INTRODUCTION In sending these remarkable effects to me to write up, illustrate and publish, Mr. Grant wrote—"MANY PERSONS HAVE SAID THAT WITH THESE IDEAS I HAVE DEVELOPED, AND WRITTEN UP BY BURLING HULL, FOREMOST MAGICAL WRITER OF ALL TIMES—IT WOULD MAKE AN IDEAL COMBINATION. SO I AM PUTTING IT TO THE TEST." I appreciate the compliment but I am quite sure that the marvelously ingenious ideas introduced in these tricks could quite capably stand alone—so I have merely endeavored to do them justice by clear-cut description and adequate illustration. The Reader no doubt knows my opinion of Mr. U.F. GRANT which I have given in previous publications—I consider him "The Prince of Ideas in Magic." The Reader will remember what a sensation was created by that whirlwind success among current magical books entitled, "NINE GREAT CARD TRICKS" dealing with the amazing effects which could be achieved by the application of DOUBLE BACKED PLAYING CARDS introduced into an ordinary or borrowed pack of cards of a similar design. This book includes some amazing deceptions with DOUBLE FACE CARDS (cards with faces printed on both sides) which may be introduced into almost any standard pack (and frequently a borrowed one) much more readily than could double back cards—for there is far less difference in the FACES of playing cards which are more or less standard in design than in the BACKS of such cards. The sleight differences are not readily noticed, particularly by one who is not looking for it because the cards in most of these effects are kept IN MOTION while doing the trick. Also in the majority of the feats, only the one card is seen at a given time (as in the reversed experiments) and thus close comparison is impossible. By preparing (according to the directions in this book) your own Double Face Cards, several in various types and finishes such as, (1) smooth finish (2) Linen finish (3) Bridge Size etc., and carrying them in an envelope in the pocket one can easily match up a card with a pack found at the home of the host. Thus an amazing reputation for presenting almost unbelievable miracles in card magic may be established—and on the basis of the amazed remark "Why he did them all with my own pack of playing cards." For Platform, club and stage shows, the performer may use GIANT CARDS with most astonishing effectiveness in presenting the majority of the effects in this treatise. In Giant Cards, there is the advantage of being able to obtain a PERFECT MATCH in the nature of Double Face Cards and Double Back Cards which are printed by the same manufacturer who produces the regular packs of Giant Cards, which are sold by some 22 leading magical dealers, here and abroad. The Giant Cards under consideration are those printed for conjuring uses bearing the "Hindu Head" design backs and containing 40 cards to the pack, no court cards being

4

included. These cards one can obtain from any standard magical dealer; Aces with indifferent spot cards on the back. Cards with Aces on both sides. Cards with a back design but a blank face. Cards with a humorous joker design. Cards with Spot cards, 5 & 7 on opposite sides. Cards with the regulation back design on both sides in Red. Cards with a regulation back design on one side and the word "STUNG" printed on the face, as required in various tricks of the "Come on" type. These Giant cards sell for 20¢ each or 10 for $1.00 at any magic shop. In offering this choice card material it is felt that we are making a valuable contribution to the available literature on card magic. Owing to the diversity of the principles involved, we feel confident that this book will appeal to the myriad lovers of clean-cut card conjuring. Most sincerely yours, BURLING HULL

HOW TO MAKE DOUBLE FACE CARDS A few double face cards (cards with faces printed on both sides of the cards) are now obtainable in GENUINE PLAYING CARDS, printed by a regular manufacturer of playing cards. For instance; the Aces of Hearts, Clubs and Diamonds with indifferent spot cards on the other side. Also red backed cards with BACKS printed on both sides of the cards. These are in the BRIDGE SIZE cards—which are at present extremely popular with magicians. They can be added to an ordinary deck—or slipped into a borrowed with a similar finish. It is not ascertainable how long these cards will be obtainable for I understand that the supply is limited. The publisher has a few of these genuine cards on hand and it is his intention to slip one of these cards in each of the first few books issued (but only so far as the supply lasts) so that the reader may immediately begin to try out some of the amazing effects contained in this book. IN NO CASE ARE THESE CARDS TO BE REGARDED AS A REGULAR FEATURE OF THE BOOK. The book is complete in itself and does not include the cards as part of the purchase. The reader will doubtless be interested in making up a supply of double faced cards to match his own favorite deck. Therefore the following instructions are given for his guidance. Use cheaper grade enameled cards for best results as the coating on them is more suitable for the process. Soak the cards 15 to 20 minutes in COLD WATER—never hot water as it will spoil the finish. In a few minutes you can peel the top layer of paper off the cards quite freely. While STILL WET, place the two split sections which you desire to unite, together— without adding any glue for there is SUFFICIENT GLUE on the cards to cement them together. Place between THICK WHITE squares of blotting paper, cut a little larger than the cards—and place a weight on them for a few hours. Remove them and place between fresh dry blotter for 5 hours. Next remove them and place between CLEAN WHITE paper—put a VERY HEAVY weight on them and leave them over-night. I use two flat pieces of steel about 3x4 inches purchased at a hardware store and placing my cards between them I clamp them in a vise for the final pressing as above, and leave them over-night. This way the cards will come out FLAT and smooth without injury to the gloss or finish of the cards.

