Foreword A caprice (or capriccio) is an instrumental composition in free form. Descriptive words such as "lively:' "fanciful:' and "joyful" are inexorably connected to the concept of a caprice. It is always a lot of fun to compose little instrumental solos that are based on a simple picture, a feeling, a dance, or a style. The 20 pieces in this collection all have titles representing concepts I thought about as I composed. I initially made a list of titles, and then I picked one at a time and wrote about them. Fanciful, Leilo, and Romance are based on feelings for instance. Russian Caprice, Capriccio Italien, and Capriccio Espanol contain melodic and rhythmic motifs drawn from my memory of famous orchestral works. No themes by other composers were used...literally, just a reminiscent bar or two. Several of the solos are whimsical, such as Cappuccino and Cartoon Caprice. I have endeavored to make the 20 Caprices challenging so that they may be used and enjoyed for many years. However, none of the pieces is written in the extreme, and the range has been kept reasonable. As a trumpet player, I think you will find that the Caprices lay well on the instrument. I have also taken care to write in rests, which should help with pacing and endurance. The key signatures are all three flats, three sharps, or fewer. With a little effort, I think you will find the 20 Caprices a lot of fun to practice and play. Thank you for purchasing them.

Allen Vizzutti While growing up in Montana, Allen Vizzutti was taught by his father, a self-taught musician and trumpet player, until he left home to attend the Eastman School of Music. There he earned a Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, a Performer's Certificate, a chair in the faculty brass quintet, and the only Artist's Diploma ever awarded a wind player in Eastman's 80-year history. While living in Los Angeles during the 80's, Vizzutti performed on 100 motion picture soundtracks and countless TV shows. Equally at home in a multitude of musical idioms, he has visited 30 countries and every state in the union to perform with a rainbow of artists and ensembles, from Chick Corea and Doc Severlnsen to the Kosel Wind Orchestra. He has performed as a classical and jazz soloist all over the world. Vizzutti has also made many solo recordings. From his home base in Seattle, Washington, Vizzutti's current career thrust is an impressive schedule of recitals, concerts, and composing. His continued commitment to education and the value of music in everyday life results each year in an extensive schedule of guest appearances at universities throughout Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada, and the United States in both jazz and classical idioms. As Artist in Residence, Vizzutti has taught at various schools and universities. Vizzutti's love of expression through composition has led to world premier performances by major American orchestras and other prominent ensembles.

Vorwort Eine Caprice (oder ein Capriccio) ist ein InstrumentalstUck in einer freien Form. Adjektive wie lebhaft, verspielt und frohllch sind untrennbar mit der Vorstellung einer Caprice verbunden. Es macht stets groBen SpaB, kleine Instrumentalsoli zu komponieren, die auf einfachen Blldern, GefUhlen, einem Tanz oder Stll basieren. Die Titel der zwanzig StUcke in dieser Sammlung spiegeln aile die Ideen wider, die loh beim Komponieren im Kopf hatte. Zunachst verfasste ich eine Liste mit Titeln, dann pickte Ich mir einen nach dem anderen heraus und schrieb dazu die Musik. Fanciful, Leito und Romance basieren beispielsweise auf GefUhlen. Russian Caprice, Capriccio Italien und Capriccio Espanol enthalten musikalische und rhythmische Motive, die mlr aus berUhmten Orchesterwerken in Erinnerung geblieben sind. Kein Thema eines anderen Komponisten wurde genau zitiert. Hier und da erinnern ein oder zwei Takte an ein bestimmtes Werk. Elnige Soli sind humorvoll, dazu gehOren Cappuccino und Cartoon Caprice. Ich habe versucht, die zwanzig Capricen so anspruchsvoll zu gestalten, dass sie Uber viele Jahre hinweg gespielt werden konnen, Keines der StUcke weist jedoch einen extrem hohen Schwierigkeitsgrad auf und auch der Tonumfang ist moderat. Ais Trompeter werden Sie feststellen, dass die StUcke gut auf das Instrument zugeschnitten sind. DarUber hinaus habe ich auch Pausen hineingeschrieben, um die Einhaltung des Tempos und die Ausdauer zu erleichtern. Die Tonarten enthalten aile nur maximal drei Vorzeichen. Mit ein wenig Anstrengung werden diese zwanzig Capricen sicherlich viel Freude beim Oben und Spielen bereiten. Vielen Dank fUr lhr Interesse an diesem Buch!

