Pattern notes In this e-book I first show a pattern diagram, and then the instructions in American Standard Terms (You can see conversion table for British terms at the end of the e-book). After that you’ll find photo guides for how to assemble the flower. * I apologize for including copyright notices on diagrams - I have recently found too many cases of my patterns being shared, hopefully this will help. Thank you for understanding!
Materials note If you cannot find the right thread – I’m selling thread size #40 & #20 in my Etsy store. Its the same thread I used to make this flower. Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the thread or other materials. Link: https://www.etsy.com/shop/HappyPattyCrochet?section_id=17647078

The Ascocenda Inflorescence The Ascocenda Orchid Inflorescence is made of 3 distinct elements, each made in a different way - Flowers, Leaves (in 2 sizes) and the Roots.
Small Leaves
Flowers
Large Leaves
Roots
This document first includes patterns and instructions, followed by detailed photo guides for each element, and finally a guide to how to assemble the inflorescence. Before your start crocheting, I recommend going through the photo guides. Also, I highly recommend to iron and starch the petals and leaves before assembly (I’m using regular fabric starch).

Ascocenda Flower The Ascocenda flower is made of 6 elements (each with its own crochet pattern): Right Petal, Left Petal, Dorsal Sepal, Lateral Sepals, Lip & Column. Lateral Sepal
Lip
Column
Right Petal
Left Petal
Dorsal Sepal
Lateral Sepal
The petals and sepals are all crocheted in the round in a very similar fashion, after the diagram and patterns of the peals and sepals you can find a photo guide that will make the tricky parts clearer. The Lip is crocheted in a different technique, worked mainly in the rows, in a zig-zag motion - after the Lip’s diagram and instructions you can find a detailed photo guide for the whole process.

Step 1 - To achieve the look of the orchids in here, we’ll need to add a bit of darker orange on the edges of the elements
Step 2 - With a dark orange fabric dye (or a mixture of red and yellow colors) in a bit of water, add the color in light motions around the edge
Step 3 - Try to create a gradient making the edges darker orange then the inner part

Crocheting a Sepal The lateral and dorsal sepals are crocheted almost the same (only the last round is different). Moreover, they are crocheted in a similar fashion as the petals as well. The one major difference is that the Sepals are crocheted in separate rounds while the petals are crocheted in one continuous round. Step 1 - Similar to the petals, once you finish the first round - add the metal wire
Step 2 - Place it the same as the petals
Step 4 - As oppose to the petals, the bottom of the sepals are not crocheted around the metal wire, but the are crocheted so the metal wire is kept behind a Facebook Etsy

Ascocenda Lip The Ascocenda lip is made is the element in the middle of the flower. Its crocheted in 5 steps - First we crochet the core of the Lip, followed by the right “wing” and the left “wing” to make a heart shaped element. Next (step #4) we fold the heart and crochet the edges of the core section. Lastly (Step #5), we crochet the “landing platform”, which is worked between both wings.

Single Flower Assembly Once all elements of a flower are crocheted (see photo to the right), its time to bring them all together. To assemble the flower you’ll need Hot Glue, tweezers, scissors, floral tape in white color and a clear adhesive. First, add the sepals together followed by the petals. We then, add the Lip and the Column in the middle, and finally, if needed, add some color.
Step 1 - Flower elements, Dorsal Sepal, 2 Lateral Sepals, Left & Right Petal, Lip and a Column
Step 2 - Prepare all sepals and petals by folding the base in 90 degrees
Step 3 - Start by holding all sepals together, placing the Dorsal and the top, and the Lateral on the sides, slightly pointing downwards
Step 4 - Glue all the sepals together by applying a bit of hot glue to where they touch in the back
Step 5 - Add the petals in front of the sepals, make sure to place the right and left petal in the correct place

Step 19 - Tightly wrap the wire tails with a white floral tape
Step 20 - Wrap it completely
Step 21 - Optionally, you can also wrap the stem with a thin cream colored thread, to add a bit of extra smoothness
Step 22 - To do so, apply a drop of clear adhesive to the base of the stem a Facebook Etsy