If I can be of any further assistance to the Reader, I will be glad to have him write to me on the matter of Double faced cards. Most sincerely yours, BURLING HULL

"DOUBLE MAGIC" TRICKS WITH A DOUBLE FACE CARD By U. F. Grant

NO. 1 A NEW CARD MONTE Have a double face card in your right side trousers pocket, we will say it is the ACE OF HEARTS on one side and KING OF DIAMONDS on the other. Borrow a deck and remove the two above cards from the deck, stating that these two cards are very difficult to remember—and you would like to test someone's memory with a very odd experiment. Have a man step forward and place the two cards in his SIDE COAT POCKET. Next remove the Ace of Hearts from his pocket, show it freely—place in your trouser pocket IN UNDER THE DOUBLE FACE CARD. Now ask what card he has left in his pocket. Naturally he will say the KING OF DIAMONDS, ask if he would be willing to bet on it etc. Have him remove the card and of course he is found to be correct. Now state you will try the second test. Remove the DOUBLE FACE CARD from your pocket, ACE OF HEARTS SIDE UPPERMOST and they will believe this to be the REGULAR card you placed in the pocket a few moments previous. Place this back in man's pocket alongside of the unprepared KING OF DIAMONDS. Reach into his pocket, THIS TIME REMOVE THE DOUBLE FACE CARD SO THE KING OF DIAMONDS SIDE IS SHOWING. Show it freely and impress on everyone's mind you are placing the KING OF DIAMONDS in your pocket. Ask man what card he has left in his pocket. He will reply the ACE OF HEARTS, ask if he is certain. Build it up, then have him remove the card. TO HIS SURPRISE HE HAS THE KING OF DIAMONDS. Reach into your pocket and remove the unprepared ACE OF HEARTS and toss it on the table. Note:—At the finish as well as the start the cards are unprepared. As you can use a borrowed deck, this makes a very mystifying stunt.

NO. 2 A BOOK TEST Again we will say the double face card in this case is the ACE OF HEARTS. To prepare, remove the duplicate KING OF DIAMONDS from the deck and place to one side. Now locate the regular ACE OF HEARTS in the deck and place it near the center of the deck REVERSED between two cards—we will say for example a FIVE SPOT and a SEVEN SPOT of any suit. Have the DOUBLE FACE card on the BOTTOM of the deck — so the

8

ACE OF HEARTS side is showing. Secretly pick up a book or magazine and note the 7th WORD on PAGE FIVE —and remember this word. You are all set. PERFORMANCE Start by writing on a piece of paper the word you noted—fold the paper and have someone hold it. Now turn deck FACE UP, Remove the DOUBLE FACE ACE. Turn deck so BACKS are UP, With ACE still FACE UP have someone insert it near the CENTER of the deck. Turn deck FACE UP — and SPREAD cards out on the table FACE UP. Show the card REVERSED, the 5 and 7. As it is the UNPREPARED ACE that shows REVERSED you can spread out rest of deck and call attention to the face no other cards are reversed. This is possible as the DOUBLE ACE that WAS reversed—now shows as the KING OF DIAMONDS. Then casually pick up the book or magazine you noted word in. As they cut the pack at a FIVE AND SEVEN spot, have the spectator open book to PAGE 5 and note the 7th WORD. That is the very word you predicted on the paper held by a person in the audience. *This feat may also be performed with Giant Cards for Platform Shows.

