Introduction
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's learn Inject. With Inject you can write or “Inject” a thought into the minds of your spectators! You can Inject an image, web search, map location, YouTube video, music and just about anything else you can find online. Here’s one of many effects you can do with Inject: “May I please borrow your phone to do a quick search?” You borrow any mobile device and do a quick search in any web browser. You then leave their phone face down. “I did an image search of a planet … I’ll try to INJECT this image into your mind!” Gently touch their forehead. “Name any planet in our solar system.” They say “Jupiter”. When they turn over their phone, they discover that you had done an image search for Jupiter!!! • • • • • • •
The effect is done on the spectator’s phone. ALWAYS! Your phone is never seen. You can do the above effect without an accomplice. Your spectator is in a REAL web search (there are NO fake websites … EVER). You never ask your spectator to go to an unknown website. NO trace of foul play is left on the spectator’s phone … everything can be examined! As long as they have internet access, you’ll perform STUNNING effects!
Facebook Group We highly recommend that you join the closed group for Inject on Facebook. Inject - Magic App https://www.facebook.com/groups/307439169380406/
In this group we will be discussing many tips, tricks and routines that will help you master Inject.
How to read this manual You are welcome to read this manual from top to bottom, but if you'd like a quick shortcut to how to perform any of the included effects, we highly recommend you read any of the "Performing" sections of this manual. For example, if you want to learn how to perform the "Actors" effect, read "Performing Actors".
The Secret By entering your custom receiver URL (web address) in the address bar of any web browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.), you will be converting your spectator’s device (smart phone, computer, tablet, etc) into a RECEIVER. There are different types of receivers in Inject. The main receiver is used for effects where you are doing a web search (word, image, map, video). There are other receivers that are used for effects like Houdini, LOVE Colors or web albums (more on that later). If you perform alone, you will be transmitting by swiping the screen of your smart phone in your pocket. You can also use a small bluetooth keyboard (like the AIRTURN DIGIT II) to transmit the four arrow keys. If you perform with an accomplice (wife, friend, etc.), they will be transmitting from THEIR web browser on their device. They don’t need any special apps to help you. ________________________________ ***PLEASE READ*** On the iPhone, your iPhone will only vibrate if both "Vibrate on Ring" and "Vibrate on Silent" are ON. To do this, launch your iPhone's Settings, touch "Sounds", turn both "Vibrate on Ring" and "Vibrate on Silent" to "ON". ________________________________
New Features For INJECT 2.0 Inject 2.0 (i2) is essentially a brand new app built from the ground up. It has all the features, presets and functions of Inject but also adds many new features. Sort Presets: Notice the Blue Circle on the bottom left of Presets Screen, that has a tiny notepad. This is Edit Mode. Edit Mode will let you rearrange your presets in any way you like. When you are in Edit Mode tap on the 3 bars on the right of each preset, drag and drop them in any order you want. When finished editing tap on the green check circle or green "Done Editing" bar. Audio Notifications: Uses text-to-speech to play your notifications from either your speaker or a hidden bluetooth hearing device. Spell Notifications: Spells the thumped notification just in case it was hard to hear or you have a noisy environment. This is also great for homophone words like son and sun. You can have both Audio & Spell Notifications on at the same time. Pair Mode: This is one of the most exciting new features of Inject 2.0. Pair Mode Monitoring allows for you to pair with someone else's phone without you borrowing or even touching their phone. You might be thinking how exactly could that work? Well the first thing is you tell the spectator is to go the most famous image site in the world, googleimg.com There is no user id or other telling information. Googleimg.com looks and acts exactly like images.google.com. And unlike Google this images page never changes with holidays, seasons or special events. The spectator can continue to go back to googleimg.com and search for images until their heart's content. First, you have your spectator go to googleimg.com and you are linked to them and can monitor whatever they type in the search bar one time, for up to 3 minutes. How this works: You have your spectator go to googleimg.com and then once they do, swipe once on the on the Monitoring Page of your Inject App. You will get a notification of PAIRED or NOT PAIRED. If your notification says NOT PAIRED and another magician is performing using pair mode at the exact same time, well we have an answer for that too, KEYWORDS.
Inject will tell you if googleimg.com (pair mode) is already being used by another user and will automatically tell you to use one of your personally chosen keywords in the performance. So you just slightly alter your performance by having the spectator include that keyword in their search. For example Inject might tell you to use the keyword "RED" So you say something like "I'd like for you to make the image extra unique by adding a color, let's say red, I want you to search for anything in the world but add the color red" So the spectator searches for a Red Taco and you have them concentrate on one of the images and you can reveal that they had typed Red Taco etc. You can choose multiple keywords just in case there are two users using the exact same keyword at the exact same time. So if someone is using the same keyword at the exact same time then Inject will move down your list and tell you which keywords are not available to use. The keyword can also be anywhere in the search bar it does not have to be the first word. You can have up to 10 keywords. Chances are pretty high that you won't have to use a keyword at all and that you will be able to pair with your spectators directly. But remember to be fair to all users the pairing only lasts 3 minutes. So plan your performances accordingly. Push Notification: With Push Notifications, you don't have to have Inject running to receive notifications of your spectator's thumps. You can borrow a spectator's phone and type in your googled.co/userid and when they search for something it will push a notification to your phone and smartwatch. As long as your copy of Inject is installed on your phone, push notifications will work. Push Notifications also work with Apple Watch without having to turn off WristDetection. Please note: Push notifications only work when you type your URL in the address of your spectator's device. This will not work with the new auto pairing feature. Delayed Thump Receptions: you can now turn on an Inject receiver after a THUMP has been transmitted. If you type googled.co/userID and then add a ! (exclamation point) and then tap on images you will get the previously thumped information. (googled.co/userID!) This means you can receive the information after someone has searched for it. The magicians phone can be dead or off.
