Introduction Hello! Here I’ll show you how to crochet a glorious Gerbera Daisy, this blossom makes a stunning table decor - either as a centerpiece or a secondary piece. Being so lush and colorful, its a real eye grabber, and would give any bland corner a boost of freshness :) The Gerbera comes in many colors, and Gerberas in different colors have different symbolism - from innocence and purity to joy and cheerfulness. Materials

Front

- Crochet thread size #40 (Your choice of colors). - Steel Crochet Hooks in Size 0.6mm. - Floral tape (Green or Light Green), thin Metal Wires (gauge 28). - Stub Stem (gauge 16/18). For the Central Structure (enough for ~6 blossoms) : - Thread size #20 in brown. - Hot Glue - Tealight Candle. - Brown / Dark brown Crayon (Wax Pastel).

Gerbera Daisy

Gerbera Daisy Blossom

The Gerbera blossom is made of 3 layers of petals (in 2 sizes), each layer, consisting of 10-15 petals. The Center structure is made of 2 main parts : The central disc (the dark region), and the outer rings, which includes the stamens (in yellow and white). The blossom shown in this pattern contains 45 petals (15 petals in each layer). You can choose to crochet only 2 layers of petals, and/or only 12 petals per layer. It is recommended to starch and iron the petals after crocheting.

Final measurements : - ~4.1” (~10-11 cm) in diameter. Please note that both Petals second round are being crocheted around a metal wire (photo guide included), use 8-10” (~20-25cm) long wire, and do not cut the tails, as they will be used when we bring all the elements together.

Large Petal - Instructions

The petal is being crocheted in the round, starting with a base chains row. The second round is being crocheted around a metal wire as well, see photo guide for a detailed description.

Moreover, the stitches of rounds 2 and 3 are being crocheted between the posts of the stitches of the previous round. Final Measurements : ~1.7” (4cm) x ~0.5” (1.2cm) Chains Base Row : Start with 30 chain. Rnd 1 : Ch 1, sk 1, sc 2 times, hdc 18 times, sc 10 times, another sc at the tip and make you way back with - sc 10 times, hdc 18 times, sc 2 times. Finish the round with sl-st to beg ch. Rnd 2 (Crochet this round around a metal wire) : Ch 1, sk 1, sc 3 times, hdc 3 times, dc 12 times, hdc 5 times, sc 7 times, another 2-st sc inc at the tip and make you way back with - sc 7 times, hdc 5 times, dc 12 times, hdc 3 times, sc 3 times, and finish the round with sl-st to beg ch. Rnd 3 : Ch 1, sk 1, sc 3 times, hdc 19 times, sc 2 times, sl-st 6 times, another 2 sl-st at the bottom tip, and make you way back with - sl-st 6 times, sc 2 times, hdc 19 times, sc 3 times, and finish the petal with a sl-st to beg ch. Similar to the Large Petal, this petal is being crocheted in the round as well, starting with a base chains row. The second round is being crocheted around a metal wire as well, see photo guide for a detailed description.

Outer Rings - Instructions

The outer rings element is made in a zig zag motion, row by row. Starting with a chains row, followed by a filler row (dc mostly), and the last rows consists of the florets. Important - the length of the element is dependant on the diameter of the central disc. A good way to determine how many chains to crochet - is to test how many chains are required to circumnavigate the central disc one time, and the time that number by 4. (For example, if it takes 50 chains to circumnavigate the central disc - then crochet 200 chains in row 2, 200 dc in row 2 and spread the florets evenly in row 3.)

The instructions below are for a ~0.6” (1.5cm) central disc (the one in the photo guide) Row 1 : 150 Chains. Row 2 : Ch 3, sk 3, dc 150 times in each stitch. Next we crochet the small florets, we’ll crochet 4 different florets, in batches. Row 3 : Each [] is worked in each stitch - [sl-st, ch 10, sl-st], repeat [] 30 times, [sl-st, ch 6, dc, ch 6, sl-st], repeat [] 40 times, [sl-st, ch 6, tc, ch 6, sl-st], repeat [] 40 times, [sl-st, ch 6, tc 2 times, ch 6, sl-st], repeat [] 40 times. Fasten off thread.

Sepals - Instructions

Similar to the outer rings element, this one is being crocheted in a zig zag motion as well, row by row. Chains Base Row : Start with 33 chains.

Row 2 : (crochet each [] in a single stitch) Ch 6, sk 2, [qc, ch 3, qc], repeat [] 11 times, skipping 2 stitch between each []. Row 3 : (crochet each [] in the loops made by the [] of the previous row - see right photo below) [sl-st, ch 5, 2-trtr puff, 1-ch picot, ch 5, sl-st, sl-st, ch 5, 2-trtr puff, 1-ch picot, ch 5, sl-st], repeat 11 times. fasten off. Stitch Notes : 2-trtr puff - A puff made by 2 Triple Treble Crochet stitches. 1-ch picot - Ch 1, skip ch and sl-st. We use it to create the tip of the element.