NO. 3 THE CHANGING CARD Again we will say the double face card is the ACE OF HEARTS on one side and KING OF DIAMONDS on the other. Have this card SECOND FROM THE BOTTOM of the deck— so the KING OF DIAMONDS side will be in the deck REVERSED. On the bottom of the deck have the REGULAR ACE OF HEARTS and you are all ready. Riffle shuffle the deck, keeping these TWO CARDS on the BOTTOM. Now grasp the deck in the LEFT HAND between the THUMB and FINGERS at the EDGE of the deck NEAR the TOP. RIGHT HAND takes the LOWER END of the DECK AND pulls out about TWO THIRDS of deck (from the bottom). Then LEFT HAND keeps pulling cards off the TOP of the deck in right hand ON TOP OF THOSE IN LEFT HAND. This is known as the Hindu Shuffle. As you do this have anyone say, "Stop" at any time. When they say, "Stop", tell them to NOTE BOTTOM CARD of stack in RIGHT HAND. This will be the original card that was on the BOTTOM all the time. But to the spectator it appears as if the card was originally in the center of the deck. (SEE ILLUSTRATIONS SHOWING THE OPERATION OF THE HINDU CUT-SHUFFLE MOVEMENTS)

9

The spectator notes the card (which is the ACE OF HEARTS). Drop this pile onto the rest of deck—and square the deck up. Go thru a little hocus-pocus—then fan deck out BACKS UP. State that the noted card is now REVERSED. But as the reversed card is the KING OF DIAMONDS. Spectator will claim that you are wrong. Remove the REVERSED KING OF DIAMONDS at the same time cutting deck right where it was reversed. (This secretly brings the REGULAR ACE OF HEARTS to the TOP of the deck). The DOUBLE FACE card is now on the table, so the KING OF DIAMOND SIDE is showing. Remove any TWO cards from the deck—place FACE TO FACE—and insert the KING OF DIAMONDS (double face card) BETWEEN THEM. Snap an elastic around these cards— and in doing so REVERSE THE CARDS OR TURN THEM OVER under cover of placing the band on.

10

Go thru a little more hocus-pocus. Then remove the elastic band and fan the three cards out. The KING OF DIAMONDS is changed into the selected card (The ACE OF HEARTS).

Throw the other two cards on the table and request spectators to examine them—and while they are looking at the cards TOP CHANGE THIS DOUBLE FACE CARD FOR THE REGULAR ACE OF HEARTS (which you have had on the top of the deck). This move is easily made under cover of making a gesture toward the cards on the table when asking the spectators to pick them up. Drop the REGULAR ACE OF HEARTS on the table—and no doubt it will be picked up and examined also. *THIS FEAT MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.

NO. 4 IMPROVED ANEMANN BURNED CARD We will consider that you are still using the DOUBLE FACE CARD with the ACE OF HEART on one side and THE KING OF DIAMONDS on the other. Place this SECOND from the BOTTOM—so ACE OF HEARTS side is REVERSED. On the bottom of the deck place the REGULAR ACE OF HEARTS. Fan deck out FACE UP and show that there are no DUPLICATES—and incidently that all the cards are ONE WAY will be observed at the same time. Close deck, square up— and turn pack so that BACKS are UP. By the force employed in Trick No. 3, have a spectator call, "Stop" and note the bottom card of the cut, as previously—which is the ACE OF HEARTS. Square deck up then fan the cards out and show the ACE OF HEARTS has REVERSED itself. Throw this on the table FACE UP—at the same time cutting the deck at that point to bring the REGULAR ACE OF HEARTS to the TOP of the deck. Place the DOUBLE FACE ACE in an envelope and burn it. While it is burning (by having the spectator take the sealed envelope and light it with a match it will keep his attention on the matter in hand)—while at the same time you can SECRETLY REVERSE the REGULAR ACE OF HEARTS at the BOTTOM of the deck—and make a cut bring it to the CENTER of pack.

11

After card and envelope is completely destroyed, have someone spread the cards out and show it has returned to the pack FULLY RESTORED and REVERSED in the deck. This is a baffling effect for you can use a borrowed deck at the start of the trick, (by simply inserting your card into the deck) and as THERE ARE NO APPARENT REVERSED or DUPLICATE cards when you show the pack before the start of the trick. Also at the finish everything may be examined. *(THIS FEAT MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.)