The Three Pairing modes of Inject: When you need to secretly receive information from your spectator's device, you need to pair a website to your phone. We'll now highlight how you'll use the three pairing modes with these performance examples:
URL Pairing: Prepare Inject by opening the app and going to "Settings" and then touch the "Web" tab. Under "Default Search Text" type the word "define". The " " is a space character. Performance: "Will you please open any browser on your phone and go to Google.com". Your spectator goes to google.com on their phone. "Let me show you a handy feature in Google ..." You take their phone for a moment. Tap the search field in Google as if you are going to type something there. Now tilt their phone slowly away from them so that they can't see exactly what you're typing ... don't try TOO hard to hide the face of their phone. You don't want to raise any suspicion. "Did you know that if you type 'define' followed by a word, Google will show you the definition of your word". As you pretend to type "define" you secretly type the address of your URL in their address bar. If your URL is: googled.co/10 As you type "googled.co/10", you are slowly saying "deee ... fiiine" stretching your vowels as if your typing "define". Now hit enter ... make sure you touch enter softly so that you don't raise suspicion about typing in a URL. Your fake google page will now appear on their phone with the word "define"
already in the search field. Tap the search field again as you tilt their phone back around to face them. If you're a good actor, they should think that you simply typed "define" in their google.com Now, whatever they type in the search field and hit enter will be transmitted to your phone (either in the new push notification or in Inject's "Monitor" mode). The only drawback to this pairing mode is you must touch their phone to perform.
Auto Pairing: In Inject 2.0 you can now pair with a spectator's phone even if you never touch it. Prepare Inject by going to "Settings". Under "Google Image Keywords", type in a few simple adjectives separated by commas like: Red,bad, mad, big Please make sure these words are easy to spell. We'll see how to use these words in a moment. On the main Inject screen, touch "Monitor" to go to the "Monitoring" page, and place your phone face up in your pocket. Tell your spectator: "The world's most popular image search site is googleimg.com". "The fastest way of getting their is to type "googleimg.com" in your address bar". Be sure to spell "img" for them so they don't type the word "image". After your spectator types "googleimg.com" you ask: "Did it open?" When they say yes, wait a beat and swipe the face of your phone in your pocket. You have 10 seconds after the page opens on their phone to swipe your screen. If you fail to swipe in time, then you will not pair with their phone and you must ask them to refresh the page. One of three things will now happen:
Clean Pair: Most of the time, your spectator is the only one in the world that is at googleimg.com. Inject will now vibrate once and display (and say) "Paired". It will also display paired on your smartwatch as a notification. With a clean pair, you can perform without worrying about anyone else in the world interfering with your performance. Once you have made a clean pair with your spectator, you and your spectator are CONNECTED. If another magician now wants to perform Inject, they will also get a clean pair since your connection to YOUR spectator is already established ... it's impossible for anyone else to interfere with your connection. Keywords Pair: If your spectator is NOT the only person in the world at googleimg.com (or another magician is performing Inject at the exact same time), Inject will vibrate twice and display "KEYWORDS". In Inject Settings, under the "App" tab you'll type a set of words, separated by commas that you would like to use to describe the objects your spectator should search for. Most of the time these words will be adjectives (like sad, mad, etc). Let's say one of your keywords is "green". Since you have felt two vibrations you must first look at your smartwatch or your phone, to see which of your keywords are not available. If you just see "KEYWORDS" then all of your keywords are available. Ask your spectator: "Let's search for something ridiculous ... think of anything but let's color it green". "Maybe green cloud, or green shoe". Your spectator now does a search for anything that has "green" in it. Regardless of how many people are on the site, Inject will now filter the search that has the word "green" in it and thump it to you. Inject also checks to see if another magician is using the same keyword and shows you the words that you can't use from your list.
Hence, as long as you know a small set of keywords, you're always ready to get perfect thumps using AUTO PAIR.
Introduction When you first launch Inject, you'll see the Welcome screen. On this page you’ll find the “Manual” button in the upper right corner that will allow you to read this manual. To register your account, please enter your email address and create a password (and confirm password) and touch "Register" to start. If you’ve already registered in the past, then you can enter your email and password to log into your account. Once you register your account, you'll see the main Inject screen. Inject Screen This is the main Inject screen where you’ll create presets and choose which effect you want to perform. To proceed with this manual, you must use any web connected device (smart phone, tablet, computer, etc) other than your smart phone. This is so that you can use this other device as a receiver. If you can't access another web connected device, then you cannot proceed.
Receiver URL: The URL (web address) listed at the top, is the main URL that you’ll be typing into your spectator’s web browser to convert it into a receiver (sometimes a transmitter ... more on that later). This is a very short URL that reads: 11z.co/x Where “x” is your unique user number. When you enter your receiver URL in the address bar of any browser, you’ll see a fake web search screen. At the top of this screen you can select Web, Images, Maps and YouTube. Web (Default) - any text that’s received will be used for a generic web search. Images - any text that’s received will be used for an image search. Maps - any text that’s received will be used for a search in Google Maps. Touching YouTube toggles through three modes: 1. YouTube (Default) does a web search of whatever is typed in the search field. 2. Videos = concatenation for the "one ahead" routines. 3. Video = no concatenation for "one ahead" routines. (more on that later)
Thump Monitor: The Thump Monitor button allows your device to receive transmissions that are coming from the spectator's device. When the Thump Monitor is activated, when you receive a transmission, your device will vibrate and the screen will display whatever your spectator had typed into the fake web search on their device. (more on that in the Performing Dictionary Effect). If you have a smartwatch, the transmission will also be displayed on the screen of your smartwatch.
Quick Start Guide Make sure you are in an area that has internet access. If you try to perform with no internet or bad (slow) internet, the trick will not work. Type your unique Receiver URL in the address bar of your other device (spectator’s device). For example, if your user number is 7, you’ll type: 11z.co/7 On the receiver device you will see a fake Web Search screen. On this screen you can decide what type of a receiver you’d like. For this example, touch “Images” to make this receiver show images. Back on your device, on the main Inject screen, touch the “Basic (Transmitter)” bar. Please don’t touch the edit button to the right of the button (that button is for editing your preset). On the Basic (Transmitter) screen type the word “dog” and either hit enter (or Go) or you can touch the “THUMP” button. *** In this manual, the word "thump" means TRANSMITTING information to a receiver. *** At the top of the transmitter page, you’ll see feedback that shows your thump has been transmitted and received. You’ll also feel one vibration that indicates the thump has been sent and another vibration that indicates your thump has been received. On the receiver, you’ll see an image search of “dog”!! Isn’t that COOL!? You just did your first THUMP! You will typically use this transmitter with an accomplice. Later in this manual, you’ll learn how you can thump from your device in your pocket.
