AMIGURUMI PATTERN – Cheshire Cat by CreativeChaosofMargaux

Make your very own impish looking Cheshire Cat-inspired Goth/Emo doll. With the indicated yarn and hook size, you can make about a 9-inch tall doll from toes to tip of the ears plus about an 11-inch long slouchy pointy hat. MATERIALS • acrylic yarns, 4 ply with your choice of colors (for reference, Yarns used in pictures are Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Dark Orchid for the pompom, stripes and outer ears, Orchid for the hair and Dark Orchid for the highlights, Black for the shoes, Aran for the head and hands, and Dream Weaver Twin Pack Acrylic Yarns in Pink for the stripes and inner ears) • 2.75 mm crochet hook • buttons for the eyes or safety eyes with your choice of colors and sizes (15mm buttons for the eyes) • fiberfill • a pair of scissors • tapestry needle for sewing • lighter, thinner yarn (to sew the eyes and the rest of the face) • acrylic paints • paintbrush • hair straightener or curling iron • fine-toothed comb for brushing the hair • embellishments such as buttons on the dress (yellow buttons to represent the Cat’s eyes in the animated Disney version) and pompoms (optional) ABBREVIATIONS ch = chain st =stitch sl st = slip stitch sc = single crochet stitch rep = repeat hdc = half double crochet stitch

dec = decrease inc = increase scfl = single crochet in front loop only scbl = single crochet in back loop only (..) = repeat the space in brackets the given number of times [..] = total number of stitches

Note: Remember to add stuffing to body, head and legs as you go up higher in the rows. It will be difficult to stuff once the opening gets narrower. To achieve the stripes, change color after every two rows. Begin with Dark Orchid for R1 and R2 then changed to Pink in R3 and R4 of the body and so on and so forth.

BODY Round 1: 6 sc into a magic ring [6] R2: inc 6x [12] R3: inc 12x [24] R4: (sc in the next 3 st, inc in the next st) rep 6x [30] R5: sc in all 30 st [30] R6: (sc in the next 3 st, dec) rep 6x [24] R7-R8: sc in all 24 st [24] R9: (sc in the next 2 st, dec) rep 6x [18] R10: (sc in the next st, dec) rep 6x [12] continue to head HEAD R11: inc 12x [24] R12: (sc in the next 3 st, inc in the next st) rep 6x [30] R13: (sc in the next 2 st, inc, sc in the next 2 st) rep 6x [36] R14: (sc in the next 5 st, inc in the next st) rep 6x [42] R15: (sc in the next 3 st, inc, sc in the next 3 st) rep 6x [48] R16-R20: sc in all 48 st [48] R21: (sc in the next 6 st, dec) rep 6x [42] R22: (sc in the next 5 st, dec) rep 6x [36] R23: (sc in the next 4 st, dec) rep 6x [30] R24: (sc in the next 3 st, dec) rep 6x [24] R25: dec, rep 12x [12] R26: dec, rep 6x [6] Close off. Fasten off and weave in the end. SHOES (make 2) Round 1: 6 sc into a magic ring [6] R2: inc 6x [12] R3: inc 12x [24] R4: scbl in all 24 st [24] R5: sc in the next 6 st, dec 6x, sc in the next 6 st [18] R6: sc in the next 3 st, dec 6x, sc in the next 3 st [12] R7: sc in the next 3 st, dec 3x, sc in the next 3 st [9] R8: scfl in all 9 st [9] …Cut, weave in the ends. Continue to legs LEGS (make 2) (Begin with Pink) To connect the shoes with the legs: R9: in R7, scbl all the stitches -- pull through loop of the yarn (start at the back of the shoes) in the back loop, then sc 9 all the way around. R10 – R17: sc in all 9 st [9] SKIRT Use Dark Orchid for R1 to continue the color of the waist. Start with the skirt with the doll upside down so that the “correct” side of the skirt will be on the front and not underneath. (see direction of arrow in picture below) and start at the back of the doll so that the spirals, when you change colors, will not be seen in front of the doll. R1: (WAIST) In the sc post between R5 and R6 of the body, sc 30 all the way around each post. Because the rows are in spiral, the post you started at and the post that you will end at will not meet. To solve this, sc the last st in diagonal to meet the first sc you made in the same row. Continue with the rows.

R2: sc in all 30 st [30] R3: (sc in the next 4 st, inc in the next st) rep 6x [36] R4 – R5: sc in all 36 st [36] R6: (sc in the next 5 st, inc in the next st) rep 6x [42] R7: sc in all 42 st [42]

Sew the eyes (between R15 and R16 of the head). Use a lighter, thinner yarn to sew the buttons and design the face. In case lighter yarn is not available, separate the 4 ply yarn into 2 and use 2 ply for the eyebrows, mouth and nose. Here are some samples of facial expressions. After some testing, the doll used for the pattern ended with the stitched nose and a wider mouth.