NO. 5 SPIRIT MESSAGE In this trick you need a double face card that is the SAME ON BOTH SIDES. We will say it is the ACE OF HEARTS on each side. On one side write any message you wish to have appear. Have this card so the other side (without the writing) is facing same as the rest of the deck. Fan out deck FACES UP. Remove this DOUBLE FACE ACE and two other cards. Calling attention to the fact that none have any writing on etc. Then in the same manner as in Trick No. 3, place the double face card between the other two cards and snap an elastic band around them. In a few moments, part them, and show A MESSAGE is now written ACROSS THE FACE OF THE ACE.

*(THIS FEAT MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.)

NO. 6 A TRANSPOSITION Again we will say the double face card is the ACE OF HEARTS on one side and KING OF DIAMOND on the other. Have this on bottom of deck so ACE OF HEARTS side is showing. Beneath it place the regular KING OF DIAMONDS from the deck.

12

Borrow a hat. Remove these two cards and show them. Drop them in the hat. As you do so ALSO DROP ANY EXTRA CARD from the top of the deck into the hat. Do it crudely so audience will detect you doing it.

Reach in hat and say you will remove one of the cards. Remove the DOUBLE FACE CARD so the KING OF DIAMONDS side is showing. (This leaves the regular KING OF DIAMONDS in the hat as well as some other card.) Now place the DOUBLE FACE KING OF DIAMONDS you have in your hand in a goblet. Cover the goblet with a pocket handkerchief. As you do so REVERSE THE GOBLET SECRETLY SO THE ACE OF HEARTS side of the card will be at the front. Call attention to the KING OF DIAMONDS in the goblet and the ACE OF HEART in the HAT. State you will cause them to change places. Remove handkerchief and show the ACE OF HEART is now in the glass. Walk over to the hat and remove the KING OF DIAMOND. At this point some 'wise boy' in the crowd will say, "You have another ACE OF HEARTS in the hat." Let him reach in and he will find a totally different card in the hat. Or better still you can use a blank card with the word "STUNG" on it. *(THIS FEAT MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.)

NO. 7 RISING CARD GAG A double face card also works in well with the rising card trick. Say one of the cards that are to rise is the ACE OF HEARTS. Have the double face card rise out of glass so the KING OF DIAMOND side is facing audience and when the spectator says that is not his card, remove it from the glass. Passing your hand over the face of the card reverse it and changing it into the selected card—the ACE OF HEARTS.

13

NO. 8 REMOVE SPOTS As a good interlude in any trick to rub spots off of a card, have a double face card, say, a Seven Spot on one side and a Five Spot on the other. Force a REGULAR Five Spot on a person. Then produce the double face card (seven side showing) saying, that is the card. Spectator will say it is a Five Spot. Reply, "What are a couple of Spots among friends." Rubbing face of card REVERSE it and show it has changed into a Five Spot.

NO. 9 CHINESE MIND READING In this clever stunt you require a double face card that is the SAME ON BOTH SIDES. We will say it is the ACE OF HEARTS on each side. On one side write several Chinese figures. Have this on the deck so the unprepared side of ACE OF HEARTS is face out. Now on top of the deck have the REGULAR ACE OF HEARTS from the deck, but on the face of this have DUPLICATE Chinese letters. You are now all set for an amazing effect. Step forward and call attention to the Ace at bottom of deck.—Have any person write any question on face of card, leaving it on face of deck to use as a writing surface (then they will not turn card over and note it is double faced). Borrow a hat. This ACE is lifted and with it the card beneath by the double lift, BUT DO IT CRUDELY SO IT WILL BE NOTED. Drop cards (the two held as one) crudely into the hat. Now say you will call on the Spirit of an Old Chinese Mind Reader to answer the question. Reach in hat and remove the ACE OF HEARTS so the side with Chinese letters on, is face out. Show the answer in Chinese.

The wise spectators will want to see the hat. Allow them to look in hat and they find another card, NOT A DUPLICATE ACE AS THEY EXPECTED. While they are doing this you can TOP CHANGE the double Ace for the UNPREPARED ACE with the DUPLICATE CHINESE LETTERS ON IT.

14

Then you can apparently decipher the Chinese answer (giving a suitable answer to the question asked) and handing the card to the party, say, "Read it yourself and see if I have translated it correctly." *(THIS FEAT CAN ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.)

