ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to express my special thanks to my faculty Mr. Sachin Pathak who gave me the opportunity to do this project on the topic professional document, which also helped me in doing a lot of Research and I came to know about so many new things I am really thankful to him.

INTRODUCTION The Ford Mustang is an American car manufactured by Ford. It was originally based on the platform of the second generation North American Ford Falcon, a compact car. The original 1962 Ford Mustang I two-seater concept car had evolved into the 1963 Mustang II four-seater concept car which Ford used to pretest how the public would take interest in the first production Mustang. The 1963 Mustang II concept car was designed with a variation of the production model’s front and rear ends with a roof that was 2.7 inches shorter. Introduced early on April 17, 1964 (16 days after the Plymouth Barracuda), and thus dubbed as a “1964½” by Mustang fans.

2

The 1965 Mustang was the automaker’s most successful launch since the Model A. The Mustang has undergone several transformations to its current sixth generation. The Mustang created the “pony car” class of American muscle cars, affordable sporty coupes with long hoods and short rear decks, and gave rise to competitors such as the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, AMC Javelin, Chrysler’s revamped Plymouth Barracuda, and the second generation Dodge Challenger. The Mustang is also credited for inspiring the designs of coupés such as the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri, which were imported to the United States.

The Ford Mustang began production five months before the normal start of the 1965 production year. The early production versions are often referred to as "1964½ models" but all Mustangs were advertised,VIN coded and titled by Ford as 1965 models, though minor design updates in August 1964 at the "formal" start of the 1965 production year contribute to tracking 1964½ production data separately from 1965 data with production beginning in Dearborn, Michigan, on March 9, 1964; the new car was introduced to the public on April 17, 1964 at the New York World's Fair.

Executive stylist John Najjar, who was a fan of the World War II P-51 Mustang fighter plane, is credited by Ford to have suggested the name.Najjar co-designed the first prototype of the Ford Mustang known as Ford Mustang I in 1961, working jointly with fellow Ford stylist Philip T. Clark. The Mustang I made its formal debut at the United States Grand Prix in Watkins Glen, New York, on October 7, 1962, where test driver and contemporary Formula One race driver Dan Gurney lapped the track in a demonstration using the second "race" prototype. His lap times were only slightly off the pace of the F1 race cars.

An alternative view was that Robert J. Eggert, Ford Division market research manager, first suggested the Mustang name. Eggert, a breeder of quarterhorses, received a birthday present from his wife of the book, The Mustangs by J. Frank Dobie in 1960. Later, the book's title gave him the idea of adding the "Mustang" name for Ford's new concept car. The designer preferred Cougar (early styling bucks can be seen wearing a Cougar grille emblem) or Torino (an advertising campaign using the Torino name was actually prepared), while Henry Ford II wanted T-bird II.

1964 Based on the 1964 Falcon platform, the first generation Mustang would become an American icon and define the term "pony car", a special breed of cars.

The name was taken from the WWII American fighter plane, the P-51 Mustang. Later, the car would prove inspiration for the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri. The Mustang was a big hit right from the start, selling more than one million cars in just 18 months.

1965 As was a custom in America at the time, every year modifications would be made to a car.

This was the case with the Mustang. Even is the changes were minor from one year to the next, they would be easily identifiable. The main changes on the 1965 model were on the front end of the car, the headlamps and the front bumper. The interior received adjustable front bucket seats.

1965 1965 was the first year the GT package was introduced in the Mustang line-up under the name "GT Equipment Package".

This included a V8 engine, fog lamps mounted on the grille, stripes on the rocker panels and disc brakes. As opposed to the base version, the GT was equipped with a four-barrel carburetor, and later, reverse lights became an option.

1966 The 1966 model altered the trim levels on the Mustang.

Also a new grille was introduced, side ornaments, wheel covers and even the gas cap. Automatic transmission became optional on the Hi-Po. New features for the car included a AM/eight track sound system and even one fo the first AM/FM car radios on the market. Round gauges and padded sun visors now became standard on all models.

1968 1968 was the year that marked the first major redesign for the Mustang.