Ascocenda Leaf The Ascocenda leaf is thin and elongated, it is also slightly folded in the middle and bent outwards. The leaf is not crocheted, but we’re still going to use thread. To make the leaf, we first (step 1) going to cut a firm interfacing fabric using a leaf template (see here in the next pages) - then, we’ll (2, 3) glue a 2 metal wires to it, and (4, 5, 6) wrap it with a green thread (either size #20 or size #10). While we wrap the thread, we’ll occasionally add white glue to the interfacing to keep the thread in place. Once the interfacing is completely wrapped with the thread, iron and starch the leaf. Lastly, fold the leaf in the middle and slightly bend it outwards to finish the look.
Step 1 - The interfacing (already cut), with 2 green coated metal wires, each ~12”/30 cm long
Step 3 - And place them across the mid-section of the interfacing (no need to go all the way to the top) a Facebook Etsy
Ravelry
Step 2 - Add glue to the metal wires (I’m using clear adhesive)
Step 4 - Once the glue dried, the metal wires should be firmly fixed to the interfacing

Ascocenda Leaf (#2)
Step 5 - Add white glue to the interfacing (both sides), don’t cover the entire interfacing with white glue, as it will get dry - I recommend adding the white glue in 5 cm chunks, once a chunk is wrapped with thread, add glue to the next one.
Step 7 - And start wrapping around the interfacing, don’t wrap too tightly as it will fold the interfacing
Step 9 - as such ...

Step 6 - Add the thread to the interfacing
Step 8 - Wrap a section, and then slightly squeeze it against the interfacing to make is more firm
Step 10 - Continue to cover the entire interfacing. Once done, iron and starch the leaf, and the leaf is finished

Inflorescence Assembly To complete the Ascocenda Inflorescence, we need to bring all the elements together. In this example, I’m using 11 flowers and 9 leaves (2 small and 7 large). First, we’ll add all the flowers to a single ~16”/40cm thick metal wire (16”/18”). And then, we’ll move to the Leaves, adding a similar metal wire to each one, and attaching all wires together with floral tape.
Step 2 - Add the first flower to the top of the metal wire
Step 4 - Once the first flower is added ... a Facebook Etsy

Step 1 - Crochet Dorsal Sepal, 2 Lateral Sepals, Left & Right Petal, Lip and Column
Step 3 - Tightly wrap light green (or green) floral tape around to keep it in place.
Step 5 - Add the next flower, slightly below the first, and tightly wrap its stem with a floral tape

Inflorescence Assembly (#3)
Step 11 - Take a ~15”/40cm metal wire (16”/18”) and add a good amount of hot glue to the top
Step 12 - Stick it to the base of the leaf, and add floral tape around the area, then tightly fold the base to fix the wire in place
Step 13 - Next, take another leaf and add hot glue to its base
Step 14 - And glue it to the first leaf, positioning it in opposite direction, and in the same height
Step 15 - In the same fashion, continue adding more leaves, adding hot glue to the base, and pressing across the previous leaf, only lower now
Step 16 - Once the first 4 leaves are added. Next, we’ll add the flowers stem to the leaves

Adding the Roots (Optional) To give the inflorescence a final touch, I recommend adding the roots. To make the roots, we simply use hot glue and a bucket of water. Once the roots are made, we add color to them, and glue them to the inflorescence - there are no rules to how to arrange the roots, simply glue them one by one, you can pretty much randomly glue them, and they will end up looking quite natural!
Step 2 - Next, start adding hot glue to the tip of the stick
Step 4 - The deeper you insert the stick to the water, the longer the root you will get a Facebook Etsy
Ravelry
Step 1 - Prepare a bucket of cool water, and a wooden stick (I’m using the back of my brush here)
Step 3 - And slowly insert the stick to the water, keep pressing on the hot glue (keeping the glue gun above water!)
Step 5 - Once you think that the root is long enough, release the glue gun and take the stick out of the water

Page 51
Ascocenda Orchid
Adding the Roots (Optional) (#2)
Step 6 - Pull the root from the stick
Step 7 - And add color to it (the color depends on the inflorescence you are making, but green is a good bet)
Step 8 - Once the root is ready, continue to make as many roots as you think are enough (I kept playing with the hot glue in the water and ended up with too many :))
Step 9 - Once you finished preparing all the roots, start gluing them to the inflorescence - I went pretty wild here, I think it turned out pretty nice! a Facebook Etsy