~~ Allen Viuutti In seiner Jugend in Montana wurde Allen Vizzutti von seinem Vater, einem autodidaktischen Musiker und Trompeter unterrichtet, bis er nach Rochester (New York) an die Eastman-Musikschule ging. Dort erwarb er ein Diplom und einen Magistertitel im Fach Musik, ein Diplom als Musiker, einen Platz im Brass-Quintett der Fakultat und das einzige KUnstler-Diplom, das ein Blasmusiker in der 80jahrigen Geschichte der Eastman-Schule je erworben hatte. Ais er wahrend der 80er-Jahre in Los Angeles lebte, wirkte Vizzutti an 100 Fllmmusikproduktionen mit und trat in unzahllqen Fernsehshows auf. Allen Vizzutti ist in einer Vielfalt von musikalischen Traditionen zu Hause. Er bereiste 30 Lander und aile Staaten der USA, um dort mit elner breit getacherten Auswahl an KUnstlern und Artisten aufzutreten - von Chick Corea und Doc Severinsen bls hin zum Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. Auf der ganzen Welt hatte er Auftritte als klassischer Sollst und als Jazzmusiker. DarUber hinaus spielte er auch viele Soloaufnahmen auf Tontraqer ein. C'est toujours un plaisir d'eorlre de courts solos instrumentaux qui reposent sur une image simple, un sentiment, une danse ou un style. Les vingt pieces de ce recueil portent des titres retletant des idees qui m'ont traverse I'esprit au fil de la preparation du recueil. Dans un premier temps, j'ai etabll une liste de tltres, puis j'en ai choisi un a la fois pour en donner une definition musicale. Fanciful, Leito et Romance expriment un sentiment particulier. Russian Caprice, Capriccio Italien et Capriccio Espanol contiennent des motifs melodlques et rythmiques extraits de celebres reuvres pour orchestre que j'avais en rnernolre. Aucun autre theme de grands compositeurs n'est ernprunte lltteralsment, mais plutot sous la forme d'une impression de deja-entendu, Plusieurs solos sont un peu capricieux comme Cappuccino et Cartoon Caprice, par exemple. Ces vingt caprices sont dellberernent exigeants afin qu'ils puissent etre travallles et apprecles pendant plusieurs annees. Toutefois, les pieces ne sont pas d'une extreme dlfflculte et Ie registre reste tout a fait raisonnable. Le trompettiste que vous etes remarquera sans aucun doute que ces caprices conviennent parfaitement a votre instrument. J'ai en outre veille a lnserer des silences pour vous permettre de mieux gerer Ie tempo et la resistance. t'arrnure n'excede pas trois dleses ou trois bernols, Par consequent, en faisant un petit effort, vous allez pouvoir apprecler l'etude et l'interpretatlon des pieces. Allen Vizzutti Durant son enfance dans Ie Montana, Allen Vizzuti etudle la musique avec son pere, musicien et trompettiste autodidacte, avant d'etre admis a l'Ecole de Musique Eastman ou iI obtient une maitrise en musicologie, un dlplorne de concertiste et est nomme au poste de trompettiste du quintette de cuivres universitaire. Allen Vizzutti est Ie seul musicien jouant d'un instrument a vent que l'Ecole de Musique Eastman a recompense du prestigieux Dlplorne d'Artiste Concertiste. Voorwoord Een caprice (of capriccio) is een instrumentale compositie in een vrije vorm. Beschrijvingen als levendig, fantasierijk en opgewekt zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden met het begrip caprice. Het is altijd erg leuk om kleine instrumentale solo's te componeren die zijn gebaseerd op een eenvoudig beeld, een gevoel, een dans of een stijl. De twintig stukken in deze verzameling hebben allemaal titels die de gedachten weerspiegelen die ik had tijdens het componeren. Ik maakte in eerste instantie een Iijst van titels en vervolgens koos ik er steeds een ult waarover ik vervolgens schreef. Fanciful, Leito en Romance zijn bijvoorbeeld gebaseerd op gevoelens. Russian Caprice, Capriccio Itallen en Capriccio Espanol bevatten melodische en ritmische motieven uit mijn herinnering aan bekende orkestwerken. Er zijn geen thema's van andere componisten overgenomen, hooguit een of twee maten hier en daar die ergens aan doen denken. Een aantal van de solo's zijn grillig, zoals Cappuccino en Cartoon Caprice. _ Ik heb geprobeerd om de twintig caprices zo veel muzikale uitdaging mee te geven dat ze vele jaren met plezier gebruikt. kunnen worden. Toch is geen van de stukken extreem geschreven en is de omvang steeds redelijk gehouden. Zelf ben ik trompettist en ik denk dat je zult merken dat de caprices goed zijn toegesneden op het instrument. Ik heb er ook voor gezorgd dat er voldoende rusten in de muziek voorkomen - die zullen helpen bij het vasthouden van het tempo en bij het afmaken van de frasen. De toonsoorten bevatlen geen van aile meer dan drie mollen of drie kruisen. Met enige inspanning zal het een genoegen zijn om de twintig caprices te oefenen en te spelen. Allen Viuutti Allen Vizzutli groeide op in Montana in de Verenigde Staten. Hij werd muzikaal opgeleid door zijn vader, een autodidactisch muzikant en trompettist, totdat hij naar de Eastman School of Music ging. 20 Caprices for Trumpet These 20 Caprices are fun to play, but challenging, so that they may be enjoyed for many years. However, none of the pieces is written in the extreme, and the range has been kept reasonable. I think you will find that the Caprices lay well on the instrument. I have also taken care to write in rests, which should help with pacing and endurance. The key signatures are all three flats, three sharps, or fewer. With a little effort, I ,think you will find the 20 Caprices a lot of fun to practice and play.

Diese zwanzig Capricen sind schon zu spielen, aber auch so anspruchsvoll, dass Sie viele Jahre Freude daran haben werden. Keines der Stucke weist jedoch einen extrem hohen Schwierigkeitsgrad auf und auch der Tonumfang ist moderat. Sie werden feststellen, dass die Capricen gut auf das Instrument zugeschnitten sind. DarUber hinaus habe ich auch Pausen hineingeschrieben, um die Einhaltung des Tempos und die Ausdauer zu erleichtern. Die Tonarten enthalten aile nur maximal drei Vorzeichen. Mit ein wenig Anstrengung werden diese zwanzig Capricen sicherlich viel Freude beim Oben und Spielen bereiten.

Deze twintig caprices zijn leuk om te spelen, maar vormen ook een uitdaging, zodat je er jaren plezier van kunt hebben. Toch is geen van de stukken extreem geschreven en is de omvang steeds redelijk gehouden. Ik denk dat je zult merken dat de caprices goed zijn toegesneden op het instrument. Ik heb er ook voor gezorgd dat er voldoende rusten in de muziek voorkomen - die helpen bij het vasthouden van het tempo en het afmaken van de frasen. De toonsoorten bevatten 'geen van aile meer dan drie mollen of drie kruisen. Met enige inspanning zal het een genoegen zijn om de twintig caprices te oefenen en te spelen.
