Let's get started!

01. Choose the right dimensions for your design

To begin, choose your design type from the CANVA homepage. These are set to the optimal dimensions for each graphic, whether it’s a social media post, flyer or more. Or you can use custom

dimensions by searching for “custom size”. You can choose from pixels, millimetres or inches.

02. Choose a background

The background for your design could be a color, or an image. Background colors Design tip: Different colors tell different stories. Purple is associated with individuality,

orange relates to activity, and green conjures images of nature. Think about what colors best suit your needs. For help choosing a color palette, try Canva’s Color Combinations tool.

02. Choose a background

Of course, you can always use a white background too.

Background photos Search Image or upload your own. Then drag and drop your image. It will snap to fit.

You can add filters to change the brightness, saturation and clarity of the photo.

3. Add your elements

Your design might include text, icons, photos or illustrations. These need to be combined in a way that is visually appealing. CANVA graphic designer Lynneal Santos says it’s a matter of balance. “Consider the balance and composition of all the elements in the

design.

Are they centered? Are they too close to each other?

3. Add your elements

Number one tip? “Keep it simple.” Don’t overload your design with too many elements, as it can confuse the visual message of the image. This is something designers call visual

heirarchy, which involves the arrangement of elements according to their importance. Try playing with size, color, and placement in order to see what works best.

4. Choose the right fonts

The look of your fonts can have a huge impact on your design.

4. Choose the right fonts

Choosing one font is hard enough. But your design may need more than one typeface. CANVA suggests never using more than two fonts in a design, as too many fonts tends to

make a design look “messy”.

4. Choose the right fonts

You’ll want to choose complementary fonts, which add visual interest while working well together.

CANVA has hundreds of pre-set font combinations to choose from.

4. Choose the right fonts

Don’t forget about readability. If your fonts are too complicated, they can detract from your message. Design tip: Typographic hierarchy establishes

the order of importance given to different design elements. By applying different fonts, color and scale to your text, you can dramatically change the way your message is received.

Graphic DesignTips for non-designers and beginners

1. Limit your typefaces

for Font's sake, limit your typefaces.

Applying of lots of fonts not only makes your design hard to read, but what's even harder is finding ones which will actually look good together

2. Don't be scared of scale Make your desgn dynamic by

changing the scale of objects and

elements, this will give your graphic

features visual order

3. Respect the space of other elements

Respect the space of other elements. Give your objects and their neighbors space to breathe. Your composition should be evenly spaced. Ensuring no overcrowding of shapes, image or text.

4. Use a small color scheme Be clever with your colors

Colors create visual harmony. By choosing a warm color or

monochromatic color combination, you will create a tonal

foundation for your design.

5. Create, clean, crisp and clear imagery

No point in designing something if you can't read what you have created! Use crisp, clear typefaces to help your readers on their visual journey

6. Use fonts to help inform the mood of your design

fonts have feelings too! Figure out the mood of your content, is it

contemporary or traditional? Apply a typeface

that reflects the spirit of your subject matter.

7. Create order with alignment

Almighty Alignment A well composed design is aesthetically pleasing. Lines, shapes, and objects are lined up to create flush margins and baselines, forming a stylistic and well thought out design.

8. Keep your designs simple

Keep it simple.

Don't hassle yourself complex styles and palettes. Some of the best design is also the most simple.

Simple is close to perfection.

9. Use the same design elements on every page Multi-Page Magic

If you are creating multi-page documents, make sure you apply the same style fonts, sizes and image filters to all your designs for consistency.

10. Be original Create your own style

Becoming an original thinker isn't easy. Learn techniques, go against the grain, broaden your skill-set and create your own design methods.

11. Use hierarchy to order your content

Holy hierarchy

The treatment given to elements by scale, typography, compositional placement or color will dictate the way your content is being read.

12. Play with symmetry Corresponding Creations

Remembering that good graphic design doesn't happen by mistake-ensure all lines, frames, and spacing are similar weights for stylistic consistency.

13. Relax your eyes every now and then Take a step back and have a break every now and then. Your work will benefit from a set of fresh eyes.

Take a break

14. Keep your font in the same family

Keep it in the family

You don't have to use different fonts to get a dramatic effect.

Use light, bold, and italic variants from the same font family.

15. Use white space Don't be afraid to leave pockets of negative space. It will ultimately bring balance to your composition and defines the areas of positive space.

16. Research before your start designing

Gather & Hunt

Collect facts, objects, and materials you need to curate your project perfectly.

17. Create a mood board Moodboard

If you like to jump right to the design, go ahead- but for some, it's nice to gather images and swatches that represent your message to create a mood first.

18. Imitate and create Imitation is the best form of flattery, trying to recreated a design you love is one of the most effective ways to learn.

19. Be conscious of global events

What is going on around you can be an influence on your creativity as well as keeping your mind culturally relevant.

Read Current Events

20. Think outside the box Avoid Cliches (an element of an artistic work, saying, or idea that has become overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect, even to the point of being trite or irritating)

Don't use a lightening bolt or thinking bubble icon to represent ideas-flex your creativity Search-Sketch-Repeat

21. Contrast is key

Whether it's type, layering or color combinationsensuring these elements contrast is key to creating striking design

22. Brighten up your graphics

Applying a bright color can sometimes seem daunting, but remember it's a great way to give your message optimum visual impact.

23. Keep a notebook Put it on paper

Keep a journal of your freshest and most inspired ideas to refer to when your creativity needs a boost.

24. Trial & Error Every now and then your first design is stellar. Other times it takes 20 sketches and 40 layouts before to see the final draft.

DRAFT!

25. No naked images.

Use grids and frames to give your design a professional edge.

26. Finesse. But not too much. Your designs should be beautiful, but not perfect

nobody likes anything perfect.

You don’t have to study for hundreds of hours to be good at design. But, like most things in life, you’ll get better with practice, so don’t be disheartened

if your first design doesn’t turn out perfectly. Instead, keep practicing and keep creating. You’ll be creating brilliant, polished images in no time.