First of all, a big V8 engine was fitted under the hood but also the overall size of the car grew. Now concave taiilights were fitted to the car and the ornamentation included a side scoop and a chrome side trim. The interior became more luxurious, with new color options, brushed stainless steel accents, and a tilt steering wheel.

1969-1973 For its 1969 model the size of the Mustang was increased yet again.

this was the first model to use the four head lamps, 2 on the inside and 2 on the outside of the grille. The engine models were all updated and the performance on all cars were improved. On the outside, reflective stripes were placed on the sides of the car. The hood was made matte-black and simulated air scoop and front cable tiedowns just like the race cars.

1970

In 1970 the Mustang was facelifted yet again, this time all the headlights were moved inside the grille.

The rear fender air scoops were removed altogether. The car received "hockey-stick" stripes on the Boss trim level. The car was promoted by the a car which won the Trans Am by a series Boss 302. This move actually managed to boost sales. The next revision would bring yet another increase in size.

1971

The 1971 model was probably the longest Mustang produced.

This was the last high-performance model because after this the general trend was towards smaller engines. The big-block engines actually influenced the design of the car which was now adapted to the 5.8 liter unit. Starting with 1973, these cars would be limited because of strict emissions regulations in America. Two high performance versions, the HO and the Cobra Jet were introduced in 1972.

1972-1973 During this time some of the biggest and most powerful Mustangs were produced.

When the high performance engines, the 351 HO and the 351 Cobra Jet were introduced, the Mustang was redeveloped for big-block engines. But because automakers in the US switched their readings from gross to net when it came to engine torque, its hard to compare these engine with previous models.

1978 After the initial request from fans that the car be returned to original size and after the oil crisis hit, the Mustang underwent a series of cosmetic changes in order to boost interest once more. The Stallion trim included styled wheels and a blackened grille, bumpers and the body moldings. The King Cobra limited edition was released, only available with a V8.

In 1978 the second generation Mustang was reaching its end.

15

1979 The car was now built on the larger Fox platform, which was originally used on the Ford Fairmont. This allowed the car to have a larger boot and a bigger engine bay and space inside the car could now offer comfortable seating for 4 people. The engine line-up was carried over from the previous generation.

The 1979 Mustang was released after the success of the second generation.

CHAPTER

1981 Fresh off the production line, the third generation Mustang was already modified by 1981 with a performance version, the Turbo 4. The engine on this car was however very unreliable because the turbo system wasn't perfected which led to premature failure and even a fire hazard, The model was pulled from the line a year later. In 1983 it was returned as the Turbo GT model.

18

1996 The GT Mustang belonging to the fourth generation maintained the same power output from the Overhead cam 4.6 liter engine which was able to produce more torque than the base 302 version. Still, many owners complained that the GT version was in fact slower, despite the bigger revs displayed on the counter A new engine and design would come stating with 1999.

1998-2004 The fourth generation was based on an updated version of the Fox platform which consist of: 6 gasoline engines:1. 3.8 V6 5AT (190 HP) 2. 3.8 V6 5MT (190 HP) 3. 4.6 V8 5MT (260 HP) 4. 4.6 V8 5MT (306 HP) 5. 4.6 V8 5MT (326 HP) 6. 4.6 V8 5MT (390 HP)

In 1998 the single overhead cam 4.6 V8 received a power boost to 225 hp due to a PCM calibration and an enlargement o the exhaust system. 1998 was the only year when the Sports package was offered on the Mustang and the last that the Round Body design was used. The rest of the models in the engine line-up remained unchanged.

2004-2008

2004 saw the rebirth of the Ford Mustang as an American icon with a complete redesign, which was termed by Ford as “retro-futurism”. Basically, it meant that Ford ceased to rethink the Mustang concept and returned to its original design but kept all the modern technologies. The car was built on the D2C platform, a brand new design at the time. Starting with 2006 a Pony Package became available. 3 Gasoline engines 1. 4.0L V6 5AT (213 HP) 2. 4.0L V6 5MT (213 HP) 3. 4.6L V8 5MT (300 HP)
