LISTENING

Listening The listening test has 25 questions. There are a number of things to remember about the listening test:

1. All 25 questions use the 4-option multiple choice format. 2. Candidates can listen to audios twice in Parts 1 and 2 but only once in Parts 3 and 4 3. Each candidate will take the exam independently using headphones.

Description

Part 1 Word and number recognition

In these questions, candidates listen to a short phone message and you need to identify specific information such as a number (e.g. phone number, time) or a word.

In this part, candidates will listen to three recordings of monologues or dialogues and they will have to answer two questions for each recording.

Tip: Candidates should use the fact that you can listen twice to their advantage here: o Read through the questions before they listen o Predict what someone might say about these things o On the first listen they can select their answers o On the second listen they have time to confirm.

Candidates will hear a discussion once between a man and a woman and on the screen a number of opinions will be shown. Candidates will need to identify who expresses which opinion: (A) The man (B) The woman (C) Both the man and the woman

Contrasting Monologues

Tip: Candidates have 20 seconds before the audio begins. They should use this to read the options and make notes on what they think they should listen for (e.g. numbers, synonyms.) In this part, candidates will hear two separate monologues once. They will need to select the correct answers from a table. Tip: Candidates have 20 seconds before the audio begins. We suggest they use this time to speculate what kind of words they expect them to hear around these opinions so they can listen out for hints.
