Introduction to Geosoft
Introduction • Geosoft provides integrated mapping and analysis workflows for geology, geophysics, geochemistry and GIS, supporting effective and collaborative earth exploration.
Preparation • Create a folder to work in • Create data file format to import – Comma Separated Values (.csv) are highly recommended – Text files can also be used
Step 1-Create a Project • Double click Geosoft icon on desktop or • Go to the start menu and find Oasis montaj • In the file menu, go to project and select new • Assign a name to the project and select ok
Step 2- Create Database • Go to Database on the menu bar and select New Database • Assign a name to the Database • Input the required maximum lines/groups (Rows) and maximum channels/fields (column) • Click ok
Step 3-Import data • Go back to the database menu • On the import option select the Ascii • Import data file using the browse option • Select wizard set parameters for the data – Choose file type (delimited or fixed file) – Choose column delimiter – Set data parameter
Step 4- set coordinates • Go to coordinates on the menu bar • Select Set Projection • On the Georeference database Channels page – Select your horizontal axis data for X Channel – Select your vertical axis data for Y Channel
• Click the Projection button to set projection – Options: Projected, Geographic and Unknown
• You can set up a projected coordinate from the existing coordinate
Step 5- Grid data • Go to the Grid and Image menu bar • Select the gridding type you want in the gridding option • Choose the file to grid
Step 6- Make a Map • Go to Map Tools • In the Base Map options, select Draw Base Map • A Base Map Layout Pop up appears – Choose the settings that best fits the type of map you want and add other changes e.g line thickness, line colour and others.
