And I actually find it funny because it has nothing to do with my major in college, which is economics. (Band 8.0+) Well currently I’m part-timing as an English teacher at a local tutoring school. And I have been doing so for about 5 years now. 2. What do you like about your job? (Band 7.0 – 7.5) I’m really glad that I picked this job because I feel like I can really help people. Even though there’s a lot of work to do. I just feel very happy to see my students grow every day.

3. What do you do after work?
to feel up to something: cảm thấy muốn làm gì
(Band 7.0 – 7.5) So after work, I usually go home and have dinner with my family. And after that I might just go and grab a drink with my friends, or just stay at home and catch up on my favorite shows on Netflix.
it’s a blast (idiom) câu cảm thán, diễn tả sự vui mừng
(Band 8.0+) So after I get off, I usually hit the bar with a couple of my friends, or even my students. We would like to grab a couple of drinks or maybe a bite to eat if we’re feeling up to it. And it’s always a blast whenever I hang out with them. It’s a great way to unwind and chill.

2. CITY LIFE 1. What kind of city do you like? I’m not a picky person so I don’t really have any specific preferences. But if I have to choose one, I guess my top pick would be places that are a bit vibrant or a little bit lively. I love the feeling of hustling through crowds of people, the energy of a metropolitan city. That would be so crazy and fun. 2. Do you like the city you are living in now? Well, yes and no. The fact that this city is choking on the fumes of a ton of motorcycles is really making me worried. You can really feel the effect of smog when you are driving through the traffic. With that being said, there are still many good aspectrs of this place that I adore. Such as the people, the tradition, the culture, especially the cuisine. Everything is so diverse and enthralling. 3. Do you prefer the city or the countryside? I gotta say that each has its perks. But personally, I kind of lean towards residing in an urban area. Despite all the hustle and bustle that so many people dislike, I believe that living in a metropolis gives you ready access to entertainment, education and services. The living standard will, apparently be generally better, and the same can be said about job prospects. 4. Which city have you been to recently? Actually, I just paid a visit to Singapore last month, and I gotta say my mind is blown away. Although it’s not a massive city, Singapore is light-years ahead of Hanoi in terms of infrastructures. It’s also very culturally rich. There’s a lot to do, a lot to see and a lot to eat.

You know I can often meet new people and make friends when I do sports. And as I think that, you know, practicing a sport regularly does wonder for my health. It keeps me in shape, it helps to relieve my back and neck pains. And last but not least, it refreshes my mind after a long day of hard work. 2. What sport are popular in your country? Well I guess in Vietnam right now, it’s football. I think football is considered the king of sports. It’s very easy to play. All you need is just a ball, a few friends and two goals, which you can always make or create by marking the ground with, you know, a piece of clothing or bags, for example. And I think it’s a competitive sport, it can be very enjoyable to watch and play. 3. Do you think it is important to play a sport? Of course. I think it’s essential for everybody to take up a sport, because, you know, as I mentioned before. Playing sports brings great benefits to your health. So I think you’d better take good care of it. 4. What sport would you like to try in the future? Well, there are many sports that I would like to have a crack at, but if I have to choose one, that would be climbing. 5. HOME/ACCOMMODATION 1. Where are you living now? Well, actually, at the moment, I’m living with my younger sister in a pretty small apartment. We couldn’t afford a more spacious living for both of us, because.. you know, it’s really expensive here. However, luckily, we could manage to equip our room with a fairly adequate number of necessities. 2. How long have you been living there? Up to now, I would say, it has been around 4 years. However, there was an interval in between because I moved to the UK and had a course there for a while.