If you want to do the above again, simply type your URL again in the address. On some browsers, you may notice that your browser will auto fill lots of random numbers at the end of what you've typed: You'll try to type "11z.co/7" ... But the auto fill will type "11z.co/7-1446750010660" ... Make sure to just enter your unique address WITHOUT all of the extra random numbers at the end. Menu Button The menu button in the upper right corner allows you to access Settings and read this manual.
Inject Settings On this page you can see your account email, User ID and app version number. Enable Web Thumpers allows you to toggle your web transmitters. If Web Thumpers is on, then your accomplice can use any web browser to secretly transmit a signal to your spectator's device. Inject will also display the URL of your web transmitters below each transmitter's name on the main Inject screen. If Web Thumpers is off, then no one can use a web browser to transmit. You are the only one that can transmit from within the Inject app. On the main Inject screen, you'll now see "web thumpers disabled" below each transmitter's name. Vibration feedback toggles on and off the vibration feedbacks of Inject. If you are performing in a very quiet environment, we suggest your turn this off. Local Notifications toggles your devices push notifications that gives you feedback on a smartwatch as a notification. Please note ... due to a limitation with iOS, the current version of Inject will not transmit Local Notifications to the Apple Watch. This is a known issue that will be addressed in the next release. All other smartwatches (such as the Pebble) will work fine. Make sure that the settings of your smartwatch will display local notifications from the Inject App.
Covert Swipe Thumpers toggles a black screen when you use your swipe transmitters. When you turn this on, you'll be able to leave your smartphone out in the open with Inject covertly running in the background. Because of the black screen, your smartphone will look like it's off. The covert black screen is also a great way to save battery life. To exit the black covert swipe screen, double tap the upper left hand corner of your screen. Localize Website: On this page, you can customize what words appear on your fake web search screen. You can change the text to any language, as well as replace the Image that's used in your fake web search screen.
Making your URL disappear (Table Numbers): When you type your Receiver URL in the address bar, you'll see that there's a long number added to the end of what you just typed: 11z.co/7-1446750010660 That long number is an auto generated table number. If you type your Receiver URL without adding a "-" (dash), then Inject will automatically create a random table number for you. If you type your Receiver URL and then add a "-" (dash) and a number to the end, then you can assign a unique table number to your receiver. The table number has a few functions: 1. In an image receiver, the table number will lock whatever is transmitted to that receiver forever (more on that later). 2. In a web album, the table number indicates which table number your receiver is listening to (more on that later). 3. The table number helps Inject hide your secret URL from discovery on your spectator's device. When you perform Inject, you are typing your secret Receiver URL in a spectator's device (phone). After your performance, if your spectator was to touch the back button, they will not find your secret URL.
If your spectator was to look at the history of their browser (iOS only) they will not find any evidence of your secret URL. If you perform on an Android device (or other) you can always open a new private browsing tab to ensure that your secret URL will not be discovered. Preset Thumpers Big part of the main Inject screen is the list of preset Thumpers. Inject comes with several different effects that you can use immediately to perform. Basic (Transmitter) Your accomplice can use this thumper to secretly transmit any word to the receiver. You can also use this thumper to transmit any URL. Your accomplice can either use your (magician's) device to transmit, or they can use their own device by simply typing the URL that’s listed there. Planets Swipe (Transmitter) This is an example of a simple swipe transmitter that you can use from your pocket, without an accomplice. Swipe Transmitter A swipe transmitter allows you to swipe in four directions (up, right, down, left) starting from anywhere on the screen. You can create as many items as you like on a list that can use any combination of these four directions. PLEASE NOTE - After every swipe gesture, you must lift your finger off the screen.
In the planets transmitter, the first four planets of our solar system are in clockwise order, starting from a swipe up. Swipe up - Mercury Swipe right - Venus Swipe down - Earth Swipe left - Mars The next four planets are: Swipe up TWICE - Jupiter Swipe right twice - Saturn Swipe down twice - Uranus Swipe left twice - Neptune And finally: Swipe up & down - Pluto Every time you perform a series of swipe gestures, Inject will give you feedback at the top of the screen that indicates which item matches your swipe gestures. This way you can practice your swipe gestures without having a receiver displaying your outcome. Inject will then wait 2.0 seconds (default setting) before the signal is transmitted. If you perform the wrong swipe gestures, you can simply make a few random swipes that has no meaning, wait about 2.0 seconds, and then try your swipe gestures again. Please note … once a swipe gesture has been transmitted, it can’t be stopped or undone. Right or wrong, the receiver WILL receive that signal. Performing Planets (without an accomplice) On the main Inject screen touch “Planets Swipe (Transmitter)” and put your smart phone in your pocket, with the screen facing outward (away from your body). "May I please borrow your phone for a quick web search?" Borrow a phone from a spectator and ask them to launch their web browser. "I'm gonna use an image search to search for a photo of a planet".
When you take their phone, hold it close to your chest, make sure no one's looking at the screen and in their address bar type: 11z.co/x Where "x" is your user number (from above). For example, my user number is 7. Hence, what I type into the address bar of their browser is: 11z.co/7 When the website opens, touch “Images” to make this an image receiver. Put their phone face down on a table ... "I did a search for my favorite planet. That’s the last time I’ll touch your phone”. Place your hand in your pocket, with your index finger hovering above the middle of the screen and your other fingers holding the sides of your phone (if there’s room in your pocket, you can also swipe with your thumb). “Whisper any planet in our solar system". Let’s say they whisper “Jupiter”. The reason for the whisper is so that your spectators will not accuse you of using voice recognition. “I did an image search of your planet on YOUR phone”! While you are saying that your index finger swipes up twice on your screen in your pocket. After the default 2.0 second delay, Inject will transmit your thump to your spectator's device. You will now feel one vibration that indicates you sent the thump and another that indicates the thump was received. “Please look at your phone”. They will pick up their phone to discover that you had done an image search for “Jupiter” on THEIR phone!!
