The Sticking Plaster Nowadays, one of the most common items was found in the home is the sticking plaster. Protecting a cut by covering the affected area with a piece of material that sticks to the skin may seem a rather obvious idea, so it is perhaps surprising to learn that the plaster was not invented until about ninety years later. The person who thought up the idea was Earle Dickson, an employee of the Johnson & Johnson company. Concerned about his wife Josephine sometimes had accidents while cooking and doing other jobs, he used pieces of cotton material placed inside strips of sticky tape to cover her injuries. This prevented dirt getting into the wound and protected it from further harm as she did the housework. Dickson’s boss was impressive, so in 1921 Johnson & Johnson put the new sticking plaster into product under the brand name Band-Aid. Sales at first were slow, but somebody at the company kept up with the bright idea of giving free plasters to the Boy Scouts. This created public and from then on it became a commerce success. Dickson was promoted within the company, eventually becoming a senior executive. Although the basic design of the sticking plaster has remained similarly to the original, there have been many developments in the materials used but it is now available in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. Total worldwide sales are believed to have exceeded 100 billion.

Part 2. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions. Write your answers A, B, C or D in the corresponding numbered boxes provided. Most people think that lions only come from Africa. This is understandable because in fact most lions do come from there but this has not always been the case. If we went back ten thousand years, we would find that there were lions roaming vast sections of the globe. However now, unfortunately only a very small section of the lion’s former habitat remains. Asiatic lions are sub-species of African lions. It is almost a hundred thousand years since the Asiatic lions split off and developed as a sub-species. At one time the Asiatic lion was living as far west as Greece and they were found from there, but in a band that spreads east through various, countries of the Middle East, all the way to India. In museums now, you can see Greek coins that have clear images of the Asiatic lion on them. Most of them are dated at around 500 B.C. However, Europe saw its last Asiatic lions roaming free to thousand years ago. Over the next nineteen hundred years the numbers of Asiatic lions in the other areas declined steadily, but it was only in the nineteenth century that they disappeared from everywhere but in India. The Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in India was established especially to protect the Asiatic lion. There are now around three hundred Asiatic lions in India and almost all of them are in this sanctuary. However, despite living in a sanctuary, which makes them safe from hunters, they still face a number of problems that threaten their survival. One of these is the ever-present danger of disease. This is what killed more than a third of Africa’s Serengeti lions in 1994, and people are fearful that something similar could happen in the Gir Sanctuary and kill off many of the Asiatic lions there. India’s lions are particular vulnerable because they have a limited gene pool. The reason for this is interesting - it is because all of them are descended from a few dozen lions that were saved by a prince who took a particular interest in them. He was very, healthy, and he managed to protect them otherwise they would probably have died out completely. When you see the Asiatic lion in India, what you sense is enormous vitality. They are very impressive animals and you would never guess that they this vulnerability when you look at them. 16. According to the passage, many people believe that lions come from __________. A. A. Alan Upshire I would like to be taller. I have a long body and short legs, but I have no problems in dressing for work smart suits, shirts and ties are the order of the day, and I do invest in good quality suits that keep going for years. My appearance is important for the work I do and I now know what labels to buy for suits that are going to fit well. What I have trouble with is casual wear for weekends - you know, the right sort of informal look for supper with friends, or taking the kids out. I'd like to find the perfect casual jacket, but I hate ties and wouldn’t wear one out of work. I want to look casual and stylish even though I’m in my forties. I don't like to see older men wearing trainers, but I don't know what type of casual shoes to buy, for example. Phòng GD&ĐT Quỳnh Lưu - Kỳ thi chọn đội sơ tuyển HSG Tỉnh lớp 9 năm học 2021-2022

B. Bany Sheldon Being an actor, the way I look can affect my opportunities and the parts I get. I’ve got used to wearing my hair long, but I know it's time for a change now. But how short do I go, and what style should I choose? That’s the problem because I want it to look dramatic, I want a new look. My style of dressing is simple and stylish, especially for rehearsals when I’ll go in jeans and T-shirt. But I also work part-time at a filmsales company and, although I work mostly on the telephone, I have to look smarter. I don't mind shopping for clothes, but I'm not very good if I have anyone with me because I like to browse at my own pace, you know, try lots of things on. I find I buy a lot of things in black and white. It's simple and stylish and easy to put together. C. Chris Theydon I hate shopping for clothes and will only do so when it's absolutely necessary - about