Making the Central Structure

The central structure is made of 2 elements :

- The central disc: The dark element in the middle of the structure. To make the central disc, we’ll melt brown color crayon (wax-pastel) with candle wax, and dip a pre-cut thread to achieve the look, shape and firmness needed. - The outer rings: The 3-4 outer rings that consist of small florets that includes yellow and white stamens. We’ll make this part by crocheting a long strip of slightly increasing small petals, and wrap it around the central discs, slowly adding white and yellow pre-cut threads (which will be the stamens). We’ll start with the central disc, to make is you’ll need: - Tealight candles. - Brown (or dark brown) Crayon. - Metal wire. - Crochet thread size #20 in brown. Follow photo guide for instructions :

Step 1 - Fold the brown thread to ~3” (7cm) length, the longer the initial thread is, the thicker the central element will be.

Step 3 - Wrap a few times and tighten.

Step 4 - Twist the thread around itself to ensure firmness.

Step 5 - Leave quite a long tail, as this will be used be wrapped around the main stem.

Step 6 - Next, using scissors, cut the edge of the thread, to create single threads.

Step 7 - Make sure to cut in a straight line, perpendicular to the stem (the direction of the tail).

Step 8 - You’ll have a hairy little brown element. Next, we’ll move to prepare the crayon wax.  Facebook Etsy Ravelry Craftsy

Step 9 - Take a tealight, and empty it from its content.

Making the Central Structure (#3)

Step 10 - Take about a third of the wax you just removed, and drop it back inside the container.

Step 11 - Melt the wax, using any way you prefer ... I’m just using here another tealight :)

Step 12 - Drop inside about a half of the crayon (standard sized), ~1.5” (4cm)

Step 13 - It will slowly become a gooe-y brown colored pool

Step 14 - Turn of the heat source after the wax and crayons are completely liquid.

Step 15 - Dip the element from Step 8 in the pool.

Step 16 - Try to fully dip it in the pool, once the wax dries it will turn firm.

Step 17 - Take it out and let it dry for a minute or two.

Step 18 - Gently roll it with you hands to achieve a consistent look.

Step 19 - At this point, you’ll be able to see if all threads are in the same length or not.

Step 20 - If not, take a sharp knife and cut the tips until the element is flat.

Step 21 - The central disc is ready! This one is roughly ~0.6” (1.5cm)

Making the Central Structure (#5)

Once the outer rings element is crocheted, we’ll move to glue it to the central disc we made in the previous pages.

We’ll simply apply glue on the edges of the central disc, and slowly go round and round until all the outer rings part is glued to the central disc. We’ll add some yellow and white thread in the process, this will be the stamens. Step 22 - The outer rings element.

Step 23 - Apply a few drops of hot glue.

Step 25 - Continue applying glue, around the central element.  Facebook Etsy Ravelry Craftsy

Step 24 - Press the outer rings element, starting from the end when the smaller “florets” are.

Step 26 - ... and keep pressing the outer rings, make sure its stretched, or else the rings would appear wobbly.

Step 27 - Next, prepare ~2” (~4cm) long pieces yellow threads.

Step 28 - Apply a bit of glue to the outer rings element.

Step 29 - And press the yellow pieces.

Step 30 - Continue to do the same around.

Step 32 - Follow that by gluing the outer rings element, to the stamens (keep wrapping the element around the central disc).

Step 33 - Keep wrapping the element.

Step 34 - With each round, add more yellow stamens.

When you reach the last round, you can add white thread, as some Gerberas have white stamens on the outer rings.

Step 35 - Once the central element is finished.

Bringing Everything Together

To complete the blossom, you’ll need : - Completed Central Structure. - 15 Small Petals. - 30 Large Petals. - Stub Stem (Gauge 16/18). - Floral Tape. - Scissors.

Please note that you can make a 2 layers gerbera, or use less petals in each round. Its up to your preferences. Stem 36 - All elements.

Step 37- Start by wrapping the central disc’s tail around the stub stem (remember to keep it centered) - and wrapping a layer of floral tape.

Step 38 - Next, we’ll add the smaller petals. Fold the wire tail outward.

Step 40 - keep adding the small petals until you complete the round, holding all of them together,

Bringing Everything Together (#2)

Step 41 - Tightly wrap floral tape around all smaller Step 42 - Next, we move to add the large petals, petals, until reasonably firm. Cut wire tails that make sure they stick out between the smaller petals. stick out of the floral tape.

Step 43 - Repeat step 40 (keep holding the larger petals).

Step 45 - Repeat steps 42-44 for the third layer.

Step 44 - And repeat step 41.

Step 46 - And the Gerbera is almost done! To finish the Gerbera, we just need to add the Sepals.

Bringing Everything Together (#3)

To finish the blossom, we’ll take the Sepals we already crocheted, and glue it to the base of the blossom. Once the Sepals are glued, we’ll wrap floral tape to cover the base of the sepals, and any visible metal wire. To complete the stem, making it even and smooth, you can wrap simple paper towels around the stem and tightly cover it with floral tape - this will give the stem a more natural look.

Step 48 - Glue it to the base of the blossom.

Step 47 - Take the finished Sepals element.

Step 49 - Wrap floral tape to cover the base of the sepals and any visible wire.

Step 51 - And wrapping another layer (or two) or Floral tape around the paper towels.
