DAT HA N HA P

DATHAN HAP A relaxing garter-stitch knit, allowing you to explore colour and striping in your own leisurely way. Dathan is a Gaelic word for colourful.

yarn

special techniques

Shade changes This pattern involves many shade changes. Twist the old and new yarns together at the transition point of each shade and pause to weave in your ends as you go every few rows.

Kate Davies Designs Milarrochy Tweed (70% Wool; 30% Mohair; 100m / 109yds per 25g ball) 1 ball of each of the following shades: Lochan; Ardlui; Smirr; Campion; Cranachan; Gloamin’; Stockiemuir; Garth; Hare; Bruce; Hirst; Birkin; Horseback Brown; Tarbet; Buckthorn

Working in stripe sequence This design allows you to play with colour in a diverting and relaxing way and to knit a hap that’s completely unique to you. You’ll need to devise your own stripe sequence (or your own approach to striping) before you start. The only rules are that each stripe uses 2, 4 or 6 rows and that all 15 shades are used. Use one of the following methods to develop your stripe sequence, or feel free to develop your own method. No method is the ‘best’ one, and no sequence could be described as being ‘better’ than another. The point is to simply choose an approach to striping that suits you, follow the pattern, play with colour… see what happens… and enjoy yourself.

pleases you. Try http://www.randomstripes.com or http://www.biscuitsandjam.com/stripe_maker.php

Numerical stripe sequence Using the attached table, designate each shade a number from 1-15 - and knit your stripes in a regular row sequence such as: 3, 1, 2, 1 1, 2, 3 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1 following your allocated numerical shade sequence.

pattern notes

Random striping You might choose to knit your stripes entirely randomly. Use the ball bands or write the shade names on 15 cards, and the stripe widths (2, 4, or 6 rows) on another set of 3 cards. Pick cards / ball bands at random to select shade and width of stripe to knit next.

This garter stitch hap begins by casting on a few stitches at the centre back neck. Stitches are then increased at an even rate to form a large, elongated triangle. This pattern is designed specifically to allow the knitter to explore colour in their own way, following their own preferred stripe sequence, using 15 shades of Milarrochy Tweed.

abbreviations

Combine predictability with chance Combine the numerical and random methods by deciding on a fixed sequence for the width of the stripes and then selecting shades at random. Alternatively, you might determine a fixed order for the shades, then choose your stripe widths randomly. Stripe generator tool Use a simple online tool to generate ‘random’ stripes for you. Enter the shades, stripe widths, and the number of rows you’d like your sequence to run over. Experiment by refreshing the generator until you find a sequence that

finishing Weave in any remaining ends to the WS of the work. Soak hap in cool water for 20 mins, removing water between dry towels. Pin out flat, ensuring that the garter stitch structure of the fabric remains fairly dense and squishy. Allow to fully dry.

Enjoy your Dathan hap!

These 4 rows set the pattern: working in your preferred stripe sequence, breaking off and joining in yarn throughout; slipping first st of every row; increasing at edges and centre on every RS row, at edges only on alternate WS rows and increasing 10 sts every 4 rows.

bind off With above-gauge size needle, bind off using 2 st i-cord method as foll: *K1, k2togtbl, return 2 sts from rh to lh needle; repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2togtbl, and fasten off.
