CLOZE TEXT: Passage 1: It's Day 6 of my Kilimanjaro expedition, which is fast drawing to a (1)……………. What I reflect on most is not my own achievement in summiting, though. Indeed, the more I think about it, the (2)…………….. impressed I become with this so-called feat. Yes, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a physical and mental challenge, but is it all (3)…………… exceptional? Let me explain what I'm arriving at. For the last six days, I have carried a daypack on steep-ish terrain for maybe eight solid hours each outing. Technically (4)………………, however, the route is no more testing than your average Scottish munro, (5)………………… for the altitude factor. Moreover, I 'have been pandered to the whole time. Without (6) ……………………, I have been woken every morning by my guides; cooks have prepared surprisingly delicious meals for rne each day; porters have carried the main weight of my kit up and down the mountain on my (7)…………….. and those same individuals have pitched my tent and taken it down again at each camp my expedition team has visited. So that (8)………………….. me to draw the following conclusion: while I am pleased I was able to summit Kili, the more impressive feat was carried out quietly by the team of guides and porters around me, (9)……………. whom I would never have succeeded. The porters in particular are worthy of commendation for they carry not only 20-plus-kilogram packs up the mountain every day, working tire-lessly from dawn to dusk, but they also stay in good spirits the entire time. It is (10)……………….. me how they do so and I am truly in awe of them.
Passage 2: Kande Beach is located on the western shore of Lake Malawi, one of Africa's Great Lakes. It is an idyllic location with guaranteed sunshine for much of the year (1)…………. than the rainy season, so it is (2)…………….. surprising that the resort there is (3)…………….. in demand with tourists. Many qo to enjoy the (4)…………………. of activities on offer such as scuba diving and horse riding. Yet more simply want to lounge about relaxing on the shore, taking the odd dip to cool down now and then. Yet few tourists seem to appreciate the fact that on the (5)…………… doorstep of their little paradise - at the edge of their bubble, if you will – (6)……………… the evidence in microcosm of a desperately impoverished country. Kapeti Village, for example,is (7)………………… a stone's throw from the resort. Here, according to local leaders, the prevalence of one particular very serious incurable illness is alarmingly at more than 33%. In other words, fewer than two in three people are free of the disease. However, that incurable disease is (8)……………. from the only problem, with malaria, cholera and other serious illnesses also wreaking havoc. But is the general apathy amongst tourists a sign that they care (9)……………….? Well, it would seem not. Whilst it may be a (10)……………… order to burst their bubble and remove the illusion of paradise found, efforts to do so are not entirely in (11)………………... According to locals running village tours, it isn’t until they see the extent of deprivation for themselves that tourists begin to appreciate the problem. Then and only then (12)…………. they begin to open their eyes; but at least it's a start. WORD FORMS: EXPLODE LIVE STABLE INTERVENE

For much of the 20th century wolves were (1)…………….. endangered in the United states, hunted to near or actual extinction across wide areas of the country. Their reintroduction from Canada was broadly supported and welcomed by nature lovers and (2)………………. alike, but no one could have predicted quite how profound an effect it would have on Yellowstone National Park in particular. The absence of these predators from the park for so many years had facilitated an (3)…………….. in deer numbers, which, in turn, had impacted the landscape siqnificantly. Overgrazing had led to fewer trees, faster rivers and so on. Fish, birds and other (4)……………… had migrated away from the area to better habitats and feedinq grounds (5)………………….. Amazingly, though, the wolves' return to Yellowstone almost immediately redressed the balance and it soon began to return to its natural state. Within a matter of years, the wolves had got the population of deer under control in a way that human (6)………….. had consistently failed to do. Consequently, trees started to (7)……………….. the landscape again, (8)…………………. the soil. This attracted back the birds and small mammals, not to mention beavers. Dam-building by the latter, and better soil, slowed down the re-oxvqenated rivers, too, which in turn, brought back the fish, and the improved (9)…………….. encouraged other predators, such as bears, to return in qreater numbers. The park was (10)………………. at last. MISTAKE CORRECTION: (6 mistakes) The city didn't let me down, however: it was all my friends had intimated and more, I was thrilled to discover. I spent the next few days hurriedly exploring the sights and partook in as many activities as time would permit, and the nights were spent livinq it up and lettinq my hair down in the famed party haunts of the city centre. And why not ? After all, I was young and free, so to speak, and a newly single, a factor which had played a leadinq role in my determininq to embark on this adventure in the first instance. If I reqretted anythinq, it was simply not havinq afforded myself lonqer in this deliqhtful place. Volcanoes, I soon understood, were not the only thinq likely to explode in these parts, for the locals, once it set loose from the shackles of work for the week, are equally explosive as they pour out onto the streets readily to party throuqh the niqht. However, I wasn't massively perturbed by the rush, knowinq I would be qrateful for the added time soon when my adventure really beqan. The engineer was concerned about the nuts and bolts of building on marshy ground. We couldn’t watch the film as the television was on the blink. This suitcase weighs a ton; what have you got in here? The number of computers on line is in the millions. The amount that international footballers get paid is quite mind-boggling. Tom was totally confused by algebra until his teachers helped him to see the light. My holiday plans had to be put on the back burner when several serious peoblems cropped up at work. Halfway through the construction of the buidling the architect realised that the design didn’t work, so he had to go back to the drawing board. Si’d car is a carbon copy of the 1950s model. A mobile phone can come in handy if you need to make an emergency phone call.