Add Thumper When you touch “Add Thumper” you can create your own custom transmitters or receivers. There are currently six thumper types, four Transmitter, two Receivers and MANY Effects. The new Add Effects option in Inject allows you to add presets that will allow you to perform new effects. Some Effects will add only a transmitter, while other effects will add both transmitters and receivers to your list of presets. The list of Effects is constantly updated by Rostami Magic online ... if we come up with a new effect, we can instantly add that effect to your Effects list. Feel free to use these effects as templates for creating your own unique effects. For example, if you want to create a new card effect, you can start by adding Houdini Images and then simply replacing the URLs for the images of Houdini with your own customized image URLs. Basic (Transmitter) We’ve already used this thumper above to send any text to the receiver. Most of the time your accomplice will be using this thumper to transmit either a value or a template. You can also use this thumper type to transmit any URL. When you select the “Basic” transmitter, you’ll notice buttons that allow you to save, trash or go back to the previous screen. PLEASE NOTE - You must always save your preset (the disk icon in the upper right) for your changes to be saved. If you don’t save, all of your work will be lost. Be CAREFUL!! Under “Thumper Name” you’ll type any name that you’d like to give to this preset.
Thumper Identifier Under "Thumper Identifier" you can customize the ending of the URL of this preset. By default the thumper identifier is a number, but you can change it to anything. For example, if your Thumper Identifier is "1" then the URL for this preset is: 11z.co/7/1 The "7" is your user number and the "1" is your thumper identifier. If you change your thumper identifier to "send" then your preset URL will be: 11z.co/7/send
Thump Type Under “Thump Type” you can select either “Simple Value” or “Template”. Simple Value This thump type is simply any text that you type in. The receiver determines what type of search the text will display. So, if you type “Egypt”: If your receiver is “Web”, a generic web search for “Egypt” will be displayed. If your receiver is “Images” an image search of “Egypt” will be displayed. If your receiver is “Maps” the browser will use Google Maps to display “Egypt”.
Template The template thump type replaces your text with a wild card value under Template. For example, let’s say you want to create an effect where you can predict a YouTube channel your spectator will select. Under Template you would type: https://www.youtube.com/user/--value-The “--value--” above is a placeholder for where your text would be inserted. Hence if the text was “officialpsy” then your transmitter transmits: https://www.youtube.com/user/officialpsy And your receiver would display the famous PSY YouTube channel.
Swipe Thumper (Transmitter) We’ve already used this thumper type above for the Planets effect. You will typically use this thumper by yourself without an accomplice. It was designed to be used from your pocket where you can’t see the screen of your device. When you select “Swipe” you can name your preset, trash it, save it and change the thumper type. You can also use the “+” button to create new items on your swipe list. You can have as many items as you like. Each item will contain the value that will be transmitted along with the swipe gestures that will transmit that value. Feel free to create multiple swipe gestures for the same value. For example, let’s say a left then right swipe transmits “flower”. During the stress of performance you might forget it’s left then right. To alleviate this problem, simply create another item on the list for “flower” but this time the swipe gesture is right then left. If you forget left and right or right and left, both options will transmit “flower”.
Matching period Dictates how long Inject will wait after you’re done with your swipe gestures before it transmits the signal. The default is 2.0 seconds.
List Thumper (Transmitter) The List Thumper gives you a list of up to 100 items on a list that can be transmitted by simply touching that item on the list. You can name your preset, trash it, save it and change the thumper type. This thumper is typically used with an accomplice. Each Item on the list has an input field for the Value of the item along with the Label on the list.
Cards Thumper (Transmitter) The cards thumper was designed to allow you or your accomplice to quickly select any one of the 53 cards in a deck to thump a particular value. There are two default effects that use the cards thumper … Houdini Cards and YouTube Cards. Like the other thumpers above, you can name your preset, trash it, save it and change the thumper type. Under each card, you can type the value that will be transmitted.
Image (Receiver) This is a receiver thumper. The “Image Receiver” is a special kind of receiver that allows different images to be continuously thumped to it. The Houdini preset effect uses this thumper type. When you want to perform with the “Image Receiver” you must type the URL listed under that image receiver in your spectator’s device. You can name your preset, trash it and save it. Initial Image URL is a URL or a web address to the base image that you want to be displayed when you first visit the image receiver URL. In the Houdini effect, the Initial Image URL is a photo of Houdini where there are no cards displayed in his eyes (a starting image).
Sticky When Sticky is ON, the URL remembers the last image that was transmitted to it. For example, the Houdini effect remembers the last card that was transmitted to it. Hence, the next time you visit the URL for the Houdini effect it displays the card that was selected from the previous performance. When Sticky is OFF, the URL will always start by displaying the Initial Image URL.
Web Album (Receiver) Like the image receiver above, the web album is a receiver thumper that allows you to have an album of images that your spectator can swipe through. Also, you can constantly transmit new values to this receiver. These values are simply numbers from 1 to whatever is the last number of photo in your album. Hence in an album of five photos, the values would simply be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
All of the images that you will use in this receiver must have a unique URL. This means, if you want to use your own images, you must upload your images online. The ESP preset effect uses this receiver. The purpose of this thumper is to give you a way of making your spectator into a mind reader. You can also use this receiver as a way of forcing images on your spectators (more on that under Performing Web Album). Here's a little secret about Inject ... when you type a web album URL in a spectator's device, give it a manual table number. For example, for the ESP Album type: 11z.co/7/12-1 Now, touch the ESP (Receiver) in Inject and input the table number you used (in this example it's 1). You will now see on your screen whatever your spectator is looking at on their device. This even works with local notifications on your smartwatch!!!