I think most of the historical knowledge just go over my head, and I think I’m more of like an art person. (#2) Well I think history is an area of my interest. I love to learn about historical figures and historical events. So learning history can give me a better understanding of this. 2. What historical event do you find interesting? Well I think this question is really putting me on the spot because my recollections about historical events are pretty hazy. Having said that I think the first event that spring to mind is probably Independence Day, which is the biggest milestone in Vietnamese history. Because it marks the day when Vietnam has become a sovereign state. I mean Vietnam is totally free from French colonization. 3. Do you prefer the city or the countryside? Definitely. History is the backbone of any society. Because it helps instil in every citizen a sense of patriotism. And we can acquire a deeper understanding formidable feats of our forefathers. 7. COUNTRYSIDE 1.Have you ever live in the countryside? As a matter of fact, I have. I used to stay with my grandparents every summer in the countryside. I gotta say I was quite fond of the bucolic sceneries and lifestyle there, which is very laid back, pared down and serene.
8
bucolic (adj) thuộc vùng nông thôn ( = rural) laid back (adj) thoải mái to pare down: tối giản, làm ơn giản serene (adj) thanh bình
2. What you usually do in the countryside? People usually think there’s not much to do in the countryside, but that’s not the case at all. If anything, there’s a lot more to do there than in the city. Some of the things I quite enjoy doing whenever I find myself in the countryside are feeding the animals, going long walk and stargazing. But honestly, I think the best thing to do in the countryside is to do nothing at all; just unplug, relax and enjoy the leisurely pace of life. 3. Will you live in the countryside in the future? Now that’s a swell idea. But I would say no. For now, I am a sucker for the convenience of big cities, like eating out, easy transport and nightlife, so I can’t really see myself living without them permanently. But maybe someday I’ll change my mind.

8. PLANTS
botany (n) thực vật học
1. Do you like having plants in your house? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I’m quite fanatical about botany, and about how plants can actually enhance the quality of our surroundings in many aspects, one of which is to reduce the pollution levels, you know, air pollution level, which is alarmingly increasing in Hanoi. 2. What was your favorite plant when you were a kid? Actually, I was brought up in a neighborhood where there was a plethora of flora and fauna. But I was most fascinated by bamboo, a kind of evergreen flowering plants, which can provide a cool patch of shade. So my cronies and I used to play hide and seek in the bamboos to stay away from the scorching heat in the summer. 3. Do you think plants is a good gift for you or not? Well, let me see. I think giving plants as a birthday present is ubiquitous in Vietnam. You know, one of the extraordinary benefits of plantis is that they can actually reduce the level of indoor toxicity by destroying a part of pollutants, like smoke or dust. Also, taking care of plants can boost our mood when we are too stressed out after long working or studying hour.

9. FASHION 1) What type of clothes do you enjoy wearing? Well, actually, this is kind of a challenging question for me, because I do not attach myself to any particular style. I would say I’m quite an unpredictable individual. So, my approach to fashion is pretty much mix and match. I would always like to try new combinations and have fun with it and see how it goes. But at the moment I would say I’m very obsessed with trench coats. I think they are very versatile with different patterns and silhouettes. They can bring completely different looks to you in ways that you’ve never thought about before. 2) Do you enjoy buying clothes? Everyone around me knows I’m a slave for fashion. So, it should come as no surprise that I take a very serious interest in purchasing clothes. It’s such a huge part of my retail therapy and it gives me inexplicable joy. You know, the feeling of being able to venture into boutiques, to find pieces of clothing that really suit you and reflect your personality is something that gives me absolute thrills. So splurging in clothes is one of my guilty pleasures, I must say. 3) Has your style of clothing changed compared to 10 years ago? Definitely, I do think there has been a drastic evolution in my styles of clothing. A decade ago, I was practically a secondary student, and I don’t think my sense of identity in fashion had ever begun to develop at that time. Most of my shirts or pants were actually what my mom bought for me, which I was okay with. And obviously, by now, I have matured and my style has become much more refined with a lot of attention to details, silhouettes and more finesses in general. And I’m very proud of that change.

9. FASHION 4) What types of clothes do people in your local area enjoy wearing? That depends on people’s age. For the elderly or the middle- aged demographics in Hanoi, I would say their clothing is quite casual and very suitable for the weather. Hanoi’s weather is very erratic so it’s completely understandable why people would choose to prioritize function. On the other hand, the youngster, it’s more about aesthetic than practicality. These days, the youth have an urge to express themselves, and appearance would is such a great way for them to do so. These days, for people of my age, you can see their clothes tend to have very bold designs, lots of colors, different silhouettes. Overall, it’s just more diverse. So I do think that’s the main difference.