HANDS (make 2) (no need to stuff or stuff lightly if preferred) Round 1: make a magic ring and do 6 sc [6] R2-R3: sc in all 6 st [6] Continue to arms ARMS/SLEEVES Begin with Dark Orchid to also end with Dark Orchid to match the uppermost part of the body R4- R13: sc in all 6 st [6] Close off, leave a tail and attach on to each side of R9 and R10 of the body CUFFS Hdc all the way around the sc post of R4 or the “wrists” COLLAR Sc, ch 2 all the way around the R10 sc posts of the body. POINTY HAT Start with Fuchsia for the stripes if you want to end with Dark Orchid color as the edge of the hat. Change color after every two rows. TIP: There is no need to pull the sc stitches for the hat as tightly as the

stitches for the body because there is no need to stuff the hat. This is also to ensure that the hat won’t be too tight on the head. Round 1: make a magic ring and do 4 sc [4] R2-R4: sc in all 4 rows [4] R5: (sc, inc) rep 2x [6] R6-R8: sc in all 6 st [6] R9: (sc, inc) rep 3x [9] R10: sc in all 9 st [9] R11: (sc in the next 2 st, inc) rep 4x [12] R12-R16: sc in all 12 st [12] R17: (sc in the next st, inc) rep 6x [18] R18-R22: sc in all 18 st [18] R23: (sc in the next 2 st, inc) rep 6x [24] R24-R26: sc in all 24 st [24] R27: (sc in the next 3 st, inc) rep 6x [30] R28-R30: sc in all 30 st [30] R31: (sc in the next 4 st, inc) rep 6x [36] R32-R34: sc in all 36 st [36] R35: (sc in the next 5 st, inc) rep 6x [42] R36: sc in all 42 st [42] R37: (sc in the next 6 st, inc) rep 6x [48] R38-R40: sc in all 48 st [48] Measure the hat against the head and ensure that it is a bit on the loose side so there will be some space for the hair. Add two more rows with 48 st in opposite color as R39 and R40 if preferred that hat cover more of the upper head. Set aside and work on the hair. HAIR Cut several strands double the length of the hair you want. 8-inches or more would be sufficient. Anything less will result in much shorter hair after combing. Fold each strand, attach strand per strand and onto head per stitch. Make sure that you attach to where the bald spot and the knots of the strands will be hidden by the hat when you attach it later on. Attach to 3-4 rows of the upper head, depending on preference of hair thickness (2 row strands will result in very thin hair once the strands have been ironed). Leave as is for a “raggedy” look, or continue to comb the strands. Comb through the strands gently, starting at the ends to separate the ply. Do this in sections. Continue combing until you reach the top, almost to where the knots are. Some yarn fibers and fluff will be caught in the comb and this is all right. TIP: Use the fibers that were combed out as light or additional stuffing for future projects to avoid wastage. Comb through the entire hair until all the ply have separated and knots have been removed. Leave hair as is if you prefer the fluffy, fuzzy look for your doll, or continue with ironing the strands.

Iron with hair straightener or curling iron in sections and with care. Do this until the strands are straight and shiny. Be careful. Too much heat will burn and turn parts of the strands brown.

Trim hair to preferred length. Add a few strands of yarn of darker or different color for highlights.

CAT EARS Outer ears (Make 2) Round 1: make a magic ring and do 4 sc [4] R2: (sc, inc) rep 2x [6] R3: (sc, inc) rep 3x [9] R4: (sc in the next 2 st, inc) rep 4x [12] R5: (sc in the next st, inc) rep 6x [18] R6: (sc in the next 2 st, inc) rep 6x [24] R7-R8: sc in all 24 st [24] R9: (sc in the next 3 st, inc) rep 6x [30] Inner ears (Make 2) Ch11 R1: sc 10, starting at the 2nd chain from the hook, turn R2: sc 8, starting from the 3rd sc from hook, turn R3: sc 6, starting from the 3rd sc from hook, turn R4: sc 4, starting from the 3rd sc from hook, turn R5: sc 2, starting from the 3rd sc from hook, turn R6: sc on the 2nd and last ch from hook, pull the yarn all the way through the sc, cut and leave a tail end to attach onto the front of the outer ear Attach the ears AFTER you have sewn the hat onto the head. Make sure to sew the ears all the way through the head to keep them in place. ADDITIONAL EMBELLISHMENTS/MODIFICATION Attach buttons on the body and sew on shoelaces.

Add pompom to the tip of the hat.

PAINTING THE EYES (Purple and Black) Get just a very small amount of paint with your brush and wipe on rag to ensure that there is very little paint on the brush. It is important to start coloring very lightly, first behind the button, and then spread towards the outer edges. Add more paint if darker color is desired.

When painting/staining your doll, remember the following: •

• • •

Make sure that the brush is dry. Using a wet brush with paint will make the yarn absorb the paint more easily and has a tendency to stain a wider area very quickly. With acrylic paint, you may want to be careful because it is permanent, so light application is advisable. Then just add paint gradually and layer by layer if darker color is desired. Test a very small amount of the amount of paint BEHIND the buttons first (or even on the back of the head) to find out how the paint looks against the yarn. This way, if you make a mistake, it won’t be evident. Acrylic paint dries fast so you may have to work a little more quickly! In case you make a mistake, wiping alcohol immediately can also help a little bit to fade the stain. You may also use actual makeup (eyeshadow) but this technique is not permanent. Makeup may fade over time. But you can reapply and it will be good practice. If you make a mistake, you can wipe the makeup off with a wet tissue or rag.