Performing ESP Album In Inject touch the ESP Swipe (Transmitter) and put your phone face up in your pocket. On your spectator’s device you will type the URL for your ESP (Receiver). In their browser you’ll now see an image album that has all of the five ESP symbols in it. Swipe through the images as you say … “I think you can read my mind”! “I will go through these ESP symbols, stopping on the one I want”. “I think you can read my mind and tell me which symbol I’m thinking of”. Take their phone and swipe through the images and stop on whichever symbol you want. Place their phone face down in front of them as you say.
“Concentrate on my thoughts … which symbol am I thinking of”? Put your hand in your pocket, like the swipe planets effect from above. Let’s say they say “Square” cheer “WOW!!” Immediately swipe to the left on your screen to transmit square to their device. “Please pick up your phone and see”. They will now see that indeed you were thinking of the square!?
Performing Web Album In this routine, you will NEVER touch your spectator's phone! In Inject touch the Web Album Swipe (Trans) and put your phone face up in your pocket. On your spectator’s device have them type the URL for the Web Album (Receiver). In their browser they will now see an album that has 100 random photos in it. “I'm going to try to SEE through your eyes”! “As you swipe through this album, you'll see there are 100's of photos”. “You're going to randomly select a photo. Hold your phone face down and randomly swipe forwards and backwards through the photos”. "Stop wherever you like". The moment you notice them stop swiping you are going to do one of four swipes in your pocket. 1. 2. 3. 4.
Up swipe is a photo of a man with an umbrella. Right swipe is a photo of dog and cat sleeping. Down swipe is a photo of the root of a large tree. Left swipe is a photo of a pretty lady, behind glass.
For this example let's say you swiped up (man with umbrella).
"Please look at the "random" photo that you just stopped at. Make sure no one else sees that photo". "I will now try to SEE through your eyes". Here's where your incredible acting skills come in. "It's very hard to see ... I see a black and white photo of a man ... it looks like he's struggling with an umbrella"!! "Show everyone your photo". They will now see that you were correct!! If you want to do the trick again, you'll simply swipe a different direction from your pocket to reveal other photos. This is a GREAT way of forcing any image on your spectator. They think they are randomly selecting photos in an album on their phone, but they are NOT!
The One-Ahead Thumper This is, BY FAR, my favorite feature in Inject. To demonstrate it’s capabilities, let me describe an effect: “I just came up with a GREAT name for my band!” “Most of the legends in music have had two word band names … Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc” “The way they made these names is by asking two people to name two words.” “I’m so excited about this name I want to make sure someone else isn’t using it. Do you mind if I use your phone to do a quick search?” You borrow their phone for a web search. “Hmmm, that’s interesting …” leave their phone face down. “I’ll give you a hint, the first word is an adjective … Name any adjective.” Your spectator says “Frozen!” “WOW, that’s amazing …”
You now go to another spectator … “May I please use your phone to look up an image.” You borrow another spectator’s phone. You do an image search of a planet, and leave their phone face down. “I will now inject the image that I saw into your mind! Name any planet in our solar system.” She says “Venus”. “That’s CORRECT!! … you could have named any planet, and she could have named any adjective … please look at your phones.” When the 2nd spectator looks at her phone, she sees an image search for “Venus” … When the 1st spectator looks at her phone, she sees a web search for “Frozen Venus”!!! You can perform the above effect WITHOUT AN ACCOMPLICE!
The secret of The One-Ahead Thumper You will be using the same default receiver that you’ve been using above. In Inject, touch the “Planets Swipe (Transmitter)” and put your phone in your pocket face up. For the 1st spectator: You go to your URL (from the examples above): 11z.co/7 Touch the word "YouTube" at the top bar until it changes to "videos". Leave their phone face down. For the 2nd spectator: You go to your URL: 11z.co/7 Touch the word "YouTube" at the top bar until it changes to "videos". Touch “Images” at the top to make it an image receiver. Type in the adjective that the first spectator had said (Frozen) and touch the search magnifying glass to the right.
Leave their phone face down. The 2nd spectator’s device is being used BOTH AS A TRANSMITTER AND A RECEIVER!! Put your hand in your pocket and wait for them to name any planet. When she says “Venus” you will do a swipe to the right and wait for the confirmation vibration codes. The 2nd spectator will now see an image search for “Venus”! The 1st spectator will see a web search for “Frozen Venus”!! You can use the One-Ahead thumper on as many devices as you like … there’s NO limit to how many devices can be used in this one-ahead routine.
The three modes of the receiver website By touching the "YouTube" word in the upper right of your fake web search screen, you can cycle through the three modes of your receiver.
YouTube (Default) (Lazy Inject) This is a mode inspired by a conversation I had with Calen Morelli. The reason why I call this "Lazy Inject" is because you don't have to do anything. Your spectator is going to be doing all the work for you (but they don't know it). ;) In this mode, whatever you enter into the search field will display a Google search on the spectator's phone while transmitting the typed word to a receiver. Read the Lazy Inject Performance below to see how you can use this ingenious mode ...
Videos If you see "Videos" in the upper right-hand corner, then your receiver will combine (concatenate) all of your inputs. Everything that you input into the one ahead system will be concatenated (or combined) on the 1st spectator’s device. In the above example, the 1st spectator received “Frozen Venus”.
Video If you touch “Videos” once, it will change to "Video" which means it will NOT combine all of the inputs. Hence, from the above example, your 1st spectator will simply see “Frozen”.
Performing Lazy Inject "May I borrow your phone to do a search for an image of an animal". Spectator #1 gives you their phone. In their browser's address bar you type your receiver URL: 11z.co/7 At the top, touch "Images" to make this an Image receiver. "I'm going to take a mental snapshot of this animal and later INJECT in into your mind"! ... leave their phone face down. Turn to spectator #2. "Please launch your web browser on your phone". Take their phone from them, and once again type your receiver URL: 11z.co/7 "I'm going to go to Google.com on your phone ... when I give you your phone, search for an animal". "Type in any animal that pops in your mind and IMMEDIATELY hit enter. Make sure no one sees what you've typed".
