Repeat the following in parentheses ( yo , insert hook into same stitch, and pull through, repeat two more times into same st, pull yarn through all 4 loops on hook, ch 1 ) until you have 12 puff stitches, sl st into rst st of round to join.

TIP: When you yarn over and pull through, try to keep all loops the same size for even puff stitches.

Round 3 : Attach pale yellow yarn by putting hook through any gap between puff stitches and working a standing tr st.

Work 3 more tr stitches keeping the nal loops on the hook until you have 4 loops on your hook, then pull through all loops and

ch 3. Work 11 more treble clusters in the same way until you have 12 treble clusters, join the round with a sl st.

After sl st join, then fasten off

Round 4: Using beige yarn, work a standing tr st into any gap between yellow tr clusters.

Work 2 more tr sts to make a group of 3, the difference with the previous round is that you nish eahc st so you only have one st left on the hook.

Dc 3 into the two spaces, the tr 3, ch 1, tr 3 into the next space to make a corner, continuing in the same way ( see photos below) to complete the round, ch 1 and sl st to join.

When you fasten off make sure you leave an approximately 25 cm/10 inch tail of yarn to use for sewing the squares together.

Crown (olive green yarn used in photos for clarity) Round 1 : Ch 3, dc into ch 4 loop 11 times, slst into 3rd chain of initial 3 ch to make a circle. You should now have a small circle of 11dc and 3ch counting as one dc, total 12 dc

Round 2 : Ch 3, 2 dc into each stitch till end, slst into 3rd chain to close circle ( 24dc)

Round 3 : Ch 3, *1dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch , repeat from * till end, sl st into 3rd chain to close circle ( 36 dc)

Round 4 : Ch 3, *1dc in next 2 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch , repeat from * till end, sl st into 3rd chain to close circle (48 dc)

Round 5 : Ch 3, *1dc in next 3 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat from * till end, sl st into 3rd chain to close circle (60 dc)

Round 6 : Ch 3, *1dc in next 4 stitches, 2 dc in next stitch, repeat from * till end, sl st into 3rd chain to close circle (72 dc) Leave approximately 40 cm tail for sewing onto squares ring.

Sew squares into ring Sew squares together putting needle through the back loops of the stitches from each section as in the photo on the left using the tails you left for sewing.

Sew crown to ring of squares

fi

With right sides together pin the crown section to the lower section, sew them together (using the tail from the crown ) putting needle through the back loops of the stitches from each section as in the photos below. Just sewing through the back loops gives a nice de ned seam.

Brim Round 1: Using brown yarn, attach yarn to any spot between squares, work one round of sc and sl st to join round.

Round 2 : Ch 2, *dc 6, dc 2 into next st* repeat from * to * till end of round. Sl st to join round ( I usually crochet over the previous round's yarn end to cover it).

Round 3 : Ch 2, *dc 7 dc 2 into next st* repeat from * to * till end of round. Sl st to join round

Round 4 : Ch 2, *dc 8 dc 2 into next st* repeat from * to * till end of round. Sl st to join round, fasten off yarn

fi

Round 5: Using brown yarn, join with a standing dc stitch where you nished with the last round, work dc2 into every stitch in the round, join round with a sl st and fasten off yarn