once every six months. My girlfriend usually comes with me because she has better taste than I do! I’d describe my style of dress as very casual, perhaps bordering on scruffy. I try to avoid wearing smart clothes, and this may be something to do with the fact that I'm hopeless at keeping things smart. Ironing is a skill I've never really mastered, for example. Also, as I was in uniform for about twelve years when I was in the army, I never really had to think about all this somehow. I know I should be smarter for work, but it’s a pretty relaxed office and so jeans and T-shirt is the norm. It’s very rare for me to wear a suit, but as I’ve got about three friends' weddings coming up, perhaps I ought to think about a new one. D. Des Waltham I would describe my style of dressing as individual. I know what I like and I know what will suit a particular occasion. I'm very worried about the effect clothes have on the way other people react to you. I'll wear a suit if I think it will make a meeting more productive or my oldest jeans if I want to shock people. I like shopping and I like clothes, but I don’t like shopping for clothes. Where I shop depends on where I am and as I travel abroad a lot, I’m also looking for bargains in the sales wherever I go. One problem is that my wife is a fashion designer and so I always get a reaction to the things I buy, although she has long since given up trying to influence me. Part 4. Read the text below and fill in each gap with ONE suitable word. Write the answers in the corresponding numbered boxes provided. The Need For Sleep How much sleep do we really need? This can vary quite a lot between individuals. However, it (36)________ widely believed that between 6 to 8 hours is healthy. What is particularly important is that this sleep happens (37)________ the right time; that it fits in with our body’s natural rhythm. If you suffer (38)________ sleepiness or dysfunction during the day then you are probably not getting enough sleep when you most need it. Typical symptoms of a lack of sleep are low concentration, poor memory and feeling irritable. Getting the right amount of sleep is not only important in (39)________ of being able to function properly on a day to day basis (40)________ it also has an impact on your overall health. Research suggests that people (41)________ sleep between 6 to 7 hours per night are likely to live longer than (42)________ who sleep less than 6 or more than 8 hours per night. One reason (43)________ this is because of the effect sleep has on our immune system. There is a belief that old people need less sleep than other adults, (44)________, this is not in fact true. The elderly need (45)________ much sleep as when they were younger but changes to their body’s rhythm and health problems might make it more difficult for (46)________ to sleep through the night. Part 5. Read the following passage and answer questions 48-60. The Earth A. The Earth is the third planet from the Sun and it is the only planet known to have life on it. The Earth formed around 4.5 billion years ago. It is one of four rocky planets on the inside of the Solar System. The other three are Mercury, Venus, and Mars. B. The large mass of the Sun makes the Earth move around it, just as the mass of the Earth makes the Moon move around it. The Earth also turns round in space, so different parts face the Sun at different times. The Earth goes around the Sun once (one "year") for every 365¼ times it turns all the way around (one "day"). C. The Moon goes around the Earth about every 27⅓ days, and reflects light from the Sun. As the Earth goes round the Sun at the same time, the changing light of the Moon takes about 29½ days to go from dark to bright to dark again. That is where the idea of "month" came from. However, now most months have 30 or 31 days so they fit into one year. D. The Earth is the only planet in our Solar System that has a large amount of liquid water. About 71% of the surface of the Earth is covered by oceans. Because of this, it is sometimes called the "Blue Planet". E. Because of its water, the Earth is home to millions of species of plants and animals. The things that live on Earth have changed its surface greatly. For example, early cyanobacteria changed the air and gave it oxygen. The living part of the Earth's surface is called the "biosphere". F. The Earth is part of the eight planets and many thousands of small bodies that move around the Sun as its Solar System. The Solar System is moving through the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy now, and will be for about the next 10,000 years. G. The Earth is generally 150,000,000 kilometers or 93,000,000 miles away from the Sun (this distance is named an "Astronomical Unit"). The Earth moves along its way at an average speed of about 30 km or 19 mi a second. The Earth turns all the way around about 365¼ times in the time it takes for the Earth to go all the way around the Sun. To make up this extra bit of a day every year, an additional day is used every four years. This is named a "leap year". H. The Moon goes around the Earth at an average distance of 400,000 kilometers (250,000 mi). It is locked to Earth, so that it always has the same half facing the Earth; the other half is called the "dark side of the Moon". It takes about 27⅓ days for the Moon to go all the way around the Earth but, because the Earth is moving around the Sun at the same time, it takes about 29½ days for the Moon to go from dark to bright to dark again. This is where the word "month" came from, even though most months now have 30 or 31 days. Questions 48–55 Reading Passage above has eight paragraphs A-H.
