General
General General information, VCADS Pro
T0009435
VCADS Pro is a software package used to test, calibrate and program control units in trucks and buses. There is also a function that allows results to be saved on job cards. VCADS Pro operates under Windows 95. VCADS Pro Test and Calibration is used to carry out tests and calibrations on vehicles using the Multiplex electrical system. Tests can also be performed on vehicles using conventional electronic systems. The tests and the calibrations in VCADS Pro are organised according to function group and comprise a number of standard components. There are standard components
for graph presentations and continuous reading of parameters for example. VCADS Pro Programming can be used to program control units with D12A and EDC Multiplex electronic control systems. The parameters in the ECUs can usually be programmed locally. However some parameters require connection to the Vehicle Data Administration database (VDA) at Volvo. Various parts of VCADS Pro can be accessed depending on training, market situations, etc.

Test The VCADS Pro Test program contains tests that can be performed on vehicles using both the Multiplex electrical system and conventional electrical systems. The tests are made up of standard components, e.g. display of sensor values or graphs that show how a signal varies with time.
An identification dialogue is displayed when VCADS Pro Test is started. The dialogue lists the user, electrical system and model so that only tests for the relevant model are displayed. When the dialogue has been completed the Test menu is shown from where all the tests are started. For further information see “Test and Calibration, VCADS Pro ” page 23.

Calibration The VCADS Pro Calibration program contains calibrations that can be performed on vehicles with Multiplex electrical systems. VCADS Pro Calibration is made up in the same way as VCADS Pro Test. For further information see “Test and Calibration, VCADS Pro ” page 23.
Programming The VCADS Pro Programming program is used to program vehicles using D12A or EDC Multiplex electrical control systems. The following functions are available for vehicles with Multiplex electrical systems:
•
Replace ECU: This function is used to re-program an ECU with all the required software. Connection to Volvo is required.
•
Campaign: Volvo informs users when campaign programming is to be carried out and to which vehicles the campaign applies. Connection to Volvo is required.
•
Conversion kit: Connection to Volvo is required to program the accessory kit.
•
Instrument language: This function allows you to program up to three different languages in the instrument. Connection to Volvo is required.
•
Parameters: There are two types of parameters that can be programmed, vehicle parameters and customer parameters. The vehicle parameters are either for optional extras or are legally required and require connection to Volvo. The customer parameters do not require connection to Volvo. They can be programmed locally.
For further information see “Programming, VCADS Pro ” page 44
Job card The VCADS Pro Job card is used to store work operations that have been carried out using VCADS Pro, e.g. test results, error codes and parameter programming. The job cards are stored locally on the computer being used. All job cards are listed in a menu accessible in the Main menu. An individual job card can be opened from the job card menu. The result of individual tests can be displayed. Completed tests can also be played back.
When the first test is completed, the operation can be saved on an existing job card for the vehicle. Alternatively a new job card can be created. Tests cannot be carried out without saving the operations to a job card. For further information on programming the D12 and EDC control systems, see “Job cards, VCADS Pro” page 77.

Simulation A simulation function makes it possible for the user to test run the program without having to connect a computer to a vehicle. For further information see “General administration” page 18.
User ID Each VCADS Pro user has a personal user ID and password. Several user Ids can be stored on the same computer.
•
The user ID is assigned by Volvo and cannot be changed. There are different categories of user. The user ID is linked to one of these categories. Access is provided to the different functions in VCADS Pro depending on the user category.
Workshop ID A workshop ID is installed in the computer. Only one workshop ID can be installed. The workshop ID is saved in the relevant control unit during programming. This makes it possible to check which workshop carried out the most recent programming at a later date.
User information Note: The telephone line that is used must be a direct external analogue line. The telephone line must not be routed via an exchange. This is to ensure communication between Volvo and VCADS Pro. Note: Under no circumstances should other programs be installed on the VCADS Pro PC. Programs not installed by Volvo compromise the functions in VCADS Pro. Changing settings without advice from Volvo or the user manual may result in operating problems. Update VCADS Pro at least once a week to ensure that the latest version is being used. The DigiPass password generator and associated start code are not supplied initially but are sent out separately. The password generator is sent out first and then the start code is supplied shortly afterwards. Unless the help desk has received information concerning problems with the delivery within 30 days of receipt, Volvo Parts Corporation will consider the equipment to be in working order and complete. The disc supplied is used to retrieve user IDs from the Volvo database. This routine is completed before delivery. Keep the disc in a safe place.

