FIELD MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION GUIDELINE FMC-CHIKSAN® AND WECO® PRODUCTS USED IN OILFIELD TEMPORARY PIPING APPLICATIONS

Caution: As with all piping products, the service applications of FMC-Chiksan® and Weco® products vary widely. Given the variable service conditions, the expected service life of oilfield temporary piping can vary widely as well. In order to maximize the safe useful life of Chiksan® and Weco® products, the end user must institute appropriate inspection procedures with due consideration of all service conditions.

Scope: This ENGINEERING BULLETIN describes some of the inspections and routine maintenance currently instituted by some end users of Chiksan® and Weco® products used in oilfield temporary piping applications. This bulletin does not include all inspections (non-destructive and destructive) which may be appropriate at regular intervals in certain operating environments. Each end user must evaluate and develop their own inspection and maintenance program for the specific service conditions encountered and to fit with other operating procedures. The program should include written supporting safety procedures for the performed inspections, particularly pressure testing. Specific FMC product operating and maintenance bulletins outline procedures for repacking, greasing, care and handling, installation consideration, etc. The product maintenance and operating instructions also detail the product description, product features, the working pressure/temperature ratings, cautions and warnings, and other important information. These instructions must be carefully followed. Consult factory for special applications, such as applications with higher operating parameters than previously encountered or applications involving external loadings not previously evaluated or any new applications with operating parameters not clearly within the stated operating parameters of the product.

1.0

Operational Maintenance and Inspections With Each Use 1.1

Cleaning - all fluid bores should be thoroughly flushed of working fluids and all exterior surfaces should be cleaned after each use. All Weco® threads should be cleaned with solvent containing a rust preventative.

1.2

Greasing - all components (swivel joints, plug valves, etc.) should be greased in accordance with operating and maintenance instructions for that product using the recommended grease. Operate each freshly greased piece of equipment. Plug valves should operate smoothly and swivel joints should rotate smoothly as described in the operating and maintenance bulletins.

1.3

Visual - visually examine Weco® female sub and nut threads for corrosion and wear. Visually inspect Weco® packings and packing faces, Weco® wing union hammer lugs, and detachable nut retainer ring and segments. Visually inspect Chiksan® ball retainer plugs and retainer ring. WARNING: If a ball retainer plug is missing, disassemble the swivel joint and count the number of balls in each race to be certain that exactly the correct number are installed. Incorrect number may cause binding or excessive wear and reduced pressure or structural capacity. Visually inspect exteriors of all products for wear, impact damage, cracks or other types of damage.

1.4

2.0

Sealability - some determination of seal integrity of the various components should be made with each use. A hydrostatic pressure test, not to exceed the maximum allowable working pressure, may be appropriate in many instances.

Scheduled Maintenance and Inspections At Each Scheduled Inspection Interval The interval at which scheduled inspection should occur depends on several factors, such as: o o o o

the quality of the operational maintenance and inspection as described above. the frequency of equipment use. service conditions - working pressure, flow rates, temperatures encountered, etc. historical service life and maintenance for the equipment in use.

Once every six months is a commonly used inspection interval schedule for Chiksan® and Weco® products used in oilfield temporary piping applications. However, this service interval is specifically dependant upon the service factors listed above. 2.1

All operational maintenance and inspections as described in Section 1.0 should be performed.

2.2

Hydrostatic Pressure Test - Chiksan® and Weco® equipment should be

"FOR CUSTOMER USE" ENGINEERING BULLETIN Number 102C, Rev. 9 March 2006 Page 3 of 9 FIELD MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION GUIDELINE FMC-CHIKSAN® AND WECO® PRODUCTS USED IN OILFIELD TEMPORARY PIPING APPLICATIONS

pressure tested to their full rated working pressure. Note: pressure testing above full working pressure is not recommended and all pressure testing must be performed in accordance with a user's approved pressure testing safety procedure.

3.0

2.3

Erosive Wear - the wall thickness of pressure piping components must be checked for erosion. Ultrasonic thickness gages are effective for this measurement and the measured thickness must be compared with the recommended minimum thickness for specific product. The rate of wear must be analyzed to insure that the minimum wall thickness will not be violated prior to the next scheduled inspection.

2.4

Record Keeping - products should be marked indicating pressure and erosion tests. Keeping maintenance logs is a valuable planning tool for packing replacement scheduling, rebuild planning and gaging erosion rates.

Rebuilding and Replacement Chiksan® and Weco® products failing to meet inspection criteria must be replaced or rebuilt. The Operating and Maintenance Instructions for specific products detail rebuild procedures and detail some of the conditions which would render a product not rebuildable. FMC's Integrated Services offers equipment rebuilding services and can be consulted regarding Chiksan® and Weco® rebuild criteria. 3.1

Sealability - leaks present a dangerous condition and must be corrected. Small leaks can wash out packings, wash out threads or cut seats. Packing replacement and rebuilding, whether performed on scheduled basis or as required, must include thorough examination of sealing surfaces and redressing as required. WARNING: If any leakage is detected from FMC products, take them from service immediately to prevent potential damage or personal injury. Follow product operating and maintenance bulletin procedures or consult FMC Rebuild Service.

3.2

Deformations - products exhibiting significant deformations due to handling or use must be carefully evaluated. Wing nuts with ears deformed to the extent that hammer blows can no longer be made tangential or deformations which would otherwise preclude solid makeup must be replaced.

3.3

Erosion - wall thickness measurements must be compared with minimum allowable thickness for the specific product. Equipment with wall thickness below the minimum allowable must be removed from service.