10. PUBLIC HOLIDAY 1) What’s your plan for New Year’s Eve? Like most social people who love party and dancing, I think they might go to a New Year’s Eve countdown party and kiss someone at midnight to close the year. As a family-oriented person, I would embrace this once a year experience to gather with my family in front of the altar to take stock of our lives, which involves thinking about all the ups and downs in the past year and enjoy the change of seasons in laughter and happiness. 2) What are you going to do on Tet holiday? Well, many people would prefer to go to a far-off destination to relax or unwind after a year of hard work. For me, Tet holiday is more special than that. Instead of travelling to some places of interest, which will cost an arm and a leg during Tet, I would opt to spend quality time with my beloved ones. That is to say, I would spend most of my time visiting all my relatives and friends whom I haven’t gotten a chance to meet up with. I would also give lucky money to all of my family members as a gift to wish them lots of good luck in the upcoming year.

11. HANDWRITING 1. Do you write by hand?
13
to jot down: viết xuống giấy to marginalize: cho ra rìa
Not really anymore. These days I find myself typing a lot on computers and texting on my phone, so I rarely use paper and a pen anymore. Having said that, I still have to jot down notes in class whenever laptops are not allowed. And I think that’s a pain. 2. Do you think writing will be replaced in the future? You know, in this day and age, modern technology have largely marginalized handwriting. And you don’t see people writing much as they did in the past. However, I still think handwriting could be of some help on certain occasion. For example, you should always handwrite a wedding invitation to show some respect to your guests. 3. Is it still necessary to teach children how to write by hand? Definitely. I think it’s very crucial to teach young children to handwrite properly. Because handwriting exercises really do wonders for their cognitive development. For example, my young brother who has a beautiful handwriting is a really brilliant kid. 4. What sort of impression can a handwriting have on other people? Well in Vietnam there’s a myth that handwriting can speak volumes about someone’s personality. For example, neat writing often comes from a good – hearted person. On the other hand, if your handwriting is unintelligible, they may think badly of you. And I think that’s an antiquated way of thinking.

12. HOUSEWORK 1. Do you often do housework at home? (Answer 1) Well, of course, I do housework on a regular basis. This is primary because doing household chores is the norm in most Vietnamese household. And parents are always occupied with work so we should give them a hand. (Answer 2) Well given the fact that my house hires a housekeeper who takes care of all the chores in my family, so I don’t even have to lift a finger. 2. What kind of housework do you often do? Well, I have to do all source of things. For the most part, I’m in charge of doing the dishes. I think this is a real hassle because I’m quite allergic to washing detergent. And also I have to cook but I don’t mind that a lot because cooking is my forte. I have acquired a deeper understanding of culinary arts since I start watching the show Master Chef. 3. Did you do housework when you were a child? (Answer 1) Well, absolutely but for the most part, I was exempted from doing housework that is too physically demanding. I just have to do some menial tasks, like sweeping the floor, washing the dishes and sometime I have to run some errands for my parents like buying the groceries, purchasing some daily necessities.

13. WEATHER
Cấu trúc câu với Weather:
1. What’s the weather like in your country? Well, as you could probably tell, I’m currently residing in Vietnam, which is a tropical country. When it comes to the weather here, for the most part, it’s kinda scorching hot and humid year-round. I mean, there have been reports about the heatwaves of over 40 degree celsius in Hanoi in recent year during summer. In winter, it used to be frigid but now it’s a bit more pleasant and bearable. And I guess it’s due to the global warming. 2. Does the weather affect what you do? Absolutely. I mean, when the weather is unfavorable like when it’s too sunny, I tend to procrastinate my plan until late afternoon. 5 or 6 pm, because that’s when the temperature lowers a little bit. On the other hand, when it rains heavily for too long, I’m kinda reluctant to drive so I think I would just get a Grab to get around. 3. What is your favorite season? Well I gotta say it’s definitely autumn. I mean Hanoi possesses 4 distinct seasons in a year. In summery months, it’s usually sweltering and stuffy and I’m sure you cannot make through the summer without an air conditioner. Winter is too cold and it rains a lot in spring. So hands-down, autumn is my go-to season.
When it comes to the weather…. I find the weather… …is my go-to season Từ vựng chủ ề Weather: tropical (adj) thuộc vùng nhiệt ới scorching hot (adj) nóng như lửa ốt humid (adj) ẩm ướt frigid (adj) lạnh cóng pleasant (adj) (nói về thời tiết) dễ chịu bearable (adj) có thể chịu ược global warming (n) sự nóng lên toàn cầu unfavorable (adj) không dễ chịu sweltering (adj) nóng bức stuffy (adj) ngột ngạt