Spectator #2 thinks they are typing something in Google. HINT: When you touch the search field, a keyboard will appear. Slightly scroll the page up so that the 11z.co address on the address bar gets smaller. On the iPhone, you can also tilt the phone on its side (landscape) which will hide the address bar on the top. Spectator #2 will now see a Google search for their animal on their phone. What they don't know is they just thumped spectator #1's phone with the animal they just typed in. "Is there any way that I could have known which animal you just searched for"? They will answer "No" ... "Look at his phone". Gesture to spectator #1's phone and have him turn it over to discover your image search of THEIR animal!! What's great about this routine is that YOU don't know what they've typed in ... but you pretend that you did know.
Performing The Dictionary Effect In Inject, touch the "Thump Monitor" button at the top of the main Inject screen and put your device in your pocket with the screen facing your body. "I memorized the Dictionary ... there are over 1 million words in the English dictionary and I memorized the definitions of all of them". "There was a time that I would carry a big dictionary with me, but now I can look up words online". "Please bring out your phone and launch any browser". Borrow your spectator's phone as you say ... "Did you know that if type the word "define" followed by any word in a web search, it will show you the dictionary definition". As you say this, you pretend to type the word "define", but in reality you'll type your receiver URL in their address bar: 11z.co/7
Once your fake web search screen appears, quickly type "define" followed by a space in the search field. Quickly show the fake web search page to your spectators. "Think of any word and type it here after the word "define" and touch "search"... It'll show you the definition". You now turn away from your spectators with your hand in your pocket holding your device. After they are done typing, you'll feel your phone vibrate. Quickly pull your phone slightly out of your pocket and read the top line of the display. You'll see exactly what they had typed on their phone! On the spectator's device, they will now see a definition of their word. "Please read a few words from the definition, but please leave out any word that would give it away ... I'll try to guess your word". Your spectator will now read a few random words from the definition. Do your best job acting like you struggling with the word and slowly reveal the word that they are thinking of!! If you have a smartwatch, you can use it to peak at what your spectators have typed.
Creating More Swipe Gestures So far, we’ve used simple swipe gestures to input a few variables (planets are only 9 variables). Here are two other systems that can help you input more variables. 20 Variables Here’s a simple system that I’ve devised that allows you to easily input many variables with a few swipe gestures. In this system for 1 to 5: ↑=1 ↑↑ = 2 ↑↑↑ = 3 ↑↑↑↑ = 4 ↑↑↑↑↑ = 5 We will now use another button to add to our 1 to 5. For 6 to 10: →↑ = 6 →↑↑ = 7 →↑↑↑ = 8 →↑↑↑↑ = 9 →↑↑↑↑↑ = 10 Notice how the → (right swipe) is like a 5 +. Hence, you can think of 6 as 5+1 . As we go around clockwise the next modifier is ↓ (down swipe) For 11 to 15: ↓↑ = 11 ↓↑↑ = 12 ↓↑↑↑ = 13 ↓↑↑↑↑ = 14 ↓↑↑↑↑↑ = 15 Notice how the ↓ (down arrow) is like a 10 +. Hence, you can think of 12 as 10+2 . As we go around clockwise the next modifier is ← (left swipe)
For 16 to 20: ←↑ = 16 ←↑↑ = 17 ←↑↑↑ = 18 ←↑↑↑↑ = 19 ←↑↑↑↑↑ = 20 Notice how the ↓ (down arrow) is like a 15 +. Hence, you can think of 16 as 15+1 .
20 Variables in TWO SWIPES! If you think of the four swipes as a base 4 numbering system, you’ll quickly realize that with only TWO swipes you can enter 20 items … With THREE swipes you can enter 64 ITEMS!! The only problem is it’s very difficult to memorize those directions (or to even do the math to convert from our base 10 system to a base 4). If you perform tricks where there’s a written list of items, you can always number that list like this (City Swipe (Transmitter)):
1. Chicago
23. Vancouver
2. New York
24. Zürich
3. Las Vegas
31. Budapest
4. Paris
32. Maui
11. London
33. San Francisco
12. Rome
34. New Orleans
13. Stockholm
41. Los Angeles
14. Barcelona
42. Madrid
21. Sydney
43. Moscow
22. Prague
44. Hong Kong
Here's the list of actors for the Actors Swipe (Transmitter): 1. Brad Pitt
23. Julia Roberts
2. Tom Cruise
24. Meryl Streep
3. Will Smith
31. Cate Blanchett
4. Ben Affleck
32. Jodie Foster
11. Leonardo Di Caprio
33. Kate Winslet
12. Johnny Depp
34. Nicole Kidman
13. Robert Downey Jr
41. Sandra Bullock
14. Sean Penn
42. Amy Adams
21. George Clooney
43. Charlize Theron
22. Tom Hanks
44. Natalie Portman
Here are the graphic files that we've created for the above lists that you are welcome to download and print. http://333pics.com/cities.jpg http://333pics.com/actors.jpg http://333pics.com/apps.jpg Performing The City Effect For this effect you'll need to print out the Cities picture or you can write it down on a piece of paper. http://333pics.com/cities.jpg In Inject touch the City Swipe (Transmit) and put your phone face up in your pocket. “Will you please launch a web browser on your device.” In their address bar type: maps.google.com Show the spectator the area at the top where you can enter the name of any city. Bring out the piece of paper with the above cities written on them.
“Look over these cities while I do a search for one of those cities on your phone.” Take their phone from them and enter your receiver URL in the address bar. 11z.co/7 Touch the "Maps" word on the top bar. This will force your receiver to display a map search. Leave their phone face down. “Please point to any one of these 20 cities, but please don’t say a word.” Let’s say they point at “Rome”. To you that’s not Rome … it’s item 12. “WOW!” As you say that, you’ll do a swipe up and right (12) in your pocket. “Please look at your phone”. When they look at their phone, they’ll see that you had searched for Rome in the map.