After Multiplex electrical system has been selected, the program reads off information from the control units. This may take a couple of minutes. Among other things the program checks that those control units which store the chassis identity all contain the same chassis identity. If this is not the case, the program blocks all functions except Replace ECU. If the chassis identities differ, the vehicle’s specification has not been defined. This could affect the safety and function of the vehicle!

Connection images, VCADS Pro The new multiplex electrical system has 3 sockets for communication with the control units positioned on a common mounting plate at the front fusebox. Refer to the existing service manual for the control unit for conventional electrical systems.
Multiplex electrical system Communication socket For communication with control units connected to the SAE J1708/J1587 data link (instrument, engine, vehicle, ABS etc.), the 8–pin socket, yellow (2) is used. The 4–pin black socket (1) is intended for simplified EOL programming which will be covered in future service bulletins. The 16–pin grey socket (3) is at present only used only for communication via ISO 9141 with C- and, where applicable L lines (e.g. ECS and the turntable control unit). Further communication is planned via this socket. This will be described in future service bulletins.
T0009432
Note: When programming the ECUs with VCADS Pro in the present mode, communication unit 998555 must be connected directly to each ECU using programming kit 9998578. Do not connect via the communication socket.

VDA (Vehicle Data Administration) What is VDA? VDA is a database with vehicle specifications that is used globally within Volvo. It is important to always update VDA so that it contains the correct information. VDA contains the following information for each chassis:
• • • • • •
general information variant description vehicle components customer adaptation software control unit parameters
When a vehicle is built, a great deal of information about the vehicle is stored in VDA. The information in VDA forms the basis for:
• • • • •
warranty handling quality follow-up possible campaigns/service measures VCADS Pro (tool for diagnosis and programming) replacement parts
VDA is updated when:
•
important components with new part numbers or new serial numbers are replaced on the vehicle.
• •
vehicle specification revisions. new and important components are installed on the vehicle.
Note: It is ESSENTIAL that VDA is updated throughout the operational life of the vehicle. VDA is updated automatically via VCADS Pro for many components. For some components, the mechanic must contact VAS TST (Volvo Action Service Technical Support Team) to update the part number and/or serial number in VDA.
95
Group 00 VCADS Pro User Manual
Why update VDA? VCADS Pro is used to communicate with the vehicle. VCADS Pro uses VDA as a data bank when programming. In order to ensure vehicle functionality and correct components and software in the future, it is:
•
ESSENTIAL that the mechanic contacts VAS TST (Volvo Action Service Technical Support Team) whenever important components with new part numbers or serial numbers are replaced on the vehicle. See the list “Components that must be updated in VDA” page 97.
What happens if VDA is NOT updated? Incorrect information in VDA will mean the customer receives the wrong:
• • •
software replacement parts accessories
This can result in loss of functions, breakdowns, down time, problems when fault tracing or the vehicle warranty becoming invalid. Note: It is ESSENTIAL that VDA is updated.
Automatic update •
For so called ”Campaign programming” in VCADS Pro, VCADS Pro updates VDA automatically.
Manual update •
96
VAS TST must be contacted whenever important components are replaced. See “Components that must be updated in VDA” page 97.

Components that must be updated in VDA When a control unit in the vehicle is replaced with a unit with a new hardware part number, the part number must be updated in VDA. The update can be registered by ringing up VAS TST or via the conversion kit in VCADS Pro. VDA must be updated before the control unit is programmed. Note: VDA only needs to be updated if the part number of the control unit hardware has been changed.
Note: The conversion kit is only compatible with certain control units. Legend: Parts and serial numbers that must be updated in VDA by contacting VAS TST are marked “X” in the table below. Those part and serial numbers not marked “X” are updated automatically.
The part number for the conversion kit is obtained from the “Parts info” information dispatch, which is available from the importer in each market. Function group
