Review of Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Joint Australian/ New Zealand Standards are subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It is important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edition, and any amendments thereto. Full details of all Joint Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazines ‘The Australian Standard’ and ‘Standards New Zealand’, which subscribing members receive, and which give details of new publications, new editions and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards. Suggestions for improvements to Joint Standards, addressed to the head office of either Standards Australia or Standards New Zealand, are welcomed. Notification of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in a Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard should be made without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.
This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 97074.

This edition of the Standard differs from the 1993 edition as follows: (a)
The number of wires to be tested has been specified.
(b)
Measurement of the diameter of conductor and armour wires has been separately specified.
(c)
This edition is published as a Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard.
The term ‘informative’ has been used in this Standard to define the application of the appendix to which it applies. An ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and guidance.

1.1 SCOPE This Standard sets out the methods of testing conductors, metallic sheath and armour for insulated electric cables and flexible cords. 1.2 APPLICATION The individual Standards for particular types of cables, cords and conductors specify which tests from the range herein are applicable, and also the category of and criteria for such tests. NOTE: Details of the AS/NZS 1660 series of Standards are given in Appendix A.
1.3 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS Standard:
The following documents are referred to in this
AS 2331 Methods of test for metallic and related coatings 2331.2.1 Method 2.1: Average thickness tests—Dissolution methods—Strip and weigh, and analytical 2706
Numerical values — Rounding and interpretation of limiting values
1.4 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions given in the relevant cable Standards apply. 1.5 TESTING TEMPERATURE Unless otherwise specified, all tests shall be carried out in an ambient temperature of 23 ±5°C. 1.6 SELECTION OF SPECIMENS All specimens used for testing shall be taken at least 300 mm from the end of a factory length of finished cable, flexible cable or flexible cord. Unless otherwise specified the number of individual wires to be tested shall be the square root of the number of wires in the conductor or armour rounded to the nearest whole number.
