi-finalists, six in the category organ, will be admitted to the final round. First Audition Date All participants will receive notification of the scheduled date and time of their first audition – along with the admission to the competition – in writing.

9 Competition Program The following repertoire lists and the conditions therein contained are binding for the competition program. The competition program submitted by the competitors is binding. Subsequent alterations are not permitted. No works in the competition program may be repeated except on the express wish of the jury. The sequence of performance is at the participant’s discretion. If possible, original text editions should be performed. Participants will not be allowed to perform their own compositions. In certain cases, the jury may allow only selections of individual works to be performed in the first two competition rounds, or may select works from the submitted repertoire. Piano Accompanists Official piano accompanists are available at no charge to the competitors. Each competitor will receive at least two rehearsals with the accompanist. Participants may bring along their personal accom­ panist at their own expense. Registration Assistant For all competitors in category organ registration assistants are available at no charge.

Accommodation

Presence of the Participant at the Competition Each participant has to register personally at the central competition office one day before the first audition and present his or her passport, ID card or officially recognized birth certificate, and should not leave Munich as long as he or she is an active participant in the competition without the express approval of the competition ­management (prize winners may first depart on September 17, 2011). Each participant accepts the obligation to remain free of all professional obligations or concerts throughout the duration of the competition.

Accommodation during the Competition For the duration of the first round, reasonably priced hotels will be recommended to the participants. All ­competitors who reach the second round will be provided by the competition management with the cost of ­accommodation and meals from this point for the duration of their further participation in the audition process. This does not apply to piano accompanists or other ­companions. All competitors who reach the semi-final will be guests of the competition until the prize winners’ concerts.

Awards Ceremony The awards ceremony will take place during a festive ­concert. Competitors will be expected to receive their awards in person at the concert. Prize Winners’ Concert At the Prize Winners’ Concerts, chamber music works and works for soloists with orchestral accompaniment will be performed. The decision regarding the program and at which concert specific participants will appear will be made by the competition management in conjunction with the jury and the music department of Bayerischer Rundfunk. Prize winners will receive no fee for their participation in the prize winners’ concerts.

11 Media Exploitation The competition, including the Prize Winners’ Concerts will be recorded by Bayerischer Rundfunk and the recordings will be made available for broadcast purposes (radio and television, including on-line) in whole or in part, for a live or later transmission. Other broadcasters at home and abroad can broadcast these recordings including the Prize Winners’ Concerts live or at a later time. Repeat broadcasts of these programs (in whole or in part) are possible. The competition management reserves the right to use selections from the competitions and prize winners’ ­concerts on a CD and/or DVD, which will serve to publicize the parti­cipants and document the competition. Beyond this, the competition management reserves the right to release and distribute or permit the distribution on its own or through third parties of contributions to the competition in sound form, on analogue and/ or digital sound or data media in any format or process, either commercially or non-commercially. The declaration of understanding on the part of the prize winners shall be considered given with the registration to participate in the competition: the same applies to transfer of broadcast rights in keeping with the aforementioned conditions. The prize winners have no claim to additional compensation.
