Chapter 12: Language and the Brain Neurolinguistics • The study of the relationship between language and the brain • While language may be located in the brain, it clearly is not situated right at the front Language areas in the brain • The most important parts are in areas above the left ear • Broca’s area • Anterior speech cortex • Damage to this specific part of the brain was related to extreme difficulty in producing speech • Damage to the corresponding area on the right hemisphere had no such effect • Crucially involved in the production of speech  Wernicke’s area o Posterior speech cortex o Damage to this part of the brain was found among patients who had speech comprehension difficulties o This finding confirmed that left hemisphere location of language ability and led to the view that Wernicke’s area is part of the brain crucially involved in the understanding of speech  The motor cortex and the arcuate fasciculus o Motor cortex: area that generally controls movement of the muscles

2  Close to Broca’s area is the part of the motor cortex that controls the articulatory muscles of the face, jaw, tongue and larynx o Arcuate fasciculus: bundle of nerve fibers  Forms a crucial connections between Wernicke’s and Broca’s areas  The localization view o Specific aspects of language ability can be accorded specific locations in the brain o The brain activity involved in hearing a word, understanding it, then saying it, would follow a definite pattern  The word is heard and comprehended via Wernicke’s area  This signal is then transferred via the arcuate fasciculus to Broca’s area where preparations are made to produce it  A signal is then sent to part of the motor cortex to physically articulate the word Tongue tips and slips  The tip of the tongue phenomenon o We feel that some word is just eluding us, that we know the word, but it just won’t come to the surface o Speakers generally have an accurate phonological outline of the word, can get the initial sound correct and mostly know the number of syllables in the word o Mainly occur with uncommon words and names o When we make mistakes in this retrieval process, there are often strong phonological similarities between the target word we’re trying to say and the mistake we actually produce

3 o Malapropisms: a speech error in which one word is used instead of another with a similar beginning, end and number of syllables. Ex. medication used instead of meditation  Slips of the tongue o Produces expressions such as make a long shory stort o Sometimes called spoonerisms o Most everyday slips  The result of sound being carried over from one word to the next, as in black bloxes, or sound used in one word in anticipation of its occurrence in the next word, as in noman numeral o It has been argued that slips of this type are never random, that they never produce a phonologically unacceptable sequence, and that they indicate the existence of different stages in the articulation of linguistic expressions o May result from slips of the brain as it tries to organize linguistic messages  Slips of the ear o How the brain tries to make sense of the auditory signal it receives o Can result in our hearing great ape (actually gray tape) o It may be the case that some malapropisms originate as slips of the ear Aphasia  Suffer from different types of language disorders  An impairment of language function due to localized brain damage that leads to difficulty in understanding and/or producing linguistic forms  Most common cause of a stroke, though traumatic head injuries from violence or an accident may have similar effects

4  Those effects can range from mild to severe reduction in the ability to use language  Often has interrelated language disorders, in that difficulties in understanding can lead to difficulties in production  Broca’s aphasia o Serious language disorder characterized by a substantially reduced amount of speech, distorted articulation and slow, often effortful speech o Agrammatic speech: grammatical markers are missing  Wernicke’s aphasia o Results in difficulties in auditory comprehension o Can actually produce very fluent speech which is often difficult to make sense of o Difficulty in finding the correct word- referred to as anomia  Conduction aphasia o Damage to the arcuate fasciculus o Sometimes mispronounce words, but typically do not have articulation problems o They are fluent, but may have disrupted rhythm because of pauses and hesitations o Comprehension of spoken words is normally good o The task of repeating a word or phrase creates major difficulty Dichotic listening  An experimental technique that has demonstrated a left hemisphere dominance for syllable and word processing is called the dichotic listening test

5  This technique uses the generally established fact that anything experienced on the right-hand side of the body is processed in the left hemisphere, and anything on the left side is processed in the right hemisphere  Right ear advantage: when asked to say what was heard, the subject more often correctly identifies the sound that came via the right ear o The language signal received through the left ear is first sent to the right hemisphere and then has to be sent to the left hemisphere (language center) for processing  Non-verbal sounds are recognized more often via the left ear, meaning they are processed faster via the right hemisphere  The right hemisphere is first choice for non-language sounds and the left hemisphere specialized in language sounds The critical period  Lateralization: (one sidedness) specialization of the left hemisphere o Process begins in early childhood, when language acquisition takes place  Critical period: during childhood, there is a period when the human brain is most ready to receive input and learn a particular language o First language acquisition lasts from birth until puberty o If a child does not acquire language during this period, he will find it almost impossible to learn a language later on  Genie o Thirteen years old o No radio or television o Only contact with her mother for a few minutes to be fed

6 o Spent her whole life in a state of physical, sensory, social and emotional deprivation o Unable to use language when she was first brought into care o Within a short period of time, she began to respond to the speech of others, to try to imitate sounds and to communicate o Her syntax remained very simple o Against the notion that language cannot be acquired at all after the critical period o Had no left hemisphere language facility o A very strong left ear advantage for verbal and non-verbal signals o Our capacity for language is not limited to only one of two specific areas, but is based on more complex connections extending throughout the whole brain
