1. SCOPE. This procedure to describe and establish the requirements to performing the ultrasonic examination for the piping activities during the execution of Ammonia Urea ENPC project 2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS.  BS EN ISO 5817 B  EN 1714: 1997 +A1:2002  EN 583 PART 1,2  AD 2000- Merkblatt. 3. PERSONNEL.  The personal for the examination / supervision shall fulfill the requirements according to the qualification /certification the standard EN-473 shall apply or equivalent (Qualified and Certified According To ASNT- TC -1A (LEVEL

II) 

Accept / reject decisions shall be made by a Level II or Level III Qualified inspector.

4. TEST EQUIPMENT  All inspection shall be conducted with ultrasonic pulse refection system suitable of frequency between 1 and 5 MHz the probe nominal frequency shall be 2.25 MHz inspection shall carried out using longitudinal wave and shear wave probes with incident angle of 45 to 70 degrees.  If necessary probes having incident angles or frequencies, may be used. 5. USE OF COUPLANT  The following products can be used to maintain sonic contact :  Mineral oil.  Couplant compound.  Celluloses glue. 6. PROBE CONTROL 6.1. Angle beam probes Calibration of distance and sensitivity shall be made using block IIW-V to verify  The exit point of the ultrasonic beam.  The index point of the probe.  The emission angle of the sound beam. 6.2. Straight beam probes 

The probe resolution power will be checked.

7. BASIC CALIBRITION BLOCK The basic calibration block shall be used to establish a primary reference response of the equipment. The material form which the block is fabricated shall be a section of pipe of the same nominal size, schedule, heat treatment and equivalent P-Number grouping as one of the materials being examined. 8. CALIBRATION For both angle and straight beam, the applicable code and referenced techniques will be used. 9. CALIBRATION FERQUENCY An overall control of calibration is required in the following instances: a) Before starting series of examinations. b) Every four hours. c) At the end of series of examinations. d) In case of doubt. e) After replacement of equipment parts. 10. INSPECTION PROCEDURE  Contact surface. The contact surface shall have to be free from weld spatters, dirt, scales, paint or anything else interfering with the travel of the probe or the transmission of ultrasonic waves. 

Scanning All scanning shall be conducted at speed not exceeding 150mm per second. To assure complete coverage of the weld volume, each pass of the search unit has to be moved with at least 10% overlap of the transducer (piezoelectric element). Straight beam scanning of the adjacent base metal shall be performed to detected reflectors that might affect interpretation of angle beam results.

Angle beam scanning for reflectors oriented parallel to the weld. The angle beam shall be directed at approximately right angles to the weld axis from two directions where possible. The search unit shall be manipulated so that the ultrasonic energy passed thought the required volumes of weld and adjacent base metal. The scanning shall be performed at a gain setting at least two times the primary reference level. Evaluation shall be performed with respect to the primary reference level.

Angle beam scanning for reflectors oriented transverse to the weld The angle beam shall be directed essentially parallel to weld axis. The search unit shall be manipulated so that the angle beam passes through the volumes of weld and adjacent base metal. The scanning shall be performed at a gain setting at least two times the primary reference level. Evaluation shall be performed with respect to primary reference level. The search unit shall be rotated 180 deg. And the examination repeated.

11. TIME OF EXAMINATION The ultrasonic examination of welds shall be performed after heat treatment (when required). 12. Evaluation Any imperfection which causes an indication exceeding the acceptance criteria of the applied codes will be reported. 13. RECORDS The inspection data shall recorded on the relevant forms.

14- Application:. Ultrasonic test shall be performed for weld joints with wall thickness > 20 mm. An ultrasonic examination can be performed instead of radiographic examination 15- Reporting: See the attachment report. .