NO. 10 A HAT AND CARD CHANGE We will say the double face card is the ACE OF HEARTS on one side and KING OF DIAMONDS on the other. Have this on BOTTOM of deck so ACE OF HEARTS side is FACE OUT. Next to it have the REGULAR KING OF DIAMONDS from the deck. The regular ACE OF HEARTS of the deck is placed NEAR the CENTER of the deck REVERSED. Remove the two cards from BOTTOM of deck. Place them in a hat. Reach in the hat and remove the DOUBLE FACE card so the KING OF DIAMONDS SIDE is showing (Now apparently the ACE OF HEARTS is left in the hat). This card just removed from the hat (The apparent King of Diamond) is vanished by any method desired, such as a card box, or in a glass of water with celluloid shell.

After the vanish, walk over to the hat and remove the card and hand to anyone. Now audience believes the ACE OF HEARTS is still in the hat. Make a wave over the hat and apparently cause the ACE OF HEARTS to vanish from the hat! Allow the spectators to examine the hat. The missing ACE OF HEARTS is found back in the deck REVERSED. This makes a novel combination. *(THIS FEAT MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.)

15

NO. 11 THE FUNNY DECK In your upper RIGHT vest pocket have a BLANK card. Then borrow a deck and secretly palm on a DOUBLE FACE CARD. We will say it is the ACE OF HEARTS one side and KING OF DIAMONDS the other. It is palmed on so the ACE OF HEARTS side is facing same as rest of deck. With this card added into deck—before starting to use deck run thru it saying you want to see if all the cards are there etc. You discover there are two ACE OF HEART's in the deck, and show them. Run cards out BACK UP and say "Why there is even the KING OF DIAMONDS reversed in the deck. I will place that in my pocket." As you place it apparently in your upper vest pocket, coat hides the action of really placing it in INSIDE COAT POCKET. Soon as this is done, allow coat to open so they can see just the white TOP EDGE of blank card in pocket. Then say "Better still we will put it back in the deck, you may need it. Pull it out and—it is a BLANK calling card. When the startled onlookers, look thru the deck they find it is quite complete and has no duplicate cards.

NO. 12 U-DO-AS-I-DO In this stunt you start with five cards in your hand (fanned out) face up—with the SECOND CARD FROM THE RIGHT (unknown to audience) a DOUBLE FACE card. Another person has five unprepared cards in hand face up in the same manner as you. Spectator is instructed to do exactly the same as you do. Close your fan with cards FACE UP. Take top card and place it on the bottom REVERSED. Next top card on the bottom, WITHOUT REVERSING it. Next on the bottom REVERSED. Next one on the bottom. Now WITHOUT TURNING THE CARDS OVER fan them out and show THREE are face UP and TWO face DOWN. Have other person fan his out and his are in the same manner. Again close your stack and have him do the same—and follow you again. Now take the TOP card (which is face up) and REVERSE it (that is, turn it face down) on top of the stack. Now TURN THE COMPLETE STACK OVER. The card on TOP now is FACE DOWN. Lift this up, turn it over and place it back on top, FACE UP. Now fan your stack out and ALL FIVE CARDS will be FACE UP. But when the other person fans his cards out he will always have ONE CARD REVERSED even though he made every move you made. This is possible thanks to the double face card you have in your stack. Place the double face card in position again and repeat it as many times as desired. The more you work it and the closer they watch, the more mystifying it becomes.

16

*(THIS FEAT CAN ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.)

NO. 13 ODD & EVEN In this stunt you require a double face card that has an odd number of spots on one side and an even number on the other. For example, we will say the FIVE OF CLUBS on one side and EIGHT OF CLUBS on the other. Secretly add this card to the deck and you are prepared. Take the deck and openly remove a card, but keeping it covered with the hand telling spectators you do not want them to see what card you remove. You really remove the DOUBLE FACE card and place it in your side coat pocket. Now fan the deck out on the table BACKS UP and have a person remove a card AND WITHOUT LOOKING AT IT place it in his pocket. Now state the card in your pocket will match in spots—that is; either odd or even to the card picked out. He is to call a Jack odd, Queen even and King odd. If he says he has an odd card you bring your double face card out so the ODD SIDE is showing or vice-versa. Now all will believe you have an extra card in your pocket, finally allow them to look in pocket and see it is empty. This stunt may be repeated several times.