14. ROBOT
robotics engineering (n): công nghệ robot
1. Are you interested in robots? Yes, robotics engineering is something I take a keen interest in. I actually subscribe to a journal dedicated entirely to robots called “The Robot Workshop”. The other day I read a really interesting article about how robots can be used to perform surgeries. 2. Do you like robots to work at your home? I think that’s a brilliant idea. I’m quite lazy, so household chores like cleaning or cooking are a real hassle. I would prefer to have those done by a robot. Actually, we have a robotic vacuum cleaner at our house. It’s truly a life-saver.
3. Do you want to take a car which robot is the driver?
self-driving cars (n): xe tự lái
Well you know nowadays self-driving cars are certainly not a strange topic anymore. A.I. has gotten more sophisticated, and it’s more than capable of navigating addresses and controlling a vehicle. However, I gotta say I don’t really feel comfortable letting robots take the wheel. I think they are not 100 percent reliable, and may not handle dangerous situations like a slippery road as well as a human driver does. So for now I still prefer to drive manually.
navigate (v): ịnh vị
4. Will robots replace human beings in the workplace completely? Well, these days human labor is being marginalized by automation in the workplace, especially in manufacturing. Labor-intensive tasks can be done by machines with ease and precision. However, there are always things that require the delicate touch of a human hand. For example, a hand-made shirt always has more soul than a machine-made one.
take the wheel (v): cầm lái Nếu bạn không muốn sử dụng cụm “drive a car”, hãy dùng cụm này nhé! drive manually (v): tự lái Cụm này sẽ rất hữu ích ể thay cho cụm “drive by myself“ marginalize (v): làm cho kém quan trọng hơn

15. TEA or COFFEE 1. Which do you prefer: Tea or Coffee? I’m definitely more of a coffee drinker. Every morning, I need to get my coffee fix or else I’ll zone out a lot at work. I do drink tea occasionally though, usually when I eat out. Unsweetened iced tea is the standard accompaniment to pretty much every meal in Vietnam. 2) Do you enjoy buying clothes? Most of the time it’s tea. In Vietnam and a few Asian countries, it is de rigueur for the host to offer tea to the guests. Usually I just boil some water and pour it over a tea bag or two. For special guest though, I tend to get all fancy and bring out the porcelain tea set, the tray , actual tea leaves instead of tea bags – you know – the whole nine yards. 3) Has your style of clothing changed compared to 10 years ago? 100 percent. Vietnamese drip coffee is pretty easy to make at home, but freshly ground and freshly roasted beans? I mean, come on! Plus, there is something about sitting on tiny little stools and slowly enjoy your morning coffee that just completes, the coffee experience, wouldn’t you agree? And for espresso and espresso drinks, obviously you need to go to a coffee shop where they have an actual machine to make them. 4. Do your people in your country give tea or coffee as a gift?
17
(be) more of a (sb): là một người thế nào ó to get … fix: làm 1 liều to zone out: không tập trung an accompaniment to/for something: ồ ăn/uống kèm de rigueur (adj) thông lệ to get all fancy: làm màu porcelain tea set (n) bộ ấm trà bằng sứ the whole nine yards (phrase) tất cả mọi thứ luôn drip coffee (n) cà phê phin freshly ground: mới xay; freshly roasted: mới rang stool (n) ghế nhỏ without fail (phrase) thế nào cũng, luôn luôn
As a matter of fact, they do. It’s an easy, albeit lazy, choice what to get to someone. So around Lunar New Year, for example, you’ll see supermarket selling a lot of these gift baskets, and without fail there will be a box of tea or coffee or both in every single one of them.