Performing The Actors Effect For this effect you'll need to print out the Actors picture or you can write it down on a piece of paper. http://333pics.com/actors.jpg In Inject, touch the Actors Swipe (Transmitter) and put your phone face up in your pocket. “Will you please launch a web browser on your device”. "I'll do an image search for an actor on your phone". Bring out the piece of paper with the actors written on them. “Please think of one of these actors while I do a search for one of them on your phone.” Take their phone from them and enter your receiver URL in the address bar. 11z.co/7 Touch the "Images" word on the top bar. This will force your receiver to display an image search. Leave their phone face down.
“Point to any one of these 20 celebrities, but please don’t say a word.” Let’s say they point at “Kate Winslet”. To you that’s not "Kate Winslet" … it’s item 33. “WOW!” As you say that, you’ll do two swipes down (33) in your pocket. “Please look at your phone”. When they look at their phone, they’ll see that you had done an image search for "Kate Winslet"!?
Performing The App Store Effect ***PLEASE NOTE*** Since the release of iOS 9.1, Apple has prohibited a website from opening any external app (like the App Store) without a pop-up requester. For this effect you'll need to print out the apps picture on a piece of paper. http://333pics.com/apps.jpg When you look at the Apps graphic (from above), you should think of the rows as 0 to 4 and the columns as 1 to 4. If someone selects any one of the apps in the top row, you simply need to swipe once in your pocket. Hence, for the 1st icon (Cut the Rope) you will think (0,1) ... row 0, column 1. For Angry Birds you will think (1,2) ... row 1, column 2. In Inject touch the App Store Swipe (Transmitter) and put your phone face up in your pocket. "Please launch the App Store on your phone" (if they don't have an iPhone you can have them open any browser). "I'm sure you know you can search for any app by using the search function". Touch the "Search" tab at the bottom of the app store and touch the search field at the top of the page. "I'll search for one of these games" ... give your spectator the list of apps. As you bring their phone up to your face, secretly hit the home button and find their browser (Safari on iOS) and type your receiver URL.
Leave their phone face down, “Please point to any one of those 20 apps, but please don’t say a word.” Let’s say they point at “Angry Birds”. To you that’s not Angry Birds … it’s item (1,2). “WOW, you went RIGHT for it!” As you say that, you’ll do a swipe up and right (12) in your pocket. “Please look at your phone”. When they look at their phone, they’ll see that you had selected Angry Birds in their App Store.
Swiping a Deck of Cards (53 variables) Here’s an easy system to swipe all the cards in a deck with a maximum of THREE SWIPES! The Houdini Swipe preset, ACAAN Swipe preset and the YouTube Swipe preset uses this system. This system was inspired by a conversation with Nathaniel Segal. The first swipe will communicate the suit (in SHoCkD order going around clockwise): ↑ = Spades → = Hearts ↓ = Clubs ← = Diamonds If you do just one swipe and stop you'll communicate all the KINGS! ↑ = King of Spades → = King of Hearts ↓ = King of Clubs ← = King of Diamonds
The next swipe will communicate values from Ace (1) to 4: A to 4: ↑ = A (or 1) →=2 ↓ =3 ← =4 Hence in just two swipes you can input 20 cards! For the rest of the values, you'll use two swipes: 5 to 8: ↑↑ = 5 (4+1) ↑→ = 6 (4+2) ↑↓ = 7 (4+3) ↑← = 8 (4+4) You can think of the up swipe↑as "4+". 9 to 12: →↑ = 9 (8+1) →→ = 10 (8+2) →↓ = J or 11 (8+3) →← = Q or 12 (8+4) And finally, ↓↓↓ (three swipes down) is the Joker. Let's look at a few examples: K of Diamonds ... Your thinking "Diamonds, K" ... ← (ONE left swipe) 2 of Hearts ... Your thinking "Hearts, 2" ... →→ (the first right is for hearts, the second right is for 2) 7 of Clubs ... Your thinking "Clubs, 7" ... ↓↑↓ (first down is for clubs, the up is for "4+", down is for "3", 4+3=7) Q of Spades ... Your thinking "Spades, Q (12)" ... ↑→← (first up is for spades, the right is for "8+", left is for "4", 8+4=12) At first, this might seem a little complex, but with a little practice you'll quickly think of all the cards in the deck as swipes! We highly recommend that you practice inputing ALL the cards in a shuffled deck, without making any mistakes, before you perform presets with cards.
If you're going to be thumping from your pocket, choose the Houdini receiver on any other device, zoom in on the eyes, and monitor your progress.
Performing The Houdini Effect In Inject remember the URL listed under your Houdini (Receiver) preset. Now touch the Houdini Swipe (Transmitter) preset and put your phone face up in your pocket. "There's a BIZARRE photo of Houdini online that I want to share with you ... please launch any browser on your phone". In the address bar of your spectator's phone you'll type the URL for your Houdini (Receiver) (from above). My URL is: 11z.co/7/7 When you hit enter, you'll notice that the above URL will change to something like this: 11z.co/7/7-1459883382715 The LONG number at the end of your URL is going to guarantee that whatever your spectator selects for their card, the above unique URL will remember their selection for eternity. "You see in this old photo, Houdini is holding a playing card, but you can't see the face of the card". "When you look into his eyes, imagine he's TELLING you which card he's holding". Put your hand in your pocket as you wait for their response. "Please whisper any card" ... The reason for the whisper is so your spectators will not accuse you of using voice recognition. Let's say your spectator whispers "King of Clubs" ... you'll immediately do a swipe down on your screen in your pocket. To learn how to swipe all the cards in the deck, please read the above section labeled "Swiping a Deck of Cards (53 variables)". "Wow, that's so WEIRD! Everyone that looks at that photo, thinks of that card ... please zoom in on his eyes".
When they pinch zoom into the eyes of Houdini, they discover a "K" in one eye and the "Clubs" in the other!! If your spectator now refreshes that page, it will STILL display the King of Clubs. If they share that URL with others, that image will display the King of Clubs. When you perform the effect again for your next spectator, it starts with the King of Clubs.