NO. 14 U-FIND-IT For this novel little mystery you require a double face card that is the same on both sides, say the ACE OF HEART on each side. Have this on the BOTTOM of the deck. On TOP of deck have the REGULAR UNPREPARED ACE OF HEARTS and you are all set. As in trick No. 3 force the fake ACE OF HEARTS, then cut it to the center of the deck. Now have some one step forward. Say you are going to make a Magician out of him. Have him stand to one side of you. Fan the deck facing the audience, this is so the backs of the cards are facing the person helping you. In fanning the cards do not fan the top three or four—so audience WILL NOT SEE the regular ACE at the top of the deck. After

17

fanning the deck out tell party to name any card. He will see the ACE OF HEARTS reversed and will know you want him to name that card. As you ask him to name a card, kind of point to that one. He names the ACE OF HEARTS. Ask if that is the card that was selected and they will say Yes, then tell him to point to the ACE OF HEARTS and he does. This you pick out of the fan.

To the audience this is very mystifying AS THE ACE IS ALSO FACING THEM—so they believe all the BACKS of the cards are facing the person. As party takes his seat, ask him not to tell anyone how it is done, etc. At the time under cover of his body (as he passes in front of you) top change the double ACE for the UNPREPARED one on top of the deck. Then you can show card freely front and back. * (THIS FEAT MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.)

NO. 15 THE SPOTTER CARD For this stunt we will say the double face card is a FIVE SPOT on one side and a SEVEN SPOT on the other. Place this in the deck so it will be FIFTH FROM THE bottom— and so the FIVE SPOT side will be reversed in the deck. Step forward and riffle shuffle the cards keeping the BOTTOM five in order. Fan out deck, FACE UP and show no cards are reversed. Now close fan and square deck up. Then partly fan deck out BACKS UP, NEAR THE TOP HALF, have a card selected. Have this card returned to the TOP of the deck. Cut the deck giving it a complete cut. This loses the selected card some place near the center of the deck. Now command a card to reverse itself in the deck and locate the selected card. Fan deck out backs up and you discover a five spot reversed in the deck. Remove this five spot and cut the deck where you remove it. Now right from there count down five cards and the FIFTH card BELOW the REVERSED one—will be the selected card. (THIS FEAT MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.)

18

NO. 16 NAME SPELLING A double face card is also very good for the name spelling trick. We will say you are going to work the trick for a person by the name of "SMITH". This has five letters in it. Place the DOUBLE FACE card FIFTH from the BOTTOM, and you are all set. Fan out deck face up and show no cards are reversed. Close deck and turn backs up. Fan out top half only and have a card selected. Have it returned to the top of the deck. Next cut the deck, giving it a complete cut. Now all that remains is to fan deck out, BACKS UP and show the card REVERSED. Right from here spell the person's name by removing a card for each letter of the name. On the last letter turn over the card, which is the SELECTED card. *(THIS FEAT MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.)

NO. 17 A ROYAL ROMANCE For this little romance you require a double face card that is a QUEEN on one side and a BLANK on the other. Show this card as the QUEEN and along with it show a unprepared KING and DEUCE. Patter along to the effect that many years ago there lived a KING and a QUEEN and one day the King gave the Queen the DEUCE. As you say this point to the DEUCE. Have the cards so the Queen is the FRONT of the stack. Then close the fan up. Pass your hand over the face of the QUEEN in the same manner you would for a color change, but really reverse the QUEEN on the front of the stack. Say "All was fine in the Royal Family till the King gave the Queen the Deuce." Then she in turn becomes peeved and went away never to return." As you bring your hand away the Queen card is seen to be BLANK and other two cards are shown freely.

NO. 18 A MIXUP, CORRECTED Here is a baffling method of removing spots from a card. Say the double face card is the FIVE on one side and SEVEN on the other. On the FIVE SPOT side stick a couple of extra spots with wax, so it will appear as a SEVEN SPOT. Then produce card so regular SEVEN SPOT side is showing. Step up to person and have him run his hand over the face of the card and see if they can rub the spots off. This proves all is fair and the spots on the card are printed, not stuck. As you step back secretly REVERSE the card. It still appears as a SEVEN SPOT.

19

Now you can flip the two spots off in full view and change it into a FIVE spot. This is very mystifying and the best spot changing card method that has come out. *(THIS FEAT MAY ALSO BE PERFORMED WITH GIANT CARDS FOR PLATFORM SHOWS.)

20