16. FISH 1. Do you like eating fish? I am quite of a meat person. However, I still go for fish in my dinner every now and again as research has shown that it is incredibly rich in essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Furthermore, it’s been proven that eating fish could boost brain’s functions. 2. Do you think fishing is popular in VN? It kind of depends on where you live. In the countryside, Angling is such a solitary pastime for all sorts of people, especially those who have a penchant for being introverted or the ones enjoying spending time in the great outdoors. In urban areas, however, people tend to enjoy more vibrant recreational activities rather than fishing. 3. Where do you often see fish? Given the fact that I reside in the city where ponds and lakes are not ubiquitous compared to the rural areas, I can actually see fish at various aquariums in a lot of large shopping malls. It’s terrific that I can admire the aquatic world through 4 sides of transparent glass. In addition, I can spot beautiful gold fish in bowl- shaped aquaria aka fish bowls at my friend’s house. 4. Do you keep fish as a pet? Definitely yes. Having a pet does wonders for your health as scientifically speaking, it could help diminish blood pressure and the feeling of loneliness. Therefore, I would keep some fish as my favorite pets were I to have any chance. Unfortunately, due to my hectic schedule, it is something for all intents and purposes impossible.

18. RECYCLE
environmentally minded (adj) có ý thức bảo vệ môi trường
1. Do you recycle now? Embarrasingly enough, I do not recycle as much as I think I should. But everybody, myself included, is becoming environmentally – minded. Since the number of environment – related news covered on media is increasing, we consume more responsibly….
to consume responsibly: tiêu dùng có trách nhiệm
2. Did you recycle when you were a child?
be aware of: có ý thức về vấn ề gì
To Vietnamese people, I think 10 – 20 years ago, recycling was a foreign concept. Back then, even though the environment was in a precarious state, we were not aware of how bad the situation was. So we did/ not really care about recycling…. 3. Will you recycle in the future? I think sustainability is the buzzword. Obviously I will find new ways to recycle in the future. For example, classifying garbages, or not throwing things to quickly… 4. What kinds of things do you recycle?
a strange concept = a foreign concept: iều xa lạ
in a precarious state = in a dangerous state sustainability (n) sự bền vững buzzword (n) ám chỉ chủ ề ang ược nhắc ến nhiều dạo gần ây be good with one’s hands = be skilled at sth: khéo léo, có khả năng làm gì
When you think about recycling, we usually think of something a little difficult to do for an average person who is not really good with their hands. Recycling is actually really simple. You know, such as turning leftovers into organic fertilizer. Urban gardening is one of the way. You just basically dump things onto the plants…

19. HAIRCUT 1. How often do you have a haircut? I don’t have the habit of frequenting the beauty parlor as I like it in a very particular way, and I have recently discovered that not many hair salons in my city could satisfy my taste. 2. How long have you had your current haircut? If my memory serves me correctly, it has been almost 2 months since I’ve made a trip to a salon. Contrary to what most people believe, if a woman’s hair is styled correctly, it does not require much maintenance. The last time I visited my hair technician, she did a complete makeover, ensuring that I would not have to redo my hair too regularly apart from the occasional trim. 3. Have you ever had an unhappy haircut experience? Oh yes, absolutely. That nightmarish experience is still etched on my memory. Due to a miscommunication between me and the hairdresser, instead of styling it in accordance with one of the most trendy hairstyles at the time, which would definitely accentuate my features, she aimed for excessive layers, which resulted in a horrid cut that resembled a lion’s mane. Needless to say, it took me a month to grow that out. 4. Do you like to have your hair cut? Not really. The bizzare thing is, I do not enjoy having my hair cut, but I definitely relish having my hair touched. The sensation of someone playing with every strand of my hair, inadvertently massaging my scalp at the same time is very calming and invigorating. Perhaps I am quite addicted to this for sentimental reasons, as it reminds me of how my mother used to comb my hair when i was little.

Most recently, I have spotted a lost wallet which had hundreds of dollars inside as I was in my university restroom. I then brought it to the faculty office to have it returned. Just a few hours later, the wallet’s rightful owner called and thanked me profusely. He even popped into my class to give me a cup of coffee, as well as a 20 bucks reward. 5. If you lost your phone what could you do? If I were to lose my phone, I could google: “find my phone” which will provide me with its last-known location. In fact, two years ago I did just that and found my phone at a local pub where I met my friends the weekends prior.
