¿Cómo usar THERE IS y THERE ARE en Inglés? THERE IS / THERE ARE → Ambas expresiones significan HAY en español. Ejemplos: ●

There is a sofa in the kitchen / Hay un sofá en la cocina.

There are three sofas in the kitchen / Hay tres sofás en la cocina.

La gran diferencia con el español es que en inglés diferenciamos entre there is en singular y there are en plural.

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre There is y There are? Básicamente la diferencia es que There is se usa con complemento SINGULAR (lo cual quiere decir que estamos hablando de una sola cosa, persona, lugar, etc.) y There are se utiliza con complemento PLURAL (lo cual quiere decir que hablamos de 2 o más cosas, personas o lugares): ✓ ✓

There is a curtain in my bedroom / Hay una cortina en mi dormitorio. There are 2 curtains in my bedroom / Hay dos cortinas en mi dormitorio.

En el primer ejemplo hablamos de una cortina (singular); por eso usamos There is. Por otro lado, en el segundo ejemplo hablamos de 2 cortinas (plural); por eso utilizamos There are.

THERE IS Usamos there is para singular y para cosas incontables (que no se pueden contar). Por ejemplo: ● ● ● ●

There is a dog in the park. There is a man at the door. There is a gas station down the street. There is a bus stop on the corner.

THERE ARE Usamos there are con sustantivos en plural. Ejemplos de “there are” para plurales.

Negativo: Agregamos “not” después de is/are.

There are not any good movies on TV / No hay buenas películas en televisión. Agregamos “any” a las oraciones negativas y preguntas.

La pregunta se hace colocando el verbo al principio de la frase, y la respuesta corta se hace repitiendo las mismas palabras en singular o plural, positivo o negativo, según el caso.

Pregunta: Are there any shops on this street? Rta: Yes, there are. Pregunta : Is there any food in the fridge? Rta: Yes, there is. Pregunta : Is there a message for me? Rta: No, there is not. Recuerda que usamos “any” para oraciones negativas y

preguntas.

HOW MUCH → CUÁNTO, CUÁNTA (SINGULAR) How much money is there in your house? / ¿Cuánto

dinero hay en tu casa?

HOW MANY → CUÁNTOS, CUÁNTAS (PLURAL) How many books are there in your bag? / ¿Cuántos libros hay dentro de tu maleta?