Performing The YouTube Effect Touch the YouTube Swipe (Transmitter) preset and put your phone face up in your pocket. "I want to share with you a video on YouTube ... please launch any browser on your phone". In the address bar of their browser type: youtube.com If you're performing on iOS and the device asks you to open the page in the YouTube app, touch "Cancel". Type youtube.com in the address bar again. "While I search for this video, think of ANY card in a deck". Without them looking, in the address bar of your spectator's phone type the URL for your Receiver. My URL is: 11z.co/7 Put their phone face down. "That's the last time I'll touch your phone". "Imagine a video where a magician waves his hand over a deck and a card mysteriously comes out of the deck ... when he turns it over, it's YOUR card"! Put your hand in your pocket with your index finger hovering over the middle of the screen. "Whisper the card you're thinking of" ...
"I think that your imagination just came to life" ... When they play the video, the magician in the video turns over the King of Clubs!!

Remember the URL for your ACAAN (Receiver) ... if you don't have an ACAAN receiver, then use Add Thumper and add the Effect "ACAAN". Touch the ACAAN Swipe (Transmitter) preset and put your phone face up in your pocket. "I'm going to perform an amazing card trick where I NEVER touch the cards"!? Leave the stacked deck from above on the table. "You are going to use an online roulette wheel, on your phone, to randomly select a number from 1 to 52".
Have them launch a web browser on their phone and openly type the URL for your ACAAN (Receiver), from above, in their address bar. My ACAAN (Receiver) URL is: 11z.co/7/17 "On this website, you can swipe the numbers from 1 to 52 ... when you get to 52 it cycles back to 1". "Hold your phone face down and randomly swipe forwards or backwards ... you can stop anywhere you like". Ask them to swipe the screen A LOT. Put your hand in your pocket with your index finger hovering over the middle of the screen. "Name any card in the deck"? They say "King of Spades". You swipe up on the screen in your pocket once to input the King of Spades ... this will cause the corresponding number to the King of Spades (which is number 31) to appear on their screen. "Now turn over your phone to see what number you selected". They think they have randomly selected any number from 1 to 52, but you have forced number 31 on them. "Remember how I said I wouldn't touch those cards ... pick up the cards and turn over the cards, one at time, from the top until you get to 31". Just as they are about to turn over the 31st card stop them. "So far we still haven't seen your King of Spades. It would be an EPIC coincidence if your King of Spades was at the 31st position". They turn over the 31st card to reveal the KING OF SPADES!!
Closing Thoughts Like all of the other Rostami Magic apps, Inject was designed to be a utility device. Feel free to create presets with your own unique themes and effects. This manual shows swiping your screen by putting your hand in your pocket. Did you know that you can also swipe your screen through your cloths!? Most smartphones will allow you to swipe the screen through one layer of denim (jeans). You can swipe your screen by having your smartphone screen facing out in your back pocket. Feel free to experiment with swiping your screen through cloths, notepads, envelopes, etc. On iOS, the fastest way of finding your spectator's Safari is to go to their home screen and do a big swipe down. This will bring up "Spotlight Search". When you start typing "saf" you'll notice that search will immediately move Safari to the top of the search field where you can simply select it to launch Safari. You can also use Siri and say "Launch Safari". Remember that your accomplice can be ANYWHERE in the world that has internet access. If your accomplice is at home, call them with your phone, turn on your speaker phone and leave your phone in your breast pocket with the mic facing upwards. When your spectator speaks their selection, repeat their selection clearly so that your accomplice can hear you through the speaker phone … They will type the selection in their browser and your spectator will get the results … Now THAT’S sneaky! Carefully examine the existing default presets by touching the “Edit” button to the right of each preset to learn more about how to create and customize your own effects. If you perform regularly with an accomplice, please bookmark your favorite thumpers.
On iOS you can even add a bookmark to the home screen. This makes it a lot easier for your accomplice to access your thumpers. You can use free online disk services like Dropbox to upload the images that you’d like to use in Inject. Dropbox will then give each image a unique URL that you can type into Inject’s Image receiver or Web Albums. A great way to accessories Inject is with Yigal Mesika’s Electric Touch or Matt Mello’s Imaginary Ball. Use the image receiver in your own website by using the HTML tag. This way you can have a photo on your website that you can change remotely for some pretty amazing effects. Practice by putting your phone in the same pocket that you'll use during your real performances. Use your settings to bring your screen brightness down. This will help your battery last longer and eliminate any light leaks coming from your pocket. I’ve used Inject at trade shows nonstop, all day long, and I didn’t drain my battery because my screen brightness was all the way down. For effects where there’s a list of items, write down a numbered list on a piece of paper and have your spectators touch any of the items on the list. This will destroy any theories of voice recognition and it makes it easier for you to remember which swipe gesture to use from your pocket. If you’re performing in a quiet environment, you can turn off the vibration feedback in Settings. As far as memorizing which swipe gesture goes with which value, try rhyming the numbers with the subject of your item. Some examples are one = bun ... two = glue ... Another tip for memorizing swipe gestures for words is to think of the four directions of the swipes as the first 4 vowels (a, e, i, o). With this system the word pie would be (3,2) ... swipe down and right. Look at the first two vowels in the word "pie" ... "i" then "e". The word "dog" would be 4 "o", swipe left.
The word "magic" would be (1,3) ... "a" and then "i". If you perform sitting down, try putting your phone in your lap, your knee or next to you. Create an image in Photoshop that looks like the interface of a lie detector machine. Create an image that displays "Truth" and another "Lie". Upload those images online and then create an image receiver effect where you can trigger the outcome of your online lie detector!! You can use Animated GIFs for your images. This means you can use the image receiver to transmit animations to your spectator’s device! If you have the phone number of your accomplice, text the preset URL to them. This way, they don't have to type the URL into their browser. Inject uses a very short URL for your presets. You are welcome to use your favorite URL shortening service to make the URL either shorter or easier to remember.
In conclusion, remember the rules of magic . . . Practice, Practice, Practice and NEVER expose the secret. We hope you have lots of fun using Inject.
